Re: [RBW] Re: Nice brake bits: Shovel Research

2023-07-21 Thread Brian Turner
The Shovel Research stuff is incredibly well made and designed. It should be noted however, the light mount clamp itself is made to clamp onto the 3/8” struts of the Rod Steward bag support only. It won’t work with the 7mm dia. Nitto struts or other 8mm struts from other rack manufacturers. On Jul 20, 2023, at 9:27 PM, Sam McDermott wrote:Just learned about Shovel Research on account of their dynamo light mount https://shovelresearch.com/light-mountExcellent, simple design that, once you see it, is shocking you haven't seen before.-SamOn Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 6:02:13 PM UTC-4 maxcr wrote:Just pulled this out of the box from Shovel Research and had to share - I love the care and level of detail Sal has put into designing, making and even packing & shipping each of the parts.I won't have time to install them anytime soon, but I love my Rod Steward and I imagine these will perform and look similarly.Get yours here while they are in stock: https://shovelresearch.com/fork-mounted-brake-cable-hangerMax

2023-07-21 Thread Leah Peterson
This story takes the cake. You’ve set us up perfectly, Danielle, with the hearts coming out of your eyes for the orange demo Cheviot and your eagerness at its impending arrival… As much as you wanted it, we wanted you to have it!Oh, but who could have guessed the part your hero would play… I gasped. I laughed. I…am so sorry. I am excited for you to have another New Bike Day without all the trauma. Please let us know if you get that Sergio Green Roadini. And, if you’d indulge me, I am curious about how it’s going with the Cheviot and what you’ll be using each bike for. I love to hear people’s Riv stories! Thanks for writing this; I so thoroughly enjoyed your storytelling.LeahOn Jul 21, 2023, at 1:51 AM, danielle da cruz wrote:This story hit me in the worst way. Six years ago for a milestone birthday I decided to purchase a beautiful orange Cheviot from Riv. I'd jumped on one that was too large for me that our local bike shop had on display and from that moment on could think of nothing else. I felt like a bird taking flight on that bike, so we placed the order for my size and waited for delivery. I got notice when it arrived and raced home to find that my ever-helpful partner had opened the box and was already assembling it (you know where this is going)... On our concrete walkway. With the frame laying on the bare ground, scratching along as he moved it. Taking a bite out of "v" in the Cheviot. Instant decal damage on day one. Scratched down to the steel. I feel sick to my stomach even thinking about it again. And so from moment one it was no longer pristine. Very special of course, but not entirely precious and future scrapes have gone down easier. Now I have my finger on the button again, ready for a Sergio Green Roadini this Thursday. I plan to take D(elivery) Day off from work and be sure my man with a plan is out of the house :) On Thursday, June 15, 2023 at 6:15:59 PM UTC-4 Mojo wrote:In the winter of 2011, I bought a Mark-Nobilette-built Legolas. It was serious overlap with my 2001 custom Riv Road and 2005 Quickbeam. I justified it as my mixed-surface, foul-weather, fine-riding bike. I built it up during that winter with pleasing-to-me parts including a Ritchey Logic crank and a Shimergo drive train (Campy 11-spd Chorus brifters mated to Shimano 9 speed XT derailers (12-36 to 34/46 gearing)). My very first ride, I took it out to the nearby irrigation ditch to snap a photo with some mountains in the background. I leaned it up against a concrete irrigation valve and before I could snap a pic my sparkling new Legolas slid down the edge of the concrete and into the ditch. The top tube scratches were horrible. But those scratches freed me and the Legolas. I've ridden it plenty on paved roads in nice weather, but also without hesitation in gravel, snow, mud mixed with cow scat, thunderstorms with small hail. Big scratches for vanity instead of adventure was quite upsetting, but it has worked out for me and this fine bike. Joe in GJT CO

 Hi all,

I have really fallen for these luscious new Roadini builds I've seen at
 Riv and Blue Lug.

I have a Sam Hillborne and love it. It's been through several
iterations of cockpit/racks/bags/brakes/wheels/tires and all have been
really fun. Right now it has flat bars with sweep, chunky 47mm tires, and
is an excellent all around adventure/trail/camping ride. It's currently my
 only bike!

Before the Sam, I rode 90s road bikes exclusively for 20 years, and
those worked great for city/commuting/neighborhood/pub rides. I've heard
that the Roadini does NOT offer that kind of
ride/speed/feel/handling/gusto/whatever, from several folks in this group.

So am I fooling myself into thinking another $2500 Riv build is going
to scratch the itch? Or should I buy a <$500 Japanese Road Bike that can
hold 33s and actually feel some performance?

