Re: [RBW] RBW Silver crank set 42/28

2022-07-18 Thread Richard Rose
You may not get many impartial views here? That’s the crankset that came on my
Clem and it is one of my favorite things about the bike. Looks may be
subjective but I think it looks great. The gearing has been ideal for me,
rarely using the 28 & never spinning out (those days are likely gone). The
finish is really nice & I’ve come to like the guard. In short it fits the bike
& looks good doing so.

Ditto what Mr. Rose said. I installed one on an old '72 Fuji Finest

admit that it took me a while to adjust to the look of that chain guard,
but I've gotten used to it.

Re: [RBW] Silver2 shifter apparently shift 12 speeds fine, even with SRAM rd

2022-07-18 Thread Patch T
Just adding more similar data here...

My Silver1 shifter set up on the Riv bar-end pod shifts a Sram Rival
through 11 speeds (11 to 42) with a 33t chainring. It does so very nicely.

Before mounting this shifter (last week), I tried out a Suntour barcon,
which could not get up to the last, largest cog.

I'm only up to 10, and that with an 8-sp-era road rd and Barcons, but
 this is heartening news.

I'm tempted to try my Barcons with a 12-sp road cassette, tho' I'd have
to swap out the DA 7401 rd for an 8-sp XT rd, I guess to handle a
big-enough granny cog to make it all worthwhile. Actually, I should
 proceed
gently, and simply go to 11 first.

Also, using the term "lottery" for the sale of the Rosco-Platy is inaccurate.
Riv has in the past done a lottery drawing for highly-anticipated frames (I

more demand than they could supply. They tried what they thought would be the
fairest, most egalitarian method of selling that frame, which was a lottery
method. You put your name in the hat, and if your name was drawn you had a week
(I think) to pay for your frame. If you didn't, they contacted the next
name drawn. Seems like a pretty fair way to ensure everyone had an equal

And kudos to Joe for coining a new word- gonna have to try and work that in to

Re: [RBW] Re: Long reach brake options for AHH

2022-07-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I'm glad you mentioned these, as I'd not heard of them. They look nice, and
if they stop as you say, then they are very good deals at half the price --
or less -- of Paul's.

The website does not say; how long a reach do they have? And: Will the
wider ones fit 42s and fenders? If so, I almost wish I'd had my 2020
Matthews built for these instead of cantilevers (also Paul's).

I must get a pair of those lovely non-aero levers; besides, it would be an
opportunity to finally by a HP 20 pump chuck.

Curious: Besides calling Jitensha, can you order the DC levers online
anywhere? A quick Google (v,t) did not help.

Also, unrelated except by the Jitensha site: Has anyone used these 650
latex tubes? 58 grams??? Those are lighter than the Schwalbe XL 559 X 42s I
use on the Matthews, which are a burdensome 90 grams and cost a plebian $15
each.

650 X 36-42B, latex super lightweight, made by Soyo, 34mm valve stem, 58g
 $35.00 ea

How neat would it be to have tubes that weigh the less than my extralight
571/559 X 23 mm (60 gr advertised, 70 grams actual) and cost more than some
tires I've used?

And I see that they still offer their wool-mix knickers and socks;
wonderful. Since Rick Risemberg's store is long gone, it's good to know
that really nice cycling knickers and socks are still available -- the Riv,
Swrv, etc knickers I've used simply don't fit as well as the old fashioned
type like these that are cut like regular street pants in waist and hips.

I'm kind of with Doug on this: as much fun as it would be to build up a new
Riv frame, I'm not sure what the point is because I have a Clem L I'm in

designed as skookum as the Clem, which does not noodle in the least under
the load I impose. Thoughts?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-18 Thread Allan McLane
I called and asked about that forward-facing seat clamp because I have a
NOS set of Dia Compe NGC 982 cantis that I have been saving aside for a
mermaid Platypus build for my wife. We both got tired of waiting for the
next Platy shipment and, per a conversation with Grant, the Rosco Platy has
nearly identical geometry so we getting a green 50 cm frame instead.

Anyway, Will told me that the seat clamp lug was designed for the tandem
frames and that they had been worried about too much heat weakening the
seat tube in that area during fabrication. Turns out that the seat stays
ended up being welded lower down and further away from the lug so they
decided to use up those clamp lugs somewhere else.

My plan is to put a collar around the seatpost (29.8mm) and anchor a Nitto
long cable hanger from there. It’ll be a minor inconvenience to adjust the
collar whenever the seat height needs changing but it’s not a frequent or
big deal to me.

The collar:

Looking forward to getting this frame!

[RBW] WTB: Large MUSA Shorts and/or Sackville Toursacks

2022-07-18 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I hesitated too long and missed out on the new MUSA black shorts. Does
anyone want to sell theirs - or any MUSA shorts in size large? I got a
pair of the new ranger green ones so ok on those.

