Re: [RBW] Brave, Foolish, or maybe necessary?
I totally agree. We've, here in Louisville on our local bicycle club list, have had the same discussion. It's amazing how many people commute with little or poor lighting. A few weeks ago a commuter was killed. The young man was riding in the outside lane on a busy boulevard early in the morning (dark) wearing dark non-reflective clothing with a tinny rear light and no front light. The motorist stated she did not see him until it was too late to avoid him. It's tragic and he, as a cyclist, had a right to be on the road but Bill In a message dated 12/10/2010 8:00:43 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, mhech...@gmail.com writes: I live in northern VT, one ride below the nth parallel. I'm 6 miles down the road to the nearest shops and services. Sunset, this time of year is around 4:30 and until the big lakes freeze over, the weather tends to be cloudy and snowy. With the moon in its last quarter its very dark, very early. It has snowed slowly and steadily through the week, leaving about 15 of snow cover and the road shoulders with an inch or two of packed and loose snow. The skies started to clear a bit yesterday and the temps dropped , +14 at sundown and -10 by sunrise this morning. I headed into town at 5:00, in my car and drove down an unlit country road, passing a nearly steady stream of commuters headed home up the road. Suddenly I saw a very bright bicycle light coming up the road. As I passed him (her?) I saw that the tail light was just avgas. My first thought was, wow that takes some guts, but my second thought was that's more risk than I would ever want to take on a bicycle, and my third thought was I don't mind riding in the dark; I don't mind riding in the cold; and I don't mind riding in the wet. But that much cold, dark, wet and risk all at the same time is something I wouldn't choose to do, unless it was absolutely necessary. What do you think? The replacement bike, a used Ram, is not as stable, but is more like other bikes I've had. Neither bike has any shimmy at all. I did own, for a while, a Cotic Roadrat , but that baby was shimmy city and was sold quickly. On that bike a headset change quieted it as did a tire switch. But I could not get rid of it. I even think the size and shape of the rider could influence it dynamically as much as bike geometry and even things like tire tread pattern. Re: [RBW] Roadeo vs AHH. Your thoughts?
Good point. The Rambouillet is a fine bike. It was my first experience with steel lugged bikes and got it initially with the intention of using it as my country bike and using my Litespeed Vortex (6-4 ti) as my go fast bike. I quickly discovered that I was just as fast and more comfortable on the Rambouillet. Without really trying I've gotten the Rambouillet down to 19 pounds...and most importantly, it has a nicer color scheme, prettier head badge, and not a goofy name like the Roadeo (no offence). Oh, I also have the Hilsen and the Rambouillet is faster but Homer is set up for randonneuring. Bill Louisville, Ky In a message dated 12/5/2010 6:39:08 P.M. You're right, it's never going to hold a load like a buckle system. Guess I should have thought of that before I purchased it. I used the simple solution when the failure occurred on two separate occasions. It was not a major problem - only one side would come loose - but it's not something I should have to be concerned about on a brevet and it's certainly going to stop me from attempting to put anything heavy into it. Here's my experience with the Challenge tire: Had my first flat (slow leak due to road grit) at 785 miles on the rear tire. Put a kevlar liner on the rear and have ridden an additional 572 miles without a flat on either tire. All miles, except for 8 miles of gravel roads, were on paved, although at time, roughly paved roads. The tread on both tires still looks excellent. Re: [RBW] Re: Velo Orange Campagne Handlebar Bar
