Re: [RBW] Flood Season Riding in CA

2023-01-08 Thread Mike Godwin
Jim

Don't forget that the impact by hydraulic mining in the 1860s-1875 or so,
irreparably modified the American-Sacramento Rivers' inland delta by
raising the streambed something like 15 feet, I've read. I think the 1862
flood may have been slightly influenced by the hydromodification, however,
no human settlement can withstand 30+ days of atmospheric rivers. Of
course, by that time, the lower San Joaquin, Kings, Kern, Tule, Kaweah
Rivers (Tule-San Joaquine basin) had nascent beginnings of modifications.
The northern San Juaquin basin and Sac/American Rivs were certainly
modified by then. (Say, anyone have historic meteorological data from
1861-1862, how do ocean temps compare with what is happening now?)

So much of the last 100 or so years, the flood stage is predicated on the
man-made stream profile, in addition to engineering "improvements." I
suspect the river levees were constructed from the transported sediment
from hydraulic mining, thus bringing the stream bed to pre-mining or deeper
elevations. But then the levees constrained the bank width with later
ramifications. (When were the river flood stage weirs and bypasses
constructed?) During a related project in my consulting years, this paper
came out highlighting the DoE accomplishments of cascading solutions needed
to correct compounding problems. Closing_the_Circle_Report.pdf (energy.gov)

 I
see regional hydraulic modifications as similar large-scale challenges but
less serious than radioactive waste. Rad waste is acute environmental
health impacts, vs the delta and all of California's surface water plumbing
are subject to multiple chronic risks.

All yuze Sacramento Delta ibobs stay safe and on high ground this next
week. NOAA forecasts look pretty grim, at least here on the central coast.
4-5 inches of rain in the next 2-3 days.

I like the 38s a lot. I don't have caliper to measure but didn't have an
issue on the rims. You can't go much wider with the tires though and the
frame.

On the bars, with the mustache I would definitely go short stem. I think so
much depends on body type am not sure I could say how it changes the bike.
I'll add some new photos once the storm passes.

2023-01-08 Thread Joe Bernard
Apparently the fillets cost more to do, the Gus/Susie are already $250 more
than the lugged frames and were going to go higher if they did another run.
These are great frames, if money/opportunity ever lines up for me I'm going
to grab a Gus. If you want one now and have the cash, buy it!

2023-01-08 Thread DavidP
J - Yeah, I'm in Chelmsford (just south of Lowell). It's a pretty standard
NE suburban area but one thing this part of MA does well is having lots of
public "open space" land dotted throughout various towns. None of them are
very large but you can string them together and make some great loops.

My 22 were all in Google photos so I made an album there and then took a
screen shot (pretty similar to the landing page for Paul's flickr album).

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-08 Thread Piaw Na
Get well! I've been riding, getting stuff in between the bouts of rain here
in the Bay Area. We did a ride today, but I wasn't on my Roadini, since
with all the mud off pavement I wasn't going to try riding off pavement
today. With trees and power lines down here and there, there are lots of
road closures, but of course whenever I see one of those road closures, I
always take the road because that means there are no cars. Today's ride
went through a road that was closed because of a downed tree. Big problem
for cars, no problems for
cyclists:

(sorry, you'll have to login or create an account with amazon to see the
photos). Strava link: https://www.strava.com/activities/8361168853

With all the rain that's been forecast it doesn't look like I'll be riding
off pavement until at least February.

[RBW] WTB: Extra tall vintage road frameset w/ short top tube

2023-01-08 Thread Andrew Turner
My wishlist of a frameset is as-follows:

   - Seattube C-C measuring 63-65cm
   - Toptube C-C measuring 57-58cm
   - 130/100 dropout spacing (126 is fine too)
   - Lugged 531 or similarly light-ish steel
   - Clearance for 28mm tires

I'm happy as a clam on my Waterford but it's only a 61cm frameset so
there's quite a bit of seatpost and quill stem showing but being the
not-so-flexible human that I am, it's tough finding taller frames with a
shorter toptube. If anyone has something they've long-since replaced with a
riv, I'd be very interested!

