[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-21 Thread aeroperf
I’m going to stick with the spacers going as shown in the exploded view -
spacers going between the cup and the BB shell.
You’re absolutely right on the prep work. Both bikes were chased, but the
Soma was not faced… probably why it gets by with the spacer stack slightly
smaller.

I mostly take the number of spacers they recommend and arrange them in
whjatever fashion creates the best chainline for the bike.

[RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-21 Thread Matt Beecher
If I were to do it again, I would pay for one of the services where they
haul your stuff and set up your tent. Getting a hotel will likely be
nearly impossible, given the number of people attending.

I did RAGBRAI a few years ago and tried bringing my own tent and setting it
up at night. The kids they use to haul luggage from site to site quickly
destroyed my bag. Basically, they pile them in the truck and if I had to
guess, they saw my handles and yanked on it to pull it free, but tore the
brand new heavy canvas bag instead. I tried holding it together with a
cable lock and tape, but had to give up on that after a few days. A lot of
items I didn't need were tossed, then the rest went into my panniers and I
had to haul it myself. Overall, I was a bit disappointed with the luggage
service side of the trip.

However, the ride itself was great, especially eating dinner with strangers
every evening.

One thing I was happy that I brought was my ultralight cot. It got me off
of the ground, which kept me dry on rainy evenings and cooler on hot days.

The next trick is to find a way to charge your phone. I'd make sure you
have a power bank available.

Good luck,
Matt

[RBW] Favorite Bay Area S24Os?

2024-01-21 Thread Jesse Bussell
Hello! I am hoping to do a lot more quick overnight trips this year and was
wondering if people had favorite rides and camp spots in the bay area? I
have a few Marin sites on my list (Pantoll, Hawk).

I live in SF, but not opposed to taking bart as part of the trip.

[RBW] Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-21 Thread Jason M
First post here! I've been reading some of the threads and this sounds
like a good place...my new happy place ;-)

I ordered the dark gold Roadini (57) from the only shop in Canada that
sells Riv (C&L Cycles) and will be picking it up in a few weeks when I'll
be visiting Montreal.

Looking for this to be a project bike, that evolves over time. For now
though, I had a lot of new / lightly used parts on hand, so I'll be using
those and having the bike shop supply the rest (including some handbill
wheels for some lightly used 43mm GKSS tires I'm using on my Fargo in the
winter). Build will be Shimano 11sp, with DT shifters and Tektro RRL brake
levers, and Tektro brakes.

Purpose of the bike is all-road (where I live, a lot of that is paved, but
there are gravel roads further out), but will not be used much on local
mixed-surface trails (where the Fargo excels). My current road bike will
be jealous, but I'm not kicking her to the curb just yet!

Photos to come in February.

[RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-21 Thread daniel belyusar
Hiya,
Myself and another list member rode it for the first time last year. He on
a Riv, me on my 83 Trek 620. (also another friend from Iowa and his dad).
We met a number of Riv-riders including Reginald along the way ;). Overall
it was a mixed bag. I never really got around to writing my scene report so
here goes the brain dump...

Logistics:
- We joined a small bike club based in Dubuque. We drove from Chicago to
Dubuque, then they carried our duffles and bikes across, chartered a bus,
and arranged with the organizers to secure a plot of land in each town for
the 30-40 people from the club. It was honestly pretty spartan and not all
that great. Part of the problem was that it was very hot almost the whole
week; so without a place to go to at the end of the day, we ended up having
to either kill time along the way, or immediately re-pack to ride to a
public pool or something. Just sitting in an open field in 90 degrees and
humid is not fun for me. As someone mentioned, everyone who I met along the
way that used Pork Belly loved it - they set up a tent for you, have
showers and beer and I think even entertainment. They're also very
well-connected to the organizers over many years and seemed to have the
prime locations. And yes, there are plenty of other companies including
portable AC'd huts if you want!

- If I were to do it again, I think I'd make arrangements with locals in
each town to camp on their lawn and bike pack (the organizers support a
message board to make arrangements). An idea I heard a number of times
which also seemed good if you can swing it: have a SAG vehicle shared
between a small crew. It can be a car, but prob would be what you would
drive to the start. Each day has a main lunch town/ meetup, about half way.
So in the car crew, one person misses a half day of riding, round robin.
The second half driver gets set up in the overnight town, everyone gets a
little AC as needed, and you can get around to stores and maybe even get
out of town a bit to beat the crowds if you want. Some people also rent RVs
and it seems like there are some designated places for them, but again you
need someone to drive.

