[RBW] Re: Test Fit Rides

2015-02-01 Thread John Bennett
If this posted twice, apologies...

Dear Ken (and anyone in The Great NW),

The 62 Sam has arrived from RBW HQ in Walnut Creek and is now part of the
Portland Test Center Fleet, along with a 55 and a 58, and every size of
Cheviot (50-55-60).

The 62 is set up with Bosco bars, a B67 saddle, and fenders. Extremely
comfortable and practical for winter riding.

Email me (john-at-rivbike dot com) if you want to come by for a spin. As
Ken will tell you, it's mostly our garage at this point, but we're sprucing
it up in the coming weeks.

Cheers,

numbers on the bottom bracket shell, running horizontal. Some were pretty
lightly stamped and hard to read. Mine was from the first batch, too. Ol'

[RBW] Re: Rivendell owners and Jefferson Airplane...

2012-10-24 Thread John Bennett
In the 1980's, I was living at Fillmore and Sacramento in San Francisco.
One evening, after waiting for the light to change, I headed into the
crosswalk toward my apartment.

Ripping around the corner and coming to an abrupt halt a few inches from my
kneecaps was a gold Porche 911.

I made immediate and panicked eye contact with the driver, who looked more
than a little surprised himself.

It was Paul Kantner.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread John Bennett
Dear René and Bill and everyone,

Thank you for your comments and suggestions. Much appreciated. We are
working within the limitations of the system (Volusion) that allows us
to run our own web site and ordering system in-house.

"In-house" means us. Mostly Dave. There may be ways to do some of the
things that bigger businesses do with their benefits programs, and
we're continually exploring those options.

By keeping it in-house, we can also keep it affordable, which, in
turn, allows us to keep the wolf from the door in every sense of the
expression. That said, we certainly don't want to discourage business
by complicating something that should be simple.

I promise you: if there's an easier, cleaner way to do something, and
it doesn't cost a qazillion dollars to do it, that's always the way we
will be heading. Thank you for your patience and continued support
while we steer the boat in that direction.

Best regards,

John @ RBW

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread John Bennett
In retail, there's always talk of "features and benefits," so we
generally talk about rebates as a "benefit" of membership or your
purchase or whatever, but, in reality, they are a "thank you" for
buying from us, and keeping us going in a tough economy.

Thank you, one and all. We're here because of you, and we appreciate
it way more than the rebate can say.

[RBW] Re: Nuance of the rebate system

2012-02-01 Thread John Bennett
Dear William, and everyone,

The new software that we're using has made many things possible, and
has, I think, made online ordering and keeping track of purchases
easier. That said, it has changed a few things, too, and we're still
working through them.

The system has a few limitations that we're addressing, and your
illustration below may be one of those. We'll figure it out, and we
will always advise people about how to get the most from their
rebates.

The rebates have always expired (at the end of the year), and while
the new rebates technically expire sooner, the grace period is
incredibly long. One additional new benefit to membership is that once
you buy something, you're "in" forever, or for as long as we're
around, which will be a long time. We no longer charge $20 a year,
which will hopefully off-set any changes to the new rebate system.

You are always welcome to call and talk about any of this, or
anything. We're around: (800) 345-3918. If you have specific concerns
about your rebate, or how the whole thing is working, email Dave
(d...@rivbike.com). He knows this stuff inside and out.

Best regards, and thank you for your support.

[RBW] FS: New In Box Sidi Touring Shoes, Size 47.0 (which fits 11D me)

2012-01-26 Thread John Bennett
These always ran small, and I wear an 11D in normal shoes, so that's
what I would call these, give or take.

I bought these as a "back-up pair" 11 years ago, and have never worn
them. I am riding in desert boots and Jack Purcells full-time these
days, so I don't foresee needing them in the future, and I just
plunked down some dough for new suit, so.

I checked with a highly-respected Knower of These Things Up North who
said they should be priced at $150, so that's what I'm asking. $10 for
shipping and insurance.

Will take, and would prefer, a personal check from regular Forum
members. PayPal only as a last resort.

Fine print: Even though they're new, I am selling them "as-is" and
"all sales final," and they're in no way connected to my place of
employment.

Oh, here's a link with pictures:

Contact me off-list if you want them.

[RBW] Early December Rivendell Garage Sale

2011-11-16 Thread John Bennett
Date: Saturday, December 3

Time: 8:30AM-10:00AM (No one will be admitted early.)

Where: Rivendell driveway at 2040 N. Main Street, Walnut Creek.

