WTB 25.4mm clamp riser-type handlebar. Examples include Answer Alumalite
Riser Bar, Rtichey has one, Kalloy, ect. Aluminum preferred to steel.
Looking for 40-60mm of rise. 550mm+ width.

The offerings for new bars with my specs are very affordable, however, I
try to buy used whenever possible. These will be going on a mid-90s
Independent Fabrication Deluxe single speed mountain bike build.

Thanks!

Renewing this informative old post to see if anyone has attempted
dimpling/indenting their Riv chainstays to increase tire clearance in the
last 5 years.

My application is a Saluki running 47mm Teravail Cannonballs. The tires
fit but there is only 3-4mm of clearance on either side. Looking to
increase my margin of safety!

[RBW] Re: Rene Herse crank wobble/deflection issue(?)

2018-09-14 Thread C.J. Filip
I had to go wider on the BB spindle than what you might need on a non-Riv.
I had nothing but chain rub on the front derailleur body either. A wider
BB allowed me to raise the FD up the seat tube where the chain could run in
the widest part of the FD body while still preventing the outer FD body
from hitting the drive-side crank.

This negates some of the low-tread/Q of the crank, but the Q will still be
less than most other modern cranks out there by a good margin.

Inquiries welcome for trades only. Not looking to sell unless I can find a

combining construction ideas of GP and rando/brevet ideas of JH/BQ. I load
it up with a Jannd low-rider (thanks ample braze-ons) and Nitto R-14 for

Re: [RBW] Re: Correct Honjo Fenders for Saluki frame?

2017-02-10 Thread C.J. Filip
Patrick,

I used the dimpling/indentation method described a BQ volume from 2011 or so.

Basically, I drilled a 1" hole in a 2x4 and cut the 2x4 so the 1" hole was
halved. Place the fender on the wood form where you want the dimple and gently
form the dimple with a wooden dowel and mallet.

In the case of Saluki, the dimple was fai rly deep and threw the radius of the
fender off. This can be compensated for by gently and evenly spreading the
fender (make it wider) thereby decreasing the radius of the fender for proper
tire wrap.

Confused yet?

[RBW] Re: Correct Honjo Fenders for Saluki frame?

2017-02-08 Thread C.J. Filip

In a blatant attempt to dredge up the past, add to the knowledge base and
show a bad, highly edited/filtered picture...

A 60cm canti Saluki with 58mm Honjo fluted fenders mated with 42mm
Hetres/Babyshoe Pass tires!

The rear fender required considerable indentation/dimpling at the
chainstays. Mild indentation was required at the fork crown.

Fenderline is a ways from perfect, but couldn't help myself from sharing!

My short answer would be when tensioning it laterally with cord loses it's

soon went back to feeling overly hammocky on my groin. For now, cord is all
I'll use to keep it propped up to where I like it and so far so good. I expect
to have to tension it via the bolt in the distant future, which amounts to 1-2
years with my riding habits.

in the hunt. Well, OK, the bomb is available as a custom, but I'd feel
guilty. And Raw continues to produce 650B, but with lightweight frames that
may not be suitable for some of the rougher tougher stuff we'd expect of a
 Hunq or a Bombadil.
(My bikes are working bikes: I actually use my bikes to commute and to do
field work in wildlands, but the Saluki and Betty were obviously not
designed for the latter. I imagine it would be nice to have a bike designed
to carry a significant load and handle deep sand and rocky roads and
moderately difficult downhills and long distance travel on pavement. Sort
of like a Hunq or a Bomb.)
Maybe I should get a Hunq, but for my size, the 650B wheels just seem so
much more sensible and fitting and maneuverable, and it's what I'm used to
(on my Saluki and Betty), and the tires are now available in spades.
Your thoughts (or insider knowledge) on whether I should settle for 700
Hunq, or hold out for Riv or Raw to return to their roots, or look
elsewhere for a (used?) 650B heavy duty bike.

Re: [RBW] Which bike gets the winter tires?

