[RBW] Re: [RBW Stolen Sam Hillborne
I took the decals off of my rivendell quickbeam. It didn't have the cream head tube, so it was just a solid green bike, with only the head badge and it didn't look that different from any other older bike out there. Lots of people asked me how old it was assuming I had repainted an old frame. Sometimes I would see an Atlantis or other riv and even they wouldn't notice I was on a quickbeam a lot of the time. I'm just saying that you can still ride a nice bike in a high crime area and keep it just a bit plainer and keep it under the radar. I didn't have any phil wood hubs or lighting hub dynamo setups or anything that would make it stand out. [RBW] WTT some rivish parts
Hi, I'm in a bit of a financial low point and I just found a giant crack in my rear mountain bike rim. I suppose that I'm very lucky that it didn't fail completely. I use my bike to transport my daughter and I could feel that it was out of true, but when I went to put the spoke wrench on it I found the spoke pulling through a giant crack. Yikes. So, I'm hoping someone out there in the SF bay area might have a decent or better rear mountain bike wheel that's a rim brake, 26 135mm o l d that they might want to give to me or trade for something. I'm financially tight at the moment, so ideally a trade would be best. (I'm willing to come get it or pay for shipping if it's not local) Ironically I have a brand new 700c velocity dyad wheel with an sturmey S3X and 36 spokes that I bought for my rivendell quickbeam (I sold the quickbeam a few months ago and have only one bike at the moment.) It could come with an old patched tube and decent tire (it's a new tire, vittoria or something) or not. I also have 2 nitto stems, one dirt drop and one technomic deluxe that are fully functional but definitely a bit scratched up (the dirt drop is more scratched up) and a black brooks b-73 mounted on a simple kalloy seat post (27.2mm) that is in good to decent shapeperhaps a tiny amount of rust on the rails. I also have an old but fully functional 700c front wheel with 36 spokes and I have the front hub only of my quickbeam's stock wheelset. It's in good shape if anyone wants it as a backup or whatever. I'll also sell any of these items if anyone is interested, make me an offer, I'll consider anything. Thanks. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] WTT some rivish parts
I guess I missed giving you the size, I just measured them from the center of the bolt to the center of the handlebar (is that where they are measured from). The nitto technomic deluxe is 3.25 inches. The dirt drop is 2.75 measured the same way. On Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 8:40:49 AM UTC-7, atomway wrote: Hi John. What size are your two stems? [RBW] Re: Best Riv for rear child seat?
For years I used a quickbeam with a rear child seat it worked well in the smaller gear for most riding. I alternated it between a trek 620 with gears, for more long distance rides. When my daughter was younger we used a front mount seat on the trek, I used a nitto dirt drop stem to get the bars up higher than normal for that seat. It was more interactive but she did outgrow it. The GMG-911 dutch child seat can be put on and removed in seconds from fairly standard rear racks and could be switched from bike to bike easily. john On Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 10:26:27 PM UTC-7, Daniel Jackson wrote: what frame do you all think would be best for a bike built specifically for this purpose? [RBW] Re: Bosco/Albatross Aluminum Vs Chromoly
Thanks for the responses. I've always felt like the albatross bars flex very slightly and while it never bothered me, if I had a choice I would eliminate it. But not by switching away from the albatross back to moustache. So I've wondered about switching to alba aluminum. It would seem that there would be little difference there, so I'll skip it. On Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 2:33:47 AM UTC-7, Joe Bernard wrote: I've used both versions of Alba..they feel the same to me. I've also ridden lots of Moustache bars and would agree that they have a stiffer feel, like the steering input from hands to contact patch is more direct. I suspect this is due more to shape/length than material: Albas are wider, with a long reach back to where your hands normally rest. The more space you have between the grip area and stem, the more likely you'll get some flex from that long lever. Re: [RBW] FS Sturmey Archer S3X and other bits
Honestly I bought it, and then I did a bunch of single speed riding on my quickbeam. Then I thought I would set it up, so I took the other wheel off and started setting up the cable and I think I broke some spokes on my other bike, or something distracting, so I put the single speed wheel back on the quickbeam. and began riding it as my commuter again and now it's more than a year later and I've never made the time to install it. I literally never ever tried it. [RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle Repair - Broken Tension Shackle
Hi Sean, I'm just a home mechanic, and I've done it. It really wasn't that hard. I replaced the entire leather top with some saddle leather that I cut and shaped and it's worked out really well. I put it together with brass screws and nuts and honestly it's worked great for 6 months like that, but I bought the copper rivets (which come in a box of 100 or more) I always intended to finish with the rivets. I don't think that's the hardest part, I've just been busy and it's so comfortable that I don't want to stop using it. In fact if you feel overwhelmed I might be willing to do it with you or for you...if you are in the bay area. did the bolt brake? if the leather is still attached well to the nose piece you might be able to replace the bolt without removing all the rivets. Do you have photos of the problem.? john On Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 4:48:49 PM UTC-7, SeanMac wrote: As I was heading out the door for my bike ride yesterday afternoon I realized that there was a problem with my much loved Brooks Swift (titanium) saddle. I put my hand on the top of the saddle and noticed an unusual amount of flex. Upon closer inspection, it was obvious that something was wrong. It turns out that part of the tension shackle, the part that connects the nose of the saddle to the saddle frame, had broken. Bummer. The saddle has at least 