Maybe check with a frame builder and ask if you can do a custom with the
frame. Maybe cheaper than a new bike?

[RBW] Rivendell West and East Meet Up

2018-08-07 Thread Manuel Acosta
This list has been a shinning light of my life. Meeting so many new people
from so many different parts of the world. Sharing a connection of a great
bike company and great ethos its great to have a connection with folks with
Rivendell because you always know you'll meet great people.

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions and a very special thanks to
Takashi for taking the time to travel 4 hours come to Toyko to meet us! Not
only did he recommend the Hatagaya Blue Lug store and the Lug Cafe he also
sent the lovely folks at Blug Lug an email that we were coming.

Having the time to hang out with Takashi for a short while was a huge
highlight of the trip so far. We shared stories of our experiences with
Rivendell and our connection to amazing quality and functional goods made
us gravitated towards Rivendell which is a common theme when I meet most
people connected with Rivendell.

The folks at Blug Lug were gracious and helpful at both locations. I was
telling Takashi Blue Lug reminds me of Rivendell with more dangles and
slight touches that make it their own. When we first got there we met
Felipe who recognized me because of my Lucky Duck Cafe Shirt and mutual
friends from Oakland and his Clint from Velo Orange who were outside of
blue lug trying to put their bikes together. We ended up seeing each other
at the Lug Cafe and having a coffee and sharing our stories with Takashi.

Sadly Takashi had to leave early so we took one last photo together
before parting ways. We went back the the shop
and was helped by Chuyan who I found out hanged out and stayed with Will
and Roman! He was super helpful and made Ashley and I so welcome. This
being my wife first international trip I was explaining to her that
traveling anywhere and opening yourself up to people around you can yield
experiences and friendships that can last a lifetime! Thanks again to
Takashi for the taking the time to share your day and you stories. You
always have a friend here in the states!

Pictures proved that Rivendell brings people together

Got a good used large sackville one side zipper is broken. Might be able to

You could take cycling hat and repurpose it for you needs.

John Potis from SF Randonneurs had a great idea for making a bucket hat

https://flic.kr/p/uynx63

He also tried a bill on both sides.

https://flic.kr/p/pa6KKp

Reminds me of one of the pedicabers who had a deerstalker hat wool and
swore by it for biking folks around.

I recently got a Little League Umpire hat that works well when off the bike
in front of children.

[RBW] Classy s240 and tandem tragedy averted.

2016-03-22 Thread Manuel Acosta
House buying stuff is winding down. And losing sleep due to all the stress.
Felt that it was good time to spent my last weekend sleeping outside.

Typical after rain muddiness and cow ruttyiness was the price we paid for
amazing morning of no fog and beautiful sunrise.

Stopped by RivHQ and BBH because one of my buddies Chris wanted to check
out the new Appaloosas.
We tested rode around the local hills and it was hard getting Chris off of
his.
He says it rides down hills well and new bar was comfortable.

The next day out a tandem trip and "tricked" the wife the bike the tandem
down to see friends and have a picnic.
Her first time on muddy dirt fire-roads. She did not appreciate the mud but
ice cream is always a good apology.
Our ride back felt bumpy and I thought we blew out a spoke but sure enough
the side wall in the rear was dangerously ripped up.
Had the wife get picked up and went to a local bike shop to replace the
tire.

Good to be back in the saddle.

Pictures proved that blown sidewalls are bad things

[RBW] Mashley Overnight #2 New Brighton.

2015-09-12 Thread Manuel Acosta
On my first bike tour down the coast one of our last stops was at New
Brighton.

A magical place where the hiker/biker campsite sit above a bluff with a
short trail down the the beach where campfires and beautiful ocean await.

I always known from that moment that place was special. Last year reality
came true when I got to propose to my wife near that same spot I camped
alone those so many year ago.

We return a year later but this time by bike!

One thing you need to know about my wife is that she never really grew up
going outside. So to even get her outside on a bike let alone camping is a
huge deal.

