Re: [RBW] Brave, Foolish, or maybe necessary?

2010-12-10 Thread BPustow
I totally agree. We've, here in Louisville on our local bicycle club list,
have had the same discussion. It's amazing how many people commute with
little or poor lighting. A few weeks ago a commuter was killed. The young man
was riding in the outside lane on a busy boulevard early in the morning
(dark) wearing dark non-reflective clothing with a tinny rear light and no
front light. The motorist stated she did not see him until it was too late to
avoid him.
It's tragic and he, as a cyclist, had a right to be on the road
but

down the road to the nearest shops and services. Sunset, this time of
year is around 4:30 and until the big lakes freeze over, the weather
tends to be cloudy and snowy. With the moon in its last quarter its
very dark, very early.

It has snowed slowly and steadily through the week, leaving about 15
of snow cover and the road shoulders with an inch or two of packed and
loose snow. The skies started to clear a bit yesterday and the temps
dropped , +14 at sundown and -10 by sunrise this morning.

I headed into town at 5:00, in my car and drove down an unlit country
road, passing a nearly steady stream of commuters headed home up the
road. Suddenly I saw a very bright bicycle light coming up the road.
As I passed him (her?) I saw that the tail light was just avgas.

My first thought was, wow that takes some guts, but my second thought
was that's more risk than I would ever want to take on a bicycle, and
my third thought was I don't mind riding in the dark; I don't mind
riding in the cold; and I don't mind riding in the wet. But that much
cold, dark, wet and risk all at the same time is something I wouldn't
choose to do, unless it was absolutely necessary.

What do you think?

This is part of the voodoo feel to the whole thing. You can find an
article that says knobbies damp out shimmy. You can find another that
says knobbies supply the excitation force for shimmy. You can find
another article that states that wide tires like knobbies are
typically more compliant and therefore enable low frequency
oscillations to be amplified by the system.

My first few experiments are going to be:

 1. Baseline the bike. Log initial condition of all independent
variables that I might change. Attempt to measure the frequency and
 amplitude of the shimmy
 2. Vary front tire pressure and ride. Note changes
 3. Vary rear tire pressure and ride. Note changes
 4. take reference weight (like maybe two full water bottles) and put
them at various locations on the system and note any changes
 A. On front rack
 B. In H2O cages
 C. In jersey pocket
  D. On rear rack
 E. maybe elsewhere
 5. Change tires
 6. Change front wheel
 7. Change rear wheel
 8. Tighten headset or similarly damp steering
 9. Load rear end heavily
 10. Load front end heavily

think about touching the bars. I had the standard Riv supplied Tange
headset and even with Schwalbe Smart Sams ( a knobbie tire) it was
smooth as glass. The replacement bike, a used Ram, is not as stable,
but is more like other bikes I've had. Neither bike has any shimmy at
all. I did own, for a while, a Cotic Roadrat , but that baby was
shimmy city and was sold quickly. On that bike a headset change
quieted it as did a tire switch. But I could not get rid of it.

I even think the size and shape of the rider could influence it
dynamically as much as bike geometry and even things like tire tread
  pattern.
As others have mentioned above, shimmy is a complex set of factors,
and due to system (bike/rider) to system variation it can affect one

Good point. The Rambouillet is a fine bike. It was my first experience

my country bike and using my Litespeed Vortex (6-4 ti) as my go fast bike.
I quickly discovered that I was just as fast and more comfortable on the
Rambouillet.
Without really trying I've gotten the Rambouillet down to 19
pounds...and most importantly, it has a nicer color scheme, prettier head
badge,
and not a goofy name like the Roadeo (no offence).
Oh, I also have the Hilsen and the Rambouillet is faster but Homer is

Based on everything I have read, Challenge tires have excellent
components and craftsmanship. If you only ride on pavement, the tread
at most establishes trade dress.

Here's my experience with the Challenge tire: Had my first flat (slow leak
due to road grit) at 785 miles on the rear tire. Put a kevlar liner on the
rear and have ridden an additional 572 miles without a flat on either tire.
All miles, except for 8 miles of gravel roads, were on paved, although at
time, roughly paved roads. The tread on both tires still looks excellent.

In my opinion, the Challenge tire is the best tire I have ever ridden on.
It's unbelievably comfortable, fast, and the durability, admittedly after
only 1357 miles, is acceptable.

There seems to be the same criticism with the first run of leather saddles as

I ride fast club 50 milers or centuries I use my Rambouillet or
Specialized Roubaix.
I agree with the suggestion someone had made yesterday. I would order
the new Roadeo and have two sets of tires available for fast or off road

and thus comfortable, certainly beautiful, and capable of using tires that
can handle the dirt.
I've just recently gone over to the new Challenge tires (27 mm) and, my

[RBW] Re: triathlete road rage?

Is there something in the tri athlete's water that makes them so

to me to be utterly inexplicable behavior?

