It's part of the joy of it for me to stop and take pics and then share

A cool upgrade, added accessories or other changes on all you folks

2022-09-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
I have a Rivendell Silver 173mm crankset on my Quickbeam with a 68x103mm
Tange BB unit. There are two chain rings and they are 38/35. On my Phil
flip-flop rear track hub I am running two White Industries DOS ENO
freewheels. A 16/18 on one side and a 20/22 on the other. I avoid using
the 35x16 and the 38x22, but will use the other six combos a lot.

[RBW] Re: Roaduno substitute for a while...

2022-09-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
I'm running a 68x103mm bottom bracket with a Rivendell Silver crankset. My
two chainrings are on the "big" and "middle" positions.

Generally speaking, the BB you need depends on the crankset you have. If
you think the current BB on your Quickbeam is the right length, but you
want to upgrade it, then just measure it and replace it with a BB of the
same size. If you think it's not the perfect size, then figure out what it
is and consider buying the next size up or down. If you have no clue about
these things, hire a good mechanic who you trust to look it over and advise
you.

[RBW] WTB: Albatross, wheelset, front rack, tires

2022-09-19 Thread Patch T
Hi Folks,

I've found myself building up now 3 bikes for 3 friends. They're all mostly
done; just need a few additional parts. Budgets are reaching their max, so
I'm looking for some used parts in usable condition.

   - all-silver 700c rim-brake wheelset 100/130; 8/9/10 spd compatible;
rims need not be tubeless ready
   - Nitto Albatross, ideally HT but cro-mo ok
   - Front Rack, 2 flavors:
  - one that mounts to fork-ends (like VO Constructeur)
  - and one that mounts to mid-fork eyelets, or p-clamps (not
  canti-posts)
   - 700x38c tires (like GravelKing slicks)
   - 9 speed 11-32 or 11-34 cassette
   - and, a specific long shot: Nitto x Fairweather 174aa all-road bar in
   silver

Thanks all
Patch in NYC

[RBW] Re: Roaduno substitute for a while...

2022-09-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
Corwin pointed out that the existing RoadUNO prototypes have tilted rear
dropouts.

Yes, that was clear from the photos in Will's email update. In that same
email update from Will, he indicated that he thought they look too chunky,
and stated that Rivendell has selected a different, more svelte track end
from some other vendor, and that svelte track end will be used on the next
round of prototype. He indicated that there were enough changes coming
that rendered this round of prototypes almost irrelevant to what eventually
gets produced next year.

I change gears "all the time" on my multispeed single speeds. At least
twice per ride, so that feature was/is extremely valuable to me. The way
things seem to be moving, I'll either be doing a strict two-speed with a
single wheel position -OR- do away with the rear brake.

Bill - now I see why you like the rear dropout on that Quickbeam so much.
That's a lot of moving the wheel forward or backward for gear changes.
Must've be fun trying to figure what chain length you needed, though.

Crust sure does nice work. Interesting where they decided to put the break
- further up the seat stay. The break on most belt drive bikes that I've
seen are at the dropout.

Re: [RBW] Savannah recommendations and more?

2022-09-19 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
I'll second Tybee Island though it was probably as far back as 2004-2006
when we visited and not an experience viewed from a cyclist perspective at
the time. I was still in my mid-20's and had not yet incorporated cycling
much more than for occasional fair weather leisure on weekends or sporadic
undergrad commuting in the immediately preceding years. My wife and I had
stopped in Savannah for a few days before or after visiting friends in the
greater ATL area and it was early Oct., if I recall correctly. Mrs. Wilkes
was also highly recommended to us at that time but was unfortunately closed
whichever days we were around. We did, however, get to do a kayak tour
with Savannah Canoe and Kayak somewhere off of Tybee Island. It was just
the two of us and the guide, who I believe was the owner(British accented
gentleman whose name I can no longer recall, unfortunately.) We never saw
the brick and mortar shop, just arranged it by phone and met somewhere on
Tybee Island where we'd enjoy the day on the water, seeing the wildlife,
learning about the area, etc. I do remember being told about how the
nearby Little Tybee Island was in fact bigger in size than Tybee Island.
Maybe we kayaked from Tybee to Little Tybee and back... maybe it was just
another uninhabited but nearby barrier island. Either way, it was an
enjoyable experience and if ever returning I'd certainly plan to visit
Tybee again.