We did a super short trip with mid-ride ice cream stoppage.

Got to the campground early so enjoyed the beach with the family.

Once camped share smores and we dropped the few hot dogs we had in the fire.

Love that we got to share the place together.

Pictures Proved that Tandem Camping is still pretty hard:

[RBW] Re: Weekend s24o report - Waist deep swamp! Poison Ivy! Bloody and Bruised!

So this weekend I had an opportunity to head out on a quick s24o with my
two friends Graham and Jason. We decided we'd head out on Saturday toward a
lovely Provincial Park about 40km outside of the city.

We met at Graham's house at 7:30pm. On my way there, I took my usual route
along a bit of single track along the banks of the Red River. En route, I
passed four 'bros' snorting cocaine off a frisbee together. I have to say,
 that was a 'first'.

I arrived while Graham was finishing packing up. He had just hooked up a
'suicide shifter' for his front derailleur, located on the seat tube. He
 was pretty excited about it.

Jason showed up shortly after and we hit the road. On the way we found a
series of pallets setup for an excavator. It made for a pretty fun
 diversion.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-da2PhrR0drg/VcjFon1VO8I/LzA/evn7RQiqEwc/s1600/_DSC4504.jpg

We zigzagged around a number of new-to-me river trails until we were out
of the city. As we made our way across the prairies we were treated to a
 beautiful sunset.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EoHzGe5Bhps/VcjGBwuf4-I/LzI/kwq4Yy0mizM/s1600/_DSC4510.jpg

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m4VWnXYqhDs/VcjGOXcat1I/LzQ/SB2EKIuDPxo/s1600/_DSC4515.jpg

As the sun set, the bugs came out. And they came like a plague. There were
so man mosquitoes that the idea of camping seemed ludicrous. So after
consulting a map, we decided we'd make for a small wooden warming shack in
the far corner of the park that is typically used as a warming station of
snowmobiles and skiers. I'd been to cabins like this before and they're
usually pretty nice - wood stove, stack of fire wood, sometimes even an
outhouse. It sounded like a great plan. So we hit the park trails in the
dark and went hunting for the cabin.

It started well. The trail had knee-high grass as it wasn't used in summer
(was a dedicated snowmobile trail), but the ground was quite smooth. We
descended for about 20 minutes, which made me nervous. It's a boggy part of
the country, and going down means getting wet. Sure enough, the trail got a
bit mushy. Then really mushy. My headlight suddenly hit something that
reflected the light back up into the trees. Crap - the trail disappeared
into a bog! We couldn't see how far it went, and any time spent standing
around would result in hoards of mosquitoes attacking us, so we said screw
it and pedalled full speed into the water. Thankfully it ended 20 feet
later around the corner and the ground was hard enough to ride. We hit a
few of these water sections, some of which were too deep to ride and
required carrying our bikes across to avoid water getting into our
bearings. Half an hour later and a good bit of fumbling around in the
woods, we found the cabin. We celebrated our victory, hung our shoes up to
dry and passed around a few beers. Tomorrow we'd try to finish the trail
 and ride home.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vFjfcRcx4QE/VcjH4yEaRCI/Lzc/Orly3gOy17o/s1600/_DSC4520.jpg

We woke up to a warm sunny morning and the sounds of squirrels running
around the roof of the cabin. Jason had got up at 5am to ride to work for 7
(bummer!) and had taken a trail directly to the highway outside the park.
So it was just Graham and I left to finish the trail.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YfSnmOS3RAo/VcjIf4U6kHI/Lzk/egfQqirsqQ4/s1600/_DSC4526.jpg

We hit the trail and were immediately into the marsh again.

