[RBW] WTB: 62cm Hunqapillar Frame & Fork

2020-05-22 Thread Keith Muller
Hey all,

I’m looking for a 62cm Hunqapillar frame and fork. I only want the frame and
fork. I don’t need any parts or a complete bike. I’m looking for a Waterford
produced Hunq. Paint condition doesn’t mater, though I’d prefer something that
doesn’t have nice paint. I’m planning on doing some modifications to the
frame, so the paint will be coming off. Let me know if you have anything.

Thanks,

Keith

Re: [RBW] Joe Starck Rivendell Custom

2019-06-06 Thread Keith Muller
Dave,

I live in Lawrence. I own and operate CycleFix mobile bike repair. We have
two Rivs in our household(Hunqapillar and Cheviot). I think at some point I
would like to try and organize a RBW meetup Kansas edition.

[RBW] Re: FS: Rivish Surly Long Haul Trucker

2019-02-24 Thread Keith Muller
Update:

Summer is coming soon enough. I've dropped the price on this bike to
$1900. That includes shipping it to you. If I don't get any traction on
it, then I'm gonna start piecing it out.

Thanks,

Keith

[RBW] Washington, D.C. Rides/Recommendations.

2018-10-21 Thread Keith Muller
I second a nighttime tour of the mall and monuments via bike. The Roosevelt
monument is my favorite to see in the dark. The Lincoln memorial is pretty
good at night also. During the day I would also recommend the National
Arboretum in NE DC. DC is a great city to see via bike.

Philip,

The fenders take a little tweaking to get them play well with the BG RNRs. But
they work pretty well. I’ve been happy with the setup.

plate.

2017-11-05 Thread Keith Muller
Hey All,

I hate to do this, but I am selling my Sage Green 64cm Rivendell
Rambouillet Frameset. Includes headset. I purchased this frame with the
intent to build it up, but I have some other projects to finish up first
and I just ended up purchasing a Campagnolo Master Tool Kit. I could use
the cash to finish other projects before this one. Frameset is in great
shape. Usual wear and tear for a frame of it's age. Some paint chips on
the non-driveside chainstay are the only issue. No rust issues though.
$800 plus shipping is what I would like to see for it. Please DM me with
any questions or offers.

[RBW] Mickelson Trail Bike Camping

2017-09-14 Thread Keith Muller
Sergio,

Me and my wife try to ride the Mickelson Trail every year. It's a wonderful
ride. We usually do it in two days and have plenty of time to stop and
explore. We always ride it north to south(Deadwood to Edgemont). We are going
to be riding it in a couple weekends.

Places of interest:

Moonshine Gulch in Rochford - bar/restaurant that has greasy burgers and cold
beers. They also have random locals play music on Sundays.

Alpine Inn in Hill City - owned by a German lady, they have a German lunch menu
that's tasty. The dinner menu is pretty simple, big or small steak. They have
a huge desert menu, which is what they are known for. They are closed on
Sundays.

If you have three days, I'd say ride Deadwood to Hill City day one. Stay in
Hill City and spend day two riding in the area and exploring. You've got Mt
Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park not to far away. You will ride by
Crazy Horse on your way to Custer.

Maybe spend night two in Custer and finish out day three to Edgemont. The ride
out onto the prairie to Edgemont is one of my favorite parts of the ride.

There is lots to do and see. The ride is overall pretty easy. I'd say the
toughest part is Deadwood to the Dumont Trailhead. But it's still not that
bad.

This is hands down my Favorite rails-to-trail Trail.

They do require all users by a trail pass. $3 per day or $10 annually. That
money goes to maintaining the trail.

October is a really great time of the year to ride the Mickelson Trail. Nice
during the day, and cools off at night. Don't forget your favorite sweatshirt
for the nighttime.

If you have any other questions, let me know.

[RBW] FS: SON28 Dynamo/XT Wheelset

2017-09-01 Thread Keith Muller
Hey all,

I have a wheelset that I'm looking to sell.