[RBW] Re: Green QB and Rock and Roads

2022-09-19 Thread Bill Lindsay
I have a green 58cm Quickbeam, and my original build used Rene Herse
Hurricane Ridge knobbies (700x42). That tire fits in front and is still on
the bike. In the back, it only fit when the wheel was towards the back of
the dropout. If the wheel is towards the front of the dropout, then it
rubs. I use most of the full length of the dropout for gear changes, so I
need my rear tire to fit EVERYWHERE. I switched out to a 700x40 with less
tread. Moving forward, I may switch to Steilacoom (700x38) or I may try to
do some chainstay manipulation, but for me the Hurricane Ridge only sorta
fits. If I was going to use my Quickbeam as a single gear bike, I'd use a
chain length that allows it. As a multi-gear single speed, it's a no-go
for me.

Yes indeed. I'd been thinking for a while that the reach with the DirtDrop
was a tad short and possibly causing my hand numbness so I jumped when the
FacePlaters were restocked. They're pretty and pretty rare, get em while
they got em!

[RBW] Re: Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-09-19 Thread Ben Adrian
Pointless updates because I just like talking bikes.

Ever since I rerouted my cables, my performance has been very good.
However, I've never tried any of the Suntour/Silver ratchet shifters and
I've always been curious. I found a used set here so I grabbed them. I
gently removed my rear derailleur cable, wrapped the cable and housing, and
tied it down to my rack. Then I mounted the SIlver shifter to the DT boss
an ran the a new rear cable to the RD. WOw, these are really nice. And the
direct cable run gives me the smoothest performance yet.

So now... set up the front and leave it as a DT shifter bike, or try
mounting the Silvers on my Shimano pods and do full friction bar-end?

[RBW] Re: Going around in circles with shifters.

2022-09-19 Thread Joe Bernard
It all depends on how much reaching you can live with. DT is simpler, more
direct and IMHO looks great, but I got no patience for reaching to the
downtube to shift. Bar shifting for me!*

*This also depends on how often you shift. I have physical issues that
require me to shift a lot in my hilly area to keep a good spin going, I
could probably live with DT if I rode my bike more like a singlespeed that
occasionally needs a different speed.

[RBW] FS, non Rivendell but fine steel steeds

2022-09-19 Thread Richard Rose
I thought this might be frowned on but I saw the vintage Gitane for sale
post so here goes.
A riding buddy of mine passed away almost two years ago and left his adult
daughters with his stable of bikes to sell. I have the bikes and am trying
to help them out as they are not local and just are not able to deal with
it. I will simply list the bikes here with sizes. If anything appeals to
you lets chat. I have a lot of pics & some historical perspectives to
share. Here are the bikes.
1975 California Masi (sold)
1984 Eddy Merckx Professional, lugged steel and fully pantographed
Campagnolo. $1,500.00. Beautiful restoration by Peter Weigle.
2000 Custom Seven Axiom, tigged steel, full Campagnolo 10 speed group and
shop built wheels. $2,500.00. Spotless, like new condition.
2015(?) Custom Mark Nobillette fillet brazed with mixed Shimano parts (10
speed) and shop built wheels. Barely ridden bicycle.
And finally, a bike I am hesitant to mention because I want it so bad. Date
unknown J.P. Weigle custom, perfect and repainted at some point by Peter.
Gorgeous lugs and paint. Full Campagnolo Record 10 speed (some carbon) and
shop built wheels with White Industries hubs. $3,500.00.
All prices are suggested and negotiable. Packing is $100.00 per bike by
local bike shop. They did a great job on the Masi. It arrived safely in
California, from Toledo, Ohio. Shipping via Bikeflights with extra
insurance was $185.00.
Please do contact me off list if any of these interest you. I will not try
to post all of the pics here. I will follow this post up with a single pic
of a geometry chart. Most are 57-58 size range, the Weigle is slightly
smaller at 55.5 square c/c. I have ridden each bike and they are really
good.
Thanks for your consideration.

Note: not certain of the exact accuracy of the dimensions given. For instance;
the Weigle is 55.5 square, center to center by my measure. Happy to double
check anything.

[RBW] Re: HUGE Rivendell archive update: Catalogs, flyers, brochures and more

2022-09-19 Thread Johnny Burrell
I've been trolling through old Riv Reader's, some fun reading I remember
doing a long time ago when those were new. Thanks for sharing and archiving!

Question though, and it's probably an easy one. I own a Hunqapillar and
love it. When was the Hunq offered? What years and how many years? Any idea
how many frames were sold?