 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-DU8M1ppVNCc/VcjI90QoJqI/Lzs/II9zPlom67k/s1600/_DSC4531.jpg

We can do this, I thought. It's just wet boots. However, soon enough we
hit *The Bog*. This was a whole new obstacle - the trail ended and there
was about 75 yards of water and reeds. Keep in mind, this trail is meant
for winter, so it was built with no regard to water crossings. There is
nothing that bugs me as much as being forced to turn back, so thinking to
myself What Would Manny Do, I took a few exploratory steps into *The
 Bog. *

The ground was mushy and it was deep. Soon I had to shoulder my bike to
keep it out of the water, but I pushed on.

About half way, I suddenly my left foot sank up to my knee in mud, and

tried to pull my left foot out but it was not happening. It was like the
ground was sucking me down. Graham had waited near the bog entrance to see

[RBW] Stolen Fuji Touring bike in San Diego.

2015-07-26 Thread Manuel Acosta
For those San Diego folks.. 3ish hours old.

Sad news about good buddy Nick Sigmon. Who was on his first bike tour on
his one month year old Fuji Touring bike.

Friends, I have some sad news to share: yesterday in Long Beach, my bike
(Rosa) and much of my gear were stolen, so I will be completing my trip to
SD via Greyhound. Fortunately I had my wallet, keys, phone, ipad, Garmin,
and (thank goodness) my journal with me when it happened. I still had such
a wonderful trip these past few days, so much more fun than I even
anticipated, I would not trade it for anything. There were always some
serious risks with a trip like this and I am very thankful to be alive and
well. Plus I was fortunate to be in Long Beach with my cousin Kyle
https://www.facebook.com/savyjap, who has been taking care of me (food,
shelter, and clothing, since all I had was the cycling kit I was wearing).
The stuff can all be replaced, though the sentimental value is what really
hurts. I definitely do not intend to let this taint my incredible
experience. I absolutely intend to get another touring bike and do this
trip again, and other touring trips, perhaps every summer; it has probably
been the most enjoyable experience of my life, and that is saying
something!

More info about the information.
Some details about the theft: I was at a Von's for awhile writing in my
journal while my cousin was cutting hair. I locked my bike right out front,
in broad daylight, under a sign that said the area was under video
surveillance. When I came out it was gone. The video saw a guy come up on a
bike, chop my lock, ride off on my bike, then come back for his (which
makes it sound more like a drug addict than a professional bike thief). The
cops do sound surprisingly hopeful that it may show up eventually, either
at a pawn shop or under someone who does not look like they should have
such a nice bike. I lost the headlamp that my father had given me; the
solar panel and energy bank that my brother had given me; Tamra
https://www.facebook.com/tamra.ruxin?hc_location=ufi's copy of the book
Thrive, which I was borrowing; the tarp that had sheltered me for 3 epic
nights; a sweatshirt that I had won in a race; a $50 giftcard to movin'
shoes that I had won from a race; four pairs of cycling shorts and a jersey
that I had been given from sponsors; my tomtom one that I had gotten many
years ago after staying out all night with my cousin and brother at Black
Friday, which had been my only companion on too many trips to count; and of
course my 1-month old bike, Rosa, whom I had grown to love dearly. I
usually try not to get attached to material possessions, but I struggle at
that when it comes to bicycles. Maybe that is the lesson here: perhaps I
should not name my bikes and talk to them so much. I really like that bike
model (Fuji Touring) and would want to get the same one, but I could never
ride that bike again without thinking of Rosa (and feeling like I let her
down by not keeping her safe). But again, I am just so grateful to be alive
and well, and I feel so incredibly fortunate to have had such a wonderful
trip! So many people showed me incredible kindness, including strangers;
overall my faith in the goodness of mankind in general still increased from
this trip. I will not let the actions of one poor, messed up guy upset me.
I honestly feel bad for anyone who would steal (especially a loaded touring
bike with a Micky Mouse stuffed animal sitting on the back -- a road token
I had found just before I stopped the first night, which made for an
excellent pillow). I wish them no ill-will; I do wish them all the best,
that they might be able to find happiness in life. I sincerely hope that
stealing my bike can somehow help them to do so.

