Re: [RBW] Re: Back to the Drawing Board for Kid Bike

2016-01-07 Thread Andrew Drummond
I'd definitely have the shop take a look, but I have to put my two cents in
about Islabikes. My seven year old has a 24" Beinn, and loves it. It's light,
well-made, and fits perfectly. It made her want to ride a bike again, after
being burdened with a mid-80s Schwinn that weighs more than any of my bikes.

We live in Portland, so we got to go to the islabikes shop and get her fitted,
but they know what they're doing and I'm sure they can fit over the
phone/email. It was relatively expensive, but it'll hold its value, and we'll
do ok selling it when it's time for a bigger model. Islabikes has a trade-in
program, but the guy at the shop actually told us we'd be better off selling it
ourselves (like pretty much everything else, I guess!).

The one bummer about the bike is that they wouldn't let me take the bike home
unassembled the day I bought it - they insisted on assembling it themselves,
and while they did a mostly good job (some screws were a bit loose) my daughter
was pretty antsy for a few days. Probably not an issue if you aren't local,
though.

Lastly, if he's riding 5 miles a day 5 days a week, I'd say it's worth the
money.

[RBW] Rivnuts question

2015-06-08 Thread Andrew Drummond
Rivnuts for M5 screws have a 7 or 7.5mm OD, while you'd use a 1/4" (6.35mm)
drill for a brazed in boss, so yes - a hole made for a rivnut will be too big
to braze a boss into later. You could make a custom braze-on boss, but it's
probably not worth the hassle. Correctly installed rivnuts work very well, and
as has been pointed out, you'd have to figure out how to get them out of the
tube should you choose to remove them later. How difficult that is depends on
how big your vent holes are!

[RBW] Re: Question about knife sharpening device

2015-06-01 Thread Andrew Drummond

I've never used a sharpener exactly like that, but my understanding is that
sharpeners of that ilk (the carbide versions being the worst offenders)
tend to leave a rough, almost torn-looking edge (on a microscopic scale)
compared to sharpening with a stone or ceramic rod*. *It probably depends
on the material your knife is made of, though, and it may be just fine for
a $6 knife from Ikea (I have one, total garbage. I keep trying to get rid
of it and my wife keeps bringing it back in the house. "Did you mean to put
this in the trash? I like it.".

I use a Lansky diamond setup for sharpening, which is quick and repeatable.
Not as quick as a few drags through that gizmo, but quick enough. There are
a few similar sharpeners out there with ceramic stones, which seem to work
well provided they're set at the angle you like.

[RBW] Re: Visting Portland

2015-05-27 Thread Andrew Drummond
Sounds like you'll be here for Pedalpalooza - lots of fun rides are
scheduled. Aside from that, I'd recommend Leif Erickson Rd. in Forest Park
(steep climb up paved then dirt roads from St. Helens/Hwy. 30 up to the
trail, then 9-10 miles back to town through the woods) and Apex on Division
(I think) if you're into beer. They have an ungodly assortment on tap.

[RBW] Re: Found at the Co-Op Tonight

2014-11-08 Thread Andrew Drummond

Riv's version of these stems had the same hardware. My recollection is that
the quills are friction-welded on, so Grant spec'ed them as long as he
could. Looking closely at one NItto Technomic stem I have in the parts bin,
I can see and feel the joint. I love the look of these stems too (I have
two), but they're a little on the twisty side, especially with a wide bar
like the moustache.

[RBW] Re: Using Stainless vs Carbon Steel Bolts for Racks?

2014-10-24 Thread Andrew Drummond
I've got a bike with stainless dropouts, and I'd never ever consider using
stainless fasteners in those. It might be ok if the screw is coated
liberally with anti-seize, but to me it's not worth the risk. I like the
chrome-plated screws NItto supplies. On carbon steel dropouts, sure, but
stainless in stainless is almost sure to gall. I've had to drill out a
screw and re-tap the hole when I thoughtlessly used a ss fastener in the
wrong place.