Re: [RBW] FS, non Rivendell but fine steel steeds

2022-09-19 Thread Joe Bernard
Hi Richard,

The Seven is probably an incorrect seattube size, those usually (always?)
came with a steeply sloped toptube, so 58cm ETT is probably closer to a
52-53cm actual ST. Also it's titanium, I owned one for a while that was too
small but hoo boy was that a nice ride!

Mm, correction, I should have Googled first instead of relying on memory. I
see non-steep-toptube Axioms out there. Never mind! 🙋‍♂️

Wow! That's quite a stable and the prices are certainly reasonable...may
even be undervalued.

I think the 2001 Seven Axiom is actually titanium

2022-09-19 Thread Joe Bernard
That's a nifty brake hanger solution! What brakes? They kinda remind me of
Bruce Gordon and a couple others from the '90s whose names escape me now.

Eric, yes, so frustrating. The 2022 Platys were actually supposed
to be here in May, then August, now October. And the Rosco Plats being
delayed even though they are in the shop is so sad. If I had one on
 order
and lived within a 12 hour drive of Walnut Creek, I’d spend Labor Day
 driving to get my bike.

It’s extra sad for those who live in certain parts of the country -
 winter is coming.

I've got an 11cm, tempted to get a 13.5 but boy are they spendy. And yes,
incredibly nice. I will also add that they offer a perfect amount of rise
for a stem caddy which pitches the top of the bag favorably towards the
rider.

I think I can compare my custom to the original Platy as they were both
in the design process at the same time. They're both road-oriented with
v-brakes, I suspect the Platy is a little heavier-tubed because it was
built to some imagined rider/stuff weight limit for a production model
 (one
big benefit of custom). The geometry looks similar to me. The Platypus
toptube is a bit lower, mine wasn't geared so much to be a true mixte,
 just
lower than a diamond frame. I use a road fork, I think the Platy is
 beefier
and has more tire clearance. Attached is the geo chart Grant sent to Mark

As for the Rosco version I'm afraid I just don't know. Sorry!

Looks great! Very functional and comfortable. Maybe you will keep this one
a while?

Re your WTB, I have a set of brown Brooks roll-up panniers that I purchased
from someone in this group some years ago. I used them for groceries and
other shopping. Handy because they could be discreetly rolled up when not
in use. But they didn’t work great with the top rack on my grocery bike so
I moved on to metal basket style panniers. I can dig them up and take a
picture. Happy to sell for $50, including shipping. Here’s a link with pics
in black (mine are brown).

Hello

I'd love to buy a pair of good-ish condition Oracle Ridge endurance tires
for my old Atlantis that I increasingly ride mostly on trails.

Please let me know if you might have some you'd like to part with !

2022-09-19 Thread Joe Bernard
Haha, you wouldn't believe how often I'm asked if I'm going to keep this
one a while. Have I bought and sold a lot of bikes?? 🤣 Yes, this one stays
til I'm too old and creaky to pedal it, it's custom just for me! 🙂

Sure, I'll take a look at those bags. I'm not sure if brown will work for
me but they sure are nice. Let's see!

Sweet bike Joe. Great color and design choice. I'm curious, how
do you think this bike differs from the Rosco Platty, aside from big
 welds
 vs lugs?

[RBW] Re: Green QB and Rock and Roads

2022-09-19 Thread Philip Williamson
Ah, yes, Bill is correct. I had the gear changing in the hub when I ran the
Rock’n’Roads, and the axle was back in the slot. Current setup is two rings
and a double cog with fenders and 37mm tires for two fixed gears with
minimal axle movement.

I think I posted the last response from my phone, which is like writing
with an Etch-a-sketch in the Google Groups current “quiet firing” of this
service.

Re: [RBW] Re: Do Roadinis ride tall?

2022-09-19 Thread Philip Williamson
Without arguing against BB drop affecting handling and the perception of
handling, I can’t see how stack can make a bike feel or ride “tall,” IF the
bars are level with the saddle. I think the shorter reach makes you sit up,
raising your head and giving you a narrower base (ass to grips) which I
think might degrade balance on the bike. I’m much less “in” the bike on a
smaller bike, even with the saddle and grips up. Jim Bronson also says his
“tall” bike gives him a much more upright posture.

The reason I think reach drives the “tall” feeling more than stack: In my
mind’s eye I can put my hands on the bars, and the bike can grow or shrink
vertically and the stem and seatpost can make up the difference. My
position on the bike stays the same. If, however, I shrink the top tube, my
hands move back towards my hips and my head and CG move up.

I like to measure my bikes saddle-center to grip-center, rather than
saddle-tip to steerer-center.
