Re: [RBW] Crankset Options and Understanding

2024-07-01 Thread Victor Hanson
don't think of it in crankset size, think of the tire size you want to
use. Anything over 45mm is mtn and requries a 52mm chainline. 38-44 is
the trick, this could be mt. but a lot of cross/gravel cranks. What
dirve train impacts the use. 32-35 is definite cross territory and
46-48mm chainline should work. Good luck

[RBW] Chicago-area Riv riders - North Shore Century

2024-07-01 Thread Ted Fay
If up for a casual (or not) ride from Evanston to parts north (25, 50,
metric Century, 100 miles to WI and back), this is a nice way to begin
winding down summer. This year's ride is Sept 15. I'll be out on my
Platypus. Hope to see you.

[RBW] Re: Where can I read try out a ton of different Rivendell models?

2024-07-01 Thread Anthony Davila
I've been riding a large Raleigh Cadent 1 which is a hybrid I bought in
2021. I attached a sizing chart!

Honestly, I started looking at flights to San Francisco and am leaning
towards taking a week vacation before the school year starts back up to go
try out some Rivendells. Do they usually have most models for test-riding
there? Excited to go out there and see what it's like! Also thanks for the
advice and stories Glenn and Jim.

Finding a local Rivendell owner is a good idea, and you should

 road
because you are saving up the money then my advice is to plan on being
patient twice. Be patient now while you are saving up the money and
 trying
to arrange your informal test ride stuff. The second round of being
patient will hinge on what is actually available for you to buy in the
summer of 2025. If you have your heart set on one particular thing, and
that thing isn't available, then you'll have to react to that situation.

Big picture, if it's possible, I think it's a good idea in 2024 to be
ready to react when the perfect bike presents itself to you. If a bike you
want to own is available, buy it, because it may not be available to you
later. That's easier said than done, particularly if your tastes are
 fluid.

[RBW] Re: Where can I read try out a ton of different Rivendell models?

2024-07-01 Thread Bill Lindsay
Do they usually have most models for test-riding there?

Riv Headquarters is several bays in an industrial park, big roll-up garage
space. One of the bays is the "showroom". There are usually about 20-25
built up demo bikes there. Those demo bikes usually represent what is
available right now and sometimes what is going to be available very soon.
Since the Leo Roadini is sold out in 54 and 57, I suspect they will not
have a 54cm or a 57cm demo Leo Roadini there for you to test ride. Call
them, and discuss what you are thinking about and they'll help you
formulate a strategy. Maybe they have a 57 Hillborne and can talk to you
about the subtle differences between a Hillborne and a Roadini. At least
one of the employees runs a Roadini, and they are usually generous with
letting customers ride their bikes.

[RBW] Re: Where can I read try out a ton of different Rivendell models?

2024-07-01 Thread Edwin W
Your strategy is good (since it was very similar to mine in 2010): read a
good bit about it, think about which bike you might get, go to Riv HQ (many
reasons to be in Northern California at some point, right?) and try some
out. You will enjoy the Rivendell ride quality (or your money back, haha)
and you will buy one used or new.
I had never spent that much on a bike before, despite owning many bikes. I
got my first Hillborne used, frame only, and they gentleman who sold it to
me gave me good advice: "the price isn't so bad if you always have one to
sell!"

[RBW] NYC based bike campers

2024-07-01 Thread Minh
Hi all,

I recently did a packratters organized bike camp, and realized how much I
enjoyed the quiet and being disconnected after a long ride (we went up to
Croton). I've been trying to find other opportunities to do it again, I
know about the 718 organized rides (its my local bike shop), but i've also
been trying to find a small group to organize semi-informally, both to
share the cost of the camp fees but also to have some backup during the
ride and onsite.

Are there folks in this group that do this already that would be open for a
singleton to join? Or are there a few people interested in trying to
arrange something? i'm old and slow, and won't stay up all nite drinking
beer at the campfire--though I will support you if you do! If we go to
Croton, I know a lady named Susan that bakes great pies, first one is on me!