For those folks around the area please keep an eye out.

[RBW] Re: tandem captain advice?

2015-07-20 Thread Manuel Acosta
Having only had the Mashley Tandem for so long I know just as much I can
read.

This was a great read.

From Bill McCready of Santana Tandems.

This might be somewhat OT, but I thought I would ask the few of you who
are tandem captains what advice you would give to a new captain. It has
 been a while...

A charity ride is coming up this Saturday, and it's at night, and since
I'm night-blind, a friend of mine has offered to captain the tandem. I
fixed one up, and we rode around a few times.
 Here's what I know:

 On starting:
-captain gets on first, feet on ground
-stoker gets on, puts feet on pedal
 -captain starts

 On stopping:
 -captain puts feet down first?
-stoker puts feet down, and gets off
 -captain gets off

 On turning:
 both lean, right?

Part of the problem is that my friend is shorter than I am by 2-4 inches,
which may influence her handling. We have no problem riding around, just
not so great on starting and stopping.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Thats how those rumors start and reputations are made.

Soon folks will start calling them Eunice Rides where they will say you
don't just get dropped you get abandoned. Saying you'll break cameras on

These rides actually sound like a lot of fun!

Keep the ride reports coming. Truly inspiring!

On Friday, July 10, 2015 at 7:15:20 PM UTC-7, Eunice Chang wrote:

I've been meaning to write this since last year.

Most of you know Seth Vidal, who frequented RBW list and who was killed in
a hit and run two years ago. One of the things he liked was the ride
reports. He'd share them with me and we'd plan rides.

I joined the list a few months after he died, mostly just to update the
group, but I've also read some of your ride reports, and they were very,
very helpful on getting me back on the bike and rediscovering a new, but
different, kind of joy that only bicycles can provide. I thought I'd
contribute as well. It's also my small way of saying thanks for your
 support, intentional or not.

I've organized rides of remembrance on the day he died, and I rode his
Hilsen in both cases. This year, a friend of mine borrowed my QB for the
memorial ride so two Rivs were well represented. :)

The ride was roughly 2 miles- it was just a slow roll through the
neighborhood to the area where Seth was killed, to where the ghost bike
was, have a moment of silence, and then through a very short trail along
Ellerbee Creek and back to the starting point. We went to a pub later. The
most amazing thing was that when we all lined up in front of the ghost
bike, traffic actually slowed down (it almost never does- it's a 35 mph but
since it leads to highways on both ends, most folks go 45-50).

I led the ride, but I am a terrible ride leader. Last year, I rode really
fast ahead of the pack and it became a joke (after years of riding the
tandem and having Seth tell me to pedal harder, it's kind of hard to break
the habit). This year a friend took me for an impromptu 14 mile ride the
day before and another friend made sure I had a few beers in before the
ride. I apparently still went too fast, and someone kind of had to chase me
down to make sure I waited for the group. And honestly, I tried to slow
down. It's not my fault Rivs are extremely efficient machines.

And I would have taken photos, except I managed to destroy my camera with
the water from the bouquet of sunflowers (Seth's favorite) that I left at
the ghost bike. So I've collected others' into this album:

 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ejchang/sets/72157655728650855

Keep riding and writing. You never know who you might reach.

[RBW] Not all that glitters is gold...

2015-07-07 Thread Manuel Acosta
And so the beautiful summer of San Francisco is upon us...
Meaning foggy, cold and wet. PERect time to go on an overnight in the
headlands.

Good buddies Tony and Bridgette make their way up from the Peninsula to do
a quick easy overnight with thoughts of epic shred session afterwords. With
pedicab rival Aaron joining in for the adventure.

Burritos are a go. Gear is dialed. Everyone is fresh.

We roll through the quite streets of Fisherman's Wharf to be greeted by
Karl the Fog as we cross the bridge into our adventures.

