I'm using a $15 Shimano 7speed trigger from eBay with my Jim 13-42 7speed
and it's working great.

If friction isn't your thing but you like the idea of those 7-speed Jim
cassettes, S Ride makes a cheap and functional trigger shifter for it.
 Save
weight and money with a plastic shifter!

So what's the lowdown on S-Ride? Are they the manufacturer of the new Riv
7s cassettes? And how does their stuff compare to other budget drivetrain
options like SunRace & Microshift?

[RBW] Re: Clickers for Jim cassettes

2023-05-02 Thread Justin Kennedy
>From https://www.rivbike.com/products/cassettes-7 :

*Jim 7 speed cassettes, made by former SRAM people in China*

Backstory Stuff: On getting these from China; and indexing with these

When SRAM took its manufacturing from China to Taiwan, probably but who are
we to say, to avoid the raised tariffs, it left a colony of Chinese
designers, engineers, marketers, and assembly people out of work but still
chock full of skills and rarin' to go again. Out of the original batch came
at least three new brands: MicroNew, S-Ride, and Sensah, each with its own
areas of specialization. For 27 years we sold nothing made in China. COVID
has made it impossible to source only from Japan or Taiwan while continue
equipping bicycles on time and with the kind of stuff we like. We have
nurtured what seems to be a good relationship with some Chinese vendors,
and guess what--if they can make Apple products, they can make bike parts.
Equally, they're eager to do so, at a time when most Taiwan vendor will
laugh your pants off and tell you to leave the room if you want something
new, even if it's right up their alley, and furthermore, if you want it
within three years. These 7-speed cassettes are made by S-Ride.

INDEXING

We're not an R&D lab, but we dissect things and learn about them deeply,
from a bike rider's and bike mechanic's perspective, and purely as a matter
of curiosity, Vince and Rich here combines brains and discovered how to
make 9-speed indexed shifters work seemingly perfectly with these 7s
cassettes. The following instructions are intended for those with
mechanical skills and sufficient experience with fussy indexed drivetrains.

Here's all you do, baby: Put the chain in top gear (big front, small rear),
with the big paddle fresh and the cable loose. Click twice, essentially
wasting the first two clicks. THEN tighten and snug the cable, The next
seven clicks seem to shift perfectly. Your results may vary, but it worked
great here. We still recommend these for friction shifting...or if you
happen to have some dusty, cruddy, eBay'd 7s indexed shifters, try them.

Re: [RBW] Double 1x

2023-05-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Years ago, probably close to 40 years ago now, a book came out describing
the adventures of 2 British brothers' around the world bike tour on custom
touring bikes. For some reason they forewent front derailleurs on their 2X
drivetrains and instead carried little sticks on their handlebars which
they used to shove the chain onto the small cog (forget how they
upshifted). Does anyone recall their names or the title of the book?

Me, I had a front-derailleurless 2X8 or 2X9 drivetrain on my early '80s Ken
Rogers tricycle; it was great fun to stop dead on a hill and backpedal with
my left foot while nudging the bottom of the chain with the toe of my
right, then continuing on in a low gear. I did have to reach down and grab
the top run of the chain to upshift, a rather dicey move.

Re: [RBW] Double 1x

2023-05-02 Thread lconley
That was what came on the Rivendell Mystery Bikes, double crank on the
front, 9 speed cassette on the rear, but only a rear derailleur and
shifter. No shifter boss or cable stop for a front derailleur. I think it
was referred to as a stick shift - you shifted the front by pushing the
chain with a stick.

I love the idea of stick/kick shift in theory but - not unlike my dreams
that I can ride a singlespeed around here - it's just not feasible in
practice. My terrain is up/down/up/down all day, I gotta have those gears
and they gotta be available at the flick of a lever. This place is a
rollercoaster!

[RBW] Re: Bike route mapping & guidance app for iPhone

2023-05-02 Thread Patrick Moore
Well, I haven't yet bothered to figure out what my Apple ID password is, so
I bypassed MMR and wrote out an informal route sheet (with a fountain pen)
using Google Maps. Google Maps shows detail in far higher resolution than
MMR, which is too bad for MMR. The distance from my house to the computer
store is 3.5 south miles by car but along a 6-lane (Coors Boulevard)
fronting big residential developments and shopping centers. My proposed
route included a dirt path that GM and MMR showed as bridging surface
streets between 2 of the residential developments.

What the maps don't tell you until you actually ride up to them and then go
back and look closely is the fences: 3 of the 5 neighborhoods between mine
(not gated) and the shopping center on the east side of the big boulevard
are fenced and gated. I did managed to get onto the mapped dirt path after
trespassing into one of these neighborhoods, but the south end is closed
with a 5' metal fence and locked gate with "video surveillance" sign. I was
tempted to climb over the gate -- have done that before with bike -- but
didn't want to deal with video surveillance.

So I doubled back and went further east to try another and well known dirt
path south; this one dead ends at a housing development but you can ride
and climb up a huge concrete stormwater culvert; I noted the appropriate
place along the wall so i could check it out later on Google Maps.

Back home I checked GMaps for un-fenced dirt routes for the last mile or so
south of the storm culvert; nope, all hemmed in by fences.

Thus there is no way to ride south from my house for ~3 miles to get to
this shopping center without riding on a 6-lane boulevard. What a stupid
way to live.

[RBW] Re: Seeking Velocity Synergy Rim

2023-05-02 Thread Michael Hechmer
Thanks to all who offered help with replacing my Synergy rear rim. I have
a deal for a replacement.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-05-02 Thread 'Bikie#4646' via RBW Owners Bunch
Eric,
I seem to recall being attracted to the "Butterscotch" Saluki (?) way back
when. Though I'm not sure I ever saw one in the wild. I do like the
metallics being used now, at least what I see online. Like the new light
metallic yellow on the Homer (or Sam's?). Hard to keep up.
I must say though, when it came time to purchase a new Sam for a dedicated
touring bike back in 2015 or so, i opted for Black & Cream like yours. I
knew how a touring bike could take a beating. And despite being a fine
artist who has a huge stash of model car paints to mix almost exact colors,
given enough time, I have never been stumped worse than trying to touch up
my first early model metallic orange Sam. I think it was a two-stage paint
(transparent orange over metallic gold?). That proved impossible for me to
match to my liking.