- WRT to drunken shenanigans, honestly I didn't see much if any of it. The
rides were pretty brutal with the heat and elevation, so if you partied
hard the night before, I was probably way ahead the next day. We might have
had a couple beers in the shade here and there, but when there is still
miles 61 - 80 to go, and its 90 degrees, I think you'd be silly/dangerous
to hit it hard. Once in town, everyone was pretty spread out throughout, so
maybe I just missed it?

The Good:
- I've never really done any long bike touring before (maybe 3 days max) so
this was the longest number of days that all I had to do was ride! Almost
all of the roads are closed and the route obvious, so for 500 mile over 7
days, just wake up and keep pedaling. I could see why some might find the
terrain a bit same-y, but there was a ton of elevation change, really
pretty landscapes, and enough rivers and towns to keep me interested.

- the tech support was amazing. every town (? or most) had a service stop
with a number of very capable, approachable, and affordable crew for
repairs. I wore out a front derailer cable mid week (so many hills!), my
friend broke a spoke on a different day. In both cases it was like 30 min,
$20 and back on the road. Watching them lace up my old Suntour fd on the
'83 Trek, followed by a wireless rear on a carbon fiber '23 Trek for the
next person in line was pretty awesome (new battery for your rd? $60 fully
charged!).

- I thought my bike was perfect. I rode 650b x38 smooth gravel kings, 46-30
front and wide-ish rear, basic tektro brakes. I got a lot of comments both
snarky and fun (met more than one person that had done cross country rides
on 520s and 620s 'back in the day')

- I'm a pretty social person, but I met and rode with a lot of nice
strangers on interesting bikes (see above). Learned about some cool tours,
some cool bikes new and old. Despite the next section, I met quite a few
folks that were into the same things I am. You know the old Honda ads? "You
meet the nicest people on a Honda/ steel bike". As someone said, there is
also that overall good vibe of just nothing but bikers everywhere...

The Bad:
- it was really crowded. I know, of course I expected that, and it was the
50th anniversary, so it might have been particularly packed. For me there
were only a couple of rough patches where it was actually challenging to be
riding with so many people, trying to change lanes etc, and the biggest
headache was the swifties 'ON YOUR LEFT!' when it was crowded and I
couldn't go any more right. I think I had to dismount once owing to a crowd
going around a tight bend. But if you are planning to leave at a leisurely
sun-up time, and riding a modest pace, expect lines for everything (could
be like an hour for a beer or a

[RBW] Silver crank arm trade

2024-01-21 Thread Luke Whitmore
Greetings,

I have a Clem H (size 59) that came to me with the stock Silver cranks at
the 178 length with the 38/24 double chainring setup. I'm thinking that I
would like to explore using a shorter crank. I'm curious is there is anyone
out there who has the same setup but with 170 length Silver cranks. If so
perhaps we could explore a crank arm trade. Please DM me to explore this
further, request pictures, etc...

best,

Luke

[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-21 Thread iamkeith
Nick, as I mentioned in my question, I too only have experience with cranks
that take spacers between the arm and the cup. It makes more sense that
way, but this bb definitely seems to require spacers next to the shell.
That's how it was assembled when it arrived. I just cant figure out why
it's asymmetrical. Ive now learned that, even with a 73mm shell, it would
still require a single 2.5mm spacer on the drive side, UNLESS there was a
bb-mounted deraileur or bash gauard plate. But you'd think the crank arms
would be shaped to compensate for that.

As set up in my photo, I have a 50mm chainline. Sheldon says a road double
should be 47mm, so that's another reason not to add more spacers on that
side.

You probably had the best idea though. I guess I'll take a dremel to the
non-drive-side arm or spidel end, so it can slide inward a few more
millimeters and at least be symmetrical.

It'll still be wider than necessary, but I'm not Q- factor sensitive,
fortunately. I guess this is really intended as a mtb crank, even though
it doesn't say that on soma's or interloc's website?

[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-21 Thread Garth
Keith, road bike double crank chainline spec is always 43.5mm. Are you
measuring between the rings ?

You may hate me for saying so but it sounds like this crank would be better
suited for another frame with at least 135mm spacing. With the big ring
that far out on a 130mm spaced road frame, your available cogs(without a
lot of friction) diminishes by at least one, likely two.