I've purchased quite a bit from VO and one thing that I noticed is that the first run of a number of products don't work as well as later runs - so beware. An example would be the Croissant Bag. I, and a friend, have one from the first run and they both hang and sway behind the seat like wet noodles. The newer one has a stifiner in it and I'm assuming it rides better. There seems to be the same criticism with the first run of leather saddles as well as other products. My impression is that VO is trying to bring out too many products too fast and too early. In my opinion, when Rivendell sells a product the trial and error factor has already been resolved. Bill In a message dated 11/18/2009 7:29:16 P.M. Just as a matter of curiosity, I'm fairly new to the Rivendell cult (green Rambouillet), the name of the new bike (it who will not be named), seems to have caused some controversy. Secondly, all this hoopla about building a sub 20 pound bike - I got my Rambouillet just under 20 pounds with Brooks, Nitto stuff, SPD pedals, but with stupid wheels (Grant's definition - not mine). Aaron, As I was reading your report I assumed that your's was an isolated case. The responses seem to confirm that. It's funny, The last couple of years Louisville has hosted an USA Iron Man Triathlon. A lot of folks have gotten the bug and want to do the Iron Man distance. They've gone out and purchased tri bikes and end up on local club centuries. Unfortunately, most don't have the bike handling skills - they insist riding up steep hills at 5 to 7 mph in their pointy bars, etc. Fortunately, most realize their bike handling skills suck and they either ride off of the back or the front of the group but there's always the idiot that wants to be in the pace line riding on the pointy bars or that you need to get around as they slowly zig zag up a hill. Fortunately, Louisville is almost in the South and people tend to be more polite, (at least according to my perspective of having grown up in Chicago), and there's almost never a harsh word spoken. Riders either keep their distance from these wannabe's or politely remind them to ride of the back. I had to laugh when you mentioned that the C spoke with a German accent. Interesting, I have the exact same bikes. I've had the 56 cm Rambouillet now for about 3 years (over 10,000 miles) and I got the Roubaix about 3 weeks ago. While I love the Rambouillet as my go fast century bike, the Roubaix design has fascinated me for some time. At this point, I've only put about 250 miles on it (first century yesterday) and my initial impression is that it is comfortable compared to many bikes but not as shock absorbing as the Rambouillet. The century that I did yesterday in Indiana had a few miles of chip and seal and the Roubaix, while OK, was definitely not as shock absorbing as the Rambouillet. I run the same wheels (Mavic Kyserum) and tires ( 25 Conti's) on both bikes. Don't get me wrong, the Roubaix has many wonderful qualities but don't buy it simply because of the winner over the cobbles hype. Yes, I agree. I have a 1996 Litespeed Vortex with, I'm guessing, 50 to 60,000 miles on it. It has a brushed finish and except for some scratches on the decals looks as good as the day I purchased it. That's another advantage of titanium. I did replace the carbon fork just because I was getting nervous after riding on it for a decade. I still love riding it. On the other hand, I've given names to my Hilsen, Rambouillet, and Quickbeam and, when no one is looking, on rides I talk to them. Don't laugh - I'm sure I'm not the only one. I guess my point is that I consider the Vortex a tool (a very efficient tool) and the steel lugged bikes as having a personality. Bill - I swear I have not been drinking - yet. [RBW] Re: Rambouillet
Mike, Congrats, it looks great. You're right, it rides a lot different than the Hilsen. My personal preferance is the hammered Honjos. You may also want to look at the Continental GatorSkins (28cm). I think they ride as well and are faster than the Ruffty Tuffys. Bill In a message dated 2/11/2009 12:56:38 P.M. I'm not sure if I'll go with Honjos, Berthouds or maybe SKS 35s (I'm now using Ruffy Tuffys as opposed to 32 Paselas). **The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. [RBW] Re: Pics of Atlantis built up as pure road bike?
I certainly agree, Anne, but comparing a Klein (super light) to a Atlantis (heavy) on hills may not be a fair comparison. Having said that, I have pretty much a similar setup on my Rambouillet and Hilsen and climb a lot faster on the skinny tires. Not only do the skinny tires climb better, feel faster, but they descend faster. I haven't done timed comparisons as Jan Heinie in Bicycle Quarterly but my top speed on the skinner tires is higher. Our roads, here in Kentucky, are fairly smoothly paved. Jan may have a point on the advantages of wider tires being faster on rough roads and they are certainly more comfortable and, also, Homer would look silly on skinny tires. There's a huge difference between that and the 32mm tires (plus a generator hub) on my Atlantis, and I climb a lot faster on the Klein. What difference does climbing a hill eight minutes faster make? For me, not that much, but for the friend waiting for me at the top, quite a lot. **A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!
