Analog Cycles makes really great wheelsets as well. They built me a 650b
Quill wheelset a few years ago and the whole process was top notch.

I don’t know about “best” (Rich?) but Riv themselves recommend Velocity builds.
They were very quick responding to me with a quote. The have a easy to use

2022-09-29 Thread Paul Choi
You need to have a set built for you. 1) Rich at Rivendell. 2) Local bike
shop. 3) One of the custom builders you can find online.
I had a good experience with Custom Wheelbuilder. I shipped my Shimano hubs
to them and they built a nice set of Velocity Atlas wheels for me.

Re: [RBW] Bucket List Ride

2022-09-29 Thread John Dewey
Steve, et. al

Ohio is great and, of course, Circleville, is the halfway point in one of
the most famous and long-running century rides in the world — TORSV.

Starting in Columbus traditionally on Mother's Day, the 210 mile, 2-day
ride heads south from the state Capitol building and follows the Sciotto
River 105 miles down to Portsmouth on Saturday and then back 105 miles on
Sunday to Columbus. Those of you out there, and I'm sure there are a few,
surly remember that delicious chicken dinner prepared by a corps of sweet
volunteers in Portsmouth. All you could eat and the perfect century dinner
party...shared by thousands. Pacelines with tandems out front stretching
out miles behind. All trying to shake off those cold Midwestern winters.

What a hoot...and apologies for hijacking the thread.

[RBW] Across the USA by Bike in 1983: A Rivendell-ish Adventure Documentary

2022-09-29 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
I received an email about an upcoming documentary series about a group of 31
teenagers who rode their bikes across the US in 1983:

https://www.shadowofawheel.com

The film looks very interesting, based on the trailer on the web site. Fans of
Rivendell will certainly see familiar themes that carry through to today:
simple bikes, total lack of lycra, and a love of cycling. I can imagine a young
Grant taking part in such an adventure.

I plan to watch for the release of the films in early 2023.

Re: [RBW] Hurricane Ian

2022-09-29 Thread George Schick
Thanks for the update. I too have always heard that if a hurricane tracked
up through the Tampa/St. Pete area at high tide the downtown areas would be
flooded. Sounds like a good thing that didn't happen. We do have friends
who are snowbirds and have property on Sanibel island. They're currently
here in the Midwest, but we're afraid to contact them about any problems
that may have occurred with any property in Florida since they may be
working with insurance companies, etc. at this point.

[RBW] Re: YOUR BACK SHRINKING

2022-09-29 Thread George Schick
I can relate to all of this. I'm in the early years of my seventh decade
now and I've only lost and inch in height, but I'm finding the stem length
of 110mm on my Ram to be a bit longer than what was comfortable when I
first got it almost 20 years ago. I hate to think about it, because it
will mean removing and replacing bar tape in order to install a shorter
stem, but as we trudge along we have to face issues like these. Oh well...

[RBW] Bucket List Ride

2022-09-29 Thread John G
Last week I had the chance to do a ride that I've wanted to do for a long
time. About 10 years ago I saw a photo on Flickr that I found very
appealing, and I decided that I would try to ride to that location and take
a photo there if the opportunity ever presented itself. It was not in any
exotic or extreme location, but the photo spoke to me of all that's
interesting about exploring on a bike and discovering new places.

I combined some riding with some family responsibilities last week on a
visit to Ohio and decided that now was the time to visit the site I'd
always wanted to.

I started my ride at A.W. Marion State Park in Circleville, Ohio and
started out on the country roads. I will say that Central Ohio is heaven
for riding a three speed. The hills are short, and not particularly
steep, but it is not so flat as to get boring. :)
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52374624141_7995c7daab_z.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52375040080_0853861072_w.jpg

Then it was back out to ride to my main photo location.

take my photo. A place absolutely new to me, but with a sense of
familiarity.

I expected it to be anti-climatic, but I was mistaken. It was a ride in a

back to my start.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Small Riv bag, brown

2022-09-29 Thread iamkeith
The reason they didn't do too many brown sackville bags was because the
fabric only came in too-narrow bolts. The small saddle bag was the biggest
item they could achieve. If what you need doesn't turn up, keep an eye on
the Acorn site. I think they still have brown in their production rotation.