[RBW] FS: bike purge yard sale in Portland this Sunday, 9/7

2014-09-04 Thread Andrew Drummond

I’ve built myself a new frame that’ll do pretty much everything all my
other bikes needed to do, so it’s time to clean out the shed. I’m selling
my 2001 custom Rivendell and a whole bunch of other vintage/BOB-ish bike
stuff, tools, etc at my yard sale in Portland, Oregon this Sunday, 9/7, but
I’m giving the BOB/Riv lists first crack at everything. There will be more
than what’s listed, but this is the stuff I thought would be most
interesting to you all. If there’s something you’re interested in, get in
touch – I’m happy to ship, but don’t really want to make a second job of
it. That having been said, it all has to go, so if I have to ship I will.
Given past experiences I’ve had selling on the lists , I need to ask for
payment within three days of claiming an item. Paypal works, as do USPS
money orders and cash. Most every experience has been great, but if you
tell me you want something then two weeks later get upset because I sold it
to someone else because you never paid for it, sorry – I can’t hold on to
things indefinitely. Please reply off-list. Prices do not include shipping,
but everything is negotiable. It needs to go!

If you’re local, come by – there’s going to be lots more besides bike
stuff, like tools, photography equipment, etc. NE 79th and Sandy, follow
the green signs.

Photos of everything are coming shortly; hopefully tonight but we’ll see.

Now, on to the stuff:

*61cm 700c Rivendell longlow-ish frame, built for me by Curt Goodrich in
2001. Detailed specs:*

700c

61cm seat tube (77 saddle height)

58 effective top tube

HT angle 72.5

ST angle 72

Rake 45mm

BB drop 80mm

Chainstay length 440mm

Cantilever brakes

Three water bottle mounts

Two eyelets front and rear

Horizontal dropouts

Tapered downtube (31.8 at BB, 28.6 at HT, .9-.6-.9)

28.6 top tube (.8-.6-.8)

double tapered 16mm seat stays (heavy, for loaded riding)

straight, round/oval/round, dented chainstays

1.1mm True Temper fork blades

It’s pretty similar to an Atlantis geometry-wise, but with the narrower
RC03 crown, straight/dented chain stays, and double taper seat stays. It’s
probably a little heavy for me (I’m 5-10/150), but I asked for a loaded
tourer, so that’s what I got. It’s thirteen years old, so it has some minor
paint chips and scuffs, particularly around the dropouts, but no dents or
real damage. Paint is the original fancy-detailed Imron Garnet Red Metallic
by JB. *$1400*

*Kids’ 20 inch (451mm) lugged road-ish bike*. I think it’s a Free Spirit.
Newly powder coated sparkly purple. Tektro R365 dual pivot brakes, Deore
thumbshifter (I’ll throw the second one in case you want to put another
chainring on there), Nitto hi-crown stem, Primo Comet tires, six speed
freewheel, 600 rear derailleur, Tange levin headset, kickstand,
custom-shortened Deore cranks (135mm). Front hub is kind of an oddball –
it’s a 90mm wide axle. I shortened a CODA hub, so now it has replaceable
cartridge bearings. DT has water bottle bosses. Weird things about it: the
aforementioned front axle spacing, and the seat tube isn’t reamed very deep
so you need a pretty short seatpost. *$130*

*Raleigh Mountie girl’s bike.* 20” wheels, everything seems to work. Real
short cranks, though. Circa mid-70s. *$40*

*Diamond Back girl’s 16” cruiser. $40*

*Skuut balance bike*, cosmetically…functional. Works great. *$30*

*The parts:*

1. Shimano 600 BL-6208 non-aero levers, blackhoods, used $10

2. Vintage Campagnolo levers, not sure of model, gum hoods in great
condition, light rash on the levers. Nearly identical dimensionally to the
Superbes, but a bit shorter lengthwise. Flying skewer logo. $40

3. Suntour Superbe or Superbe Pro (not sure what the difference is)
levers, light use, black hoods, both are R side levers (difference is in
the texture on the levers) $30

4. Suntour Superbe or Superbe Pro levers, used, with a little rash.
Gum hoods look good, but I wouldn’t turn them inside out. $30

5. Two sets of Shimano Exage (with button QR, NOS) – I just bought
these from a lister, then decided to sell the bike they were intended for.
$25 ea

6. Dia-Compe 290 brake levers, NOS. Weird, beautiful, beefy, double
cable adapter for one side. $20

7. Suntour Cyclone 40-50mm reach calipers. Need a cleaning, but they
work fine and everything is there. $15 (the barrel adjusters are probably
worth that!)