Front Hub: Schmidt SON28 Dynamo, Silver, 36H, QR
Rear Hub: Shimano Deore XT FH-T780, Silver, 36H, QR
Rims: Velocity NOBS, Silver, 36H
Spokes: Wheelsmith 14/15g Double Butted, Silver
Nipples: DT Swiss 14g Brass, Silver, 12mm
Rim Strips: Velox

Photos Available on My Google Drive:
 https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-2NeF-6iHHVeURPeTEtdmxLb3M

These wheels were built by me. I've been building wheels for over 20
years. They are true, round, dished, and tensioned properly. I've had
these wheels on my Appaloosa for about a year and a half. These wheels
maybe have seen a thousand miles of use since my Appaloosa was my back up
bike. Brake tracks are in great shape and there are many many more miles
left in this wheelsets life. $425 will get it shipped to you. I can find
you a set of skewers to go with the wheels, but you gotta ask for them and

[RBW] Re: Hunqapillar Drivetrain Upgrade

2017-08-10 Thread Keith Muller
Bill and all,

I've been really pleased with the M30 Crankset. Definitely a great option
for your MTB.

After some riding. The gear range is more than appropriate for the riding
that I do. I think the Eagle GX is a great budget option for people, but
there are fewer hub options because of the XD driver body.

The gear range is in no way limiting. I do acknowledge that the Eagle XX1
kit is expensive, if I was on a tighter budget, I would go with the Eagle
GX kit. Durability we will see about. I did run a 11-speed XX1 kit on my
MTB and had no issues on the durability front.

As for wheel dish. The has the exact same dish as any modern cassette body
hub. OLD on the rear hub is 135mm. The way the cassette is designed, the
last couple cogs are dished in over the drive-side hub flange.

As always, gearing is a personal preference in some regards. This setup
works really well for me and my needs/desires. Simplified on the gear
selection, choices are 1-12. Less parts to deal with, and a cleaner setup
in my eyes.

[RBW] Hunqapillar or Appaloosa?

2017-08-01 Thread Keith Muller
Michelle,

I own a Hunqapillar, an Atlantis, and an Appaloosa. My Hunqapillar is by far
my favorite bike. The Hunqapillar has a longer top tube so it works better
with flat or swept-back bars. The Appaloosa has a little shorter top tube, but
it's also a bike that works well with flat or swept-back bars.

Personally I like the nicer details and look of the Hunqapillar, but it's also
$1000+ more than the Appaloosa.

If budget is a concern, get the Appaloosa. If not, go for the Hunqapillar.
Both will ride well. I've done many of the same things with both bikes and
have never thought to myself that I missed out by not being on the other bike.

At the end of the day, they are both bikes. You'll be happy either way. Just
make sure what ever bike it is, that you like the color.

Cheers,

Keith

[RBW] FS: 36H Mavic A719 Rims

2017-06-28 Thread Keith Muller
Hey all!

I have a pair of lightly used Mavic 36H A719 Rims I'm looking to sell. These
rims were built into a wheelset that was a back up for me and have seen very
little use. Brake tracks could pass as new. Stickers are the only thing that
isn't perfect. No dents and they are straight like they should be. I pulled
these wheels apart to use the hubs on a new wheel build. I'll take pics and
post them tomorrow. $100 will get them shipped to you. DM me with questions
or offers.

Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-14 Thread Keith Muller
If this conversation is about hubs and money is not an object, then let me
throw my two cents in the pot.

I have two bikes with White Industries rear hubs, two bikes with Chris King
classic rear hubs, and one bike with an XT touring hub.

The white industries hubs are great, my only complaint is they seem to really
chew through bearings on the non-drive side of the hub. That's the only
bearing that I've had to replace on those hubs. Great value, beautiful
product.

My favorite has been the Chris King Classic hub. Both of my hubs have the
upgraded stainless drive shell and one piece axle. They are tough and durable.
They are easy to adjust, and the seals on the bearings keep crap out.
Maintenance on the bearings take a special tool, but taking the freehub body
off for cleaning and maintenance only requires simple allen wrenches. Any good
shop will have the king hub tool for the more complicated bearing maintenance.
Price for the King classic hub with upgraded driveshell and axle is north of
$500. But if money isn't an issue, then why not shoot for the moon!