What: Stuff that's been piling up. Odds and ends. One-offs. Some new,
some used. "As-is."

Details: Cash only. Small bills will be handy. Store won't open 'til
the sale is over.

How much: Similar in scope, merchandise-wise, but not quite as big as
last time, but enough to make it worth our and (hopefully) your while.

Not so fine print: In-person sales only. Unfortunately, the nature of
the stuff makes on-line sales impossible/
time prohibitive.

All sales final. "As-is" means no warranty, no exchanges. Thanks for
understanding.

Hope to see you there!

[RBW] Re: Riv Membership

2011-11-12 Thread John Bennett
Hi, Mike, and everyone,

Here's what we know for sure: We're not doing away with the 5% rebate
in the form of a merchandise credit or the free shipping on orders
over $150. How the rebate accrues and how quickly (sooner, not later)
you may use it is under discussion.

We're also likely keeping the special birthday offer (10% off an order
up to $300 on your birthday or the week just after it).

What we might do, though, since the new software doesn't make it easy
to do Membership Plan the old way is this: Some sort of one-time deal,
like REI does.

In other words, if you are a member now, or you have been, you will
continue to be.

We're working out something for the lifetime members, but that
specific compensation hasn't been finalized.

Thanks to everyone for past, present, and future support.

We know we wouldn't be around without it. Much appreciated.

Best regards,

John at RBW

[RBW] Part-Time Bike Packer Needed

2011-09-09 Thread John Bennett
Dear Forum Friends,

Our bike packer, Mile, has headed back to school full-time, leaving an
opening in our line-up. Vince has been filling in, but he has limited
availability, since he's a student, too.

We posted the job at the local community college, but haven't found
the right applicant yet.

If you know someone, or are related to someone local, who has 15-25
hours a week that they can work, I'd like to talk to them if they're
dependable and a quick learner.

Knowing about bikes helps, but having the right attitude trumps all.

So, if anyone comes to mind, tell them to send me a resume, or at
least an email.

Best regards, and thanks!

John (j...@rivbike.com)

*if they're a relative, knowing you gets them an interview, but it
doesn't buy any job security if they aren't hacking it.

[RBW] If at first you don't sell...

2011-09-07 Thread John Bennett
Dear Forum Friends,

I posted my Rivendell custom for sale a couple of months ago, and it
didn't get sold. I'm still not riding it, and the dough would now be
handy to cover some additional repairs on the old home front, so I
thought I'd try again.

$2650 is the *most* attractive I can make it without having too much
regret about selling it.

This is essentially the same post:

I haven't ridden it much in the 10 years I've had it. I'm not a racer,
and prefer to get around on my Saluki commuter. I am the original
owner.

The bike is fast, light, and handles great.

The frame was built by the legendary Joe Starck, and painted by the
equally legendary Joe Bell in 2001.

The frame size is 63.5cm, center-to-top, with a stand-over of 87cm.

The top tube is 58cm, measured center-to-center. The chain stays are
44.5cm.

There are some pictures, and additional specs, here on Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/63176651@N08/

The bike is clean, well-cared for, and barely ridden. It has spent the
last several years living in my office at Rivendell. I've never used
an odometer, so I can't tell you just how many miles it *doesn't* have
on it, but it isn't many.

Email me with any questions, or if you need more photos.

Cheers, and thanks for looking,

[RBW] Rivendell Job Opening, Shipping Department.

2011-08-07 Thread John Bennett
As regular readers of the site know, Vaughn is moving on, first to
Japan, and then back to Colorado, his old stomping grounds. We need to
replace him. Here's our ad. It sounds pretty blunt, I know, but I
figured it was better to be straight at the beginning than 6 months
down the road.

If you know anyone who might fit the bill, send them my way. If you
fit the bill, send me your resume. And thank you.

Shipper, F/T

This is not a dead-end job, far from it, but it's not a stepping
stone, either. We're looking for someone who wants a job in the
shipping department, not a person who is biding their time until they
can design frames, assemble bikes, or wait on customers.

Any knowledge of bikes and parts will be useful, since you'll be
picking and boxing them. But strictly, it is not necessary, as long as
you can learn.

We want someone who needs a job, likes cardboard as much (if not more)
than bikes, doesn't require a huge salary to get by in the Bay Area,
and is ready to commit to long-term employment.

It's hot in the summer, cold in the winter. 50-90 packages a day. No
back-up. When the other shipper is gone, you're it. Punctuality,
dependability, and maturity required.