2024-01-21 Thread Brenton Eastman
[I'm curious why you didn't just replace the fork with a disc mount option
and leave the rear a canti/linear pull brake?]

While an exploratory project like this might not be the quickest or most
logical route, it results in a very unique ride!

There are probably lugged frame+forks out there with Atlantis geometry
available to buy+build, but where's the fun in that?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Atlantis special disc edition

2024-01-21 Thread Patrick Moore
I think that the custom adaptation is just right; after all, it is an
Atlantis. Also, practically, one reason for disc brakes is that they
eliminate rim scouring -- recall a 20 mile ride on my Joe Starck custom Riv
Road gofast where I got caught in the rain on the return; even ~10 miles
was enough for at least light scouring on the front (single front caliper
brake) rim as grit in water splashed onto the rims. (Discs also allow very
light rims to be used if that's of interest.)

But if I were to customize an Atlantis with discs, I'd want it done
symmetrically and right.

[RBW] FS: Two pairs of the new MUSA shorts sz. L & a Woolywarm wool jersey sz. XL

2024-01-21 Thread Daniel Rooke
Hello,

I have one Black and one Ranger Green pair of the new MUSA shorts for sale.
Two small marks on the right rear pocket of the green shorts. Both are
size large and weren't worn much.

$70 for the black and $65 for the green or $110 for both.

The Woolywarm jersey is navy merino wool and no size tag so I'll provide
the measurements below. It's in excellent condition. I never wore it but
bought it from someone else, although it looks almost new. Maybe they
didn't wear it either? It's really, really nice and if it fit me I'd keep
it.

Armpit to armpit: 22"
Collar to hem: 30"
Collar to end of the short sleeve is 14"

All prices include shipping.

If you want everything let's say $160.

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Atlantis special disc edition

2024-01-21 Thread George Schick
Patrick - I don't think Grant would approve. But everyone has their own
preference. I have a Surly 1x1 with a disc on the front fork and a linear
pull on the rear. The reason for that is because when I first bought it
and had it set up like that it had a fixed/SS flip-flop hub on the rear
which would have made a disc option impossible. My experience with fixed
was short lived, however, and now I just run a single speed sprocket. I'm
not sorry that it worked out that way, though, and I like it the way it is.

[RBW] SPD pedal recomendation

2024-01-21 Thread Bernard Duhon
I am in the hunt for a set of dual sided SPD pedals.
I'm going flat on my touring bike but there is too much total overlap on one of
my bikes to do anything but a clip .
I have been riding the old Onza elastomer SPD's.

any suggestions?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell Atlantis special disc edition

2024-01-21 Thread Miles Payton
You’d have to ask the previous owner who commissioned this custom fork. But
I would have done it the same way. I appreciate the versatility in having
the option to go full canti or v brake somewhere down the line. And this
way it’s symmetrical.

George: I daresay Grant would balk at this conversion. And I can understand
his allegiance to rim brakes; of all the kinds of brakes, as far as I can
tell, rim brakes give the biggest return in effectiveness (strength,
modulation, time between fettling) with the greatest simplicity and ease of
setup. And I can understand someone choosing a hybrid front disc/rear rim
brake system.

But I have to say, that disc's Atlantis is really nice!

I have XTRs and XTs and even SPD (mtb-type SPD) Dura Ace, but in my
experience the PD M520 is about the best value in a clipless pedal that you
can find in this galaxy.

Always ask for Shimano SPD and accept no substitutes. I've used non-Shimano
clones and ... nope, choose Shimano.

Patrick, tires are Soma Cazadero 700x50mm. They’re an underrated gravel
tire I think. Fast, very light, supple, perform pretty well in a variety of
conditions and terrains, dry and wet.

Just curious, if you are using 11sp, why not use integrated
shifters/levers? To each their own for sure, but I can't imagine DT
shifters on a mixed-surface trail unless it's really smooth.. heck, I don't
even care for bar-ends on a trail.. but those RRL levers are super nice!

I'm leaning hard into a Roadini that I may put a Campy 10 Triple group I
have on it..

I will add them to my short list of tires for a 2nd dirt-surface wheelset
to complement the Soma Supple Vitesse SLs that ride and handle so nicely on
pavement.

