Re: [RBW] Re: Alternatives to the RH Oracle Ridge [Nutmeg Nor'Easter 2024]

2024-10-28 Thread James M
I was exhausted yesterday - the Mixed Nuts 55 was no joke - but it was a
great time. Next year I'm going to do a ride that hits J.P. Weigle's
workshop - that sounded like it was very cool.

For me (I go slow) they corner very well on pavement and I've taken
them through pretty rough New England trails with roots, rocks, etc
 and
they've held up very well with no punctures.

My new Rosco Bubbe build will have endurance knobbie RH but I
haven't tried them yet, so can't compare them.

Ronnie Romance usually posts the routes the week before the ride, including
a tire width recommendation for each route, it feels like 38/42's are

[RBW] ISO: one Fleecer Ridge tire, used a-ok

Hi, all. I want to test fit a Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge tire on the front
and rear of my original run Hunqapillar, before dropping the cash on a new
set. (I think it's going to be close - pretty sure these first Hunqs were
spec'd at 2.1") Anyone have a used tire for sale?

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: Bar Tape and/or Grips on an Albatross Bar

2024-05-09 Thread James M
I really like to use Oury grips with bar end shifters. First I slice off
the flange at the end, then I orient the grooves that run the length of the
grips so one lines up with the shifter cable. Then I use twine around the
perpendicular grooves t lock the shifter cable into place. Sorry - no
photos, but hopefully it makes sense if you look at a photo of Oury grips.
It works great!

 Hi Leah -

I would generally agree with what Ted said. Riding position and fit are
very important. But I don't think that's the only criteria I would use. I
have ten bikes. Five are Rivs. I have a Custom, Quickbeam, Roadeo, Ram and
Hubbuhubbuh. I find that geometry is important in my riding. Some bikes
 can
be more "twitchy" and/or less stable because of their geometry. Things
 like
trail, head and seat tube angles and bottom bracket drop can affect the
handling and stability of a bike. I don't get hung up on numbers, and
 judge
the handling and stability based on how a bike rides.

All of my Rivs are rock-solid stable and handle exceptionally well. I
know that the low center of gravity, trail and angles contribute to this.
Stability and handling are very important to me because I ride lots of
hills. Going uphill depends on gears, fitness and leg strength. The
stability and handling come into play going downhill. Rivs provide a level
of confidence I don't get on other bikes. You can be sure the bike will go
 where you point it.

About Albastache and Mustache bars - I have five bikes (some of them
Rivs) with Mustache and Albastache bars. I find I can get every bit as low
on Mustache and Albastache bars as on drop bars. The rest of my bikes have
drop bars. The main thing I like about drop bars is riding the hoods. On
drops, I find there are primarily three hand positions: 1) on the hoods,
 2)
on the ramps (slightly farther back than on the hoods) and 3) on the flats
on either side of the stem. I rarely get into the drops. With the
Albastache and Mustache, I find I have more riding positions.

Have fun on your road bike, whatever you get.

 Regards,

 Corwin

Another Choco-moose lover here. I had a set of Ortho bars from the first
run that I sold off. I just couldn't keep them from slipping in the stem
on trails - so much leverage! Switching over to a moose-style bar has been

Those Breezer seat sandwiches are so hard to find. I did, however, find a
3D printing plan for one that someone put on Thingiverse. I had Shapeways
print it in glass-filled nylon, and it's been working pretty well with the
B-72 on my Hunq.

wider Choco bar, with a little less sweep, which could be good for trail
riding. (I love the ChocoMoose on my Hunq, but would be nice to be able to

[RBW] Re: Bombadil and Hunqapillar origins: The definitive thread

2022-12-14 Thread James M
What are the differences between Hunqapillar generations? I have a July
2010 Waterford 62cm. Right now it's got 2.1" Schwalbe Thunder Burts. I
think getting 2.2" tires on the back would be dicey. Did the green
generation of the frame have bigger clearance? Longer wheelbase?

 specials, returns, cancels and such.

I recall also that the Bomba tubes were heat treated, not sure about
the Hunq but I'd be surprised if they were. Only GP knows what tubes cost
what. Plus the fancy lugs. I have no idea about the Hunqa frames lugs but
the Bombas sure are fancy, if that's you're thing. I don't ride a Riv for
the rep/status or the paint jobs or even the looks, I have two because
 they
fit me well and they're steel. I'm outside the bounds of most every stock
Riv bike and yet those two worked(Susie is the other). That's about it.
 I'm
 all for Practicability.

While the Hunqapillar was touted as a Bomba replacement, it was only
that in category as the frame itself was totally different in dimensions
and sizes, not to mention the diagonal tube which still looks odd to me.

Re: [RBW] Doldrums

2022-09-15 Thread James M
Interesting on Wandrer.earth - I'll have to check that out. I've been
manually mapping new roads here in NJ post-ride in Google Maps for a few
years, which is it's own kind of fun as I walk back through my recorded
routes on RWGPS to see what new segments I picked up. I love a good dead
end that there's no reason to go down - *especially* the times when you
discover a cut-through at the end to another block. This is the stuff that
makes me feel like a kid again, not a forty-something dad :)

[RBW] WTB: Brooks B67

2022-09-14 Thread James M
Hi, all. I'm looking for a decently-priced B67 or B68 for my Hunq. Color
doesn't matter that much.