8. Three sets of Cane Creek brake lever hoods, black $10/all

9. Dia-Compe 984 cantilever brakes, black. Used. These take v-brake
style pads – threaded studs. $15

10. Shimano BR-MT62 cantilever brakes. Used, high profile. $20

11. Tektro Oryx cantis. Black. Excellent condition. $20

12. Suntour XC cantis. Black. NOS $30

13. Dia-Compe Royal Gran Compe standard reach (47-57) brake calipers
w/Mathauser pads. Used, but in good condition. $40

14. Dia-Compe NGC 500 standard reach (47-57) brake calipers w/Mathauser
pads. Like new. $40

15. One set of slightly

[RBW] Re: TA Cranks - 160mm

2014-06-18 Thread Andrew Drummond
Don't worry about the french threads on the ebay cranks - they're close
enough you can just run a tap through and put your english threaded pedals
on. M14x1.25 is 0.011" smaller in diameter than 9/16-20, and the pitch
difference (1.25 vs 1.27mm) is hardly worth thinking about. Will you have
perfect english threads? No, but really, they'll be close enough. Don't
forget the anti-seize, though!

[RBW] Re: New RBW Silver brand chainrings available!

2013-12-20 Thread Andrew Drummond
The hidden chainring bolt, while a pain in the ass and kind of ugly, is a
result of getting rid of a pair of stress risers - on cranks where two of
the spider arms straddle the crank arm, there's a small angle where cracks
can start, because the web is thin and is subject to constant stress cycles
(see old Campy cranks for a popular example). When one of the spider arms
is moved under the crank arm, those angles are opened way up and the stress
risers are greatly reduced. Sort of like the point on the bb end of the
Ritchey logic crank - it looks weird, but prevents the crank from cracking
from one corner of the square tapered hole.

[RBW] Re: Low Normal Derailers

2013-09-11 Thread Andrew Drummond

I have XTR low-normals (also known as rapid rise) on two bikes, and given a
choice I wouldn't use anything else. I do have two other bikes with
"normal" shifting (not enough low-normals to go around right now), but it's
not an issue to go back and forth - they all have different kinds of
shifters anyway. I suspect that if the low-normal style had been developed
first, nobody would have bothered with the other way. What's the point?

[RBW] Re: San Juan Islands Tour Advice

2013-05-16 Thread Andrew Drummond

I wouldn't skip Orcas either - Mountain Lake in Moran State Park is
beautiful, and an easy ride from the campground if that's where you're
staying (pay for rentals at Cascade Lake). You can rent a boat there, and
paddle around for a few hours. There's a fun rope swing on the shore, and a
small island (an island...in a lake... on an island!) worth tying up on for
a picnic or something. My family was there last summer, and we were nearly
alone on a beautiful summer day. There's also fun riding on the fire
roads/trails around Mount Constitution, and not a single wine bar or BMW in
sight. Doe Bay Resort is nice too, quiet and out of the way, with a wide
range of accommodations available from camping to dorm-style to cabins.
That having been said, Lopez is a great place to ride - have fun!

[RBW] Re: FS: Baggins Boxy bag with Nitto F15 rack, more Baggins bags and miscellaneous parts coming soon

2012-08-23 Thread Andrew Drummond
Bag is sold, pending payment. The flickr gallery has been updated with more
for sale, and there's still more to come (no photos of bags, rack, or
wheels yet).