Sorry Michael - I may have nicked that post accidentally. We had a few
weird ones pop up over the weekend.

To be very clear, I would not in any way trust them to be a legit source.

They are not a group member, so I suspect it's similar to the issues we had
with another random gmail account.

If someone sends you photos of an item but have no history of interacting
within this group, I personally would give it a hard pass. There are many,
many scammers floating around who can easily scrape appropriate images off
the web.

That does not ring a bell and if you type "tenere" into the search window,
only your post comes up. So that's suspicious. Do not send them money
until you lay out a transfer plan that protects you. There are several
ways to do that, but it that person is a scammer, they won't agree to any
of them.

[RBW] A general message about Scams, Scammers and recent techniques

2024-07-01 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey all -

As I'm sure you are aware, we have had some instances of non-group members
emailing members who have posted "wanting to buy" or "want to trade"
listings. These emails often have very good descriptions and contain very
believable photos.

They have largely been scam attempts. Other group members have recognized
images that were theirs or belonged to riding partners. These are
believable attempts and through the excitement of saving a few bucks or
getting a model which is currently unavailable, it would be very easy to
fall for the scam. And we do not fall for scams because we are stupid. We
fall for scams because we are human.

This is reason I have tightened the bottleneck for new members posting "For
Sale" items. If you haven't been an active member in any discussion, and
your first post is a "For Sale" listing, it will not be passed through. (I
had changed the group description to reflect that a number of weeks back.
And if you are a new member who wants to post some items for sale, I'm
happy to be convinced that you are completely legit. Reach out and let's
talk).

At this point, I am advising anyone who is approached via email to:
- Search the other person's email in the group archives, to see if they
have a track record of posting. If they have no posts, it's likely a scam.
- Search their email in the group member section, to see if they are
actually a member. If they are not a member, it's likely a scam.

If you do choose to proceed with any transaction, you do so at entirely
your risk. Due diligence and paying with a protected method are always good
practice.

And, yes, I do realize that there are a number of folks who have lurked on
this list for a number of years and may not have ever posted. So, the above
method is not foolproof. The vast majority of folks in this group are solid
citizens who act in good faith. I don't want to lose site of that.

Thanks for your contributions to this group.

[RBW] WTB: 54-56 Sam Hillborne (i think? my first riv!) but open to other Rivs

2024-07-01 Thread Jacob Yosowitz
I have admired Rivendell bikes since I first saw a homer parked outside of
my local food co op a few years back, set up with nitto albastache bars and
I thought what is THAT?! I was enthralled by the lugs, the thin steel road
like frame rocking fat tires, and the bars. love at first sight!

My current collection includes a lovely purple waterford road bike i
inherited from my grandpa, he had great taste. I love zipping around on
that no frills frame. And a '85 schwinn high sierra set up as a commuter. I
purchased it for touring but find it a bit unstable and wonky geometry for
long rides.

I'm ready to bite the bullet and purchase a rivendell. I think id be happy
on a Sam, I want something with a bit of zip, but still able to load up for
tours and exploration. I'm only 150lbs so i feel like i could get away with
a Sam for touring as opposed to one of the heavier more dedicated touring
models. Would love any input.

My pbh is 86 and I live in Maine right now, but willing to drive some
distance for the right bike. I'll be in chicago in mid july as well
visiting family, so can set something up there too.
Side note: I absolutely love the orange colorway on sam frames, thats my
dream bike! if you have one and are willing to part with it, you'd make me
a happy camper.

Look forward to hearing from you all!

[RBW] Re: WTB: 54-56 Sam Hillborne (i think? my first riv!) but open to other Rivs

2024-07-01 Thread Valerie Yates

about anyone who contacts you off list with a bike they are purporting to
sell.

Best,
Val in Boulder

[RBW] Re: NYC based bike campers

2024-07-01 Thread J
Helmets kids do camp outs in NY. https://www.instagram.com/helmet_kids/?
I've ridden with that crew a couple times when they came down to southern
PA for bike gatherings and they were solid. Plenty of Rivendells and Riv
adjacent bikes amongst them.
