Re: [RBW] Heron Road Seatpost Size?

2024-05-23 Thread Josiah Anderson
Zac, apologies if you already know this, but you can often tell if the top
of a seat tube has been pinched down, because the sides of the slot won't
be parallel. If it looks like the slot gets narrower towards the top, I'd
try to carefully pry it open and see if a 27.2 post fits, but whether you
want to try that on your Heron probably depends on your comfort level with
gently bending steel.

[RBW] 2019 55 CM Atlantis for Sale

2024-05-23 Thread atreya...@gmail.com
Folks,
A week ago I put the frame only for sale to see if I could fund a Sam.
Fortunately another bike has come my way and I am selling the entire bike.
It is in excellent condition and may be minor scratches barely visible to
naked eyes. I could spot only one and my camera had tough time focusing on
it!

Its been built with premium components , Paul levers, Moto lite , Paul
skewers. It has quill wheels with onyx hub built by Rich. I can't recommend
these hubs enough!. The brooks b68 saddle on it is brand new (less than 10
miles ). Everything on bike can go except for bells and lights .

I am asking $3500 and buyer can arrange shipping with a local bike shop. I
believe this is a great deal. I am based out of east bay and would prefer
local sale.

[RBW] Heron Road Seatpost Size?

2024-05-23 Thread Zac
Can anyone confirm the seat post on their Heron Road is 27.2mm?

According to Sheldon Brown's database, all Heron's use a 27.2 post, but the
one I just tried to install wasn't going in at all. I rode by a shop and
their calipers gave 26.8-9 for both the seat tube and existing seat post.

The bike is fairly new to me, perhaps the seat tube got pinched at the top
at some point.

This all got me wondering if one could get a helmet cover/hat in the style

I don't know anything about the extent to which equestrian helmet standards
overlap with cycling helmets. And I'm still aspiring to make myself ride

Re: [RBW] Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Eric Daume
I'm going to be the contrarian here. My experience is that I tend to enjoy
the "cheap and cheerful" bikes more than bikes that were more expensive
with greater expectations. I look at my little bike fleet, and sometimes
think I could sell off a good chunk of them and buy something "nicer," but
in practice, this doesn't work for me. I've owned a handful of Rivs over
the years, but my current favorite bike is a 40 year old Trek that I paid
$200 for, set up as a simple fixed gear.

I'll also add that in my experience of flipping many bikes, Rivs don't hold
their value better or worse than any other more mainstream frames; they're
just more expensive to start with. Buying used is always the best way to
avoid any tears here.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Bike Day: My Little Platy

2024-05-23 Thread Patrick Moore
IMO this ties with the other customized Platypus featured here recently for
"nicest-looking Platypus in list history," and it probably wins the award
for "most attention paid to aesthetics" in list history. Note: I think very
many of the Rivs posted are lovely to look at.

Me, as with Mitch, "I am a guy." I am fully OC about my bikes for parts and
builds and design (I remember most of the parts from my first 1970 full
build), but not aesthetics, and it's interesting to see how others'
passions turn out.

Cerakoting is new to me; had to Google it. I see it differs from anodizing,
but, how exactly? Too bad webmeisters are generally better fancy web page
design than conveying information -- this for global corporate websites as
well as bike websites; the latter on the whole do better. I gather that
anodizing is colored (or not) oxidizing while cerakoting is a --- coating.

[RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Michael Morrissey
Hi! To answer your second question, no you cannot make an 80s bike into a
Rivendell. I have an 80s Mountain Bike and an Appaloosa. The Appaloosa is
great, and it fits me a lot better than the 80s mountain bike. The 80s
mountain bike is 80% of a Rivendell, but it's that diminishing return, that
difference that makes it a Rivendell. I commute on the Appaloosa and yes,
it is overkill. It's heavy (Rivendell is the only bike company that doesn't
publish what their frames weigh, AFAIK) and I'm slow but I like it anyway.
Please consider what bike will fit you best. I wanted a 29er 80s mountain
bike, and that is essentially what the Appaloosa is. I bought mine in 2016.
Since then, there are a lot more options for "gravel" bikes and bikes that
are similar to the Appaloosa.

If you've got the money, go for it. If you're in NYC I'll let you take my
Appaloosa for a ride to test it.

You should get an Atlantis and if it’s too heavy to commute, sell the Cimmaron (they’re very collectible too) and get something lighter for commuting. Finally. New. Bike. Day.

This bike was a long time coming. I bought the frame in November
(November!) and have waited this long for the plethora of specialty parts
 to arrive.

Purple is a fun color; it never takes itself too seriously. It goes
with most other colors, which is what led me to choose…all the colors.

The theme for this Platypus is: 80s My Little Pony. I call the bike My
 Little Platy.

The bike is a 50cm Rivendell Platypus with 650b wheels; it can be taken
on Amtrak and bus racks, which is something its 55cm siblings cannot do. I
put fat tires on it so it can handle gravel. My Gravel & Travel Platy.

