Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Appaloosa thread

2021-09-08 Thread Addison Quarles
I don't have a copy yet (a friend sent me this photo), but as soon as I get
one I will post a snap of it. Pretty sure it's an article about why my
little town is so great and they took photos of a few local businesses as
sort of a snap shot of life here. IIRC the photographer came by on my day
off so I don't think I was technically "on the clock" but you can bet I
made sure the prettiest bike in the room was in the stand when she was
shooting! (my brakes needed adjusting anyway...)
P.S. I will happily accept "Raddison"!

Re: [RBW] Cycles Grand Bois Centerpulls vs Tektro R559

2021-08-24 Thread Addison Quarles
I find it so interesting that there are such polarized experiences with the
Tektro r559; one normally only sees this gulf when looking at obscure tech
from days long gone, but in this case it’s regarding a component you can
still “walk” to the “store” and buy. What are the variables we’re missing
here? Are the naysayers 6’4”, 220lbs and running stock brake pads? Those in
favor 5’6”, 140lbs with Kool Stops?
I for one love the r559; I’ve got them on my (very upright) commuter with
compression-less housing, Kool Stop inserts and flexy little Tektro levers
and I’m certain I could go ass-over-tea kettle if I grabbed a handful of
brake without care. The bike runs very wide, polished rims and increasingly
slick Gravel Kings.
In the name of science, I am 5’8” and about 150lbs

Re: [RBW] Re: Share More Riv Riding Pics

2021-08-05 Thread Addison Quarles
I was able to solve this same problem with a couple of presta valve “nuts”
under the bottle cage to space it out jst enough to clear the cable
while using the same bottle cage bolts. The presta valve nut as a spacer is
by no means a new concept, but I can’t help but marvel at their
versatility; it’s safe to say that they solve a problem for me at least
once a week.

Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Appaloosa thread

2021-06-19 Thread Addison Quarles
Thank you! I’ve spent a lot of time/mental RAM on the component choice
(trying for equal parts of form and function) so I’m very happy it came out
riding just as beautifully as it looks.
The bars are the Velo Orange Granola Bar mounted to their two bolt (31.8)
stem. I’ll be trying these for a week and then giving a pair of the
narrower bullmoose Bosco bars a try. I’m pretty sure I know which I will
like more, but I’m also considering flaring the Bosco’s so they have the
same profile as the Granola without being so noodly. The flatness of the
Granola bar makes it a lot more versatile in terms of usable real estate;
the drop off on the Bosco makes for only one truly firm hand position.
Oh, and the rack is the Nitto 32r. I think they called it the “medium big
rack” or something like that. It seems to be discontinued, as all of the
similar racks I’ve found lack the pannier rails below the platform.
Mr Jason Bombadil himself has the same rack on his beautiful unpainted
masterpiece, which informed my purchase as his was the only photo I could
find of one mounted on a bike.
Sorry I’m so blabby; I’m still in the overly excitable phase with this bike
(bought it last week and only finished building it less than 24 hours ago)
so thank you for baring with me!

Okay okay, you guys told me what I wanted to hear.
A Kasai FS hub and my big ol' squishy tires will be showing up tomorrow. I
might swing for a SON someday, but this little guy should be more than
sufficient for my "needs"
Looking like I'll be able to ride it home from work on Sunday!
You know where to find me, Collin. At the very least I owe you a test ride!

Kushan, I made off with a 54cm Mermaid and will be building it as a long
distance, mostly paved touring rig. It’ll have big puffy tires, a heaving
saddle bag, a legendary range of gears, and am trying to talk myself into

Built the rear wheel tonight, will have the front wheel built once I make

[RBW] Re: Question for people who have ridden Compass/Rene Hearse tires

2021-06-12 Thread Addison Quarles
What kind of noise are the tires making? Like a rubber skooching on a slick
floor sound?
The closest to the Antelope Hill that I've ridden is the Switchback Hill,
which is 650b x 48mm. I've had them on three bikes over the years and would
regularly pump them up to around 45-50psi once a month and not top off for
another month so by the time I remembered to reinflate they would be down
to around 20psi. This was in part due to negligence, but was also sort of a
running experiment to see how the bike handled at different tire pressures.
I didn't keep very good notes during this highly scientific study, but I do
remember that by the 3 week mark the bike would dive into turns in a real
scary way, perhaps something like you're experiencing with the self-steer.
At higher pressures I never felt any handling anomalies, but maybe that's
because I tended towards higher pressures.
Have you considered bumping up to 50-55 psi? I imagine what you're feeling
is that big ol' tire flopping over onto its side, bumping the steering one
way or the other. My last Switchback Hill bike had 55mm rims and the think
tracked like a freight train with no tire flop at all.
Best of luck!

