I found Scott Carneys book WHAT DOESN'T KILL US very infomative about the
massive change heating and air conditioning have caused on human existence.
For the entire history of humanity, humans have been subjected to
tremendous weather changes each year. We basically now live at 72-74
degrees year round. This is a very informative book that is great food for
thought.

[RBW] Re: Berthoud bag/Marks rack mounting question

2014-09-28 Thread Burton
I know you said no Jerry-rigging, but I came up with a super easy solution for
this that I think is better than a decaleur. I may have stolen the idea from a
Weigle photo but I can't remember for sure. Anyway, I bought some 3/4 aluminum
bar stock and made a bridge across the rack. Pictur a straight bar with two
little feet that are bolted to the eyelets on the rack sides. Then I fashioned
a strut that goes inside the Berthoud bag. Picture a flat bottomed U that goes
up the sides and tucks under the Velcro flaps that hold the card board
stiffener in place. Then I drilled through the strut, the bag bottom, and the
bridge, added two bolts with brass knurled nuts and presto! Rock solid rando
bag, no handlebar real estate consumed or finicky decaleur to mess with. It's
worked great for a few years , including on some very long, very bumpy rides.

Re: [RBW] Grant on tires

2014-03-19 Thread Burton
I'm fairly certain I bought my Sam because the test bike was shod with Hetres.
It's my first Riv. I'd taken a few test rides on other bikes, and my
then-current bike had Duremes, and the Sam felt completely different. Nimble,
but laughably smooth going over cobble and rough macadam. The difference was
night and day. I immediately placed my order for the Sam and have put many
thousands of miles on Hetres since, with very few flats. I'd guesstimate I get
between two and three thousand miles a tire, depending on front and rear. The
Hetres only come off for some Nokians in the Winter. The Nokians in comparison
are dead, heavy, and jarring, but bite like crazy on the ice.

I just bought my wife one of the last available Betty Foys, and her reaction
was the same--big wide grin, commenting that the ride was so, so nice. Props to
the lovely bike, but best money spent is on the tires.

I'm new to biking, but have spent many years ski racing. Both sports are badly
afflicted with gear junkies. And if you were to ask me where to spend your
money on ski gear, I'd say boots, pay whatever it takes on boots; everything
else flows from there and is secondary. Kind of feel the same about my Hetres.

[RBW] Re: Any commuters here?

2012-10-04 Thread Burton
99 percent of my riding on my Sam was commuting until recently. I bought it
when my commute went from 10 miles round trip to 46 and i wanted a bike that I
would enjoy sitting on for a few hours everyday. I set it up with a SON dyno,
wired lights front and rear, and a DiNotte rear flamethrower for good measure.
Medium Sakville seat bag holds a latop and clothes. That long commute finally
broke me, especially the Boston winters, so I bought a house closer to my
office, and ended up working from home most days. Now I use the bike to haul my
kids to school in a trailer.

I went for my very first recreational ride, (not counting a couple entries in
the D2R2) about 3 weeks ago.

Re: [RBW] Review of "Just Ride."

2012-06-29 Thread Burton
An anecdote on the road bike thing. Last year, as part of a charity ride (my
second ever organized ride) I had the opportunity to go for a VIP ride the day
before the real event. This is a ride put on by a somewhat famous Holliwood
actor with several world-class pros and other top flight racers. I showed up to
the start of the VIP ride late, about 15 minutes after the group had headed
out, so, thinking I'd likely never catch up, I hammered it. Caught up after
about half an hour (they were keeping a very leisurely pace). There I was, on
my Hillbourne in full station wagon mode, while everyone else was on a bike
straight off the manufacturer's team van. TdF level riders were coming over to
gawk at my set up; the friction shifters, fenders, dyno hub, front bag, and
they were loving it. Like they never new a bike could be so, em, practical.

The next day, on the charity century, the guy I'm riding with is on a full race
stock Specialized bike. His rear wheel (CF everything) exploded. Few times have
I felt so glad to be contrarian.

Re: [RBW] New Mexico listmembers?

I grew up in Albuquerque, though now I live outside Boston. Was back there last
summer for high school reunion and went on a ride with an old classmate. We'd
planned on riding up to the Crest but the road was closed due to fire danger.
Instead, we started down in the valley, north up to Paseo, then up Tramway
across to the Tijeras Canyon. Rode out the canyon and then looped back to the
valley ending at Sadie's for lunch. Almost exactly 50 miles under a blazing
July sun. Haven't been that thirsty since I went back East for college. Best
tasting Negro Modelo I think I've ever had after that ride.

I've got Hetres on my Sam with fenders and they are fantastic. I get
about 5,000 miles out of them, with very few flats, maybe one every
2,000 miles on the pair. I ride on the shoulder with the road debris,
on single track, whatever, and they're just about perfect in
everything but deep mud.

I used them for the d2r2 last year and my butt didnt get sore after 75
miles of dirt roads, and going down hills next to guys on skinny
tires, I rolled significantly faster. Though maybe that's because
gravity likes me a lot.

[RBW] Re: Using a Sam Hillborne as a "go fast-ish" bike

2012-03-27 Thread Burton
I think of my 650B Sam as a Volvo station wagon.

I don't really know for going fast, but as my commute bike I always
thought the Sam was relatively fast. I could squeeze out my 25 mile
commute in just a smudge under an hour and fifteen minutes, fully
loaded with laptop, tools, clothes, whatever. That's if I was
motivated to get home in time for dinner.

Then I rode a real go fast bike for the first time--a mid 80s custom
Bruce Gordon race bike. That thing felt like a Porsche 911 to my Sam
Volvo 240. Now, my favorite car ever was a 240, but I never thought of
it as fastish.

[RBW] Re: Medium Saddle Sack and Top Rack

2010-05-20 Thread Burton
I have this set-up, and it works very well, with one addition: the
Nitto quick release Saddlebag Grip. Before I had the grip, I attached
it directly to the saddle and zip-tied the bottom of the bag to the
rack and it was solid as could be. When I got the grip, I ditched the
zip ties, but any swaying I have is minimal. The combo of medium
saddle sack/Top Rack/Grip makes this set-up incredibly functional for
me. The bag holds my laptop, change of clothes, tools, wallet, etc.
The grip acts as a handle for the bag off the bike. Part of my commute
is on a train. When I get on the train, it takes me two seconds to
take the bag off so I can take my laptop to my seat (free train Wi-
Fi!), then it takes me three seconds to put the bag back on when I get
off the train, and then when I get to work and put my bike in a
storage room, it again takes no time at all to take my bag to my
office. It's such a good combo that a co-worker of mine ordered the
same set-up, and I'm often asked about where I got it, in particular
the grip.

My only two negatives on the whole kit is the edges of the metal label
on my bag were razor sharp (so sharp it took me a while to figure out
where the cuts on my hands were coming from) but I fixed that with a
diamond stone, and the straps that attach the bag to the seat (or the
grip in my case) aren't quite strong enough to support the 15-20
pounds of stuff I cram in the bag so the leather has stretched. I'll
replace the straps with nylon webbing eventually.
