[RBW] Re: Sam Build - Wish Me Luck!

2023-03-10 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks Paul, I really enjoy the Rivendell Ride. Building it has given me
an improved eye for detail, particularly when viewing other builds such as
Ted’s here. Ya know what my bike has it all over Ted’s in terms of
function and aesthetic?

Nothing!I gotta go back to the drawing board. Goodness!

[RBW] Re: Long ride on a Sam Hillborne

2023-03-07 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Great ride Paul. If I may inquire, what handlebars are you using? They
appear to have more flare than my Albatross. If I make a switch to
thumbies, your set up appears ideal - love the Ergons.

I live in "The Town of Murals". They make for wonderful photo backdrops,
and only 3 miles away! But I like your thinking. The photo is far better
to have been earned.

Re: [RBW] WTB/WTT – Huret Jubilee Long Cage Rear Derailleur

2023-02-13 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have an early 90s RB-1 with 28s on it, and you can barely see the light
of day between the rubber and the frame. Anything much larger is a no-go
without some chainstay mods and a switch to 650s on that frame. That
Jubilee sure is purty though!

Re: [RBW] Seat Post Slippage

2023-01-26 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
I did swap my stem out for a Nitto, but did not have issues with slippage
for the few miles of shake-down use on my new Sam. It also held the bike
for it's build, but that is no real test. I left the binding bolt stone
dry as it is a nylock. This is not an area where I wanted to over-torque
and torque specs are generally fairly low for the post due to the surface
area involved. I use anti-seize on the post, and the frame has a ton of
anti-corrosion goo, so it's pretty slippery in there.

Here is what my Sam Gap look like for comparisons.

 Hi all — I just finished up a build, it's a 1985 Bridgestone MB-2. I
have a full build video up over here: https://youtu.be/gJPnbpzjbKg

I purchased the bike as a complete from Marketplace, it was stock but
for the saddle and tires. Everything was removed and I passed the frame
over to Rob Gassie at Bing Bicycles. He added some rack mounts to the fork
and seat stays, changes some the cable guides, added a third bottle boss
 to
the downtube and two additional bottle bosses to the underside. He also
stripped the frame to raw steel.

Instead of paint I went for a raw finish. There are two applications of
patination acids, with and without heat, followed by clear lacquer and
 wax.

It's built up with a mix of parts from across time, all silver.
De-anodized some black Paul cantilevers and also de-anodized an XTR
RD-M952. Dead stock WTB grease guard headset purchased from Jacque Phelan.
Lots of Suntour, some TA cranks and modern parts from Japan. Crust x Nitto
Shaka bars, MKS bear trap pedals, Nitto cable hanger.

I had some custom brass headbadges made with the old Bridgestone logo
 which I shaped and finished.

Velocity Atlas 26" wheelset with a Kasai dynamo hub up front and an XTR
M900 in the rear. Front wheel by Rich at Rivendell, rear built by Andre at
my local bike shop. I'm running Rene Herse extra-light tires with a Rat
Trap Pass in the back and a Humptulips Ridge in front.

Many thanks to members here for helping out with parts when I needed

Hi David, yes I did. Jess (of Tunitas) directed me to the Obento after I
inquired what that beautiful rack was on her bike pictured on the Riv
site. Sadly, not the same aesthetic as the Potluck. Similar function
though.

have a hammer around here somewhere.

If I blow it, you'll never hear from me again. If it rolls fast and

Ted - that beautiful Lime Olive color almost had be buying two Sams! Yours
will be really sharp with the brass. Please share some pics once done.

Eric - Good eye on the derailer! I admit I wanted the silver body more
than the low-normal function, but am excited to try it. I found the
housing at Crust. That is some stout stuff, my cable cutters are
terrified. My triangle is a keeper, but thanks for the offer. Not a lot
of reflective properties though, more cute than safe.

Thanks all for the encouragement. Counting down to the last box arrival
this week.

Ping me your addy, and one spanking new Riv tealish-blue lugged bandana

believe Frame Saver is preferred.

If there was an award for box recognition, you would have won it! How

Hi Kim,

Good eye! I'll try my Albatross bar that never worked with my RB-1 and
replace the original drops. I feel like I will end up with something like
a Nitto X Crumbworks bar (I'm a distance motorcyclist - love the palms-down
hand position) but need to put some (s)miles on the Sam before figuring
that out.

