If you use the strava app instead of the workout app, it'll let you
attribute miles to the appropriate bike. No need for a cyclometer. You can
even link Strava to Pro Bike Garage(https://www.probikegarage.com/) and get
maintenance reminders.

I have that same stand. I love it. It is so easy to get different bikes up
where you want them to be. And is so easy to fold up and store. Yes, if
you leave it set up, the footprint can be a tripping hazard.

Re: [RBW] Re: 3-speeding Quickbeams and SimpleOnes

2023-06-18 Thread Jim M.
My QB came with a double chainring and flip flop hub, so that was far
easier for multi-speeding than a new S-A hub and wheel would have been. And
I know it's only about a pound difference between an AW and a Shimano
flip-flop hub, but I'm weenie enough not to want that extra weight. But if
I had an AW wheel, I certainly would have tried it.

has (per late '90s study by the Human Powered Vehicle Association) as
little drag as a clean, well set up derailleur system, and an IGH
 preserves
the simplicity and clean aesthetic of a ss or fixed gear, barring a small
 cable and shift mechanism.

Pray, why the choice of multiple rings, fd, and rear tensioner? Is it
the big jumps in the AW gearing?

Long ago (1990 IIRC) I set up a beater Schwinn 3 speed as a poor man's
mountain bike (my companion's Diamond Back was recent with only 6 rear
cogs) with a 36 to ring to give, with the 18 t AW cog, 69", 52", and 39"
gears, and it did good service on 1 well-remembered ride on very hilly
 jeep
tracks -- and an aside: the Ashtabula crank was a miracle of cheap and
durable manufacturing compared to the cottered system.

But 69"-52"-39" is a very useful gear spread.

[RBW] WTB: 54cm Roadini in Mermaid

2023-06-18 Thread Jeff Peel
Looking for a 54cm Roadini frameset in Mermaid green. If you’ve got one
complete you’re looking to unload (I already connected with Ahmed) feel
free to reach out, though I really am just looking for the frameset.

[RBW] New member confession.

2023-06-18 Thread David Linden
My primary reason for requesting membership to this group is that I must
begin selling all six of my bikes and related bicycle gear. Let me explain,
please.
I was a member of the original Bridgestone Owner's Group, I think #912
???. I joined the RBW group early on, but eventually dropped active
participation because I could not keep up with the number of e-mails
involved.

I am now a retired, 87 year old, VA physician, living in north central
Arizona. I primarily was a road rider, (non racer, ) with some off road
riding in the national forest which lies out my front door. I stopped
riding outdoors when we were shut down by the Covid pandemic.
I could not risk an injury requiring a hospital ER visit or
hospitalization, and leaving my wife to fend for herself. Thus, I have only
been riding indoors on my Revmaster Pro stationary bike.
I have more recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, am on
medication,, but am plagued with extreme fatigue, which limits my rides to
about 30 minutes. PD is a progressive, incurable disease, thus my cycling
situation is not likely to change .
Therefore, I an going to try to sell my bikes and miscellaneous gear and
equipment.

[RBW] SunTour Shifter, plastic washer falling apart.

2023-06-18 Thread getjosh...@gmail.com
I've got SunTour bar end shifters on my Atlantis and one of the plastic
washers is falling apart. It's mostly gone at this point and there is a
fair bit of play in that shifter. Two questions for the group.
1. can this be replaced?
2. would this brass dome washer from Riv
https://www.rivbike.com/products/brass-dome-washer?variant=41087107530863
do the trick, or can those only be used on the silver product. I know that
the silver shifters are nearly a copy of the Shimano pod and SunTour
shifter.

Re: [RBW] Re: 3-speeding Quickbeams and SimpleOnes

2023-06-18 Thread Jamie Hascall
I did like my little White Industries Dos ENO freewheel when I was
commuting in Santa Fe. Bigger cog for uphill going to work, and little one
for a fast ride home. I just ran across it in a box of parts and may need
to find a home for it. Couldn't change while moving but it worked for me at
that time.

Re: [RBW] 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-06-18 Thread Leah Peterson
Guys, here’s an interesting thing. I am still getting used to my new IRD seat post and figuring out where I want it. (I’ve been traveling, and I’ve been using my other bikes for things so the Racing Platypus hasn’t gotten all the usual miles.) Tonight, I moved the saddle to 40mm, so let’s see if that’s the sweet spot. But that’s not interesting. What IS interesting is that the bolt on the seat post must not be magnetic. I have Hexlox, a funny little thief-blocker that stops anyone from taking a hex key to my saddle or seat post. But the Hexlox keeps falling out and luckily, sticking to my frame, where I find it later. So, I will have to see if there is an identical bolt except magnetic, lest my ivory Rivet be at risk.LeahOn Jun 18, 2023, at 8:00 AM, Kim Hetzel wrote:Leah,I am unable to the IRD "Wayback" seat post in my Clem Smith Jr. "L" bicycle, because the construction of the post widens too much at the top of the post underneath the length of the adjustment rail, unlike the SR MTE-100 seat post. Very good point, and one I had not considered. Yes, much easier to add
rings and fd and tensioner than an IGH, and even simpler than adding 3 rear
cogs since that would in most cases also require a wheel build (unless you
find a rare 3-speed freewheel and respace and redish your rear wheel.