Aaron,
As I was reading your report I assumed that your's was an isolated
case. The responses seem to confirm that.
It's funny, The last couple of years Louisville has hosted an USA Iron
Man Triathlon. A lot of folks have gotten the bug and want to do the Iron
Man distance. They've gone out and purchased tri bikes and end up on local
club centuries. Unfortunately, most don't have the bike handling skills -
they insist riding up steep hills at 5 to 7 mph in their pointy bars, etc.
Fortunately, most realize their bike handling skills suck and they either
ride off of the back or the front of the group but there's always the idiot
that wants to be in the pace line riding on the pointy bars or that you need
to get around as they slowly zig zag up a hill.
Fortunately, Louisville is almost in the South and people tend to be
more polite, (at least according to my perspective of having grown up in
Chicago), and there's almost never a harsh word spoken. Riders either keep
their
distance from these wannabe's or politely remind them to ride of the back.
I had to laugh when you mentioned that the C spoke with a German
accent. Having lived and worked in, at the time, West Germany I could relate.
   Stay positive,
Bill

Interesting, I have the exact same bikes. I've had the 56 cm
Rambouillet now for about 3 years (over 10,000 miles) and I got the Roubaix
about 3
weeks ago. While I love the Rambouillet as my go fast century bike, the
Roubaix design has fascinated me for some time. At this point, I've only put
about 250 miles on it (first century yesterday) and my initial impression is
that it is comfortable compared to many bikes but not as shock absorbing as
the Rambouillet. The century that I did yesterday in Indiana had a few
miles of chip and seal and the Roubaix, while OK, was definitely not as shock
absorbing as the Rambouillet. I run the same wheels (Mavic Kyserum) and
tires ( 25 Conti's) on both bikes.
Don't get me wrong, the Roubaix has many wonderful qualities but don't
buy it simply because of the winner over the cobbles hype.

Yesterday, at the Germanfest rally in Muenster, however, someone
sprang a new comment on me: It is great to see an ancient bike being

Robert,
That's not all that unusual. You'll get used to it.
When I first started riding the Rambouillet, a kid on a carbon bike
told me the bike looked cool and asked me when it was built. He was
expecting to hear 1948, 1939, etc. When I told him April he didn't say anything

I could see he was having difficulty processing April.'

[RBW] Re: looking for a fast bike, where should I go.

2009-04-19 Thread BPustow
Yes, I agree.
   I have a 1996 Litespeed Vortex with, I'm guessing, 50 to 60,000 miles
on it. It has a brushed finish and except for some scratches on the decals
looks as good as the day I purchased it. That's another advantage of
titanium. I did replace the carbon fork just because I was getting nervous
after
riding on it for a decade.
I still love riding it. On the other hand, I've given names to my
Hilsen, Rambouillet, and Quickbeam and, when no one is looking, on rides I
talk
to them. Don't laugh - I'm sure I'm not the only one.
I guess my point is that I consider the Vortex a tool (a very efficient
tool) and the steel lugged bikes as having a personality.
Bill - I swear I have not been drinking - yet.

I agree with Jim that if you are looking for a used bicycle or frame,

Merlin Extralights and others including the newer Lemond ti frames
sell for anywhere from $500-1000 for frameset (usually with a carbon
fork and headset). A great deal.

Nitto stem, bar, water bottle cages
Campy Record 10 speed components
Brooks Professional Ti (before the big price increase)
American Classic seat stem (aluminum)
Shimano SPD mountain bike pedals
Mavic Ksyzium SL wheels
Conti 25cm Gator Skins tires

I could make the bike lighter by replacing the Nitto stuff, Brooks
saddle, pedals, tires. I could even get lighter wheels and a much lighter
frame
but, for me atleast, I've found components that are light, yet strong and
durable, AND comfortable.
Origionally, I hadn't planned on putting the carbon Campy components on
the Rambouillet but the dark carbon on the dark green frame looked really
really nice.
The bike was weighed without the normal small seat bag. On brevets I
carry a larger or a handle bar bag. The Mavic wheels on the Rambouillet are
relatively new. On another bike I've put over 15,000 miles on them without
any problems.

In my opinion, you're fine. Homer is a heavy, sturdy bike - I have one.
Your weight might be a problem on fire roads but should not be a concern on
paved roads. Rivendell, as most companies, is concerned about liability issues
-
not any different than Conti recommending only a max of 90 psi in their tires
and everyone I know runs them between 100 to 120 psi - but that's a whole
other issue.

2009-02-10 Thread BPustow
I certainly agree, Anne, but comparing a Klein (super light) to a Atlantis
(heavy) on hills may not be a fair comparison. Having said that, I have pretty
much a similar setup on my Rambouillet and Hilsen and climb a lot faster on
the skinny tires. Not only do the skinny tires climb better, feel faster, but
they descend faster. I haven't done timed comparisons as Jan Heinie in
Bicycle Quarterly but my top speed on the skinner tires is higher. Our
roads,
here in Kentucky, are fairly smoothly paved. Jan may have a point on the
advantages of wider tires being faster on rough roads and they are certainly
more
comfortable and, also, Homer would look silly on skinny tires.
