Re: [RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Pictures Thread

2024-05-21 Thread Michael Baquerizo
Thanks Paul - the red is a custom color. I wanted something as similar to
'Rad Red' that Richard Sachs was using a few years ago. There was supposed
to be a hint of pink that didn't really come through, but i'm happy with it
nonetheless.

It was the result of buying a blem frame from Rivendell and deciding I was
going to make it my own. I think it started it's life as an orange bike
originally.

Re: [RBW] Re: TRP RRL vs Shimano Tiagra

2024-05-21 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
For me, the big difference is whether or not I am riding in the drops or on
the hoods. For descents, I often will ride in the drops to reduce wind
resistance and the TRP levers with the outward bend make it easier to brake
while in the drops. However, I find the Shimano levers more comfortable on
the hoods.

Nevertheless, I tend to ride more in the drops than the hoods, so TRPs are
the winner for me.

[RBW] Re: Will the 50cm Susie be too small?

2024-05-21 Thread John C
Too late! I actually went with the gold in 50cm.

FWIW, I compared the frame size after delivery to my vintage Stumpjumper
(with Ron's Ortho bars), and Bombora. I actually don't think it will be an
issue. The Susie has a much longer TT and both of those bikes fit me well.

I'll post up the final build once it's complete.

Hey y’all, longtime lurker here. Looking to potentially pick up my
first Riv and have a few questions about sizing. Maybe someone with
 similar
measurements and own a Susie/Gus could chime in.

I’m looking at the 50cm in gold color. Riv says:

- 50cm (650B wheels): 74-76cm. Saddle height: 63cm to 65cm
- 53cm (650B wheels): 77-88cm. Saddle height: 66cm to 77cm

My PBH is: 76.5cm-78cm measured multiple times. I’m 5’6 with a longer
 torso.

Saddle height: 64cm (most of my bikes are Riv inspired vtg MTBs with
upright bars and this feels comfy for me)

Seems like I'm on the edge between Med / Small. Can the small fit
without feeling too cramped? FWIW, I rode a Gus test bike years ago at
Rivelo here in PDX while it was still open. They were fantastic, but
unfortunately I can't remember if I rode a small or med size frame.

Even when just riding with my phone, with it in the pocket of a normal pair of shorts, it's not a great to wrestle it out while pedaling. Have ridding a couple times with the RX100 in a stem pouch and that's probably the best carry option I've used so far. Ir maybe that sort of bag worn on a belt, or...a fanny pack. For carrying phone/cameras, I've been using one of the Routewerks handlebar bags for several years. That looks really really practical. I need to do a deep dive into getting a new handlebar bag. Would like a bigger one and one with a quick release so it's less fiddly to not leave my bag behind when stopping somewhere while riding around town. Using mustache handlebars complicates things a little, but deciding to go with pink accents even more so.Think for larger cameras with interchangeable lenses, even if a relatively small one with a not-big lens, is gonna be best carried in a bigger handelbar bag. Using a shoulder strap with a stabilizer strap works well too, but I just don't want the weight on me, even if it's not all that much. So far, for the RX100, a stem pouch has been pretty good, and I've stuck a folded innertube at the bottom of the bag to raise the floor and make it easier to get the camera out while pedaling. But this definitely won't take an MILC, unless it's an especially small body and especially flat pancake lens.Another camera that I wish I had to try out for carrying while riding is a Panasonic LX100. Pretty compact all-in-one with a 24-75mm (equiv) zoom and m43 sensor. ChesterSF Bay Area

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-21 Thread J S

If I listened to rivendell on what size stem to use it would quite a bit
longer. I opted fot a shorter stem and that works for me. Maybe you should
call Rivendell to see that the stem length was on the bike you ride, then
go down a smidge on a 60 to bring the bars closer. I think I use an 8cm
stem on my Hillborne, the folks at Riv suggested at least am 11. I know my
body. Good luck.

You are in Berkeley, you should BART over to RIv World HQ and test one
out on the local loop up in shell ridge (its dry and perfect riding

billie/alba, but might be worth calling them first before making the
 appointment.

Collin, also in Berkeley, but with an 81cm PBH.

[RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne sizing advice

2024-05-21 Thread Tom
I'm 6' tall with a 89.5 PBH. Someone here posted that, if on the fence
size-wise, they usually size down for a drop bar setup and size up for a
swept-back bar setup. That is also my experience.

For those close to my height and PBH, the following list of Rivs, sizes,
and bar setups has worked for me. I'll happy to answer any questions you
may have about them:
- 58 Sam: drop (Noodle -- best) & swept (Albatross -- a little cramped)
- 59 Clem H: swept (Albatross, Jones, Bullmoose, Losco)
- 61 Roadini: drop (stretching it, 5cm stem) & swept (Albatross (regular &
inverted), Jitensha, Ahearne+Map, Wavie)
- 61.5 Homer: swept (Albatross, Jitensha, Wavie, Ahearne+Map)
- 62 Saluki: swept (Wavie, Albatross?, Ahearne+Map)
- 62 SimpleOne: swept (Albatross (regular & inverted))
- 62 Sam: swept (Albatross, Jitensha)
- 64 Atlantis - Toyo: swept (Ahearne+Map, Albatross)

Currently I only own the 62 Sam and the 59 Clem H (and an unbuilt 58 Hunq)
in swept bar config's. Because I wanted something that would comfortably
accommodate a drop bar (Noodle or a B135 Grand Raundoneur), and knowing I
could play with stem length and dial it in, I put my name on one of the new
57 Sam's...which has a similar-enough geo to the previous 58 Sam with a
Noodle bar I used to own.

Another "me-too" story here. I ran xc and track in junior high and was
somewhat competitive. In 9th grade my knees started to hurt. I stopped
running, started riding, and have never looked back. I'd tell my father
about riding 600km and he'd ask, incredulously, "Don't your knees hurt?"

Ortleib's hardware is mostly molded plastic/nylon, not something that is
