[RBW] Platypus = Appaloosa/Atlantis?

2024-06-17 Thread esoterica etc

Hi folks,

I was browsing the RIv website and saw a statement that kinda caught me off
guard. Under the Current Models page, the description for the Platypus
reads, "Like an Appaloosa or Atlantis, but with a step through frame."

The impression of the Platypus that I've formed from reading the ride
reports and praises from those on this list, is that the Platypus is a
lighter and more nimble Country-type bike-- much closer to an AHH or Sam
Hillborne. But after seeing that blurb, it's implying that the Platypus is
more of a stouter fully-loaded touring bike, and also more capable of
off-road riding than the Country bikes are.

Can those who have experience with both the Platypus and Appaloosa/Atlantis
or AHH/Sam compare the ride qualities? I'm curious if folks think the Platy
feels closer to a loaded touring Riv or a Country Bike.

Mahalo,

Re: [RBW] Re: 55 cm Platypus on Amtrak

2024-06-17 Thread ascpgh
Leah, your ride report and experiences are charging me up now for my ride
today. My last few days have been out the door riding to work at 6am, home
between 8:30-9pm. I am guilty of NOT having everything prepped, loaded and
laid out this morning but I have a list I scrawled in moments I snatched
my attention away from the work at hand.

I caught a vacant night at an Air b&B I really like in Ohiopyle, PA that
coincides with a night that the restaurant nearby is open so I booked it.
I'll ride to the GAP from home and 80 miles along the Youghiogheny River to
the town in the state park for a relaxing evening. I've arrived in the town
on "off nights" to this wonderful hiking, biking, fishing, climbing,
whitewater rafting, canoeing and kayaking adventure town.

The biggest difference between my ride and Leah's will be the dearth of
people on the way. It's Monday (riding back Tuesday) and the western heat
dome is settling on us with mid to upper 90°s expected by noon. Except for
oddly scheduled through-riders I don't think I'll see many others out on
the trail. I have to pack with appreciationt of weather, safe water sources
and several 20 mile stretches that are simply out in the woods, off road,
along a nice river, where I will be solely responsible for food and drink,
sustained function of my bicycle and all contingencies.

Coffee's gone, I have to pack and Ike the wonder dog wants to look around
the neighborhood before I set out. Trying to get going super early to avoid
the heat won't be much of an aid, it's going to get hot but that also
stymies my classic lunch plan by rolling through that town too early.
Cheers to plenty of safe water and Nuun tabs!

Thanks for the report Leah! I am taking my bike on Amtrak from Albany to
Buffalo later this summer. This will be my first time taking a bike on the
train. A friend and I will ride back on the Erie Canal trail. I had planned
to ride my Sam Hillborne but you have me thinking why not take the Platy?
Gives me something to thing about.

It’s confusing because if you scroll down towards the bottom of the
homepage, and click on “Country Bikes” link, it lists the Homer, Sam and
Plat. I’ve never ridden one so I’ll let others chime in but I also thought
they marketed it as a country bike. But perhaps it blurs the line a bit

[RBW] Re: A PSA From Gordon Ramsay

2024-06-17 Thread Mathias Steiner
The logic here is sound. Wear a helmet all the time.

The issue is that the same logic applies to wearing a helmet while driving.
Most head injuries occur in car accidents. And then there's the home, slip
& falls etc. A biking buddy of mine slipped on ice and hit his head, had to
go to the hospital for a few days. No he wasn't wearing a helmet. Wasn't
cycling either. So what am I supposed to do, put on a helmet when I get up
in the morning?

I mix and match, and always wear it on group rides, which were the only
occasions I've crashed over the years.
To make matters more complicated, I seem to get more respect from, ah,
rural traffic when I'm wearing a ball cap. Strictly anecdotal, of course.

cheers -m

[RBW] Airline travel case recommendation

2024-06-17 Thread Bernard Duhon

Gang,
I'm looking for recommendations for airline travel case.
Hardshell?
Softshell?
Model?
Brand?