I adored My Little Pony in my girlhood, and my favorite ponies had
rainbow hair. Why settle for just pink or blue when some ponies had ALL
 the
colors? I started out this build incorporating a color here or there. (I
had my Paul brakes already cerakoted in blues.) But while looking for
grips, I found Ergon oil slick clamps and had my revelation: I wanted oil
slick everywhere I could get it.

Because oil slick has ALL the colors.

All the makers of these parts worked with me to make this bike happen.
They sent their beautiful products to me and let me alter them in wild,
saturated, living color. I don’t know if any of them understood why I was
going all out like this. All of them were men, save one - the anodizer.
 You
can see her work in the levers, chain rings, cranks, and bottom bracket.
 She understood the assignment.

I live with 3 men and none of them give the bike their stamp of
approval. The Lone Wolf will howl, alright. I remain steadfast in my
adoration of this bike because it does something for me. Takes me back to
my simple, happy 80s and 90s childhood. If when you were a little girl
(most of your were not), your friend had a dress-up closet and you could
choose from her lavish collection of finery to wear at playtime, and you
just came out WEARING ALL OF IT, well, that is this Platypus.

Thank you to everyone at Analog Cycles, Paul Components, Ignite
Components, Ashley Anodized It, Velocity USA and Pedal Bicycles for making
this silly concept a real, tangible bicycle. And of course, thank you to
Rivendell Bicycle Works, who makes the best bikes in the world.

I know this has come up before regarding Rivs (or other artisinal bikes)
and commuting butif you really want that Atlantis AND you can keep it
secure during the workday go for it...or can you justify an n+1 and keep
the Schwinn for commuting/errands...or can you live with/plan for
(insurance rider) that said Atlantis could be stolen?

@Hoch -- A 3 mile "commute"?  That's what I've got and I might ride three
different bikes in a given week.. it's more about fenders and lights when
needed than the riding experience. What "riding experience?" As soon as it

None of this is an indictment of using whatever bike one enjoys.

@Brian T
>> However, the current version of the Atlantis does not hold the same

What is an Atlantis? The modern version is much closer to the Appaloosa
than it is to the original Atlantis.
I'm leery of meter-long chain stays, so I'd go the used route here, too.
But I have no actual experience to back it up.

However: if it's gonna be an Atlantis, I think we can all agree that it
MUST be Atlantis green. Accept no substitutes.

I can't quote it but I believe that Grant has said at various times that
there's always going to be an Atlantis, and that it's always going to be
made in the U.S. -- and then things changed, and Waterford closed its
doors, and something had to give. Which is why we have the oddity of
Appaloosa and Atlantis being produced side-by-side in Taiwan.

Re: [RBW] Cameras On Bikes

2024-05-23 Thread rltilley
I’ve had somewhere around 50 cancers surgically removed. One melanoma and the rest basal cells. I’m of Irish ancestry but grew up and still live in SoCal. My skin type doesn’t belong here for sure. I basically stopped wearing a helmet and wear wide brimmed hats when I ride. I also wear sun shirts to cover my upper body. For the riding I do a sun hat is better protection than a helmet would be.For rides where a helmet makes sense I wear a skull cap underneath and apply sunscreen. I do try and avoid the 10-2 timeframe but that isn’t always an option.Robert TilleySan Diego, CASent from my iPhoneOn May 23, 2024, at 6:19 AM, Sarah Carlson wrote:Thank you for bringing this up! Advertised for women, I wanted an alternative to wearing a do-rag under my helmet, and a Da Brim around the sides. The full cover is at the bequest of my dermatologist, who's provided me a weight loss effort this past year removing chunks from my ear, arm, hand, and foot. Too much swimming, surfing, fly fishing, and I suppose cycling in the Colorado, Idaho, Arizona, and California sun for too many years. An old surfer friend of mine had skin cancer in his scalp, and I really don't want to experience that. I look for sun coverage in anything I put on my head, and I pretty much always wear a full brim hat whenever I go outsider now. I cringe a little when I see trendy shaved heads under massively vented helmets, either at the amounts of sun the wearer is receiving, or at the amounts of sunscreen they are applying to their scalps. The Bike Pretty cover is made for a particular type helmet that did not interest me, but their advertising stated the size XL cover may fit various other helmets. Here is the Bike Pretty XL on a size medium Specialized Align II helmet: And the same on my size XL cover on a size L/XL Specialized Align II helmet, with festive black ribbon removed: And from a rear perspective you can see how the tailfin of the helmet profile protrudes a bit into the straw weave: The cover fits without issue on the size medium helmet, but was a close fit on the size L/XL, so I fastened first from the front of the elastic band to the helmet with some black thread: And then my wife stitched this much nicer hemp thread detail to the rear to keep the thing from flying off in the breeze: The cover weave breathes so much nicer that a do-rag or hat worn under the helmet, and provides ample cover (although it's a weave, and not solid fabric as with the heavier Da Brim). I was pretty unsure about ordering it, thinking it was too goofy, but thought it would be no worse in appearance than the Da Brim. Our cycling group went crazy when they was it, and my wife ordered hers right away. My next helmet purchase, and soon, will be a more round and better fitted helmet to go with the Bike Pretty weave cover. I really like it! Maybe Grant will introduce a better brim and coverage during his helmet investigation? Cheers,Chris On Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 7:37:54 PM UTC-7 Andrew Letton wrote:

[RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Hoch in ut
Mostly everyone is responding with their heart, which is expected.