[RBW] Early 80's Specialized Sequoia

2023-07-21 Thread Ted Durant
There have been a couple of mentions of early 80's Sequoias in the Roadini
thread. I had one that replaced my crashed Fuji America. I believe Bike
Nashbar was blowing them out. It was a noticeably heavy bike, but
absolutely wonderful to ride and very pretty. Alas, it was stolen out of my
West Philadelphia apartment. If anyone has or sees on available in my size
(I think 54 or 56?), please let me know! I'll send a RONA t-shirt as a
finder's fee :-)

Wow, an '81 Sequoia! Those are very rare since only about 700 were made by

[RBW] Re: Cargo/Kid bike recommendations (or bikefriday vs. tern)

2023-07-21 Thread Hoch in ut
Honestly, cargo bikes are nice but they’re pretty spendy and take up a lot
of space.

I sold my cargo/kid specific bikes and got a trailer. Chariot is excellent.
Kids are safe, surrounded by a cage. Also weatherproof weather rain, sun,
cold, etc. Best part is you can hook it up to your favorite bike. Very
versatile and cost-effective solution.

[RBW] Re: Cargo/Kid bike recommendations (or bikefriday vs. tern)

2023-07-21 Thread Piaw Na
My personal solution was to get a tandem (really, a triplet/quad that
converts). The kids love it, and we just rolled over 13k miles on it since
getting it 8 years ago. Other parents will tell me that my kids are
special, and that their kids couldn't stay on a bike that long. I would
take their kids on the tandem and it turns out that their kids had no
problem biking for as long as mine. It's just that most parents don't want
to do the work. Yes, it's expensive (though not that expensive if you buy
used), but in exchange you get kids that would rather go on a bike tour
than disneyland.

[RBW] Re: Cargo/Kid bike recommendations (or bikefriday vs. tern)

2023-07-21 Thread Drw
I guess I should've mentioned that space is a real issue, and the child is
5 years old. Ideally the cargo bike would have the same footprint as the
rivendell it would be replacing. Also our riding is almost entirely urban,
much of it without bike lanes, so I worry about the trailer option. I have
no evidence, but pulling it through traffic makes me nervous.

[RBW] Seat angle

2023-07-21 Thread Rich Powers
I was watching the Asheville video- looks like a great event. I’m sure we
could lure 10’s to the DesMoines metro some weekend for a ride. :-) Corn
and beans are a pretty sight you know….

Anyhow- my mind wondered to the range (one?) of nose up brooks saddles in
pictures. What am I not understanding? No judgement. Could I make that
work? When working with friends that are new riders- they seem to want to
have a too high of a saddle height and tilt it down.

Comments or feedback from those that nose up works for?

Killing time as a passenger traveling to a Shriner’s event.

thanks for posting this warning, would be good for shovel research to add a
note on their site to because i feel like there is a pretty big overlap of
Nitto users that would be interested in this for this exact use case!

[RBW] Re: Seat angle

2023-07-21 Thread Mackenzy Albright
brooks saddles have a bit of a curvature due to the shape of the leather
and frame. In my experience, when you sit in a more upright position your
sit bones sit further back on on the wider area of the saddle. Due to the
hammock shape of the saddle you nose it up a touch to maintain a somewhat
flat seat position to avoid slipping forward.

not this way for everyone - there's variables like pelvic tilt, bike fit,
core strength, and general preference. But a lot of people using b17's on
relaxed bikes tend to nose up.

I fully submerged mine under water for over an hour accidentally. The
switch got kind of weird but it still worked for close to a year before the
switch mechanism stopped working entirely. I've been meaning to replace it
but were out of stock for a long time. I've since moved to a dynamo. I wish
Koma made a dynamo light...they look so nice.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cargo/Kid bike recommendations (or bikefriday vs. tern)

2023-07-21 Thread Edwin W
Max - love that Ritchey cargo bike. But dreamy pricey - take a cool old
$300 MTB and add a $350 fork and ask $2900 for it!
Hoch - I know some love a trailer, but I never liked having my kids that
far away and that low
Piaw - love those stories. I never had a tandem for my kids, but I agree -
you do the work, the kids like it!
Drew - I love both of those mini cargo bikes. Can't go wrong there!

We had, over the years:

   - a box bike : lots
of smiles from passers by, kids loved it (just ride and chill!), but I
never used it unless I had more than one kid. Takes up a lot of space
   - a yuba mundo: long, but super useful. Felt just like an old mountain
bike when empty. Looks like they are moving more towards electric.
   - A workcycles Fr8 :
this was the one that is most like a regular bike. Heavy as all hell, but
super comfy to ride. I got the seat that goes in front and the kids all
fought for that space until they were older than 10!

Best of luck. Let us know what you settle on,

Edwin

Y’all…if you’re simply careful and mindful and respectful, you can ride the
hell out your beautiful, even precious, Rivendell day-in / day-out for
years and years and keep it shiny and pristine like the day you first
pedaled it down the road.

It’s easy.

The older it gets, the better it sticks. Then you never want for more. Be

Tilting the nose up prevents sliding forward when you're riding upright

It feels the same as an English equestrian saddle, once you get the hang of

danielle - the Cheviot looks awesome and congrats on the Roadini purchase!
My two cents is that since the Cheviot is the longer of the two bikes, I
would transfer the Albatross to the Roadini (it's the most forward-reach of
the sweepy bars, excluding the Albastache) and put a Losco bar on the Chev
now that it's relieved of any spirited riding needs thanks to the new speed
steed! If that sounds t relaxed, then I'd go with keeping the Chev as
is and put an Albastache setup on the Roadini with a nice short stem. I am
living vicariously through you as I weigh these options!