Re: [RBW] Saddle height and BPH

2022-12-14 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Thanks (thank you, thank you) for bringing attention to the the Catalyst
pedal - I think it will be a godsend for me. I deal with an injury related
neuropathy in my left calf muscle which prevents me from doing things like
a tippy toe on that side. Had to sell my pristine manual ‘07 Honda S2000
as I could no longer use the clutch safely - a tragedy! Being able to
incorporate more of my foot on the pedal will be wonderful as I half-foot
my left pedal now and it is a struggle. I measure to a 76cm saddle height
based on PBH, but it runs closer to 70cm in actual use. Not ideal, but
better than siting on the couch.

With a new Sam ordered, I now think I will now request the smaller 170MM
crank as part of the build to help balance things out.

Sure glad I found this group!

Nice Drew. I nabbed a 54cm Silver as well. Already spoke with Vince.
Since their parts bin is deeper than mine I am going to have them build it
up and leave my RB-1 shiny bits where they are. #2 in line. Someone out
there is faaat. :-)

When I test rode one of the originals with caliper brakes, it was

2022-12-05 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Let's hope Wednesday proves to be a great day for all those interested!
I've studied the size charts and glad I did. I have a 59cm RB-1 which fits
fine, yet the 57cm Sam has a higher standover. The charts put me on a 54
Sam. These bikes have a big front end! Save a Silver one for me, please.

[RBW] New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-01 Thread 'Slacky Mac' via RBW Owners Bunch
Anxiously awaiting the new Sams to land on our shores and am obsessing over
the potential build. Perusing these pages with all of your experiences
have really helped. I thought the lime olive was for me until I saw the
early photos of the HiHo Silver. Smitten.

Anyone going in on these? I feel like I am on baby watch!

Ride Report: Hawksbill Slope Cabin Overnighter

 14-15 November 2022
 64 miles, 7,250 ft elevation

This summer and early fall passed without any camping or overnight
trips by bicycle. So a series of rides and ideas came together and I
 booked
a primitive cabin for Monday night, earlier this week. I decided to make a
loop of some fire roads I checked out in September with a stop for the
night in the middle. Once I made the reservation I reached out to Paul R.
to see if he’d like to join. To my surprise he was game for a Monday night
 out.

Temperatures Monday were predicted to peak in the high 40s and dip down
well below freezing up on the mountain where we’d be staying. Rain and
 snow
were in the cards for our return on Tuesday and warming up to 38º. With
 bad
weather and short days in mind we met at the cracking hour of 11:00 AM. We
would have preferred to start earlier but obligations sometimes call for a
late start or no start at all. I unloaded my Appaloosa and did a final
check of my luggage and gear. Paul arrived with his XL Susie Longbolts
shoved in the back seat of his Honda. Even with the front wheel removed
 the
wheelbase barely allowed the back doors to close. By 11:50 we were on our
way, with temperatures comfortably in the high 40s.

The first eight miles took us through beautiful rolling countryside
with cattle grazing, old brick houses on hills and the last rusty brown
vestiges of crumbling foliage. We were on a mix of pavement and
well-maintained gravel roads. The route took us through a neighborhood of
small beautiful farms on a road that runs parallel to a stream. The road
continued on in a way that felt like trespassing as we rode between barns,
over corn and soy fields, past a tractor shed and through fields cut for
 hay.

Next we turned onto a painted highway with a posted speed of 45mph and
rode along for about two miles. During our first day this was our only
stretch of riding with paint on the road. We skirted around a mountain and
had our first fun and short descent on a twisty paved road. We pulled into
a neighborhood of old apple-packing warehouses and a convenience store
 with
a deli, likely a good place to stop, according to Paul who ran inside.
 Bulk
candy, camping goods, deli sandwiches and the rest. We surveyed a few bins
full of local apples that were stationed out on the road. I found my local
favorite, the Black Twig and we got

It's a 1991. I made a poor attempt at Riv-izing it, but the geometry isn't
going to cooperate. Converting to a fixed is interesting, though I think I
will keep it together and replace the original drops/brake levers/ and
Avocet saddle which I have. It was more comfortable in original form,
though the Roly-Polys are staying on. The modern hub spacing on the Rivs
is there for a reason, I might as well let them build one for me.

Hi all, first post, warm greetings.

I have a super nice RB-1 which is too racy for my desires. I have long
been looking at a new Rivendell Hillborne or Appaloosa. I would love to
use my RB-1 parts on it if they will fit. No worries about over gearing
 as
 I am in Florida.

Shimano 600 derailleur, Sugino DGX crank 40/52, Shimano 13/25 cassette,
and Shimano RX-100 hubs, Ritchey stem, Wolber 700c 32H wheels. I have an
Albatross bar, Dia Compe MTB levers and a Brooks B-17 that will transfer
 over.

Will the rest of it fit?

I could turn the RB-1 into a fixed gear rig just for occasional
punishment. I'm not inclined to sell it.

 Thanks!