2013-12-15 Thread C.J. Filip
I ride a '95 Independent Fabrication mtb with studded tires during the
northern Idaho winters. The rear wheel has an WI ENO (eccentric) hub for
use as a single speed and I've found fixed winter riding to be exhilarating
and sobering all at the same time. In summer the tires get switched out
and the wheel flipped to the freewheel threaded side for dedicated mtb use.

When it snows the deep lugs of the tires are a necessity. Then the snow
gets packed or there's black ice, the studs are a necessity. I've been
riding the same tires for 4 years.

2013-07-07 Thread C.J. Filip
If living temporarily 2 years someplace, yes, probably, if I was involved
with work and it was a boring location.

I'm established in a town I moved to about three years ago with a nice mix
of terrain, road surfaces (and qualities) and my Saluki could definitely do
all the things I want it to but a dedicated cross county mtb, a beater
cross bike, a dedicated road bike (anti-unracer) are permanent residents.

Oh, and there's a bike stashed at my parents ~3000 miles away for rides
back in the hood. Even if I eliminated all bikes here, there'd still be
the Indy Fab back home.

to undertake a thousand mile drive at any moment is not absurd, nor outside

The logic for bicycles being applied to cars would be true if one had
really exceptional requirements from an automobile. Off the lot models
provide a spectrum of choice and expense to suit most; the game changes
when modifications are made which seems the inverse of bicycles. Parts of a
bike are collected and assembled by the brands which individuals can do as
well, if not better, if the budget is not concerning; don't like the wheels
but the bike was a close-out deal if for the component group alone, build
some that really suit you. The threads of car group discussions about
changing OEM run-flat tires to conventional ones and carrying a spare are

Re: [RBW] Re: What's that response called, and which model has it?

2013-04-05 Thread C.J. Filip
Don't forget the 60 and 62 that the Saluki came in before the notion of the
Hiluki. As far as bigger tires, most my early 59cm Hilsen could fit was
38mm w/ fenders. My #14 60cm Saluki fits Hetres with fenders.

Back on topic, I feel my current steed, the Saluki is stouter than the
Hilsen. Maybe it's the wheels, but that doesn't really make sense because
I don't leave the ground. I measure my frames ability to plane, or judge
them to lack it based on their ability to tour with moderate loads, and the
Saluki is no slouch for that kind of thing, better than my former 59cm
Hilsen.

except for the 47 (2.5 deg). In addition to HT angle noted by Steve, Hilsen
also has longer chain stays, more rake and takes bigger tires than Saluki.
The original ads for Hilsen said it functionally rode the same as Saluki so
it made sense to blend the 2 bikes into one. Anything Saluki can do, Hilsen
 can do, and vice versa.

It's also been said that the AHH began life as a Saluki with a different

clearance and the head angle on the two are different (71 vs 73).

replaced the original derailler (XT Deerhead) with a 90's XT model and even
with a longer B-tension screw, the new derailler just can't accommodate the
34t cog.

I'd like to trade for a 30t or 32t max high gear 5-speed freewheel.
Doesn't have to be Suntour. I'll throw in the Deerhead derailler if
sprucing it up for a period-specific resto is your thing.

off. Would like to explore new horizons with a set of Albas. Same
for the Nitto Dream (44cm) bars of decade-ago Riviness. The ramp is

Also have a 10cm Technomic stem that I'd like to trade for something
longer of the same ilk. 12-13cm would be ideal.

Anddd, a 10cm Dirt Drop stem I could trade for the same above.

The Alba/12-13cm combo will be going on a '86 (or so) Bridgestone
T-700. The Saluki is perfect as it is.

Lots of options here folks, doesn't have to be a package-deal trade if
you see a stem or bar you like.

single ride. I rode it so few times because, like previous similar attempts,
I found that riding a road bike was too confining. I relish the freedom to
roll off the pavement more than I care about riding my fastest or keeping up
with faster riders. To each his/her own, but now my speed bike is a Surly
Cross-check with 700x40 marathon supremes. That said, I do sometimes get a
wild hair and casually pass roadies on expensive bikes. This is especially
fun on my Brompton or Pugsley.
