Re: [RBW] Re: Just restored '95 Riv Road

2023-02-09 Thread Ryan
My 1997 A/R was painted Sherwood Green..which I really like. But the lugs
are less elaborate...so they don't show upbut given those gorgeous RS
designed lugs you have, you make a really good point that the blue
highlights them well. That is a beauty!

This may be my first post here, though it's likely I posted way back

... So I just had my 1995 Rivendell Road restored at Waterford
Precision Cycles late last Fall. I actually ordered the frame in 1995, it
was brazed at the Waterford factory in late '95 and delivered to me in
January of 1996. So I consider a 1995. It was originally Sherwood Forest
 Green.

 Here it is now:

 [image: Rivendell Studio 1-28-230034- Format10 export.jpg]

By luck or happenstance, I actually worked directly with Richard
Schwinn on the project and I gravitated toward the color "*English
Light Blue metalic" *when I saw a sample *. *At first I wasn't sure
the re-paint would happen as a few surface rust spots could have been
 worse
than suspected, but all the potential problems turned out to be
 superficial.

I rode this bike over the last 27+ years in a variety of
configurations: as a near-racer, later a fendered commuter, at some
 points
I added indexed Suntour Superbe derailleurs and later an old Simplex rear
friction derailleur. It had Modolo brakes for years as well as some 1989
single Pivot Dura-Ace calipers. Eventually it received hand-me-down older
racing bike parts, Shimano and Campy, from my racing bikes and it is now
pretty much a traditional British style race bike in the tradition of the
Bridgestone RB-1, except with 11-speed drive train.

This current build is mostly Campy with an Athena rear derailleur (I
wanted a lot of chrome), Record square taper BB and crank (maybe my
favorite crank of all time), rebuilt Record hubs, Chorus calipers and
record front derailleur.. The seatpost is a cool Salsa that can be tilted
with out loosening the clamp. Stem is a wonderful old Nitto Pearl. Rims
 are
Hed Belgium with 28c Rene Hearse tires. The seat is a no-name something or
other I found on Amazon and bought for the color, turns out to be a great
 seat for me.

So I just finished the build last week and felt this was a good place
to share. I have a particular affinity for the Richard Sachs designed lugs.

Paired very nicely with those Dia-Compe levers, which I think are really
nice...as nice as Pauls IMO.

I know, I know, Paul Components is a US company. I had their Racers
installed on my mixte and I could've gone all in and got leversbut
dammit, the dia-compes are nice...and reasonably priced.Just sayin'

[RBW] Re: Hillborne vs. Romulus?

2023-02-09 Thread Dave C
Dan, I have been meaning to write a post about some long term riding
comparisons I have been making between a Toyo Homer and a Toyo Romulus. I
have more to say, but I will keep it simple for the moment - yes, there is
a difference. I have a 59 cm Romulus that rides differently, more flexy in
a good sense, than the 61 cm Homer. I will add more later, but I believe
the Romulus is at my weight -175 pounds - a better ride for light loads and
fast rides, and the the Homer is a little more stiff, perhaps an advantage
with greater weight loads. I would wager the Sam will be more like the
Homer than the Romulus. If you have a 59 cm Romulus, I will buy it from
you. I have. side pull Romulus and would like a canti one as well.

The pedals are Speedplay Zero, now part of the Wahoo product line. I've

[RBW] Re: Platypus questions

2023-02-09 Thread Joe Bernard

Can concur. My 54.3cm custom (79 PBH) has a Platypus-like to toptube which
I consider a "mid-tube" that falls between a traditional diamond frame and
step-through. It's great for stopping for a minute to get both feet down
and check my phone or whatever, but I've had very little success stepping
through it to get on or off the bike. I always kick it and I paid a lot of
money for all that fancy Joe Bell paint so...I don't do that anymore! Clem
L is the trick for stepping through.

Also the L is probably a softer ride. I haven't ridden a Platypus but I
owned its predecessor, a 55cm Cheviot, and it was notably stiffer than the
two sizes of Clem L (45 and 52) that have passed through my hands.