I've been riding a B72, but the lack of real saddlebag loops is going to be
a problem as I move to a bigger bag in the rear. I started off with a B17
on this bike, but the wider saddles definitely work better for my setup.
(Maybe interesting to folks - I run the two-rail B72 with a copy of the
hard to find Breezer adapter 3D-printed in glass filled nylon - it's worked
pretty well!)

Johnny - can you tell me about your frame bag? Custom, I assume? I'm
about to make one for my 62cm Hunq and am debating whether to do one zipper

use will be for storing tent poles and fly rods. (Plus a frame bag just
looks perfect in that top triangle!)

Re: [RBW] Re: New-to-me Hunqapillar

2022-04-16 Thread James M
The Choco Moose have been good to me so far, but I've been riding only
lightly loaded. For the overnight we're doing next month, my load will be
pretty similar to what's in your photo. Front lowrider rack with panniers
+ basket + light load on top of the rear rack. I'll report back with how
it handles.

Thanks for the tip! I've sold a fair number of handlebars online lately

shipping rates. Anything that helps - helps!

[RBW] Re: Show me your derailleur stash

The adapter cage setup is "ok". I had it on my Motobecane restoration, set
up with 13-32 6 speed in the back, 30/46 in the front. It covered the
range fine, but the Campy rear derailleur doesn't track the shape of the
cassette the way modern derailleurs do. I swapped it out for a better
shifting Suntour V-GT Luxe.

Might as well give it a shot! Just sent you a PM.

Re: [RBW] Re: New-to-me Hunqapillar

2022-02-15 Thread James M
Thanks, all. Yes, the Hunqapillar is super cool. The Atlantis was always
the touchstone Riv for me, but I really love this wooly mammoth!

DD - yes to aesthetics on the front derailleur, but also worried about
performance with it so far from the chainrings. I guess I should give it a
try and see how it actually works though!

Hi, all. Long time lurker, only recent poster. I posted a photo in
the thread about Ron's Ortho Bars, but thought I should share more
generally. After following Rivendell and buying parts here and there for
20 years or so, here's my Hunqapillar 62cm, bought from the wonderful
 folks
at Mack's Bike and Goods, and now winding its way through the iterative,
evolutionary process of getting it to what I want it to be.

It's replacing the Surly Long Haul Trucker that I've had since 2005,
but which wasn't cutting it anymore - couldn't get as relaxed a position
 as
I wanted and couldn't fit as big a tire as I wanted. I had been using
 that
bike not for its loaded touring intention, but for mixed
pavement/gravel/light trail rides, like the last few years of the Nutmeg
Noreaster. I restored a Motobecane Grand Record last year that I can use
for my road bike, so the move to the Hunqapillar lets me have a
 do-everything bike that's a little less roadish.

The Hunqapillar came around at exactly the right time. I've built it
up with mostly parts from the bin. A couple of things that I'm working
through (and open to any suggestions on!):

 (1) The front derailleur. I'm using a triple as a double with a bash
guard replacing the outer ring, like I've done on other bikes. I'm using
an old Deore XT crank, but on a 113mm bottom bracket spindle that's way
 too
short for it. I have a 118 handy that I could easily swap in, but the
chainline for the "middle" ring seems too perfect to want to move it out.
It accommodates the 24/36t rings I want to use just fine. EXCEPT - a
vintage derailleur has to be a mile high on the seat tube to not be
 hitting
the chainstay, and a modern mountain derailleur solves that issue, but
won't come in close enough to the seat tube to shift to the small ring.
SIGH. I spent a bunch of time filing down a direct mount adapter, but
still can't get close enough. I may keep going that route, or might do
 the
inverse of the derailleur mod laid out here for quad chainring use and
 shorten a derailleur cage -
 http://abundantadventures.com/mtfaq/frontderail/fr.derail.mods.html

 (2) Handlebars. I jumped on the Ron's Ortho bar sale and was lucky
enough to get one. The problem is that it sweeps back a little too far
 for
me, even with a 120mm stem. I thought about looking for a 130, but I
 think
I need a bar with a better forward position. The Ortho bar has a little
too much rise for the forward position to work for me, or for me to mount
it upside down. It also can be a bit of a wheelie machine for me when
going up a steep hill or steep bit of trail. But now what? A friend has
 an
Albatross I may borrow to test in the flipped position, or I may look at
 the

Re: [RBW] Has anyone tried out their Uncle Ron's Orthopedic Bars?

2022-02-15 Thread James M
Hi, JP. Yep - my Hunq has a triple crankset with the outer ring replaced
by a guard, so chain is on the "middle" ring in front. I'm not great at
bike photos, although tried a little harder than usual for my first Riv
photos - but I had also just finished the exhausting climb up to the top of
the Reservation, so might not have been firing on all cylinders and just
took the shots in the gear I was in ;)

Thanks John, maybe Ronny Romance just has a huge stack of 26mm clamp
stems from the 1990s in his parts stash :-)

I bought a used Clem H in April 2021 and built it with a set of steel
Ergotec Beach cruiser bars because they were the only thing
I could find that looked even little a bit like the Ortho bars. I
really love the range of positions, and the sweep is much more natural
 than
flat mtb bars. Not so keen on the 880g weight though...

 Cheers,
 John
