[RBW] Handlebar

2013-03-26 Thread Davidbea

While waiting for the Nitto randonneur bar I ordered from my LBS to arrive-
one of thre options I’m considering for my new Homer build- I stopped by
the bike coop and found this bar:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/71834221@N00/8591612115/in/photostream

It’s labelled GB and British Made.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/71834221@N00/8592703534/in/set-72157633092067433

http://www.flickr.com/photos/71834221@N00/8592699168/in/set-72157633092067433

When the Nitto I lined the two up and noticed, besides an unfortunate bend
at the right end, it is almost exactly the same.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/71834221@N00/8592696840/in/set-72157633092067433/lightbox/

Is this the bar the Nitto is patterned after? Would it be okay to put a
pipe in the bar end to ‘correct’ the errant right end. Would it be safe
now or corrected?

BTW I am 62 years old and 150 lbs so wouldn’t be adding a lot of stress to
it.

[RBW] Re: Budget Riv? Still on the horizon?

I’ve also spent many hundreds of dollars (at least) on Bridgestones,
Univegas, Miyatas and hybrid Bianchis not buying a Rivendell. I’ve been *almost
*satisfied but still wanted the real thing.

I finally decided to take the plunge and am picking up a new 56cm 650B H.
Homer Hilsen frame set. It’s one of the last single tube Toyo’s. Looking to
put this together within as tight a budget as reasonably possible but am
certainly excited about spring’s imminent arrival here with a new bike.

Here is how to get a budget Riv now (other than waiting for a used deal,
which could also take a while):

Get yourself a zero % interest credit card. Get a Sam or Betty now
before the price goes up (get the unpainted head tube if still available in
your size). Set up automatic payments so that you pay off the frame before
the interest kicks in. Find a bargain older bike on Craig's List that has a
suitable selection of parts. Move the parts over (650B wheels will be a
problem, though). Scrounge for the rest (long reach brakes and wheels) here
on the RBW list and the iBob list.

The $400 you could save in a budget frame is a pittance even on a budget
if spread out over a year. Commit to cooking for your family instead of
going out to eat, do without cable, stop drinking beer and wine for a year,
or juice (it's not that healthy, anyway), whatever. Or ride your new bike
everywhere if you are now driving a car. Sell the car, buy a trailer for
the kids, or a front mounted and rear mounted child seat. There are ways to
save $40 a month if you are working and living in the US. I waited for
years before buying a Riv because they seemed so extravagant. Buying the
original Sam at $1000 in 2009 felt like a super-splurge bordering on the
irresponsible, but I bit the bullet because it was half of the other Rivs.
 I wish I hadn't waited so long.

Hope I don't sound preachy, and perhaps your finances are more dire than
mine are/were (maxed out credit cards?), but most employed folk in the US
can afford a Sam, especially if it can replace car trips some of the time.
It's mostly a matter of priorities, and perhaps overcoming fear.

 Cheers,

 Gernot

[RBW] Re: flat bars on the hilsen

2013-02-13 Thread Davidbea
The first good bicycle I picked up was from an old co-worker who complained
his back prevented him from riding. I was just getting back into bicycling
as I retired and had discovered Rivendell, etc.. I realized that was my
type of riding. When he said he had this bicycle he wanted to get rid of, I
asked him what kind it was thinking it would be a department store type. He
told me it was a Bridgestone
in almost new condition. It still has the original Richey slicks with nubs
on them. I expected to put mustache or drop bars on it. It's an XO-5 with
original arc bars which I can't get myself to replace. They are just so
comfortable. I have since picked up a lugged Miyata Triple Cross which I
put mustache bars on and and lugged Bianchi Advantage that I put drop bars
on. I toy with changing the bars on the XO-5 and then I just ride and
forget about it.

ended up in. So I thought I'd try it out on the hilsen.

I think the stem reach might be a bit too long and maybe a touch higher
than I want but the position doesn't feel too bad.

Glad it worked for you. Today, I ended up doing 25 or so miles (not on a

with no covering of vents. Oh, and Capo long finger gloves. Was just
 about right.

Pendleton Clan Boyd scarf wrapped 1 1/4 times about neck under collar
kept sensitive neck very comfortable. Best at about 6 wide and 24

it in place it seems to work.

Yesterday I tried the 6 section of lower lycra tight -- relatively
 lightweight: not nearly as good.

After two aborted payment attempts, the silk mock turtleneck dickies
are on the way -- 4-to-8-business-days.

Next week: 30% chance of snow mid week nights; fleece gaiters are waiting.
