Patrick - why did you decide to terminate the SA shift cable at a lever
mounted on the top tube instead of running it into a housing and up to the
bars? Squeamishly, I detect a potential groin injury from that location.

I fitted VO 700 x 63mm mudguards (they actually measure 63.5mm wide) to my
Appaloosa. They just fit with only a fraction of a millimetre clearance
each side where they pass between the fork blades - I fitted plastic frame
protector dots on the inside of the fork blades each side to prevent the
paint being worn off by the fender.

[RBW] WTT: Brooks Champion Flyer for B.17

2023-03-10 Thread Doug Van Cleve
Howdy folks.

I have a never mounted/ridden honey Champion Flyer that I *think* I bought
when Brooks was going out of business BITD. It has lived in my bike
room/den since then, never been on a bike or out of the house. I have a
use for a honey Brooks, but I suppose I would really rather have a B.17.
Anybody have a very clean, unmolested honey B.17 that you wish had
springs? For that matter, I also have plain black B.17 that has certainly
not been ridden much, maybe only around the block. I would also trade it
for one in honey...

Thanks, Doug

[RBW] Gus is complete!

2023-03-10 Thread Richard Rose
Well, almost, Still need to trim / cap the cables along with some fine
tuning. But, my first ever build is rolling! Shifting the 2 x 7 drivetrain
is very smooth & accurate. Brakes are squeal free and solid if a bit soft
at the lever. Touch points feel spot on as they should, having been
duplicated from my Clem. This promises to be epic fun once the trails dry
out.
For those interested, this has been an interesting process. Frame was
acquired from C&L Cycles in Montreal in a very smooth transaction. Awesome
Cliffhanger build & tires came from a Group member here. My first dynamo. A
bunch of parts came from Riv, Will was a big help. Stem & spacers from Blue
lug - they are amazing! B17 was a gift. The silver Deore rear deraillieur &
Black Deore brakes came from e bay. Paul levers from Northwest Bike.
Simworks cables... In short, it takes a village!
It snowed overnight here in Toledo, Ohio. It was a good day to work on the
bike and take it for a spin up & down the cleared just in time road. This
was a lot of fun & I learned a lot. A few pis
here; https://photos.app.goo.gl/C7VAntDBoDHCZDcf8

[RBW] Lovely mid-day ride

2023-03-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Ride started at noon and about 62*F, North via ditch roads and paved back
rods to Rio Grande bike path, then back South to major E/W boulevard,
whence East to my brother's house -- who had finally just finished
end-of-term grading, thence via urban parking lots and ditchbank trails
(fortunately firm at this time of incipient Spring) to 4th Street and
double back to a little coffee shops for coffee, vegan (Great Lent) oatmeal
cookies and good black coffee; return; stopping at Sprout's for 3X 1/2 gal
Oatley extra fat and various other fundamentals. ~19.5 miles on the
Matthews AM hub Riv clone, loving the middle/2nd/direct 65" gear against
headwinds and on dirt (75"/65"/56").

Only about 6 miles on dirt but great fun on all surfaces. The 42 mm Naches
Passes at ~ 30-35 psi are just about fat and soft enough for roughish but
firmish dirt (and excellent on pavement) tho' 48s or 50s at 23-25 psi would
be better.

Next up: just bought 650B X 1.5"-to-2" tubes since 26 X 1.8 not available
at LBS, to try to put in new pair of 26X1.8" Naches Pass extra lights to
try on the 1999 Joe Starck gofast fixie, with the SA TF hub. 52 X 18 direct
for ~72" with 75% drop for 54" on firmer ditchbank paths. A Riv 2 speed
fixed gear gravel bike. Hope to do this tomorrow and ride to church Sunday
along ditchbanks; will photo and report.

Waiting for 3-speed quadrant shifter for the closer ratio TC hub due 3d
week in March.

Re: [RBW] Re: Downtube bosses predicament

2023-03-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I did something similar with my 2020 Matthews: overtorqued a dry screw
holding a front lowrider to the fork leg boss, and snapping the head off,
leaving <1/8" of the shaft protruding. It was just barely enough to grab
securely with needle-nose vise grips and with liberal applications of spray
lubricant, patience, prayer, and 30 minutes of tiny back-and-forth rotation
I got it out without damage to anything.