I used to own this bike. It was a demo that I bought complete from

disc mounts. He listed it for sale not long after that as I remember. I

[RBW] Re: SPD pedal recomendation

2024-01-21 Thread Piaw Na
If you're not going to do serious single track I highly recommend the
PD-ES600. https://blog.piaw.net/2022/10/review-shimano-pd-es600.html

My friends were really skeptical that it would make any difference compared
to the venerable and well respected (deservedly so) M520s, but the wings
and wider platform definitely make these pedals feel much better connected
than the M520s, and are the first pedals I've tried that I consider a
significant improvement over the M520s. My biggest issue with them is that
you have to mount them with an allen wrench instead of having wrench flats.
Beware though, they're singled sided (which is what makes the connection
feel so nice --- the design wouldn't have worked with a double-sided pedal,
I don't think)! But for paved riding they're really awesome.

[RBW] Re: Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-21 Thread Jay
I hear you 'fourflys', I was undecided before going with the DT and the
RRSL levers. My Fargo has brifters and on the mixed-surface, often
technical trails I ride, it's very handy. My road bike has brifters. I
decided I wanted to try something different, plus I like the idea of them
being friction, and the simplicity of them (oh, and the lower cost, as I
didn't have brifters on hand, like I did other parts). I had DT shifters
on a bike I built up around 10 years ago and liked them. This bike will
mainly be ridden on paved roads, and occasional gravel roads and rail
trails (80/20), so I'm sure it will be fine. But once I ride it, we'll see
how I adjust.

[RBW] TRP RRL Hood Black to Gum

2024-01-21 Thread DTL
Has anyone swapped the hoods?

The gum levers have a 'grey' portion between the hood and the lever - so
can I assume if I put the gum hoods on originally black / silver levers, I
would have a gum / black / silver lever?

Has anyone swapped out hoods? Would love to see photos.

Thank you for the recommendation
Jan Heine used the a600s. The difference is the ES600 sawed off a few
millimeters on the back of the pedal. That shrinks your foot platform.
do you know if there were any other "improvements "between the A600 and the
Es600

Thank you for reminding me of these because I had forgotten. I'll try and find
a new old stock version of the A600
only be using this on pavement, gravel & forest road.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell and Brooks B68 short film

2024-01-21 Thread Jason Fuller
I am glad to see the B68 back, it'll be my pick if I ever build a more
upright bike than my current options - I tend to like a pretty upright-ish
position but still like the bars just above saddle height. If I had the
space I'd totally build up a Clem with the B68, some nice high bars, and
some low gears for commuting and errands.

I will echo that the Hillborne, even the newest upcoming batch, still
retains a very sensibly short wheelbase. I want to say around 455mm stays
in my size. Still feels plenty responsive while being much more comfortable
than bikes with 415-425 stays.

[RBW] Re: External bottom brackets for dummies?

2024-01-21 Thread Max S
A different, but related question:

I mistakenly bought the MTN version of a Shimano bottom bracket (external
cups) for a recent 105 crank. Comparing to the old (road) BB, it looked to
me like the only difference was the internal plastic sleeve length. I
swapped in the old sleeve between the new cups, and that seemed to go in
fine. Maybe last couple of millimeters were a little tighter than the right
hand cup, but went in.

Did I do something that will come back to bite me?..

You’re absolutely right on the prep work. Both bikes were chased, but
the Soma was not faced… probably why it gets by with the spacer stack
 slightly smaller.

Re: [RBW] Re: SPD pedal recomendation

2024-01-21 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
I recommend using the A600 if you can find them, because (similar to most
road pedals) they return to the upright position with the pedal
perpendicular to the ground, so you can clip in without looking. The ES600
spins 360, so the pedal can be upside down or any which way when you go to
clip back in, so you might need to rotate the pedal 180 degrees into the
correct position when you clip in.

With that said, I still chose the ES600 when I replaced my Look Keo pedals,
so I can walk around more comfortably and can live with the extra effort
when I clip in.

Toshi

[RBW] Re: Roadini Build - Mix of Modern and Retro

2024-01-21 Thread Piaw Na
I went with 11s and a single DT shifter (I'm running 1x11) and I treat my
Roadini as a gravel bike. It's great. Usually I climb on the road so
shifting is not a problem, and descending who cares what gears you're in.
But on the few occasions I did a a dirt climb and I'd just shift into the
lowest gear and stay there. My goal for the Roadini was to make it as light
as possible (given the relatively heavy frame) while still able to do hard
climbs. It hasn't disappointed.