Re: [RBW] Re: 2021 Appaloosa thread

2021-06-11 Thread Addison Quarles
I'm really curious to see how fast this batch sells. All of the excitement
sure seems to suggest that they're going to be gone in a flash! I'm so
plagued by anxiety of missing out on stuff I can hardly bear to shop online
for things anymore, though I've missed out on the Sim Works Bubbly pedals
every time they've popped up and I can't seem to stop crawling back to
them.
Oh Jason, you (and everyone else) can call me Addison; I'd assumed my name
displayed in the thread, but maybe I need to change a setting or something.
This will be my first Riv and will be rounding out my quiver quite nicely.
Nothing I have right now will clear such a monstrous tire and I can't
imagine I'll ever want to go on a ride that it can't handle, so between it
and my two other main squeezes I might be able to resist buying (and
keeping) another bike for some time.
All the best,
-Addison

I'm so excited by this color! I saw it in person on Tuesday and can't stop
staring at the photos I took (though I'm glad Crust posted some, because
mine are kind of awful)
I rode an employee's around Walnut Creek for 45 minutes or so and then rode
Grant's around the parking lot; both bikes couldn't have felt more
different, and the fact that they're (essentially) the same frame marked
just the versatility I'm after. Looking forward to having a Riv of my very
own!
It's also really nice to hear that a chunk of their sales will be going to
Pine Ridge. It sort of puts a finer point on "voting with your dollar"
By the way Jason, your bike almost sent me into a Bombadil quest like no
other, but have decided I want to experience this long chainstay madness.

Re: [RBW] rando, kiddo riding partners around Sacramento & northern California

2021-06-04 Thread Addison Quarles
Clark! I am in Sacramento and am currently nursing a bum wrist, but it
ought to be all healed up by the time I'm finished building my Appaloosa.
Do you ride the ARP much? That's where most of my riding is done these
days, as working sixty hour weeks doesn't leave much time for skipping
town. I do endeavor to get out and camp at least a few times this summer,
though.
If you're up for a jaunt down the Parkway sometime send me a message!

 Hello,

I'm looking for people to ride with inside a 2 hour driving radius of
Sacramento, CA. I'm specifically interested in two niche kinds of riding
that others here may also enjoy. (Scroll down for pictures)

 1. 5 - 20 hour randonneur style rides on low traffic backroads, gravel,
or forest service roads. I ride a Rivendell Atlantis and usually average a
moderate 7-11 mph pace on dirt depending on conditions. Sometimes I camp.
 I
also have a Co-motion Periscope tandem with 42mm tires and a dynamo
headlight. It has a 59 cm top tube, and I can ride captain or stoker.

 2. Bike camping with 2 and 5 year old children for 1 to 3 nights. My
kids love to go camping with other kids. We have an electric cargo bike
that seats three, and the tandem fits a rider as young as 5 years old.

Please drop me a note if you're local and this kind of riding sounds
fun to you! Before planning a big ride, I think it's prudent to first meet
up and go for a 1-2 hour local ride, say on the American river bike trail.

A little more about me- I'm a busy working Dad, and I've tried to
squeeze in big rides where I can for the last 15 years or so. I'm in
academia, so summers are a good time :) I moved to Sacramento last year,
and COVID has prevented me from riding much with others. I'm vaccinated
against COVID. If you're coming from the Bay Area, I may be able to drive
from Amtrak Capital Corridor into the Sierras.

 Best,
 Clark

Re: [RBW] Re: question re Dremel attachments

2021-05-20 Thread Addison Quarles
The cordless option had never occurred to me; part of my trouble has always
been the weight of the cord throwing off the balance of the tool so that
could really make a difference. And I can say for sure I've probably not
been letting the blade do the work, hence the worry about binding and
scooting into the frame/fork.
Any kind of snip would obviously be out of the question with tubular fender
stays, but I guess I had assumed we were talking about solid ones since he
didn't specify.
I've never had much problem with a hand file slipping, but it would seem
we've landed on a concrete example of different strokes being for different
folks.
Sounds like I'll have to invest in a battery operated Dremel and give this
whole "brevity thing" a try!

[RBW] Re: question re Dremel attachments

2021-05-16 Thread Addison Quarles
Are you set on using a dremel for cutting and finishing?
I use a pair of bolt cutters and a bench top belt sander with good results.
I just worry about operating spinny, cutty tools so near a (presumably)
beautiful paint job. It's of course more work to fit them, cut them, take
them off, finish the edges and then reinstall, but maybe I'm just one to
take the scenic route.
If I'm in a "hurry" I'll cut with the bolt cutters and finish with a hand
file, leaving the strut mounted to the fender but not mounted to the frame
eyelet.
All the same, if you're handy with the Dremel and trust that you won't nick
the paint, I've always enjoyed using a flex shaft attachment, as it's
easier to articulate with.
Best of luck!

Got it! Both lovely tires. I’d bought up and squirreled away some Pasela
Tourguards back when they changed over to the “Protite”
Among them a pair of 26x1.75’s. I eventually put them on something but in
hindsight I wish I’d bought more. Just mounted my last pair of 700x35’s on my
“forever bike”
I don’t know why, but I can’t stand the colors of the label. The old TG logo
just looks right.

Re: [RBW] A not-so-riv-ish Riv

2020-08-12 Thread Addison Quarles
One might argue that this bike represents a forgotten cube of Rivendell
Bullion, tucked away on a dusty shelf, waiting to be added to some
crazy-ass long-chainstayed stew a couple decades down the road.
I've longed for an All Rounder. Missed one for a criminally low price years
back and haven't slept well since.
Beautiful bike, Tim.

Re: [RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-11 Thread Addison Quarles
Jim M.:
IIRC The horns of the Crazy Bar have a 23.8mm OD and a ~20mm ID to
accommodate common bar end/TT brake levers, so running road levers would
work if one wanted to save the bar end real estate for something else. A
duo of mirrors? Bar end shifters? a couple knocks to make a slingshot?

The turquoise/yellow reminds me of the Pantani Bianchi.
What a tough selection!
