Rear hub is FW/FW not threaded for fixed.
Asking $200 net to me. Prefer local pick up in NYC but will ship as

Bought this from Blue Lug and just haven't used it much at all. Its huge,
kind of like a newer old school Jansport. Very lightweight and packable as

[RBW] Re: Experience with North Street Bags backpack panniers?

2024-02-27 Thread Armand Kizirian
I have been using an Ortlieb Vario (latest model) every weekday for nearly
a year and it has been fantastic. I'm an industrial designer who has
designed many bags. This is hard to beat. I'm typically not a fan of the
overly engineered plastic/advanced manufacturing methods, but it is
extremely effective in this context. The most important elements are all a
9/10 or 10/10, being:

-Minimal friction to convert from pannier to backpack. Takes me 3-5
seconds. If this isn't easy, you will not be encouraged to use the feature.
- Straps/back of the bag/anything that touches clothing is fully protected
from road grime.
- The backpack actually functions well as a backpack. Mine is VERY heavy (I
carry a full mobile office in it) and it handles the weight VERY
comfortably.

Retail price is very expensive but I got mine new off eBay for a
considerable discount. Very minimal organization, but excellent size,
especially considering the option to expand with the roll top. As with all
ortlieb products, I can bike in a downpour and have zero concern for my
electronics.

[RBW] Experience with North Street Bags backpack panniers?

2024-02-27 Thread Robert Blunt
Greetings everyone,
I am going to cycle the Zuiderzee bicycle route in the Netherlands in April
(400km) and am trying to figure out the best way to go straight from the
airport to the bike rental place without dragging a suitcase and all the
hassle entailed with that. I am definitely packing in a minimalist fashion
and am interested in the various offerings of backpack panniers. It will be
a three week trip and the 32 liter North St. Bags Woodward backpack pannier
seems like one of the better options out there for having a carry-on that
can transition straight from the airport to a bicycle rear rack. Does
anyone have any experience with this bag or similar products? Thanks in
advance.

I am looking to but a 60cm Cheviot, ideally just the F/BB/HS/F, and ideally
locally, in Western NC. If it's not local, so be it. If someone is

I would *consider* a 60cm Platypus or a 59cm Clem L

[RBW] White plastic water bottles with screw-on top

2024-02-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Segue from the bottle cage thread.

I fumble with the nomenclature, but I used to have a few very well made
white plastic water bottles, probably not bike-specific, made from thick
and stiff white plastic and with a screw-*on* top that covered the
aperture, as opposed to screw-*in* tops that fit inside the apertures.

I have no idea what these are called or who made them or what they are made
from, but I recall that mine --given me by someone -- were "high end"
products; and the weight of the plastic and the accuracy of the threading
makes me believe that this is true. These were *not* squeezable, but nor
were they "brittle" plastic.

They looked something, but not exactly like this; they had longer necks and
the plastic "looked" better.

They also, at least in certain sizes, fit well into standard bottle cages.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Re: [RBW] Going really large on Clems

2024-02-27 Thread Kim H.
I originally bought a 59cm Clem "L". I rode it for nearly two years
thinking that it was right size for me. However, I came to realize that it
was way too big for me to handle. I have a long torso with short limbs.

I was fortunate to sell it locally and find a beautiful RBW blue 52cm Clem
"Demo" at Rivendell Bicycle Works headquarters in Walnut Creek. I delight
in riding it much more so than the 59cm with it smaller 650B wheels. I love
my bicycle now.

The buyer of my 59cm Clem is happy. He is the same height as I am, but he
has longer limbs and a shorter torso, than I do.

They don’t have the shiny finish of the King, or VO versions. Most people
ask me if they are titanium, but they are just stainless.

I use the Kleen Kanteen classic stainless bottles with them, and it
 looks classy and doesn’t rattle.

Re: [RBW] Stainless bottle/ cage recommendation

2024-02-27 Thread Patrick Moore
Will: where do you find those screw-top, stainless steel, insulated Bivos?
I just looked and found only the usual pop-spout type.

Thanks.

In other news: REI was recently having a 1/2 price sale on their
"Microlite" ss insulated bottles; these have a full-coverage flip-up spout
cover which I really like for dirt (= horse leavings) riding around here.

Cages: Iris all the way. (Remember breaking 2 expensive and very beautiful
Nitto cages with 28 oz bottles.)

[RBW] Re: Philadelphia Bike Expo March 16 - 17

2024-02-27 Thread Tom Goodmann
This will be my first time at PBE (I missed all of the years of NAHBS).
Regrettably coming from Miami without a bike, but hoping to rent one for at
least one of the rides, and also volunteering for a shift at the show.
Happy to meet up with Rivfolk! (Do we need a secret sign???)

somewhere out there)

2024-02-27 Thread Caroline Golum
Gonna throw my hat in the ring for the Arundel stainless steel cage, which
I've had for 10+ years without a hitch. And it's slightly adjustable as the
steel has some give to it. I've put whole bottles of wine in there, iced
coffee cups, my regular Yeti,
etc.
