[RBW] Re: Double 1x

2023-04-29 Thread Joe Bernard
That may be the next move but I suspect it's a spindle length issue. This
FD was designed to run with an MTB double with a wide Q and 10-spd
chainrings closer together, it's not quite snapping over hard enough to the
small ring before running out of travel (limit screw all the way out). I
don't want to put in a longer bottom bracket so I may need to pick up an
older FD like Riv used to put on most of their bikes.*

*This is the part of the story where I remember why I gave up front
derailers.

Looks like you can lower the new derailleur a tad. Have you tried that and

[RBW] Re: New Riv Sister

2023-04-29 Thread Doug H.
Welcome Lacy. If, like me, you have enjoyed cycling most of your life then
that first ride on a Rivendell can be mind-blowing. I had no clue that a
bicycle could be so comfortable, functional and fun to ride!

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighter than your Platypus

2023-04-29 Thread Joe Bernard
Ok I'll cut to the chase: What is the point of the threads? They seem to be
a shot at the Platypus on a Riv forum in favor of two non-Rivs, and frankly
they seem directed at a particular person. I've done my best to remain
unserious about the whole affair but I'm kinda stumped on what the purpose
of this was.

Re: [RBW] Re: Lighter than your Platypus

2023-04-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Just for the record -- as the one who started all this nonsense -- I don't
fret about weight, well, with one exception, below; and I weighed the
Matthews only on a momentary impulse of curiosity; the Monocog followed as
a kind of academic investigation.

In fact, I fret mildly about weight only for one bike, and that is the 1999
Joe Starck Gofast Fixie Custom Road; and even on that one I chose most
parts for performance or looks instead of weight -- Dura Ace SPDs instead
of Look KEOS or Speedplay X-1s, Phil hubs, DA GA 200 crank with 52 ring,
Surly Dingle. The only chi chi light part is (I blush to admit) a titanium
stem bolt. 18 lb even. The SA TF hubs adds 11 oz and the TC much more
again, an amount I've not bothered to register.

All my other bikes were built without regard for weight and range from the
28 lb Matthews #2, clone of 2003 Curt Riv Road custom with SA AM hub, to
the 32 lb Matthews #1 and the Monocog at 32.25 -- all of these weighed with
full kit bags of 2 or 3 lb each.

[RBW] Re: Lighter than your Platypus

2023-04-29 Thread Julian Westerhout
Leah,

That video was great! I laughed, and cheered!:)

I'm 6'7" tall and weigh between 230 and 260 pounds (depending upon the
season) and am both amused and annoyed at the "how much does that bike
weigh?" and "How can you ride such a heavy bike?" comments I get when I
show up for a club ride on one of my Rivs or other steel bikes (I own no
carbon). My response is "Who cares? With me on it your carbon bike might
weigh 1 to 2% less than me on my bike -- and since this is a B-C club
(14-16 mph) ride and not the Tour de France it makes no appreciable
difference to my riding results, but to me the comfort of my bike is well
worth a possible few seconds over 50 miles." If it is someone I don't
know I then make an effort to cruise by on an uphill while trying to look
like I'm extending little effort.

I also get all the style points. Rode Ragbrai last year with a good friend
-- he rides carbon -- and every day lots of folks complimented my Atlantis,
many wanting photos. On the last day he remarked that no one ever said
anything about his bike, unlike me and the others on nice steel bikes
scattered among the thousands of lookalike carbon bikes.

I say, "Just Ride!"

2023-04-29 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
It’s about to get sillier. I made a video in response to Patrick’s thread.
I’m attaching it as a link here, since it’s too big to include in the text.
I changed my Instagram to public for this, but I’ll switch it back to
private soon, so watch it before I do!

I’m on a roll over there with taking classic, classy Rivendells and putting
them to tacky hit music. 5 years ago you long-time Riv fans would have
thrown me out of here, but I think I’ve worn you down enough that you will
find this palatable. Or not!

"My bike is lighter than a bike that's heavier than my bike but heavier
than a bike that's lighter than my bike. True story. "

Now Joe, that's just silly. Come to think of it, this whole thread is just
silly - which is probably why I keep following it ; )

understood it at least. Even still, you see riders ride in every

How wonderful! What is our new RivSister’s name? I’m so happy to hear that
she is loving her Platypus, and I do hope you’ll tell us more as she gets
to know it. Thanks for the introduction!

Re: [RBW] WTB 650b conversion parts for Riv Road Standard

2023-04-29 Thread EGNolan
And in regards to the 1up w/ a fendered bike; this was my only attempt thus
far and no issue on the 2.5 hr trip home via the interstate. I've seen
others use a pool noodle on the contact point around the rack's "arm" which
seems to add cushion yet keep the contact point tight enough to trust it.
It's a simple mechanism in the rack, but one I've come to trust.

Re: [RBW] WTB 650b conversion parts for Riv Road Standard

2023-04-29 Thread EGNolan
Eric Marth asked about tubing; This one was built with Reynolds 725. Not
sure if stays/blades are the same, but that's what I was told.

Jim- It's definitely tighter at the stays than the fork, but 42's fit the
fork easily and in the rear with sufficient clearance if the wheel is at
the back of the dropouts. The fenders have plenty of room as well so I'm
pretty excited.

Thanks for all who've reached out, I think I have a line on the
brakes/wheels, but will respond directly to those who've messaged me. I'll
post updates once complete.

 Hi friends!

Hoping this bike finds a great home with one of you! Forgive me I get a
little attached to my bikes haha and I have a soft spot for this one.

This is a 52cm Clem H, the model that has the curved seat stays which I
think look very nice. It hasn’t been a trail bike, I just ride it casually
on the paved bike trails around Columbus, OH, so it is in very good
condition. The bike paths in Columbus are great by the way if you’re ever
 up this way.

I’m starting off offering this as a pickup or meetup preferred. I am in
Columbus OH, Charleston WV, Asheville NC and all points in between quite
frequently so hoping that works for someone.

Pedals, bottle cage, and saddle not included.