Unglamorous, but good work. Benefits after 90 days. Commuter Checks if
you don't live close. 401K. 8:30-4:30. Monday through Friday. $25K/
year.

Send resume and cover letter to John. j...@rivbike.com

[RBW] When Pricing My Custom, I Fell Under The Spell of Persuasive Price Advisor

2011-05-23 Thread John Bennett
...who said he thought my bike was worth tons of dough because Joe
Starck built it. I have no doubt about that; Joe *is* legendary, and
the bike is beyond great, but I want to sell the machine to someone
who will use it.

With that in mind, I revised the price to $3250 for a cash-on-the-
barrel-head local buyer, or $3500 (includes shipping and PayPal fees)
for an out-of-towner.

Questions, reply here offline, and I will answer.

Thanks for looking.

John

Here's my post from last week, with a link to pictures and more info:

==

Dear Forum Friends,

The time has come to sell my Rivendell custom. I thought I would start
here, before branching out to a wider audience (read: eBay).

I haven't ridden it much in the 10 years I've had it. I'm not a racer,
and prefer to get around on my Saluki commuter and my Atlantis. I am
the original owner.

Cheers,

John Bennett

[RBW] Re: Selling My Rivendell Custom

One other thing: It has MKS Royal Nuevo pedals, Christophe toe clips,
and Cinelli top straps. Those dang pedals ran $90+ ten years ago.
I have a second pair if anyone has been looking for them.

[RBW] Selling My Rivendell Custom

2011-05-20 Thread John Bennett
Dear Forum Friends,

The time has come to sell my Rivendell custom. I thought I would start
here, before branching out to a wider audience (read: eBay).

I haven't ridden it much in the 10 years I've had it. I'm not a racer,
and prefer to get around on my Saluki commuter and my Atlantis. I am
the original owner.

The chainstays are

Asking price is $4,000.

Cheers,

John Bennett

[RBW] Re: Time to order the new paper Reader yet?

2011-05-18 Thread John Bennett
Dear Doug and everyone,

If you want *just* a paper copy, send $5 cash (easier to deposit,
thanks) to Rivendell Reader PO Box 5289, Walnut Creek CA 94596, along
with a good-sized address label (handwritten, typed, or word
processed) that we can tape on the back.

When the new one is ready, we will fire one off to you as soon as we
can.

If you are ordering AFTER the Readers come out (a few more weeks)
along with other stuff, you can order them as part of a regular
order.

Sorry for the hoops. It's primitive, but effective.

Thanks!

Dear Steve and all,

We will have a PDF of the Reader in the next week or so. This was a

We need to do a final final proofreading of it, but wanted to add it

[RBW] Re: If you have a minute, please read this - NYTimes article

2011-03-03 Thread John Bennett
Thanks, Jim. Apologies, Bicycle Bill.

We try hard not to start anything here that is not RBW-specific, and
maybe this is borderline, I don't know.

That said, it was something we thought was important, and we wanted to
get it out as quickly as possible because many of our customers have
given generously to SmileTrain, and figured folks might be reading
this forum more often than checking our web logs.

As Jim said, we wanted to be ahead of the story, and pro-active in
covering the changes at a charity that we feel strongly about, and
have promoted on our web site (which is extremely RBW-specific, in
case you haven't visited it recently).

Now, back to the regularly scheduled program, already in progress

Thank you!

[RBW] Re: Speaking of the garage sale,

2010-09-28 Thread John Bennett
CM:

While we would like to do a Virtual Garage Sale, the reality is that
it would probably be impossible.

To be fair to the Virtual Buyers, the sort of stuff that we sell at
the Actual Garage Sale would require extensive photographs; written
descriptions; determinations and disclaimers about the condition,
variations, and imperfections of the items; the creation of new part
numbers, etc., and other inestimable considerations to make it as fair
and customer-friendly to you, and as manageable as possible for us.

A lot of this stuff really requires in-person inspection, and even
then, we have to stick to our All Sales Final policy. Doing it online,
and asking for the same no return deal, could get sticky in ways that
we don't feel comfortable with.

We do post "Web Specials." We have "Frame Specials."

Thank you for understanding. Come on out sometime!

All the best,

John at RBW HQ

Hey, Mitch,

Yep, cash. We're going to divide up the stuff by price point, post a
Riv employee in each area, and (like last time), you pay for what you
want in that section, and then move on to the next pile of stuff- with
your purchase, and minus your cash.

It's a simple system.

Of course, exceptions can be made for items exceeding $1000. I guess I
better check and see if we have any items exceeding $1000.

Bottom line- Kash Is King!