 Hi Doug,

With the purchase of my Clem Smith Jr. "L" bicycle, it was the best
option for me in choosing a bicycle with a step-through frame with an
upright riding position as a senior cyclist. Yes, I had trouble swinging
 my
right leg over the back end of my previous bike, as well. I have been
looking for these requirements in a bike for quite a few years.
Furthermore, I enjoy the Clem's capabilities as being a ATB. A very solid
 and sure-footed bike.

The Clem maybe an option for you ?

[RBW] Re: Just restored '95 Riv Road

2023-02-09 Thread Peter Guyton
Well I live outside Portland Maine and the weather definitely has not been
perfect ! though I did actually see some people riding outdoors today
(it hit a balmy 45 today after being -17 last Friday). Riding here is
great from April thru September though, and the summers don't get so hot.

[RBW] Re: Just restored '95 Riv Road

2023-02-09 Thread Peter Guyton
Jock,
As additional info: Richard Sachs designed the curvey lugs for the first
RIv Roads. I didn't know that in 1995 but saw it in one of the original
catalogs. Yeah, there is definitely a difference when you turned the
wrench yourself. Been a while but it was fun. I didn't wrap the bars so
great but may try to do it again (can't tell in the photos hopefully).

I just love the color. The original Sherwood Forest just never did it for
me, it sort of hid the nice lugs or made them less obvious. Good luck with
the restore!

[RBW] Re: Just restored '95 Riv Road

2023-02-09 Thread Peter Guyton
Edwin,
The cost was probably about $1,100 when it was all said and done, excluding
a little extra work I had to pay for (I left the headset in and they
charged me to take it out and replace the cups and one other spot where a
bolt was stuck behind the BB where you can attach the bottom of the
fender). It was all fair I think.

The panels and extra touches (head tube, paint on top of fork crown) cost
extra. I think you could do a more basic paint job for under $1k. Now, a
new frame of this caliber would probably cost $2,500+ no?

I used to live in Stamford CT where the italian center would host a Ferrari
show in the Spring most years (I think they stopped now). People would
drive into the show in new and old Ferraris; one was a 1963 GTO worth
(back in 2007 or so) something like $3m or $5m and there was another 1938
(?) Alfa Romeo that won Lemans that year. At the end of the show, the owner
of the Alfa (also worth multiple $millions) hopped in the car and drove hit
home on the street. I was sort of in shock but also though it was pretty
cool. So I feel like my Riv Road should be ridden, you know? I won't ride
it a ton but I'll get out there!

I can't remember precisely off the top of my head, but if i recall the
imaginary TT is around 70cm.

I have a 59 clementine with bullmoose boscos and a 64 clem Jr. with a 90mm
stem and loscos are *very similar * in total reach.

I currently am running a positive rise 130mm ritchey force stem and loscos
and find it extremely comfortable. I find the fit to be quite flexible.

Im around 6' 1" with an 89.5 PBH

Peter,

That is a beautiful bike!
Perfect job by you and Waterford.

How much did it cost to do? Because I will do that to one of my bikes one
day, and want to start saving!!

You could literally just hang that on the wall as a beautiful thing to look
at every day...

[RBW] Re: Just restored '95 Riv Road

2023-02-09 Thread Tom Goodmann
What a good story of bicycle and bicyclist! Thank you for including a
great set of photos; as everyone has said, the restoration is beautiful,
offering testimony too to Waterford as a do-it-all shop.

One of the many things I appreciate about bicycles is the long lives of
multiple use and pleasure they have--and in this case, with one owner only!

[RBW] Re: Rivs on film

2023-02-09 Thread Drew Saunders
Looking at my Flickr stream, I only found two photos of my Riv taken with a
film camera. I thought I had done more over the years, but maybe I just
haven't scanned them and put them up.
https://flic.kr/p/67KheV
https://flic.kr/p/67PtfS

They're obviously taken one after the other, back on Pi Day of 2009. I
don't recall if I had any pie that day. Anyway, I have long since sold that
Fuji GA645zi medium format "monster point and shoot" (of course, I sold it
before the prices exploded...grumble), but I do ride my Quickbeam when I'm
taking the large format 4x5" Ebony camera out to shoot at local gardens. I
just haven't yet turned the lens on the bike, maybe I will next time.