The case alone should weigh not too much above 20 pounds as my touring bike
with racks is pretty close to 30 pounds and I want to keep it under the airline
50 pound weight limit.

Yours sincerely,

Bernard F. Duhon

[RBW] Re: Platypus = Appaloosa/Atlantis?

2024-06-17 Thread DavidP
I'd guess that Riv liken it to the Appaloosa/Atlantis rather than the Sam
or Homer due to tire clearances. It'll clear 2.1s, most 2.2s, and some
2.25s.

Those tire clearances do make it pretty capable on dirt, but it's best on
mild trails. The Platypus frame page suggests it's "for mostly pavement
riding with loads from zero to 30 pounds". I assume the weight limit and
mostly pavement designation is largely due to the step-through frame
without Clem stout tubing.

Like most Rivs, where it falls on the spectrum of light and nimble vs tough
and capable depends a lot on how you build it - wheels and tires, handlebar
width, etc. Eben Weiss touches on this a bit in this look at how his
Platypus has evolved:
https://bikesnobnyc.com/2023/09/19/evolution-of-a-platypus/#more-20233

My Platypus has 50mm tires (GravelKing SKs measuring 2") and fenders, with
a light front rack and basket and is used as a cruisy allrounder. It's
great around town but also at home on mixed surface outings.

[RBW] Re: A PSA From Gordon Ramsay

2024-06-17 Thread Max S
Very nicely put, Mathias. I can relate my experiences with riding on city
streets, mountain biking, gravel riding, racing in crits, crashing in
various ways, *etc.*, but it's all borderline article-of-faith stuff,
anyway. While I used to wear a helmet on rides religiously between ages 15
and 30, at some point I started to get massive headaches after just a half
hour of doing so. I've tried many different shapes and brands, some costing
upward of $250, same thing. So, for the past 15+ years, I've taken to
riding mainly dirt roads and stopped wearing a helmet. My speed and
position haven't changed. I've noticed two main things: 1) I don't get
headaches from riding, and 2) more drivers give me greater courtesy /
respect than before.

I use a cardboard box in case I need to ditch it. I sometimes carry my
packing materials. Once I shuttled a guys luggage and bike box. The box
didn't seem great. The keystone piece was like the pizza box plastic thing
that kept the sides from collapsing. I use the rigid foam block for my
fork that came w/my bike from Riv. Make sure your box has something like
that.

Re: [RBW] Re: 55 cm Platypus on Amtrak

2024-06-17 Thread Pam Bikes
I've taken my train on Amtrak. The various regions operate differently.
Always call when in doubt. Their system is easier to tell what type of
bike service is available. I've been on the Empire Line, Northeast
Regional, Crescent, Carolinian, Palmetto. All in all, I've enjoyed it.
Let me know if I can ever help answer any questions. Last time I learned
that if you have a bike reservation on the NE regional, look for the bike
friendly sticker and those denote which cars have the bike hook. Not all
cars have them.

[RBW] Re: A PSA From Gordon Ramsay

2024-06-17 Thread tio ryan
Here's my helmet origin story, if anybody cares:

I got doored in July of 2011 (so I was told, no memory of the crash) and
spent 2 nights in the hospital. While recovering at home, I realized my
taste was altered and I no longer had *any* sense of smell. I saw
a neurologist, got a MRI, and was told this condition is called "anosmia"
and there was no treatment for it. However, it was possible my sense of
smell could someday return on its own. You might think that experience
would've scared me straight and I'd be a helmet-no-matter-what type of
rider, but alas. I did purchase my "dream" helmet after that crash, a
Catlike Compact, but I mostly wore it on my commutes to and from work. I
never wore a helmet when I was riding around for fun or going somewhere
other than the office — and I ride around nyc on a daily basis.

