[RBW] WTB: Ruffy Tuffy Tires

2014-09-17 Thread Adam DeFayette
Hello good people,

Can someone cut me a deal on some Ruffy Tuffy tires, lightly used or new?
I'm very broke right now, but not so much that I'm going to turn my back on
tire quality. I can pay, just can't afford to order new. My Schwalbe
Marathon rear tire is falling apart after about 1000 miles of gentle road
use, to my great dismay - the sidewall is separating, and there's a scary
bulge that gets a little bigger every time I ride.

Maybe I have something you want - I have some nice parts lying around:
new Tektro Big Mouth brakes, a new Sugino triple crank, and a bunch of
other stuff.

Let me know if you can make a deal,

Adam!

Four Wool Jerseys, Three Pairs Wool Shorts, Two Pair Wool Knickers, One

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Roadeo 59cm; Phil Wood, Nitto, Sugino, Brooks, etc.

2014-01-05 Thread Adam DeFayette
$3750; price includes professional packing & shipping.

Pictures:
https://plus.google.com/photos/101616295581563373309/albums/5965472136228528865

This is a very lightly used "Quickbeam Green" Roadeo. I purchased this from
the first run of Roadeos, and only road it a few hundred miles over the
last few summers in Upstate New York. This green/cream-colored frame is
offset with lots of antique brown leather, and nickel-colored components.
The overall effect is very beautiful; one of my best designed bikes, and
I'm sorry to have to sell it. Why I'm selling? My wife and I are are
expecting a child soon, and I am liquidating my stuff so that we can put
away some savings. I will miss this bike, and really wish that I had ridden
it more.

Everything is in "like-new" condition. There are a couple tiny scratches
in the paint, and I have pictured them - nothing serious or very
noticeable, and certainly no dents. Honestly, I did not even notice them
until looking the bike over for sale. The frame was treated with T9 per
Rivendell's method. Estimated value new is upwards of $4750. Save yourself
a grand, and the wait time!

I have included pictures from various times in the bike's life - the most
recent pictures are the indoors series against the brick wall.

Components: (Prices are mostly current Riv Prices)

Brooks B17 Narrow Saddle ($108) [great condition, hardly broken-in]
Tange-Levin Headset ($60)
Nitto S-83 Seat Post ($97)
Brooks Challenge Seat Bag ($90)
Shimano Tiagra Brakes & Levers ($110)
Two (2) King Bottle Cages ($36)
Nitto Technomic Stem 10cm ($50)
Silver Shifters ($78)
Phil Wood Bottom Bracket ($138)
Wheels: Phil Hubs (Freewheel) laced with DT Competition Double-Butted
Spokes to Velocity Aerohead Rims ($700)
Challenge Parigi/Roubaix 23mm Tires ($150)
Sugino "Mighty Tour" Crankset, 170mm, 34/50T ($300)
Shimano Freewheel 7spd, 13-28 F($20)
Nitto 42cm 'Dream' Handlebar ($80)
Campagnolo Mirage Front Deraileur ($50)
Shimano XT Rear Derailleur ($100)
VP Thin Gripster Pedals ($67)

Lots of Extras: Blinkies, Schwalbe Tubes, Cateye Strada Cyclometer, Soma
mini-pump, Brass Bell, VO Skewers, Leather Bar Tape, Cables & Housing
($100-$200)

[RBW] Re: building wheels

2011-04-11 Thread Adam DeFayette
Jason,

I've built a couple sets of wheels now, and relied on both the Brandt
and Brown descriptions/instructions. I think you can pass on the the
Brandt book if you're just looking to build wheels, rather than
understand all the physics of what's going on.

That said, I found this guy's videos to be EXTREMELY helpful:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXpxmqEaxb0

That's not the first video in the series, but it gives an idea of what
each is like. He explains things very well, and you just can't beat
actually watching a skilled mechanic assemble a wheel.

Give yourself plenty of time, and take lots of breaks. Enjoy - it
really is a fun process and something you can be proud of when you're
out on the road.

[RBW] FS: Brooks Pro - Alp D'Huez Edition

2010-09-06 Thread Adam DeFayette
Like new, $110 postage paid. PayPal only.