That Fuji camera had a data back, so it could imprint focal length and
exposure information in the gap between frames, which was quite handy.

Got a roll of film back yesterday and it had several shots of my
bikes/rides! I thought ya'll might enjoy! Feel free to post any recent
Rivendell film shots if you have some.

Taken with a Nikon FE on Kodak portra film. Still learning how to use
an slr and it's kinda heavy/bulky but I got inspired by all those RSF
riders with big honkin cameras slung across their backs.

Re: [RBW] Re: Just restored '95 Riv Road

2023-02-09 Thread Cody Marvin
I currently have a 1995 Riv Road at Waterford waiting to be repainted also.
Mine was originally the English Light Blue, but I haven't decided whether
to stick with that or go with a different color. Yours looks terrific,
definitely an argument for sticking with that color. Thanks for sharing.

Peter, that is a timelessly beautiful bicycle. Bravo for spending the $$

riding a bicycle you have owned and maintained for years and years. Richard

This is great. Fun to watch.
Beautiful country. I love it when a place is unmistakable for any other.

Reminded me of the Claude Lelouch film Renez-vous

Another very different type of "riding" mind you.
Thanks for sharing!

It's from Safa Brian, a former bicycle messenger with a popular cycling
YouTube channel. And you might have seen in some of Terry B's videos (also
NSFRBW). The video collects some of his long descents from a trip to
Switzerland in 2022.

There are beautiful vistas, impressive roads, cows, bridges, cobbles, fog,
mist, chateaux, tunnels and stunning mountains. There is crazy speed,
carbon bikes, dangerous maneuvering, fast music and a crash.

I've watched this twice in the past few months and find it totally
mesmerizing, it's a blast. I've read about all of these passes in Jobst
Brandt's alpine ride diaries so it's nice to have some moving pictures of
these places.

At over twenty minutes there's plenty to see and there are some nice scenes
intercut with what looks like 8mm film footage and alpine b-roll.

Too crazy for you? A fun viewing experience? I don't think I'll ever ride
anything like this but I've found it a real pleasure to watch.

[RBW] Hillborne vs. Romulus?

2023-02-09 Thread Dan Sullivan
Wondering what people who have experience with both the early Hillbornes
with cantis and the Romulus think about the two in terms of overall
impression -- is one "speedier" than the other, or is one stiffer, etc,
those kinds of things. I get that the Hillborne is a tad longer wheelbase
and more tire clearance, but just wondering if one or the other is
noticeably stiffer than the other?

Thanks, I have gotten the itch to change things up in my fleet (of two,
really not a fleet at all) and since test rides are out of the question
looking to the group for advice/opinion.

thanks, Dan in the deep freeze of winter in Mount Horeb, WI

ps. I have a canti-Rom, looking at a first-gen green Sam

Tempted by the 47s they have on the site. I’m 5’8, 79 pbh. I’m worried id
be a little too folded up running drop bars and a dirt drop stem. If anyone
has experience with sizing down in this frame lmk!

I certainly plan to pack my new Clem L for camping!

Long ago I spent weeks in Europe (on several different trips) on a
packed-out Motobecane Grand Touring bike with skinny little tires. I added
a temporary Blackburn rear rack, slapped some panniers on it, threw some
sort of front-bar bag on the handlebars, and despite tons of flats (we
eventually stuck to the roads rather than gravel trails), the bike did
 fine
and we had a blast. I’m sure it wasn’t pretty, but it was wonderful, and
now I can flip a bike over and whip out a tube change like nobody’s
 business.

(I’ve traveled a number of the Adventure Cycling Association routes the
same way, too, Jeff, and it was so much fun to see how other bicyclists
handled their gear. We can complicate the most simple experiences, and I
want to be more like those easy travelers…they make me laugh)

Anything will work, if you let it. :) Have fun on your bike-camping
 trips.