12 years later (still without a sense of smell) I had an eerily similar
situation where I was riding my bike and regained consciousness in the back
of an ambulance, confused what led me there. Once again, I was without a
helmet. I hit my head pretty good this time too, requiring stitches in my
forehead, as well as a fractured rib (ouch). I unfortunately did not regain
my sense of smell, but I felt lucky to survive another TBI. Since then,
I've purchased a few different helmets and I don't ride my bike without one
on my head, plus quality lights & reflective gear at night.

[RBW] Re: A PSA From Gordon Ramsay

2024-06-17 Thread Edwin W

The current advice (from doctors and public health types) seems to be
binary: always wear a helmet when biking, never wear a helmet when walking
or driving. That seems to be missing some nuance!

I would tweak it to say: consider a helmet when skiing fast, biking on
single track, or biking very fast in a tight pack with friends. But then
what about walking and driving (when most American TBIs happen)? Never? Not
even in the most dangerous conditions: night time, snowy, icy or wet roads?
Walking on ice or snow? No, it is quite safe, though when bad things
happen, it is bad.

[RBW] FS: Roadini 54 in Mermaid

2024-06-17 Thread Doug H.
This was a recent acquisition but I've decided to move on from it. Here are
the details:

Rivendell Roadini 54 Mermaid

·Velocity Dyad 36 spoke wheelset with Shimano 105 hubs 700c

·Velo Orange Crankset 175mm 48/34 chain rings

·Shimano XT 9 speed cassette

·Microshift front and rear derailleurs

·Shimano Dura Ace bar-end shifters

·Albatross HT handlebars

·Nitto 12cm stem

·Tektro long reach brake calipers with Shimano XT brake levers

·Kalloy seat post

·Berthoud leather saddle

·VO platform pedals

·VO Moderniste bottle cage

·SOMA Shikoro tires 38mm

Frameset is in excellent condition with no dings or dents. I’m willing to
ship and share cost within reason. For size reference, I am 5’10” with an
83 PBH and this size 54 fits great. For drop bars I would use a 5cm stem.
The photos show it with a dynamo setup which I plan to keep but if you'd
like it then we can talk price. $2,000 plus shipping (will share shipping
cost) I have nothing negative to say about the Roadini and its superb ride
quality. Circumstances can change quickly and a sale is needed.

[RBW] Riv Ride: Lakeshore Trail, Chicago, June 29

2024-06-17 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Friends,

People have been asking when we’re next gathering for another Riv Ride, and
summer is flying by. How about we squeeze in a ride on June 29th in Chicago
for a group ride on the Lakeshore Trail? We did do a Riv Ride last year
beginning in Evanston, but there is (so I hear) another 15 miles of gorgous
trail we did not ride yet.

Place: Chicago Lakeshore Trail, meeting spot to be announced later
Date: Saturday, June 29
Time: 10:00 am
Please let me know if you plan to come so we get an idea of a headcount.

Thanks,
Leah and Marc

[RBW] Re: Repaired Susie and Intro post

2024-06-17 Thread R. Alexis
Was wondering what happened to this frame. The original poster never
replied that I saw when I inquired about it way later. Your repair looks
good. Nice to see it rolling. Should get some Protovelo decals from
Rivendell and then paint it. There is that bike paint that Old Shovel
uses, https://spraybike.us/ that may work. Strip down or partial strip then
paint leaving the areas that have good paint still. Don't know if that
would work.

[RBW] Re: Platypus = Appaloosa/Atlantis?

2024-06-17 Thread esoterica etc

Thanks to everyone that's chimed in so far.

Hoch, thanks for muddying the waters even more now! And the fact that the
Platypus can fit larger tires than the Homer and Sam could definitely be a
reason for its association with the Atlantis/Appaloosa.

Dave, good point about how the build can really determine the temperament
of the bike. And Eben's post was a good read, thanks for the link.

Michael, thank you for the link to the Blue Lug video, had not seen that
before. It was really great to see the three of them discuss all the Riv
models and chart them accordingly. Super helpful.

If anyone has any first-hand comparisons, would love to hear about them.

Cheers,
