[RBW] Re: LA Bump Ride.
Good day for a ride and not quite as hot as the desert. my camera battery was lost early in the ride (not so interesting story), so all the picture taking was done by Hugh. After seeing Hugh off in China town, I rode to Union Station - a few trains were cancelled so I rode around for a few more hours, visiting some old stomping grounds. Felt an inspiration to photograph stuff, my only means was lousy iPhone camera ... Deacon that's cool that you had that vicarious sense of adventure, I think that is at the escense of why we take pictures. It is nice to look at your camp photos. it makes California feel very dry right now. -EvanS canyon country -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Who's drinking the Kool Aid?
I must've been drinking the same sort of Kool-Aid as Grant , before I even discovered Rivendell. I discovered Rivendell oddly through a google search of bike camping; then Riv'd out my tig'd steel steed which was stolen... and eventually met Homer. The biggest influence for me to start biking was uncle Larry who's most certainly a retrogrouch, who until recently exclusively rode lugged steel. Just a few months ago he cut the steer tube to size on a Look lugged carbon bike that sat in his living room for a few years. Over the years he would check out the readers, occassionally call up Rivendell for something. He's not an owner, but I may invite him to join these discussions because he'd definitely cause some arguments and stir things up a little. Most of us drink our own Kool-Aid, and maybe associate with folks into a similar poison... while there is a sort of 'Just Ride' philosophy underpinning our group here, a lot of folks are just riding and not thinking twice about what type of socks or pedals, etc (but maybe someone needs to tell them about wool). -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Thanks guys, it was super fun riding and hanging with you all. There's already talk of a possible San Diego ride and Hugh and I are planning a little LA exploration ride if anyone else is interested. Pannier ramble: After a debating endlessly between Sackville Swift, I stumbled on the Carsick designs. They had one set of waxed green canvas in stock the price was right so I jumped on it. Before purchasing these panniers I made an inquiry with Monica and Brian about possible custom color options. If you are willing to be patient, they're happy to work with you on a more custom color as long as it is available from their canvas provider. Brian also mentioned it would be possible to make a more custom bag- so I believe you could specify the dimensions and they'd make it. These panniers feature Carsick is developing some interesting frame and handlebar bags in a wide range of colors (even camo and tie-dye!), and pretty soon they will have a new website that shows off more of their products. Deacon, I've never seen the Sackville Panniers in person but I figure the material is the same as on my Slickersack. The waxed canvas on these panniers is pretty beefy, but slightly less cushiony (for lack of a better adj.) than my Slickersack. This was my first ride with the panniers and they were super; I can't say how they would perform in rain and snow because I live in Southern California! Hugh, Your post made me feel a bit of nostalgia for my 41cm Noodles! I envy your comfort on the Noodles because for me I could never quite find them relaxed. Going along with what the others said, this weekend was the first time most of us had met each other, and by the end of the first night, brought together by a shared passion, we all felt like old friends. There were so many firsts for me on this trip: first S240 with the bike, mini tour and Ramble, and first meet up with a few more Rivendell Brothers Most of my documentation happened off-the-bike at el Churro or during and during short snack brakes. Doug, you are a sage-like, map toting, trail guru; thanks for picking such interesting routes and leading us on an excellent Ramble. Jim, I envy your proto-Hunq despite it being more than 20cm too tall for me. Hugh dubbed you the Rivendell Historian, and I'd have to agree; thanks for the delicious foods, beer, and Bridgestone Mountain Bike overview and good conversation. Mike, you are a scholarly dude with a classy adventure vehicle. Glad we could meet; thanks for the delightful conversation! Manny , you brought such a positive energy to the group. Thanks for your dad's squid, Kev's coffee, the mojo, for trading bikes, and suggesting this event! [RBW] scouting East Canyon
Hi folks, While it was Flickr friends that introduced me to the RivOwnerBunch, this is my first venture into sharing my photosets here on the forum. Thought I'd more officially iintroduce myself to my fellow Riv folks here, and maybe connect to those interested in Flickr at the same time. East Canyon is rather steep. Strava says that my overall elevation gain was 2,700 ft. although I'm not sure of my final altitude. My big epiphany on this ride: just when you think you are familiar with a particular trail you will discover a handful of things you hadn't noticed or experienced before. After lowering my tire pressure for the rough descent, reaching the bottom of the hill without any problems (except sliding out in spot - which seems to happen everytime here), I attempted to reinflate the tube. I'm not sure exactly sure if it is a broken valve or what, but this caused a flat. This was my first time getting a flat out in the wild, oddly enough, and I packed a 700c instead of 650b tube! Here's a link to those photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coconutbill/sets/72157634619229403/ This community has been a big source of inspiration in the recent months; thank you for sharing your experiences, and for reading! -Evan S. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Do you find you ride slower with Albas than with drops?
No. I recently made the swich to Albatross bars from Noodles. For me this was a big improvement in the comfort category; meaning better endurance, and therefore, going a more consistant pace. Not only did the Albatross improve steering and leverage, but the rounded part up front is perfect for agressive climbing, IMO. Thought I'd poke around for a used bag. The green hats are outta stock, but no biggy! Start is in Ventura, Up the River Trail to sulphur Mtn where it is a 10 mile dirt climb, with a great drop back into Ojai, then home through a combination of country roads and the river trail. Meet up in Ventura near Garden St and Santa Clara by 9 and hit the road around 9:30. This is a no man left behind sort of ride. We will be taking breaks for re-groups etc. I recommend 3 water bottles as a minimum for the climb up Sulphur. Tires 32mm wide for the dirt, gearing for 8-10% grades and brakes in order for the back side of the mountain are all suggested as well. We will stop at one of the many options for lunch in Ojai to grab something quick to eat and get back on the Road. This is a no host ride and not associated or sponsored by Ocean Air Cycles, just a bunch of like minded folks getting together for a fun ride. Feel free to invite friends and spread the word. The ride is all about having fun and enjoying the local scenery, pace is moderate, by no means a hammer fest, but the climbing will likely test your endurance.
