I'm on the fence for a Cheviot. I'm sure with longer wheel base and chain

comfortable.

[RBW] Re: Car-free week

2016-06-15 Thread Jon in central Colorado
Happy no one was hurt...
I have a similar story...go back 49 years...
Just got my license was rolling to a stop sign with a car in front of me.
Creeping closer, not paying attention I tapped the car in front of me. It
broke the tail light lens on her car.
Just to show how prices have escalated the tail light lens cost $2.50.
The $2.50 was nothing.I could pay out of my allowance. The worst part
was I had to deliver the money to her husband. You see...she was married to
my Drivers Ed teacher.
Handing over that money to him was a whole semester of Drivers Ed wrapped
up in 10 minutesLesson learned I have had no accidents that have been
my fault since that day.
My mom's car was still drivable but my parents forced me to ride my bike
for a month.
Not trying to hijack your thread. Just a funny ( now) story.
I'm sure your daughter will remember her accident for ever too!

I've been running the Little Big Bens 700c-38s on my Sam since day one with

They go through anything.Snow ,mud, sand, gravel and not noisy on pavement.
I don't even think about them.
I can't compare them to anything else. It's all I've ridden. I'm at the
stage in my life I'd rather not deal with flats on the trail.

[RBW] Re: HIgh Line Canal on a beautiful Sunday

2016-07-04 Thread Jon in central Colorado
Derek,
If you come south on I-25 exit Hampton and go west to Colorado.Turn left
then turn right into the First Plymouth Congressional church parking lot
and go to the back of the parking lot you will be facing Jefferson Ave. The
paved trail goes along Jefferson to the gravel portion of High Line Canal.
When you get to the gravel turn left and you are on your way. .You will
cross about 6 or so many streets over 19 miles but they have pedestrian
signs to cross or there is very little car traffic and no problem
crossing. It's a beautiful section to ride and not crowded..even on the
weekends
Maybe we could meet for coffee out sometime or just ride.
Here's a map of the church parking and the trail.

2016-07-12 Thread Jon in central Colorado
Clayton, Irving, Eric,
Thanks!
Clayton,
Did you keep the R559 brake on the rear?
With the 50s do you have to deflate the tire to install ?
I'm getting a 60 cm Cheviot and was looking at the 50 Big Bens no fenders.

[RBW] THANKS CHEVIOT OWNERS

2016-07-13 Thread Jon in central Colorado
Thanks all!!!
An interesting discussion on tires used on your Cheviot. Deflating the tire
to remove the wheel it isn't a big deal.I don't get many flats and I don't
plan on using fenders.
I have Little Bens on my Sam with R559s and I have to wiggle the wheel a
bit to get the wheel installed when inflated to 55psi.I'd like to go with
50s.
This is a great place for help!

That's a clean looking bike. Love the matte finish.
Do you have to deflate the tires to remove the 47 wheels???
You will enjoy that bike for sure.

[RBW] Re: Jeff Archer, Owner of First Flight Bicycles

2016-07-25 Thread Jon in central Colorado
This is a very sad tragedy.
Unfortunately it's become an epidemic across the country. Not only for
cyclists but pedestrians, and other drivers.
Often the drunk driver has 2-10 previous D.U.I.s.
Why are these people still behind the wheel?
You can help call or write your elected officials and tell them the
penalties for drunk driving are too soft .

[RBW] Re: Cheviot (or Sam)

2016-08-09 Thread Jon in central Colorado
These posts make me happy I ordered a Cheviot.
I have never ridden one.
I tried to talk my wife into a 55cm so she could ride along with me on my
Sam. She said no. So I ordered a 60cm for myself. Snooze she loses.
I'm excited to see the difference between the Sam and Cheviot. The Cheviot
probably not as responsive in the corners but expect it to be as
comfortable or more than the Sam.
They will be set up almost identically. A spring saddle for the Cheviot.
Chomping at the bit!

 Hi folks,

I had the opportunity to spend a few hours at Riv HQ a few Saturday's
ago. I had a wonderful time - I rode four bikes (Clem, Cheviot, Sam and
Hubbuhubbah), and walked away with a medium saddlesack bag. Still smile
when I think about the fun I had. Most of my riding (about an hour) was
done on the Clem. I enjoyed the ride, but it did not really speak to me.
Perhaps it was just too different from the bikes that I typically ride.
Strangely enough, the bike that emerged as my favorite was the Cheviot. I
can't seem to get it out of my head. In fact, ever since I returned home,
I have been trying to figure out if I loved the Chev enough to purchase
 one
before they go away. Here is my situation.

About ten years ago I had a custom-built Bob Brown Cycle made for me.
I nearly bought a Rambouillet, but chose Bob Brown instead. It was my
poor-man's red convertible that I got for my 40th birthday. That bike
complimented my circa 1990 Trek 520 quite well. My Bob Brown was
quick-ish, sporty and fun to ride. However, as the years went by, I found
it to be increasingly uncomfortable for longer ride. Two years ago I
bought a Black Mountain Road bike. This bike has a bit more relaxed
geometry. I really love this bike - it is much more comfortable than Bob
Brown, and has become the bike that I grab most often. In fact, Bob Brown
typically sees the road only once or twice a year - it is typically the
bike that I use on my indoor trainer. My Trek 520 has been turned into a
grocery-getter. However, it does not bring me a great deal of joy to
 ride,
but it gets the job done.

In my mind, I see the Cheviot as a replacement for my Trek 520. Nearly
all of the components that I have on the Trek would easily transfer to the
Chev - meaning that my initial output of cash would be only for the frame.

I've read through everything that I can find on the list about the
Cheviot. I would love to hear impressions from those who have had the
 bike
long term. Likes? Dislikes? Dealing with the "guy on a girl's bike"
thing is perhaps an issue. However, as I approach 50 I see the benefit of
the lower top tube. Besides, when I rode the Cheviot in Walnut Creek, I
did not even think about the fact that I was riding a mixte, as I was
 simply enjoying the ride.

I live in a small town in western New York - with short rides (mile or
two) to the co-op grocery store, library, post office, etc. This is the
type of riding, along with occasional paved and/or gravel path
