[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Build Opinions

2023-07-06 Thread Eric Grim
Focusing on the question, what kinds of bars do people like on their
Appaloosas, I had Nitto *North Road* bars on mine for a while (now, my
Grant Petersen-designed Soma *San Marcos* is wearing them). I don't think
Nitto is making those bars anymore, but there are lots that are pretty
similar, including the Choco and Albastache. I like them a lot.

Presently my Appaloosa has Nitto VS touring/butterfly bars. I haven't
ridden with them much yet.

I took some pics but couldn't figure out how to paste them into this reply.

[RBW] Re: To trade or sell or improve, my 50cm 1988 Bridgestone MB-1

2023-07-06 Thread Jeffrey Arita
Lee,

I will share our experiences: we bought his/her 90's era Trek 930 ATBs
during the pandemic as project bikes. They both had close-to-level top
tubes, much like your MB-1. I ended up buying a pair of
threaded-to-threadless stem adapters and then installing shorter (and
upright) threadless stems to both raise and shorten the reach. Be advised
the specific Treks we had required a slightly larger diameter adapter vs.
the more common 22.2mm (quill) diameter. Measure your existing quill stem
and perhaps order the appropriate sized adapter. The adapters use the
almost standard 9/8" diameter size to attach threadless stems.

Good luck,

Jeff

[RBW] Re: Appaloosa Build Opinions

2023-07-06 Thread Dave Grossman
I once heard an interview with Jeff Jones on how to set up his H-Bar and he
mentioned using a stem short enough so that you can fully utilize his
bars. If the stem is too long, the curve at the front won't be used for
more "aero" riding and if it is too short the grips won't be comfy either.

I've tried to apply this to my Hunq and I ended up running a 120/Albas on
it! I suggest trying a few setups on the Joe until you feel like you can
utilize it in full.

The MB-1 was designed as an uncompromising racer so the geometry is
deliberately aggressive. Fantastic piece of equipment though with that
wonderful Tange Prestige frame. Yours looks to be mostly original with the
exception of the rims?

2023-07-06 Thread Tim Bantham
Ted, I've got to say that Ana Purple color is one of the nicest colors I've
seen on a Riv. Looks great! I'll offer my feedback as a former Appa owner.
I've tried Albatross, Billie's and Jones Loop bars. Of those three the
Billie's were my favorite. The Albatross didn't over enough hand positions.
The Jones bars are very practical and make for great touring bars but I
never could warm up to the aesthetics of the Jones. The Billie's are
classic Riv and they just go perfectly IMHO.

I sold my Appa in the fall of last year and have had quite a few regrets
about doing so. Oh well, maybe I'll try an Atlantis next time!

I would sell a bike whose geometry (or any other aspect) annoys me because
someone else may really love it. I finally got hold of a Susie and it feels
different from the Clem H that I sold but may be less so compared to a Clem
L. It is fun to speculate but not if it gets in the way of enjoying bikes
you love.

2023-07-06 Thread Nick Shoemaker
I was in a similar situation: I had a comparably spec'd Giant with bars
that were way too low for me to ride comfortably. I somewhat solved it by
adding a long/tall stem and Bosco bars, but soon after built up my own Clem
L. In short, the only thing MB-1 era bikes do better than a Clem is take up
less space (easier to fit in a car/garage/apartment/bike rack); even if you
manage to get the MB-1 to fit you *better*, it will still be no match for
the awesomeness of the Clem's long geometry & tire clearance. Bstones have
a huge following (with correspondingly silly market pricing), but I can't
imagine having any real use for one (beyond novelty) if you already have a
Clem you're happy with. Again, this is somewhat at odds with the Radavist-y
culture of objectifying old bikes for the sake of.something(?) Ride the
wheels off your Clem and want for nothing!

2023-07-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
The latest update they published was in February. saying they'd ship put of
Taiwan in August/September. That same email update said there would be a
lugged Susie shipping in June and Platypus in July. The Susie's don't seem
to be here yet, so maybe push everything back a little. October?