 Mavic hubs, off a 1990 Bridgestone MB-0. Polished finish, 32 hole, 130mm
OLN. Used, but in excellent condition. Mavic skewers included. $100 shipped

Mavic front hub, black, 32 hole. Used, but in excellent condition. Mavic
skewer included. $35 shipped

Rivendell lugged quill stem, 10cm. Used, but in very good condition. There
are some minor scratches on the drive side of the quill lug (visible in
photo). $135 shipped

XTR front derailleurs. FD-M952. One 28.6, one 34.9, both bottom pull. Used,
but in good condition – no dents or major scratches. The 34.9 derailleur
has a bit more wear inside the outer cage; the 28.6 is practically new. $20
ea shipped

Rivendell Baggins rear panniers. A little dirty, but no damage. Straps to
bind them to your rack sides are included. $100 shipped

Baggins Hoss (large) saddlebag – used, but in very good condition. Some
dirt, but no damage. All straps included. $150 shipped

Baggins Adam (medium) saddlebag– used, but in very good condition. Some
dirt, but no damage. All straps included. $120 shipped

Rivendell/Nitto large front rack. Installed briefly, but not used. All
hardware included. This is from the early days of the rack, when it was
offered in both 700c and 26 inch versions; this one is 700c. Might work on
other sizes, but I haven’t tried it (may require drilling additional holes
in the lower tabs, as on the current version). Pre-triangulation, but
really – it’s not going to fail. $140 shipped

Wheelset – 700c Bontrager Fairlane rims, rear asymmetrical, 36 hole, Phil
freewheel rear and Mavic front hubs, DT Competition spokes. Very strong
wheels, excellent for touring. Fairly wide - I can take a measurement if
you're interested. Relatively low miles, excellent condition. $200 +
shipping

Wheelset – 26” Bontrager Maverick rims, rear asymmetrical, 32 hole, black
Bullseye front and rear hubs. Hubs were used, but rims were brand new when
laced. They have maybe 30 miles on them – machining marks are still
perfectly clear on the sidewalls. Rim stickers are not perfect, because the
bike they were on hung from a hook in the shed for a while. $125 + shipping

I’d consider some trades too – I’d love to find:

Dia-Compe 982 cantis, preferably silver but black wouldn’t kill me.

Sugino Mighty Tour or some other quality 110 double crank

A tasteful threadless stem, 10cm, 0 degree rise (90 deg to steer tube),
silver, detachable faceplate, 26.0 clamp. Brazed steel or forged aluminum.
Preferably 1", but I can live with a shim.

XTR rear derailleur (rapid rise a plus)

An interesting front derailleur suitable for use with a 46t big ring -
early MTB-ish.

Please get in touch with questions/offers/etc. I accept paypal and postal
money orders, and cash if you’re local.

Like the title says, I'm selling a Baggins Boxy bag and the Nitto F15 rack
it goes on. The good: it's a Baggins bag, with no tears or other damage.
The bad - it could use a cleaning, but most of the dirt is on the inside,
so maybe you don't care. The ugly - nothing really, unless you count the
repair to the clamps on the rack - see the photos here:

$100 shipped from Portland, OR, paypal or postal money order, please. I'll
have more bags and stuff for sale shortly, including Baggins saddlebags
(Hoss and Adam), original Baggins panniers, a Nitto big front rack, Mavic
hubs off an MB-0, a 26" Bullseye wheelset, etc. More than I can remember
right now, but they'll be listed as soon as I can get photos taken,
hopefully tonight.

Thanks for the suggestions; unfortunately I ended up just working the whole
time. I'm sure I'll be back, though!

[RBW] Bike-y things to do in Mpls in the next few days?

2012-08-14 Thread Andrew Drummond
So I'm just outside Minneapolis for the next few days and I'm wondering if
anyone has recommendations for interesting bike shops, etc. to see while
I'm in town. I'm in Plymouth, west of the cities, but I have a car (no
bike, unfortunately) so I can get around. I'm probably going to be working
longish days, so I may not get to do anything, but I'm sure I'll be back
before long - it's a big project, and nowhere near done.

thanks,
Andrew
