[RBW] Re: Artsy Pics of Your Riv's

2022-09-08 Thread Will M
Fun thread!

I shot this image of my Rambouillet head badge through my grandfather's
circa-1950 Leica "Elmar" 90mm portrait lens at maximum aperture (f/4) using
Fuji Velvia 100 color reversal film while the sun set over the Hudson
River. And then (poof!) suddenly this Riv Owners Bunch was lighting up
that a Rivendell is featured in the Flickr Explore on April 29, 2013
. My 15 minutes in the limelight.

2022-09-08 Thread Jay Lonner
It’s interesting to consider the age/phase of life angle. I’m 54, and I recall
seeing a graph some years ago about self-reported quality of life, which hits a
nadir in the early to mid 50’s before creeping back up. There’s probably
something to the “sandwich generation” phenomenon, which is to say feeling
squeezed by the needs of kids transitioning to adulthood on the one hand, and
aging parents on the other.

It’s also true that I just don’t have the physical resilience that I used to —
my job requires long hours, with occasional overnight work. It takes me a while
to bounce back from a bad weekend of being on call. It makes it harder to
muster the activation energy to get on my bike and go for a ride, but I almost
always feel better when I do.

So no magic elixir to rebottle the enthusiasm and vigor I used to have, maybe
just a resigned yet optimistic acceptance of what this new phase of life has to
offer. I very likely am veering well off-topic with these sorts of musings, but
thanks for the replies and reassurance that I’m not alone in the struggle.

Hi Bunch! I have the honor of building up my friend's Roadini. I made a
budget based on his desires (mostly aesthetic) and my recommendations
(mostly functional). If purchased brand new, we would be a little over what
he was hoping to spend. So once again I'm here, asking if you have any of
the following parts in used but working condition:

   - Nitto Fairweather m174aa in 42 or 44
   - 80mm Nitto Technomic or comparable
   - 9spd bar-end shifters - silver - *Frictionable*
   - Brown Brooks Professional, Team Pro, something with the larger rivets
   - VO 50.4 Grand Cru Crankset (or TA Cyclotouriste?)
   - VO Contructeur Front Rack, or comparable
   - All Silver/Polished Wheelset - 100/130, 32h, 9spd capable. Need not be
a featherweight but preferably not something too heavy-duty (ie
   Cliffhangers)

Shipping, depending on part, will be to 11211 or 12526.

Thanks, as always, for your help!

Re: [RBW] All Time Best Paint Color

2022-09-08 Thread Eric Daume
No one’s going to mention the grey and red Hunq color? That’s a great
scheme.

Though for most iconic, I have to say Riv blue. It seems like it was the
color featured in all of the original pictures.

[RBW] Re: WTB 47-49cm Saluki or Bleriot

2022-09-08 Thread 'John Hawrylak' via RBW Owners Bunch
Brian

Just remember a Waterford AHH in 650B is essentially the same as a Saluki
(per the RBW literature/statements) and maybe more available since they
were around longer.

The 650B AHH-MUSA were in 47cm and 50cm frames and the 50 has 1cm shorter
effective TTL than a 47 (per the 2017 RBW geo charts, 53cm on the 50 and
54cm on the 47, due to 1° slacker STA on the 47 & both have the same HTA),
so if Reach is your concern, a 50 would be better. There maybe more 50s
AHH-MUSA out there than 47's. You may want to compare the geometries of the
Saluki and 650B AHH-MUSA to confirm.

[RBW] Re: I'm curious about the very early, blue Bombadil prototype

2022-09-08 Thread Garth
The Bomadil Prototype and introduction said it was a 650B mountain bike.
This changed for production and I think the 56 and on up were double TT,
with the 60 and on up were 700c. The thing about all of Riv's production
frame is that there are often unannounced changes with each new batch, and
with a different build location. So yeah, the Proto and production frames
are different in some ways but the fundamental ride quality did not. That's
what proto frames are for, to test out things before full production. I
bought that very black Bomba from Marty and repainted it a long time ago
and I was so glad it had 700c wheels. It was made my Waterford.

Re: [RBW] Stripping Black Parts and Burnishing

2022-09-08 Thread lconley
You cannot fit a normal 250mm seat post in this tumbler drum. That would
require a tumbler drum about twice as wide. The longest of the parts of the
stem barely fit on a diagonal. The interior width is only 6-1/2 inches
(165mm). There are some YouTube videos about people who make larger drums
and tumblers at home. Not sure how big you can buy non-commercial tumblers.

Tried stripping some black Shimano bar end pods yesterday. They laughed at
the EasyOff. Must be powder coated, or something else, but not anodized.