Keith

PS the XT hub is shit! Shit I tell you!

[RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)

2017-05-29 Thread Keith Muller
So I have 5 bikes at the moment.

Hunqapillar w/ bullmoose bars
Atlantis w/ albastache bars
Appaloosa w/ albatross bars
Salsa Vaya Travel w/ drop bars
Salsa Colosal Ti w/ drop bars

My Hunqapillar is by far my favorite bike I own/have owned! Every time I get
on it, it just feels so magical! Taking my Hunqapillar for a ride erases a bad
day! I always say if I could only have one bike, it'd be my Hunqapillar. I
would say keep the Hunqapillar and Sam and sell the other ones if you have to.
Maybe us the Sam as a display in the baby's room. 2 birds 1 stone.

Selling bikes sucks! Especially with the circumstances.

Congrats on the baby coming.

[RBW] Atlantis! Tire question

2017-05-21 Thread Keith Muller
I've been running Bruce Gordon Rock N Roads on my 64cm Atlantis with fenders.
They are a 43c label width and measure about 43mm on a mavic a719 rim. When
I'm not running fenders, I like running schwalbe thunder berts in a 2.1" width.
2.1" wide tires work great without issues of toe overlap. I get toe overlap
running fenders with 2.1s. Running 43c tires with fenders, gives me just the
right amount of clearance so I don't get any toe overlap.

Hope that helps!

into an Atlantis, then you ride an Appaloosa and take that home. Then you get
the wife a Cheviot. It can be quite the rabbit hole! A fun rabbit hole!

As the title says, i'm looking for the olive color. DM me if you have

[RBW] Re: Atlantis vs Appaloosa

2016-08-22 Thread Keith Muller
I have an Appaloosa, a Hunqapillar, and an Atlantis. They are all great
bikes! They all ride just a little different. My Appaloosa is setup with
a Albatross bar, Hunqapillar has a Bullmoose bar, and my Atlantis is setup
with drop bars. I like the way they all ride in different respects, though
I would say my favorite of the three is the Hunqapillar. It is just so
much fun to ride the way I have it setup. Either option will be a great
ride. If you really want an Atlantis though, pinch your pennies and save
your money up. It is worth the price of admission. You might be able to
find a used Atlantis and save some money that way.

[RBW] Hunq porteur options?

2016-07-03 Thread Keith Muller
Jay,

The Surly 24-Pack rack won't work on the Hunq. I purchased one and tried it.
To make it work, the rack ends up sitting about 4 inches above the top of the

high on the Hunq fork.

I would chase the BB shell and any of the eyelets that you want to use. Brake
bosses are pretty clean when they arrive. I would also sand the paint off of
the face any eyelets you plan on using. When you tighten a rack stay or
accessorie to the eyelet, I have found that the paint on the face of the eyelet
has a tendency to crack.

I have been running Mavic A719s for some time. They are double eyeleted, and

[RBW] Schmidt hub drag on my newish hub?

2016-06-24 Thread Keith Muller
In a sense yes, but once the hub is spinning at a higher speed the drag is
hardly noticeable. Your spin test in a repair stand is far from replicating
real world use and conditions. Electricity is not free, even coming from a
dynamo hub. If you want the convenience of a self sufficient lighting system
there is some efficiency you give up in other departments, though I'd argue
that they aren't worth arguing about(hehe)!

[RBW] Schmidt hub drag on my newish hub?

2016-06-24 Thread Keith Muller
I have 3 bikes with SON28 hubs. That vroom and vibration is caused by the
magnetic polls of the generator and is perfectly normal. Switch the light off
when while you spin the wheel and you will feel a change in the vibration.
Also, make sure your front skewer is plenty tight. If it's loose, that can
make the vibration and noise worse.