I am not in the market for a Roadini but I love reading all these stories

I am about 200 miles into my orange-ass roadini and I love it. Set up
with a23s, dirt drops, cavas and an analog 30mm stem. It is not flexy and
light like my rb 2. It is no sports car. Its like a benz, smooth and
 comfy.
I have a 90 stumpjumper (that I’m convinced could be the worlds greatest
bicycle), and the roadini is v similar, minus canti post, add practical
geometry. It is definitely stout, which makes the lack of rack mounts
annoying, but its not t stout. To me, it feels like a road tourer, not
a zippy speed machine. I think a crust mallochio or lightning bolt might
 be
 lighter/flexier/zippier.

slid down the edge of the concrete and into the ditch. The top tube
scratches were horrible. But those scratches freed me and the Legolas.
 I've
ridden it plenty on paved roads in nice weather, but also without
hesitation in gravel, snow, mud mixed with cow scat, thunderstorms with
small hail. Big scratches for vanity instead of adventure was quite
upsetting, but it has worked out for me and this fine bike.

[RBW] Re: Downtube to Bar End conversion shimano 600

2023-07-21 Thread Thomas McCause
As the website states, - If you have Shimano dt shifters then you need to
get the Shimano shifter adapters

if you have the spacers, I could send you a set of Shimano pods for $25...
shipping in the cont. US.

you'll also need to grab a set of the downtube shifter stops

And then depending on your routing and the size of your frame, you might
also need an extra long derailleur cable

Hope this helps,

weight, but hes close enough to the 40 mark that i'm worried about it. have

unfortunately don't have real room or budget for a second bike, but will
also never say never to it, especially if him and i can continue moving

hoping for more ideas from others with similar experiences.

[RBW] Re: Thinking about Roadini

2023-07-21 Thread R Olson
Hey Scott,

Roadini's seem to be a hot topic these days. I own a 61cm Roadini, 91
PBH. The Roadini will most certainly be more comfortable. You can get the
bars super high and the chainstay is longer at 46 cm, and you can fit
large, comfy tires up to 43's. You're right in between the two larger
Roadini sizes, the 57 and the 61. The standover on the 61 is about 88cm,
so pretty close. Go to bike insights and compare the Roadini to the
Straggler and you'll see how much higher you can get the bars with the
Roadini:

https://bikeinsights.com/compare

Best of luck,

there are various routes that will allow you to explore the distance you

Both of these rides were accomplished on my Atlantis, a 2008 Toyo 61 CM
for those that want details. And yes, that’s a sign telling you not to
drive your horse and buggy on the trail.

The contact settings allow members of the group to contact another
member. Potentially, someone could join just to do so. That would mean
 that
they likely have not ever posted to the group, as their postings would be
moderated until they reach out to me directly.

If the person shows no history of activity in the group, I'd strongly
encourage you to confirm they are legitimate. You can easily search by

bird taking flight on that bike, so we placed the order for my size and
waited for delivery. I got notice when it arrived and raced home to find
that my ever-helpful partner had opened the box and was already assembling
it (you know where this is going)...

 On our concrete walkway.

With the frame laying on the bare ground, scratching along as he moved
 it.

Taking a bite out of "v" in the Cheviot.

Instant decal damage on day one.

 Scratched down to the steel.

I feel sick to my stomach even thinking about it again. And so from
moment one it was no longer pristine. Very special of course, but not
entirely precious and future scrapes have gone down easier. Now I have my
finger on the button again, ready for a Sergio Green Roadini this
 Thursday.
I plan to take D(elivery) Day off from work and be sure my man with a plan
is out of the house :)

It's long, but I love the surly big dummy or big fat dummy. They are just
great riding bikes, loaded or empty. I've had several and they are all
great bikes. It's long but not much longer than a clem (for some reason).
Great riding bikes and you won't even notice 100lbs or so on the tail.

[RBW] Re: Cargo/Kid bike recommendations (or bikefriday vs. tern)

2023-07-21 Thread Ed Carolipio
Given your parameters, I think the two bikes you identified are your best
bets. I have first hand experience with the Tern HSD, which is the
electrified version of the Short Haul, and it does everything it's
advertised to do. [One side comment: I never connected "emotionally" to any
Tern bike, lol, just pure transportation. I tolerate our Terns but if I had
a choice, I'd select a long wheelbase cro-mo cargo bike instead.]

+1 on going with a single seat trailer as an alternative. (Don't get the
two seater: they're impractically huge.) That's a good option given your
space limitations plus most Rivs can readily haul child trailers. The
Burley D'lite X is the best: spendy but super comfy for your child, easy to
sell once you're done with it. Lots of ways to not pay full price new, and
check your local Craigslist for parents who are done with theirs for used
options.

Good luck,
