Re: [RBW] Re: Fendering My Atlantis

2023-01-20 Thread Luke Hendrickson
I just finished the install this evening. I needed to slightly squish the
rear fender at the chain stay mount and do the same for the front fender
with the fork. Clearance wasn’t compromised however it added a certain
level of difficulty to the front fender install. I still need to finish
adjusting the spacing/alignment in the front, and I’m quite satisfied with
the rear fender. I’ll be sure to snap some photos in the daylight tomorrow
for reference.

2023-01-20 Thread Kim Hetzel
I am right here Jake. Come on in and join the Selle Anatomica H1 saddle
Club. Kick to the side your Brooks saddle along with mine. We are done !

Very nice coincidence that the big "H" that is stamped on the saddle
matches with Hillborne! Wonderful feature !

Nice build on your Silver Streak Sam Hillbourne.

Long may you ride with smiles and joy.

Reginald - yes, a few! I switched to bar ends as thumbie mounts were
temporarily out of stock and I was impatient. Lots of downstream effects
from that one. I originally wanted to go with Ergon cork grips with
something like a Billie or a Crumworks bar. I’ll see if the bar-ends on
 my
old Albatross and prodigious use of Newbaums works. It’ll be creative
(nice word for obviously DIY). If it’s not comfy, easy enough to make a
 change.

With the gigantic pedals, I am concerned with toe-to-tire spacing, so
am holding off on fenders. Also no decision on racks. Crushed that the
 Nitto Potluck rack is NLA.

Getting there. Riv box delivered today, more work this weekend.
Assuming the Nexave derailer doesn’t derail me, should be finished up and
ready to ride. (Whoa that’s a big photo - sorry).

[RBW] Re: Must see bike shops in Philly

2023-01-20 Thread Roberta
There are LOTS of bike stores in Philly, but these two — Keystone Bikes and
Via bicycles—are my favorites. You might also want to check out Firth and
Wilson Transport Cycles, even though I haven’t been there myself I’ve
spoken with Simon and visit their booth at the Philly bike expo.

Keystone works my Rivs, because the mechanics “understand” Rivs and are
current or former Riv owners. I bring my commuting bike to Via Bicycle, who
specialize in commuter and city older used steel frames bikes. Right after
I got my Platy, I rode it past Via Bicycle and Curtis said “oh, a PLATYPUS”
and admired it for several minutes. I didn’t know he knew Riv!

I live three blocks from Via. If you need anything while here or if you
want to go for a ride , just send me a PM. As long as your pbh is about an
83, I have a bike for you to borrow.

Re: [RBW] Paul Touring vs. Neo-retro question

2023-01-20 Thread J G
I use the touring brake up front when I run them for mountain mountain
bikes and loaded tourers due to higher mechanical advantage, as already
mentioned.

I will often run the Neo-Retro up front with a Touring in the rear for
Rando, light touring and city bikes where that is less important to me.
Good setup and good compassionless housing is what makes the difference
for me in any brake and the Neo-Retros work just fine for me in many
applications.

Re: [RBW] Paul Touring vs. Neo-retro question

2023-01-20 Thread J J
Scott, I’ve used both, and as hard as I’ve tried to discern a functional
difference, I honestly just couldn’t. They felt the same to me. Both felt
great and had plenty of stopping force. I don’t know if this is because of
they way each was set up and dialed in. But neither lacked anything. I
don’t consider myself a super expert in setting up cantis, either.

Function aside, I very much prefer how the wider profile Neo-Retros look
over the Tourings. I love how the Neo-Retros look both old school and
modern.

[RBW] Paul Touring vs. Neo-retro question

2023-01-20 Thread greenteadrinkers
If you had to choose between the Paul Touring Canti or the Neo-Retro for a
front brake, which would you pick and why?

Curious about how much functional difference exists between the 2 models.

Thanks,
Scott

Thanks for that great example and photos (and nice Appaloosa!). VO lists

Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-01-20 Thread Eliot Balogh
Very nice. I’m not familiar with that model rear derailleur. It may have a
different pull ratio than the 9 speed road shifters. Assuming that your
limit screws are set up properly it may just be an issue with cable
tension. It’s probably not a b screw issue if you can shift it smoothly
with friction. Is it skipping in some gears ? When it’s happening and you
look at it from behind does the chain look closer to one of the neighboring
gears ? If it’s rubbing the bigger cog then turn your barrel adjuster
clockwise. If it’s rubbing against the smaller cog, turn it counter
clockwise. Do this in small increments (1/4 turn) until it stops skipping
and looks to be centered in that gear.