Cheers
Andrew

[RBW] Re: FS: Roadini 54 $1400

2023-01-08 Thread jamin orrall
Don't want to thread hijack but I was wondering how those tires felt on
the narrow mavic rims? do they measure close to 38? I have older open pros
and I am considering those tires, I think the rim width is similar.

just don't need it. I would love to sell locally in Portland Oregon. It
has a different seat. Might be open for a trade but not sure if I need
another bike. I didn't tape the bars because if I keep it I'll switch the
 bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: HUGE Rivendell archive update: Catalogs, flyers, brochures and more

2023-01-08 Thread Patrick Moore
That 1994 Gazette is a blast from the past; I remember receiving it and
reading about Pino Morroni as I was probably Bob # 4301. Randy Quaid and
Meg Ryan owned XO-1s; I either missed that 30 years ago or didn't know who
Randy Quaid or Meg Ryan were -- quite possible. And I remember WordPerfect;
possibly Wordstar too.

Thanks to Marty for scanning these.

[RBW] 22 for 2022

2023-01-08 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
*(I've posted this on the i-BOB list too, so forgive me):*
My favorite 22 bike related images for 2022. (Oops, as hard as I tried, 2
dozen was as close as I could get, so I cheated):
https://www.flickr.com/photos/bikecrazy-paul/albums/72177720305087997
The hardest part was to keep it fairly strictly bike related and bike-trip
related. Both of my Rivendells are a major part of the album, but a few
others are in the mix.
What's yours?

[RBW] FS: New 57cm Roadini Frameset (Orange) + headset, 559 brakes, Nitto seatpost

2023-01-08 Thread Andrew Turner
I bought the frameset new from Riv a month ago but after 50 miles of riding
I simply do not enjoy the way it rides compared to my other road bike so
I'm casting this one back out. It's got the FSA headset installed with some
pewter headset spacers from BlueLug, new Tektro 559 brake callipers and a
new Nitto S65 300mm seatpost. There's a few paint nicks I gave it because
I'm a sloppy mechanic and installing fenders was a wrestling match, but
nothing serious or all that visible.

I'm pretty bummed it didn't work out for me but I hope it finds a new home!

Asking $1375 which will include shipping, DM if you want pics

Cheers,
Andrew

[RBW] Re: Some really nice Rivendell wool…

2023-01-08 Thread 'Joel S' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have issues with profiteers and as much as I might want something refuse
to buy from them. I guess it is the way of the world. For the most part
on the forum and iBob we don’t see much of that. I still regret selling
most of my ibex wools here but I know they went to good homes.

I like to call such illumination "The Midnight Sun" as truly ... The
Sun never sleeps.

[RBW] Re: Sharing Your Winter Ride Fotos 2023

2023-01-08 Thread Takashi
Leah,
Thank you for the video, your Platypus with lots of lights is so fabulous!
It sure looks like Michigan is a tough place to ride bikes when there is
heavy snowfall.
As someone commented cross country skiing might be fun.
Here's a photo from last year:
https://flic.kr/p/2mZYVer

Paul,
Thank you. It's natural that higher, mountainous places get more snowfall.
West Virginia has more mountains? Now I understand why John Denver sang
"West Virginia, Mountain Mama..."

Dave,
I agree with Eric, your photos are great!
" Sorry for the number of photo"
No, not at all. The more photos the better.
I scrolled through your Instagram posts, they're all beautiful!

John,
The monochrome-ish photo is a genuine "Winter Photo."
Maybe it's the high latitude that makes daytime shorter than in most places?

Eric,
It's same in Japan that places where there is little snowfall don't have
infrastructure to handle snow.
Two inches of snow turns Tokyo into a chaos.

Takashi