As far as I'm concerned these are the best tandems available today, or
any day for that matter, glad to hear you enjoy yours so much.

I was really hopeful someone would grab it before the weekend, but that

[RBW] 3-speeding Quickbeams and SimpleOnes

2023-06-18 Thread Patrick Moore
There have been threads recently about 2- and 3-speeding Quickbeams and
SimpleOnes using multiple chainrings, front derailleur, and rear chain
takeup device. I'm curious why people don't use Sturmey Archer AWs? The AW
has (per late '90s study by the Human Powered Vehicle Association) as
little drag as a clean, well set up derailleur system, and an IGH preserves
the simplicity and clean aesthetic of a ss or fixed gear, barring a small
cable and shift mechanism.

Pray, why the choice of multiple rings, fd, and rear tensioner? Is it the
big jumps in the AW gearing?

Long ago (1990 IIRC) I set up a beater Schwinn 3 speed as a poor man's
mountain bike (my companion's Diamond Back was recent with only 6 rear
cogs) with a 36 to ring to give, with the 18 t AW cog, 69", 52", and 39"
gears, and it did good service on 1 well-remembered ride on very hilly jeep
tracks -- and an aside: the Ashtabula crank was a miracle of cheap and
durable manufacturing compared to the cottered system.

But 69"-52"-39" is a very useful gear spread.

I am on the fence about switching from ultralight Big Ones to these, and I
guess that a discounted used price might tip me over on the "buy" side of
the fence.

Note that I want the ultralight 370-gram (claimed) model, to set up
tubeless.

If you have a VG pair to sell, or perhap to trade for a pair of ultra light
(450 honest digital grams) Big Ones or a pair of ultra light Elk Passes or
other things, please get in touch.

The reason I'm on the fence is that the Big Ones work well both for
exceptionally good pavement rolling and for deepish sand float; but it
would be nice to have a tire that let's the bike handle a bit more
"crisply."

Thanks, Patrick

Background in case anyone cares: The Spec Hover drop bar on the Monocog
makes the Monocog so much more pleasant to ride (even tho' I thought that
the severely trimmed MAP/Ahearne bar was comfortable) that I now choose it
for more of my bosque/ditchbank/sandy soil rides.

2023-06-18 Thread iamkeith

I don't have an M18 (i actually need one too), but I have this SOMA rack
that I recently prchased in its stead, but didn't work. If you're
interested and think it could work for your application, I'll give it to
for you a bargain;

https://www.somafab.com/archives/product/soma-champs-elysees-mini-front-rack

In my case, it didn't work because it interfered with my Paul Racer
centerpull brakes. It sits slightly lower than the nitto racks due to the
shape of the diving board. I tried it with a nitto diving board that I
happened to have, but then the struts - which are fixed-angle - didn't end
up in the correct location. I'm kind of bummed, because it would be much
more sturdy than the nitto. The fixed struts and thicker diving board are
improvements if it fits. I'd be comfortable with a much bigger load than
on the M18

[RBW] Anyone using an Appaloosa as a mostly-road bike?

2023-06-18 Thread reynoldslugs
Hi all, can’t remember the last time I posted. Long-time Rivendell rider,
since 1998 or so; my current stable includes Atlantis, Legolas, Custom,
Rambouillet, Heron Road, maybe one or two others (I gave my Quickbeam to a
friend when my knees got to creaky for fixed gear riding).

My current curiosity/notion/interest is whether I should add an Appaloosa
to the flock. If any of you ride one as a mostly-road, perhaps drop-bar
bike, I would be grateful for your impressions, feedback.

I do a fair amount of road + steep gravel rides - - if you are familiar
with Sonoma County, that means Coleman Valley + Willow Creek, and Sonoma
Mountain Road + Bald Mountain. I’m interested in a bike that does well on
pavement and rides well on steep, rutted, dirt and gravel roads.

Grateful for any opinions and feedback, thanks.

Re: [RBW] Re: 26.8 seatposts with generous setback

2023-06-18 Thread Brian Turner
My experience with Brooks leather saddles is they have rather short rails which limit you in your setback. Cambiums have a bit more rail length, and so do Berthoud saddles. I don’t really have any other saddle experience outside of the three I just mentioned. I’m almost completely switched over to Berthoud on all my bikes, with the exception of a few well-loved B17 specials. On Jun 18, 2023, at 7:50 AM, Kim Hetzel wrote:Johnny,I have a 27.2mm Sakae Ringyo MTE-100 with a shim on my Clem Smith Jr. "L" bicycle for reasons that I blame on my long torso and short limbs.