Constructive feedback: your chain looks a hair tight to my eyes but it may
be just right for big-big which is discouraged but semi appropriate in a
double setup. I wouldnt worry about it but when it needs to be replaced,
try going one link longer and seeing if you can get away with that without
rubbing the bottom of the derailleur. Also, is your saddle rotated ?

Sorry for the unsolicited advice. Looks great. Glad you are loving it !
Thanks for the Riv Bandana. It’s sweet.

It's a brand new $1750 frame so sure, he can try to get that money back.

[RBW] Selle Anatomica carbon rails with Nitto S65 seatpost?

Simple question,
I have a set of carbon rails from Selle Anatomica I'd like to install but
wanted to double-check that the Nitto S65 seatpost I'll be using won't
present a problem. Would I need to opt for a double-bolt design instead?

There is little more satisfying than seeing how a much-loved bike has
changed over a couple years, with signs of use increasing. Really
appreciate the update - it looked great at the start, and even better now.

While I don't have any regrets with the bikes I've built over the past few
years, I can't help but wish I had picked up a 52cm Clem L back when I got
my 45 H (which proved to be a bit too small, and a bit stiffer than I
wanted) as I can see how immensely useful it would be for me. Alas, I can't
fit more bikes and don't want to sell the ones I have!

Huh! That's almost certainly the Platypus frame listed on Facebook group
Rivendell Bicycles buy/sell/trade for $2000 + shipping because "this is the
amount i spent to get it in my hands". So you'd be paying full retail price
plus shipping the frame twice. Maybe he'll have luck after Riv sells all of
theirs.

The Custom uses the "centered" cable guide.2 of the bikes with derailleurs and kickstand plates and offset cable guides have front derailleurs - they work perfectly with the offset cable guide. In my mind, that is the purpose of the two holes in the cable guide, one for bikes with no kickstand, one for bikes with the kickstand. I think some of you are creating a solution for a problem that does not exist. Note that if you in fact mount a kickstand, with or without the kickstand plate, the kickstand itself will be in the way of the cable if you do not offset the guide. I realize that the cables may not be bilaterally symmetrical with the downtube when offsetting the cable guide, but we need not play by the Velominati rules when assembling a Rivendell (Velominati rules dictates that you cross the cables anyway). Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell-esq fat bike

2023-01-20 Thread Joe D.
Thanks for those insights Keith!

I came across the scapegoat V2 geometry chart (attached). Interesting
comparison to the current version (at the bottom of this
link: https://crustbikes.com/products/scapegoat).

When I reached out to Crust they said the current chainstay measurement of
451mm is with the rocker dropouts all the way in, and you can get an
additional 20mm by pushing them out. So size Large could then conceivably
get a 471mm chanistay and 1130mm wheelbase.

[RBW] Re: Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-01-20 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Have you looked at the SimWorks "Obento" rack?

Hi David, yes I did. Jess (of Tunitas) directed me to the Obento after I
inquired what that beautiful rack was on her bike pictured on the Riv
site. Sadly, not the same aesthetic as the Potluck. Similar function
though.

If Vince knew any better, he would have talked me out of it.I've
never built a bike from (mostly) scratch before, and of course it had to
 be
a Riv. Gutsy. There may be other less flattering words for it.

Learning from all of you has given me false bravado to forge ahead, so
I shall. Picking parts has been a delight. I have been embracing the
anticipation of arriving shiny bits as patience will most definitely be
virtue. Just one more box from Riv and I'll have all I need. I think I
have a hammer around here somewhere.

If I blow it, you'll never hear from me again. If it rolls fast and
true, I will post a glorious, victorious photo from Flatistan, FL.

See any parts you like? Wish me luck!

[RBW] Re: FS: Riv Adjacent Wool, Leather, and Patagonia

2023-01-20 Thread Conway Bennett
I'm adding a newly purchased pair of DUER Stay Dry relaxed fit jeans in
black size 32x32. They are stretchy and fit a bit big in the waist. I
wore these once, but I'm an all cotton jeans, Carhartt, or Dickies person
and don't want these lying fallow in my closet. Very comfy, just not for
me. $39 net to me shipped in the USA. It's what I paid less tax and
shipping.