Also, another thing I missed out on a while back the Sackville toursacks -
does anyone have a set they'd part with? Open to all stages of beausage.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day (last week) A New to me Quickbeam

2022-07-18 Thread Patrick Moore
That's an interesting project. The Puritan in me insists on "One Ring One
Cog One God" (and no g-d freewheel) as an old t-shirt from the fixie fad
era proclaimed, but I also have worked up devious ways to have my
single-fixed gear cake and multiple gear options to eat too.

As to the contest, best ss touring/commuter/all rounder/beater ride for the
dollar, I have to recall one that got away, that early '90s rigid top-end
Diamond Back Axis Team (beautifully tapered, skinny straight leg fork; no
one can tell me that straight forks can't be beautiful) that I converted
with ENO hub to a 64" fixed gear all rounder with 60 mm Big Apples.
Perfectly neutral handling, high bb allowing you to pedal the 170 mm cranks
around corners, tires that rolled acceptably on pavement, floated over
sand, and shrugged off goatheads even though this was 10 years before good
sealants. All this was achieved largely for the cost of the ENO hub, as my
brother gave me a family deal on the frameset and I had the other bits
lying around; but it has been too long for me to recall a total.

I think this project beat out even that other low-cost fixed/ss project
using an early-gen Raleigh Technium sports tourer.

2022-07-18 Thread Minh
hey bill looks great, and the pre-scratch & dent frames can be a little
liberating, but even with the parts bin build, a quickbeam is always gonna
look great!

 Hi all,

I have an orange Sam Hillborne frame/fork/headset for sale. This is a
 57cm from 2009 requiring a 27.2 seat post.

Overall the bike is in great shape. No rust, dents, dings or anything
of the sort. Usual wear associated with a bike that gets ridden, but
nothing specific to speak of. Pretty nice clearances for larger tires on
this model. 90% of the time I’ve owned the bike I ran Compass Snoqualmie
Pass tires under SKS P50 fenders.

I have a 91.5 PBH and the saddle height in the photos is 79.5. The bike
is still built up, so I provided a few pics of various set-ups over the
years. If you’d like to see a closeup of something specific, just reach
 out
off list and I’ll provide as many photos as you need.

I’d like to avoid shipping if possible, and would like to try for a
local(ish) sale in Sacramento, CA. But, if we have to ship, we can work
 that out.

Asking $1100 + shipping via Paypal (buyer covers any PP fees please)

 Thanks!

I was seriously considering getting a purple one but then I noticed the
reverso seat clamp. No cantilever cable hanger = no deal. V-brakes are

Joe, You do know me, because that is exactly what I did. And then I decided
I’d rather push harder than spin faster and went back to my original gear.
I think you may have missed it but I posted a pic a little earlier in the

obvious.

2022-07-18 Thread RichS
Max, that is an outstanding packing job. Would certainly meet Rivendell's
approval. Based on my experiences with prepping frames for shipment I'd say
you have a few hours invested in this masterpiece.

Who is doing the paintwork?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-18 Thread Garth

A funky monkey could only be used if you changed to a 27.2 seatpost with
the proper seat tube shim. The Roco has a 29.8 post.

If the seat lug teardrop thingy didn't go so far down you could attach a
31.8mm front drop cable stop with either a curved or flexible noodle to
adjust for the angle, but it's there so that won't work either.

The Tektro fork mounted hangers look fine and all on a computer screen.
When the rubber meets the road however, it appears the rear brake bridge is
like the Susie, with the threaded hold facing down. Besides, even if you
could attach it, those hangers on the rear place the cable stop notably
offset (rearward) from where a frame mounted cable stop would be. I tried
it on the Susie.

All of that though .well why should one have to go through all those
hoops when the entire problem is one of omitting the cable stop bridge ?
((Yes I know, I'm just howling to the moon and the Moon ain't replying,
teeheehee)) They cost about $1.95 from a frame supplier, retail. For a
builder, ummm pennies. Labor involved, c'mon . do we really want
to go there ? So it surely can't be about penny pinching, especially on a
$1350 frame. So why not include it ?(((again ... how-ooo-ling))) I could
make all sorts of not so nice assumptions but they'd be no more than that.
There is really no excuse for not having one. Canti brakes are not going
away. There's plenty to choose from still, so no that's no excuse.

I'm okay with not getting one though as it wasn't exactly what I'd like in
frame anyways. I have a Susie and as of now I have no desire to even build
it, let alone ride. Through all this I realize I happen to really like
"regular" diamond shaped bikes that take stock length chains and can be
used with either drop bars or say a Albatross/stache bar, not one of those
monster swept back bars. While I'll never rid myself of the Bombadil I
don't think I'll ever buy another Riv. That's not knock, just my preference
from what feels natural to me, that's like my custom Franklin
road/sport/touring kinda frame.

Re: [RBW] New Bike Day (last week) A New to me Quickbeam

2022-07-18 Thread Andrew Turner
I had a chromed Soma Rush with a similar gear setup (two chainrings up
front and two cogs on a road wheelset). That was a wickedly fun bike to
mess around on and my first steps into non-conventional builds. Shoulda
kept it but at least it paid for our first couch.
