[RBW] Clem report: most free ever

2024-06-27 Thread Franco Rinaldi
I’m about a month into my Clem ownership. It’s the most free and fun I’ve ever
felt on a bike. Makes me not mind riding slow and soft pedaling. Can’t wait to
do an over nighter with it.

[RBW] Cliffhanger Squeal

2024-06-27 Thread John Rinker
Good evening,

I seem to remember some discussion from a while back about how Cliffhanger
rims don't seem to play well with KoolStop salmon pads. It seems the dual
compound pads are preferred. Am I remembering this correctly?

I've got a wheel set of Cliffhanger rims with un-machined sidewalls the run
between some Avid v-brakes with salmon pads. Despite clean rims and a
proper toe-in - perhaps too generous - the rims will often squeal like
banshees.

Any thoughts on how the banshees might be vanquished (silver bullet? stake
through the heart? Avada Kedavra?) would be appreciated.

I use the KoolStop smooth-post salmon pads with my Paul Neo-retros on my
Atlantis without issue, but these are with Dyad un-machined rims.

Cheers, John

2024-06-27 Thread Bill Lindsay
It's clear lots of people wanted a single speed Appaloosa or a single speed
Hunqapillar. It's natural for those people to be sad that Rivendell
offered a single speed A. Homer Hilsen instead. Those who wanted a single
speed A Homer Hilsen are presumably pleased.

I agree on this. I love single speeds, and the 3x1 flexibility looks fun,
and the 61.5m profile looks just right for me, but those long reach brakes
are a deal breaker for me. I've built bikes with them in the past, and
their stopping power in the wet is inadequate for me. Maybe the Riv guys
never ride across a section of wet grass and then need to stop for a road
crossing, but I have, and had some scares with these brakes.

[RBW] Re: powerbank charging of a phone

2024-06-27 Thread John Bokman
I'm trying an Anker Powerbank 30W with 10,000 mAh. Think I'll need to get a
slightly more powerful wall charger to be able to power up both the
powerbank and phone simultaneously. My Apple phone wall charger, at 20W
didn't charge the phone, only the powerbank.

Will see how it goes. But at $30 on sale, I figured I'd give it a shot.

You say something about weight and capacity being a trade off. How
much do you want it to weigh? How light is "doesn't matter anymore"?

I wonder how many they ordered of each iteration - with three colors and 5
sizes of frames and five sizes of completes, that could be up to something
like 150 bikes (frames and completes) if they got 5 of each iteration

I'm curious as to the demand for this bike. It's not JUST a single

[RBW] FS: 56cm Orange Rambouillet - SF Bay Area

2024-06-27 Thread Greg J
Hi friends,

I am looking to sell a 56cm early Rambouillet - with the pointy lugs and
orange color. I'm the original owner from 2002 or 2003, and my wife rode
it sparingly.

The only issue is a decent-sized dent in the top tube, which happened
around 2004-5, when another bike fell on it from a hook in the garage.
I've had it looked at and been told it's not a structural issue, merely
cosmetic. And we've had no issues with it since. Other than the dent,
it's in very good condition, with some scratches as would be expected but
nothing notable, with that brilliant orange paint still looking new.

I'm looking for $750 for the f/f/hs and ~$1250 for the bike depending on
the parts. Currently built up as a 1x10 with Shimano bar ends, but I could
also do a 3x9 Ultegra build.

We're selling it in order to buy a 54cm that became available, because I
always that it was a tad too big.

I'll have pics this weekend but please contact me off-list if you or anyone
you know is interested. I very much prefer a local sale so that I don't
have to worry about shipping it but will ship at cost (including
professional packing by a shop).

Thanks,
Greg

Hi Doug,

I can confirm that La Chouette (Paris) has a 52 in green right now. At
least their website says so, and they are usually pretty good about keeping
their stock up to date.

Of course, it's more expensive than buying direct from Riv and then there's
the whole issue of moving it from France to wherever you are located.

I am located in France, I work about 10 minutes from La Chouette, I confirm
that they are great and super helpful guys, and I'm happy to broker on your
behalf if you don't find an easier solution (i.e. a used 52 somewhere in
the US).

cheers,

[RBW] As Roaduno drops, a SimpleOne redo

2024-06-27 Thread Tom Allingham
As we await the RoadUno drop, I was repairing a SimpleOne build I did for
my youngest son some years ago. He rode it for a while, but then it was
stolen -- it was recovered, but there was a fair amount of damage. Anyway,
he recently asked me to help him get it back on the road, at minimal cost,
preferably with parts available from my shop.

Here's how it looked on the 2012 Riv Rally East, led by Bobby Birmingham:

https://flic.kr/p/bQ5xbZ

Racks, fenders and front brakes were all damaged, bar tape got torn up, one
pedal trashed -- it was a lot. But a much SIMPLER SimpleOne emerged from
the repair effort (though it's a bit funky, with a color riot on the front
end and a (possibly too classy) Berthoud bag on the rear). Anyway, here's
the new version, post cheapskate repair:

https://flic.kr/p/2pZKWEy

The "color riot" on the front end, featuring purple anodized Paul Cantis
and some crazy bar tape:

https://flic.kr/p/2pZJFSh

It was fun getting it back on the road!

You are more than welcome, Joel.

So, in a nutshell, you are trying to find a way to get your handlebar
 higher ? Right ?

After a long research on the internet, I found that long quill stem. I
was and remain very pleased with the outcome. I just couldn't cross the
threadless stem bridge as stubborn as I am from being old school. My bike
 would not look right.

Let me know what your decision choice is.

 Sincerely,
 Kim.