Atlantis is a touring bike. Heavy duty frame, large tire clearance.
Exceptional bike. I had two Hunqapillars, which I see as equivalent to the
Atlantis. For touring and/or slower long distance rides, I’d say go for it.

For a 4 mile commute? Stick with your bike. I don’t know what the other
person was talking about. There are plenty of parts to upgrade a vintage
bike. Or if you really want a Riv, get. Homer, Sam, or another lighter duty
bike meant for commuting. I think you’d enjoy it more.

I have a similar 3 mile commute. I rode my Hunq for a few months but
eventually built up an old Fuji road bike. Then happened upon a Clem for a
good deal which I rode for a few months. But as much as I wanted to ride it
for the commutes, it was just too much bike. The old Fuji was better.

My current commuter is an unknown vintage MTB frame with 26x1.75 slicks. I
honestly don’t miss my Riv’s on the commutes. Now, if a Homer were to pop
up for a good deal……..

 Finally. New. Bike.

[RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Bruce Byker James
I was in a similar situation to you not long ago. I had a heavily
Rivendell-influenced Fuji touring and a Kona Smoke. Last summer I was able
to stop by Rivendell and ride a Clem and an Appaloosa. I loved them both
about the same, except that I'm not crazy about the look of the step-thru
Clem. I get that it's super practical, but I wanted something I would also
love to look at. I lock up my bike in the city a decent amount, so it
couldn't be too flashy. I had some unexpected money, but not very much, so
the Appaloosa was out of range. I started paying close attention to the
used market, came across a Clem H in my size and purchased it in March. I
LOVE it!

Without the unexpected money, I definitely would have kept enjoying the
bikes I already had, but the Clem leveled-up my bicycle riding joy and so
far it's made me spend more time riding.

Great to finally see the completed bike! May you ride many blissful miles

Did you order the parts and send it to the woman to anodize them?

 Finally. New. Bike. Day.

Purple is a fun color; it never takes itself too seriously. It goes

The theme for this Platypus is: 80s My Little Pony. I call the bike My

The bike is a 50cm Rivendell Platypus with 650b wheels; it can be taken
on Amtrak and bus racks, which is something its 55cm siblings cannot do. I
put fat tires on it so it can handle gravel. My Gravel & Travel Platy.

I adored My Little Pony in my girlhood, and my favorite ponies had

had my Paul brakes already cerakoted in blues.) But while looking for
grips, I found Ergon oil slick clamps and had my revelation: I wanted oil
slick everywhere I could get it.

Re: [RBW] Cameras On Bikes

2024-05-23 Thread Sarah Carlson
Thank you for bringing this up! I have had only baby chonks chopped out by
my dermatologist but I recently had a friend pass away from skin cancer. I
just bought Da Brim in a festive pastel ribbon look. While it feels a bit
derpy, it is preferable to the alternative.

I feel like the Bike Pretty could go well on an elegant Platypus picnic
ride.

I'm waiting for pictures to show up on Leah's "Fashion on the bike" thread!

[RBW] Re: Is an Atlantis Worth It?

2024-05-23 Thread Sarah Carlson
YES, you should get one. It's a lovely bike and capable of so many things.
If you want to be able to go from road to gravel and wherever you want you
should get this bike!

I keep waiting for someone to roll it onto BART. It is so distinctive and
seems like a crime of opportunity that the thief is unlikely to realize
they have stolen an instagram recognizable bike.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day: My Little Platy

2024-05-23 Thread Sarah Carlson
When "too much" is "just right." This bike will make you (and anyone who
sees it) smile. Who could not smile at the sight on a My Little Platy
coming down the road! I hope you have many joyous miles riding, and that
some of them are in California so we can see it in person!

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day: My Little Platy

2024-05-23 Thread Roberta
I love it. Such a happy looking bike and I’m sure will bring you a lot of
joy. I love the nods to your old Rivs, and to your childhood, when you got
your first bike, sized for someone a foot taller than you. Yet you’ve
always put on the Leah personalization. I’m looking forward to hearing how
it rides similarly and or differently than your 55 Platypus, since you PBH
you’re able to go to either size well. Many happy miles to you!