12,000 miles, and the leather is in great shape, so I want to have this problem fixed. A new tension shackle can be obtained very inexpensively (only $3.50 for the chromed steel version). However, as I have never carried out this repair, I am looking for some guidance / encouragement / advice. A quick internet search turned up a few good tidbits, but I'm hoping for some help here from the experts. Is this a relatively easy repair that a mechanic with limited skills can complete or would I be much better off shipping the saddle to a qualified repair expert? If this is not a home mechanic job, I would appreciate advice on where to have it fixed - ideally in the USA. I've committed the sin of removing the decals as well. I'm taking it in tomorrow to get it tuned up and cleaned up a bit and I'll post more photos as soon as it gets back. It does have a few nicks in the paint, but nothing more than that. I'm thinking between $1000-1200 ish but I am open to offers. If no one is interested I'll probably list it on craigslist in a week or two. I live in San Francisco and I would prefer to sell to someone in the region, but I wouldn't completely rule out shipping for the right situation. Thanks PS: I also have an sturmey archer S3X wheel that is not on the bike. I honestly never used it or set it up, but I do have the bar end shifter, cable and other bits. The rim is a velocity dyad if that makes any difference. This could go with the bike, or perhaps be sold separately depending on interest. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: FS Quickbeam 54cm
Anyone want to make an offer on this bike. I'm ready to consider shipping it or selling just the frame and forks for those who've asked me that in the past. Thanks. I bought it new as a frame and fork, but it's pretty close to stock. It has a set of stock quickbeam wheels that I bought from someone who modified their quickbeam to 650b. It has a phil wood bottom bracket that was rebuilt at phil wood just before I installed it. At the moment it has an old no name saddle as Ive been working on recovering the brooks saddle that was on it. I could include the brooks if anyone is interested in a recovered saddle. [RBW] Re: Flipped Albatross
I have 2 bikes set up this way. I don't have an albastache to compare it to, but I do like it. I also use road brake levers on the bars. I've heard of it multiple times on the internet as well. though I'm not sure that's very helpful information. On Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at 7:22:40 AM UTC-7, Surlyprof wrote: I have been wanting to change out the cockpit from the Albatross that came with the bike to an Albastache. I used to have a Mustache bar and loved it. Unfortunately, the discretionary funds are not there right now (home repairs, etc). As a temporary measure, I thought about flipping the Albatross bar over to see if I could get in the ballpark. Was hoping to squeeze in a summer of Albastache-ish riding before having to plunk down the money for a real setup since bars, levers and stem come to over $200. My initial measurements indicate that the drop would be about an inch lower (similar to the old mustache bars I used to have) and the handles would come back about an extra inch (potential problem with bar ends and knees). Has anyone ever tried this? If so, please let me know if it is a reasonable alternative or just a big waste of time. [RBW] Re: FS Riv ish Trek 620, 1985 blue with long chainstays. $400
This bike is sold, thanks. On Sunday, March 1, 2015 at 9:14:54 AM UTC-8, john elliott wrote: I've had this blue trek 620 for a while, it's been my daily rider for at least the last year.$400. [RBW] Brooks Saddle Leather replacement
Has anyone on this list ever replaced the leather on a brooks saddle. I'm riding on a 90 percent finished recovered saddle. I haven't finished the final trim and it's installed with brass bolts and nuts instead of rivets. It turned out better than expected in terms of comfort. I haven't finished it because I cannot live with my other seat for even a few days. I'm about to put in the rivets, but I'm not sure what to use for the back of the rivets to give them the right shape. Maybe another hammer... any thoughts would be appreciated. PS: Anyone have a brooks with trashed leather they want to donate? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Klean Kanteen Conversion Questons
I've never cooked with one of these bottles, but if I make a coffee and fill my insulated bottle up to the top and seal it, I have good luck with it being hot for a long time. At least 8 hours, and if you don't drink half of it, I think it lasts longer. It would be at least warm the next morning. They work great on hot days too. I throw a few ice cubes in and they are still banging around in there on a hot day hours later. I can usually refill from my uninsulated bottle and reuse the ice. On Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 7:08:39 AM UTC-8, Deacon Patrick wrote: What is your experience with insulated/uninsulated Klean Kanteen bottles. Has anyone used the insulated as a camping mug? Used the single-walled one as your water boiling pot? Carried a 40 or 64 oz one in the velcro on/Irish strap secured cage manner? More details: I am now converting to using Klean Kanteen bottles (from the “glass” lined things Specialized makes) after 2/3rd of my bottles popped out of my standard cages last fall and I need to replace then anyway, as well as hearing the reports from folks here of how much better Iris cages hold bottles on trails, washboard, etc. Between insulated and single-walled, and the larger bottles there seem to be some great options for various uses., I’m thinking: (1) insulated 20 oz. bottle: mostly to help keep things cool in summer (I drink very little when it’s below freezing, and so seldom that it would be frozen anyway on a longer ride, without being inside my jacket. Also as my coffee/tea mug when bikepacking. (2) uninsulated 28 oz. bottle: for daily ride increased volume of capacity, and for boiling water over the firebox when bikepacking. (1) uninsulated 40 or 64 oz. with velcro on cage using Irish straps to secure it for bikepacking and extra water capacity. Suggestions on wear to strap this beastie? On the Hunqapillar, this gives me up to 76 oz. for daily rides, 140 oz. capacity for bikepacking (plus a 100 oz bladder if needed, but it’s hard to use and tastes plasticy.) Thoughts, suggestions?
