Hi Eric -

Not sure why you say you understand why no one wants it. I would wear it if
it were my size.

I think it would fit my friend Charlie Cunningham.

If you still have the Costco Cashmere, please send it to me.

Let me know if I can send you some funds to cover postage.

Charlie and Jacquie love to get sweaters - especially Cashmere. And this is
the right time of year!

Thanks, Jason I'm happy to share and glad if in anyway I've encouraged some
wrenching.

And thanks, Ryan, too! She digs the bike. And I think workshops, like

When I first decided to make a build video I was thinking of some other

expected the response to be so overwhelmingly positive. I really appreciate

[RBW] Winter Parts Bin Clear out

2022-11-13 Thread Michael Ullmer
Crost post from the i-bob list:

Clearing out more of the parts bins to fund a winter-time wheel build.
Prices do not include shipping.

1) Shimano 600 RD - $25
--RD-6401, great shape. I believe this is short-cage.

2) Campy Veloce RD 28.6 - $25

3) Suntour DT Shifters - $15

4) Suntour Thumbies - $25
--I had these in a previous post. In good shape, missing one of the rubber
thumb grips. I was thinking of just pulling the remaining one off, I like
them better without. These can be friction or index, though if index they
only work with the 3000 derailleur (per the sticker).

5) Thomson Elite Silver 27.2 Seatpost - $60
--250mm length, uncut.

6) Thomson Elite 27.0 Seatpost - $50
--Cut down to roughly 220mm, see picture with comparison to the 250mm for
length reference.

7) Suntour Cyclone 7000 Pedals - $35
--I had these in a previous post, they're now available again. Comes with
Cateye cages attached. I have not tried to clean these up too extensively,
some rust/beausage as shown in pics. Bearing spin smoothly.

8) Ritchey WCS 100mm 17deg 31.8 Stem - $35
--This came on a bike I bought, don't have any use for it.

9) Cinelli 1/A 90mm Stem and Cinelli 64-40 Giro d/Italia Handlebars - $45
--These came stock on a 1983 Trek 640 I bought recently. I'll have a post
up about that bike and its build soon. Stem has some road rash on the top,
still shiny everywhere else though. Bars still have hbar tape residue on
them that can be cleaned off.

[RBW] Re: When the Rivs are sold out and you need a bike for daily commuting...

2022-11-13 Thread Stephanie A.
I love your story about Byron! I was wanting a Platypus, but they were all
gone in my size at the time. Of course now they have some! But I’ve also
grown fond of the 700c-sized wheels on my Torino and may not want to go
down to 650. Maybe Riv will dream up something similar with 700c wheels in
my size, or maybe I’ll try to get a custom in a few years, or maybe some
other perfect bike will emerge. Who knows.

[RBW] FS: 61 cm Toyo A Homer Hilsen

2022-11-13 Thread David Carroll
$2450. I am willing to have REI ship it at buyers expense. I will keep my
saddle.

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1OeefpS48u-wgLaOtDpuYc4HewVltFt1T

I recently purchased a early model, Toyo-built A Homer Hilsen from the
previous owner in Los Angeles. My goal was to see if I would prefer the
Homer compared to my Romulus enough to justify the expense. I have invested
a few hundred dollars in new Dura Ace bar end shifters, a new XT cassette,
new 35 mm Gravelking slicks, and longer cables and cable housing to be able
to raise and lower the bars so I can find my desired height.

It is a very nice bike, but I realize once I put on larger tires I will not
sufficient standover for my preference, and I can already go up to 38 mm on
my Romulus.

I think the frameset is in very good condition, perhaps excellent. There a
few minor paint chips on a chain stay, and some chipping on the pointed
part of the seat tube / top tube lug pointing towards the saddle. I believe
this is a great opportunity for someone who wants a Toyo Homer in a 61 cm
to get one in terrific shape. It fits very much like my previous 61 cm
Atlantis. It actually handles in a very similar manner and that makes it
difficult to sell, but I want to get a fast drop bar mountain bike and a
slightly smaller 650b rando bike more than I want to have an additional
700c country bike.

If you want to purchase it without pedals, I would sell it for $2400.

I have a 77 cm saddle height set up as pictured. I would suggest this as a
minimum, and if you are a little taller than me you will probably be able
to run 40+ mm tires with zero issues. Please message me directly if you
have serious interest in this bike.

Regarding the rest of the parts -
Nitto Noodle
Technomic stem, 9 cm (I can swap for another length if you prefer, I have a
5, 8 and a 11 cm.
Dura Ace bar end shifters, new
Kickstand
Nitto seatpost
Velocity Dyad rims, XT hubs
XT Rapid Rise rear derailer
IRD Alpina front derailer

If you want to buy without the wheelset, I will sell it for $2100.

2022-11-13 Thread Ryan
Late to the party here...but Eric, I just love watching your bike-building
videos; love the calm almost Zen-like vibe and attention to detail . I may
have mentioned this before...but it bears repeating. Your partner looks
like she's enjoying her freshly-built bike. As she should. Watching you
build bikes reminds me of my late partner's wrenching skills , although we
didn't have a workshop like yours.

Nice restoration!

Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2022-11-13 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Hi Ryan:I share your inclinations on RBW designs. My 1st Riv was a Rambouillet in 2006. The Ram was conceived of as a successor to the Long Low and mine continues to be a great riding bike.  I next got a Saluki but decided it really wasn’t for me and re-sold it. My 3rd Riv was a Road prototype and I still have that one also. It is a regular Waterford Road front geometry with a level TT and standard HT mated to a slack angle / longer chainstay GP style rear layout and it rides great. Has the neat original Sachs designed lugs and Reynolds 753 frame set. It’s plenty light and fast but comfortable too.  BruceSent from my iPadOn Nov 13, 2022, at 11:34 AM, Ryan wrote:Definitely proto-Riv...somewhere around Ted Durant and Mr. Moore ...1993 X0-1 that I still have, 1997 A/R and 2001 LongLow influenced Curt Goodrich Road...but veering into swoopy with 2016 custom mixte which I ordered with less ornate lugs than the Glorius and Wilbury models.I get why Riv moved to TIG-welding for Clems and Roadinis ...but my heart is firmly attached to lugs, although...if I was more of a utility cyclist , I'd definitely consider one of the Clems. But, shopping is within walking distance so a Clem is not really required. I do applaud Grant's move to keep the durability and good design hallmarks of Rivendell while making them  more affordable, however.  Before I retired my 73/74 single-speed Peugeot PX-10 or my X0-1 were my daily commuters...so to speak to the visit https://groups.google.com/d/msgid/rbw-owners-bunch/40dd5cf0-9772-41c7-9a3e-89925a958892n%40googlegroups.com.

Thanks Eric! I failed to list in the items above but I'm also selling my

200.00 I'm eating the 21.00 plus taxes hopefully that's reasonable for
someone to pick it up. Again, flexible on most of the prices, just silly
how things collect, and sillier the things I've sold off and am now
searching for, haha.

PS. IF there is a tips sheet on how to use this page and communicate via an

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2022-11-13 Thread JAS
I'm like Roberta; I take care of my stuff and try hard to overcome the
desire to keep everything in like-new condition by "saving" items for
special times. Sometimes I have to take a breath and have a little
self-talk when it comes to my Rivs. "It's OK, it's just a bike. It's
meant to get dirty. It will be fine on the bike rack." This was repeated
many times when taking my dear Platypus on the rack for the first time,
knowing I had a five-hour drive and Platy would be covered in road grime.
This is even worse when the weather is snotty. However, I've figured out
to cover the saddle and just live with the rest. Cleaning rags are
essential gear and besides, it's more important to ride the bike, dirty or
not.

Theft is always at the back of my mind, especially when I found out how
easy it is to cut a lock. It has happened twice. I went on a summer
camping trip and left the keys to my 1Up rack at home. A handy camp-host
with a cordless grinder made quick work of it. Another time, I used my
OttoLock at the grocery store rack. The combination dial failed, so I went
next door to the hardware store to borrow a bolt cutter. The kind clerk
brought one out and cut the lock with one snip! Lessons learnedbut
still, I lock it up with my new lock and smile broadly when I come out of
the grocery store, see that beautiful design and relish the honesty of
humanity.

Thank you, Bill! I definitely put a lot of thought into converting the bike
into something way more useful that it had been and tried my best to source
some good-looking (but not too fancy) parts with a timeless feel to them.
Still kinda wish I had a more plain-looking rear mech. Hard to beat a

Re: [RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2022-11-13 Thread Ryan
Definitely proto-Riv...somewhere around Ted Durant and Mr. Moore ...1993
X0-1 that I still have, 1997 A/R and 2001 LongLow influenced Curt Goodrich
Road...but veering into swoopy with 2016 custom mixte which I ordered with
less ornate lugs than the Glorius and Wilbury models.

I get why Riv moved to TIG-welding for Clems and Roadinis ...but my heart
is firmly attached to lugs, although...if I was more of a utility cyclist ,
I'd definitely consider one of the Clems. But, shopping is within walking
distance so a Clem is not really required. I do applaud Grant's move to
keep the durability and good design hallmarks of Rivendell while making
them more affordable, however.

Before I retired my 73/74 single-speed Peugeot PX-10 or my X0-1 were my
daily commuters...so to speak to the other "precious" thread my Rivs are
not the bikes I'd lock up downtown or ride in winter with all the sleet and
slush. Maybe in a perfect world with no winter, but I can't bring myself to
do it in this one.

2022-11-13 Thread Roberta
That bike belongs to Jamie Kaplan who bought himself this gift and did it
up right. This picture isn’t as nice as his bike in person— the RBW blue
color of the frame is deeper. The shiny bits are oh so pretty. the back
bag is custom— slightly bigger than their burrito bag.

On top of that, he’s a really nice guy and so many of us got to meet him
and experience the bike in person. And, he does ride it! He’s on IG with
more pics

Good luck with the trade! I bet the extra endurance casing is crazy

a very durable tire. Have you ridden the Sparwood? I found it to be quite

[RBW] Re: When the Rivs are sold out and you need a bike for daily commuting...

2022-11-13 Thread Ezri Rose
That looks like it could be a good around-town bicycle. What did you change
on it? Will it take a front and/or rear rack?
I've been car-free since 2020, most of that time was in Denver. Now I'm in
Florida, but if you need any winter commuting advice, I've learned a thing
or two. Good luck on your car-free journey!

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2022-11-13 Thread Roberta
This got me thinking about most of my possessions. I take care of what I
own and although careful, little is so precious that I won’t use something,
even my Rivs. (There was a time I wouldn’t use something because it was
“too nice” for everyday so I’d use it once a year or two, missing the joy
on the other days of the year.) Still, I am careful. What I am more
concerned with is theft and road salt.

What Rivs were you considering for you commute? Distance? Terrain? Other
considerations?

I have a two mile flat commute through the city (lots of stop and go), and
do it with my mixtes: She-Devil or Platypus.A Homer Hilsen comes out on the
weekends for longer rides, when there’s less of a chance for unexpected and
quick dismounts.

2022-11-13 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
Looking to trade my Rene Herse tan sidewall Fleecer Ridge (29 x 2.2 aka

and in great condition. Would expect the same on the trade.

https://teravail.com/products/sparwood-tire?variant=39350966091827

right for local NYC pickup only).