Over the years I have experimented with many different Brooks Saddles,
and must now definitively say that the B-17 is the only appropriate
shape for my particular anatomy.

This is a bummer because this Brooks Pro Alp D'Huez is just about the
snazziest I've ever seen. Unfortunately I must elevate comfort over
aesthetics.

Here are the details:
http://www.wallbike.com/~billlain/brooks/teampro/alped%27huez.html

Mine is pictured here: http://picasaweb.google.com/adam.defayette/BrooksPro#

Approximately 300 miles on it, and in perfect condition with no
abrasions or scratches. Applied one coat of proof-ride; still hardly
broken-in.

Asking $110, Priority Postage Paid anywhere in the continental U.S. I
would also be interested in a trade if anyone has a newish Honey B-17
Special available.

Comes with spanner. I'll ship immediately.

[RBW] Re: Reading Chairs

2010-02-10 Thread Adam DeFayette
Thank you to everyone for the great suggestions - I feel confident
that I'm on the right path now.

I sourced a knock-off (imposter) Eames Lounge Chair from the 1970s,
local and used - but it's currently on Ebay for $500. I'm going to
hold out and try to get it for $300. Otherwise I'm gonna check out the
Ikea chair and the Flight Chair (which looks amazing).

I like the womb chair too, but price became a factor when I saw how
much they go for. Anyone have any idea how the $700 knock-off version
feels?

[RBW] Reading Chairs

2010-02-10 Thread Adam DeFayette
Okay, so this is definitely off topic - but I am turning to this list
because I know it to be full of intelligent people interested in
quality of life issues and comfort. That said, please indulge me

I'm looking for a new reading chair. Are there any legendary chairs
out there, known for comfort, ergonomics, design? I'm not sure where
to start. I am open to all suggestions - price not currently an
object.

Thanks.

[RBW] Re: "Quickbeam Green" Roadeo - pictures

2010-01-26 Thread Adam DeFayette
Yeah - shellaced "tan cork" indeed. The shellac was made with the
amber flakes that VO sells - I find that to be a much better quality
than the pre-mixed stuff.

I didn't like the look of the tape much until the 6 or 7th coat, and
then I understood what other folks have been saying - it's gorgeous.
And for $12, a better all-around choice than leather bartape (which I
have gone with on past builds).

Rivendell stock - I believe Tange Levin - the unsealed one, which I
suppose is fine as this bike will never see a rainy day.

[RBW] Re: "Quickbeam Green" Roadeo - pictures

2010-01-24 Thread Adam DeFayette
Sorry - that link was to a picture and not the album, here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/adam.defayette/RivendellRoadeo?feat=directlink

The tires (Challenge Parigi-Roubaix) are sold as a 27 and look like a
27 to me but I haven't measured.

They feel great - the whole bike does. I had this fear throughout the
assembly that the bike wouldn't fit - Rivendell had me going with a 57
based on their measurement system, but I instead went with a 59
(closer to what I am used to riding - I'm 6 '2 - and it seems
perfect.

Can't wait to to get this bike seriously out on the road in the
Spring.

2010-01-23 Thread Adam DeFayette
Check it out:

Just finished wheel-build and assembly.

Standard Riv-parts, except for the stem and handlebars which I
salvaged from a 1981 Raleigh SuperGrandPrix.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Teaser

2009-11-27 Thread Adam DeFayette
Has anyone else had any follow-up from Rivendell from the time they
first put a deposit down? I placed my deposit immediately after the
Roadeo debuted on the site, but have not heard a peep since.

[RBW] Re: Roadeo art

2009-10-28 Thread Adam DeFayette

You can pick any color you want, except for cream. The "Roadeo" page
has said this since day 1, but there seems to be considerable
confusion out there:

"Graphical & Other Optionals

   1. White with red accents.
   2. White with blue accents
   3. Any color that goes well with cream, with cream accents. That
rules out white and cream, but not much else. "

I am going with Quickbeam Green myself.

And going complete Dura-Ace for the build (accept for the short-reach
brakes (which I don't think will fit the frame) and choosing bar end
over brifter)