[RBW] 64cm Clem "Reach"

2023-02-09 Thread DamonLee
Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone who owns a 64cm Clem L could attempt to provide a
reach measurement of this size?
I appreciate Riv showing geometry charts as of late, but they are yet to do
that for the Clem L model

Thanks in Advance

[RBW] Re: Platypus questions

2023-02-09 Thread 'Steven Seelig' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hi Doug,

My PBH is a little higher than yours. I just got a new Platypus, well last
Fall, and followed Riv's advice in getting the 60cm size along with pretty
long reach Nitto Loscoe handlebars. Looks like the photos here:
https://www.rivbike.com/products/frame-platypus-2021

My experience is that I sometimes step through to get on the bike, but it
is sorta hard to do that think where you take your leg as you are about to
dismount while riding and slide it through in front of you to get both feet
on the ground.the gap . The frame is just a bit too high for that. I
compare that to my first generation Xtracycle long tail, where I have to
dismount that way because if I swing my leg around I would kick my kid or
any cargo quite inelegantly.

As for mounting the bike, or getting off once stopped, there is still an
extra bit of leg lifting to do. So I think Kim is onto something here with
the Clem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Platypus questions

2023-02-09 Thread chintan jadwani
Hi Doug

Whats your current stem and handlebar setup? I think the platypus will have
a longer reach than your Atlantis but you can get the bars closer with the
Bosco/tosco handlebars (i think they come back 10 inches from the stem
clamp). Another way to make the reach easier is to get your handlebars
higher :) see https://www.rivbike.com/pages/the-top-tube-ruse

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Single-Bolt Stem Spreading Options

2023-02-09 Thread Brian Forsee
In typical fashion for me, my bars arrived and I had not yet made a move on
purchasing a stem-spreading device. Eager to install them, I dug around my
tool bins. Drawing inspiration from Bill's recommendation of the park disc
tool, I used a short and wide wood chisel with a rag over it to spread the
stem. It worked quite well! I don't think I did any damage to the chisel,
however this approach is probably not ideal if you are exceptionally
particular about the edges on your chisels. Cheers!

[RBW] Re: Roaduno catnip

2023-02-09 Thread dane...@gmail.com
It seems this bike will be stickin with the longer chain stay/longer front
end for swept bars style of things. Has anyone ridden that type of
Rivendell single speed often? I'm curious what it feels like to do a lot
of out of the saddle climbing in a hilly area.

 John,
There is one on the linked blog below. You'll need to scroll a bit to
find the photo. Note that the fork is mismatched.

Dang, Jamin, these are great. I especially like that pic of your Homer in
shadow with the mountains in the sun. Really good!

[RBW] Re: English subtitles for Blue Lug's video

2023-02-09 Thread Masa
Eric,

That's right! It's helpful to see the differences of the Rivendell bikes
not only from the divisions (Hilli bike, roadish etc) but also the
gradation (Thick to Slim).

I'm glad that you enjoyed watching the video!
I liked the blog post you shared very much as well. It's been always
fun to read his blog posts.

Get some nice healing on your Clem and have a nice weekend:)

 Hello all!

This is my first post of 2023, I hope you are having good rides!

Last month I happened to have an opportunity to make subtitles for
Blue Lug’s YouTube channel and now the “Rivendell Chart” video is
 English
 subtitled!

Let me tell you how it happened. First of all, When I finished
watching the video I felt that “oh this video should be shared with
 English
speaking Rivendell fans(means this "RBW Owners Bunch) too” so I
 started
 translating the video briefly.

Then I found someone commented that “Subtitles please!” and Blue
Lug replied “we’d love to but at the moment we are too busy so we need
 a
help”. I thought that “why don’t I do that?”

It took me a week to complete subtitling between my work, playing
with my baby, feeding my baby, putting my baby to sleep, sleeping with
 my
baby, chatting with my wife and commuting by my Platypus.

It was a really fun work to do related to not only the things I’m
passionate about which are languages and bicycles but also favourite
 people
who are Rivendell and Blue Lug!

I would be very happy that if I could be a help for Rivendell and
Blue Lug. Ultimately I hope people who watch the subtitled video will