[RBW] Re: Downtube bosses predicament

2023-03-10 Thread lconley
Use some penetrating oil on the threads (PB Blaster, etc.). Get some left
handed drill bits and drill larger holes, preferably in the center of the
sheared off bolt. It may be that the left handed drill bit will grab and
extract the sheared off bolt all by itself. If not, the more of the sheared
off bolt that you can remove with the drill, the better (the more centered
you are, the more of the sheared off bolt you can remove) as it weakens the
bolt. You may be able to use Dremel tool and to created a more centered
starter hole before you start drilling. Stop short of removing any of the
threads in the boss itself. Last resort is to use an EZ-out that is
basically a left hand threaded hardened tapered tap that is designed to
grab the sheared off bolt. The bigger the hole, the bigger of an EZ-out
that you can use (bigger = stronger). DO NOT snap the EZ-out off in the
sheared off bolt - err on the side of caution here, the EZ-out is very
tough steel and hard to drill through.
Not for the faint-of-heart, but you can also cut a slot through the threads
of the boss and bolt on one of the flats of the boss. This will weaken the
boss's grip on the bolt. if this works, you can repair with JB Weld, a tap,
and a file.
Heat is another option, but I assume you like your paint.

If all else fails - -> Single Speed!

[RBW] Mapping the Rivendell World

2023-03-10 Thread John Rinker
After seeing a few posts where others are wondering who rides a Riv nearby,
I got to wondering about the possibility of creating some sort of a map
whereby Riv riders could drop a pin near the city or town in which we
mostly ride. Of course, dropping a pin on one's home address may not be
what people want, but doing so in a public location (city post office)
might not be so bad.

Perhaps there's already such a thing of which I'm unaware, but if not, can
anyone see any problems with this idea that I've missed in my enthusiasm?

If anyone is familiar with the bike touring/hosting community,
Warmshowers.org, this is kind of what I have in mind.

Anyways, just a thought.

Incidentally, any riders in the Mesa, AZ area?

Ryan,

If you have a (very) small rotatory tool/dremel you can cut a slot in there
and then use a flat head screw driver to back the bolt out. If its not
quite *completely* flush you can try grabbing it with some vice grips too.

Good luck! If you cut a little bit of a slot into the boss itself that's

Thanks for the story about the John Wayne trail. Your daughter will
preserve those memories even if she isn't riding a bike now. Good for you!

I've often thought about riding that trail and now I'm going to look into
it! It will be especially fun if I can talk a couple of friends into going
so we can leave cars at each end to avoid the uphill return. I think I'll
be more persuasive if I focus on the downhill aspect! '

Have a good time with your buddies and I hope you'll give us a ride report
with photos. Are you camping at Lake Easton SP or just doing the
round-trip in one day? Regardless of the plan, your Clem will shine.

Re: [RBW] Re: Widest fenders that easily fit a Joe Appa?

2023-03-10 Thread Mr. Ray
Doug, the "long" is 13 cm longer at the front of the fender for ALL sizes.
To keep the front of the fender from rattling and perhaps cracking
prematurely over time, you can purchase an extra set of fender stays to
secure the extended front to a fork stay (i.e. midpoint of fork). I'm
using a front rack so the longer front of the fender is attached to the
rack platform using a fender clip. Fender coverage is personal so you'll
have to decide what length works for you.

That said, the Berthoud 650B x 60mm have very good coverage and are
designed with no front mudflap necessary (think classic French 650B
Randonneur). Both front and back fender are slightly longer in length
compared with Honjo or V.O. fenders in the 650B x 60mm size. If you don't
care for such excellent coverage, you can also use the Berthoud 26" x 60mm
and re-size them to fit 650B. The 26" x 60mm are readily available in the
USA (i.e. Peter White and Bens Cycle). I have never seen the Berthoud 650B
x 60mm sold anywhere in the USA which is why I purchased direct from
France.

 Hello Folks,

I am thinking of pairing Paul's Love Levers with Shimano Deore XT
BR-M750 Direct Pull V Brakes. My LBS thinks it;s a bad idea, and that I
should with the Canti Lever. Does anyone have experience with the BR-M750
 Paul lever pairing?

 Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Taking it to 2

2023-03-10 Thread Will Boericke
I've taken to using ATF in AWs as well as in my Nexus 8. I've been using
0W20 for years because I have two cars that take that.

I just disassembled an AW and lost one of those minuscule pawl springs in
the process. Grrr. Had to scavenge the innards from another.

Re: [RBW] Re: PONCHOS!!!

2023-03-10 Thread Justin Kennedy (Brooklyn, NY)
I'll give a mildly enthusiastic recommendation for the Blue Lug/Fairweather
poncho. I use it anytime I need to ride in the rain and it does a pretty
good job. It's not great for windy rain conditions, but I doubt any poncho
would be. Someone above mentioned they're low vis colors, which is true,
but you can spruce it up with some reflective material/tape without doing
damage to the waterproof fabric.

I have the Grundens poncho and fishing hat. I looked on the Grundens
website and could not find the poncho, but they still have the hat. I also
have the MUSA splats. I was ready to order the gaiters, but they never
reappeared on the Rive website (this was a few years ago).
The poncho works great on the bicycle (with fenders) - I love the thumb
loops and visibility of the yellow. I have also worn the poncho and hat at
an outdoor rain or shine concert sitting in a big folding chair - the
poncho was big enough to keep the chair dry as well.