First single track down... disaster strikes.
Tony with the strength of his umm legs. Bends his saddle rails and pops
his saddle bolt off. Luckily he finds it in the dark and takes the time to
screw the bolt on.

He hops back on and the bolt's last threads give and the tiny but ever
important bolt pings into oblivion darkness never to be found again.
Stuck now we sit around in the dark trying to figure out ways of making
this work. Good thing Tony brought some extra paracord.

A couple of knots later and the saddle is ridable. Kinda. With minor
adjusting every 2 miles. We crawl our way to camp.
Just to find it drenched. With the fog make it rain feel like rain light
conditions.

With Aaron in his tent, Tony and Bridgette wrapped in a burrito tarp. There
was talks about a knife fight for Aaron's tent that never come into
fruition.

We wake up wet but take the our time. Sleeping in until the sun came out.

And for one rare morning in San Francisco it actually did. We sat and
chilled waiting for our stuff to dry.

We figured with Tony's saddle and with Bridgette nursing a previous back
injury we would cancel the day long shred fest for another time. Aaron goes
on ahead while we cruise and take our time come back home.

It was the great quotes of Mike Williams that really changed my perspective
on how adventures SHOULD go. And I'm never too sad about missing any
opportunity to go riding hard.
While having epic adventures is great. Just spending some time with good
friends and being able to leave with some stories to tell are just as good.

Always remember good friends, The trails will always be there. For next
time.

Pictures proved that for this overnight Karl the Fog wins:

 Hi all,

I have a 650B wheelset up for sale. The front is a Deore LX hub laced to a

compatible, 135mm spacing) laced to a 36 spoke velocity Synergy OC rim. I
believe both rims were made by Rich Lesnik of Rivendell/Hands on Wheels,
but only the front has the HoW sticker, so I could be mistaken about the
rear. Both wheels spin true, and have very little wear on the brake track.
The front rim looks almost new, the rear in very good shape, with one minor
ding that I tried to show in the pictures. The wheelset will come with a
used set of 650Bx40 Schwalbe Marathons, which have lots of tread left.
 Pictures here: http://imgur.com/a/VKIWL

Asking $270 shipped to the US (international pays shipping).

[RBW] WTB: MB-1 Parts

2015-06-20 Thread Manuel Acosta
Yesterdays ride has cemented the fact that I really need to build up this
bike right.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/mannyacosta/shares/fo154W

Looking for the following items. Some I may need to help me survive the
next ride, others I need just so that the bike would look cool.

1 threaded headset (something good that wouldn't rattle free)

Triple Crankset (something that isn't a one piece weld of three chainrings
together)

two bolt Seat-post 27.2 with some sort of setback ( need to put the
Hi-Rite on something)

Bullmoose bars (Why not?)

Let me know if you have any of these things would greatly appreciate it.

Twine/paracord hammock if you want to live dangerously.

I had a eno that ripped on me.

I like Roo from Kammock. Really well made hammock and well thought out.

A huge double nest hammock with gear loops along the edge so that you can
jury-rig it as a ghetto shelter. The carabiner set-up is spot on and easy.
Kammocks Trap also doubles a water retention and has tent poles in it.

My old Kelty Zen 2 person tent has been fine, although it's klunky,
showing it's age, and I know replacing it is on the horizon. Until last
year, I assumed it would be with an updated tent, but I am very intrigued
now with the idea of a hammock. Specifically some of the claims regarding
comfort. I'm not a particularly good sleeper anyway, so camping is
generally a night of tossing and turning in my bag. I'm curious if this is
familiar to anyone here? If so, has a hammock made any difference?

My current set up is either a thermarest inflatable or Z foam pad, with a
down mummy style bag. Would my pads still work in a hammock for insulation,
or do you have to use some sort of hanging insulator?

So far the ENO seems to be a front runner just on popularity. But then
theres tarps, netting, straps, etc that appear to get added on often too.
Aside from some random netted hammocks, I have little experience with them,
and certainly no overnight use. I've considered trying to find one used and
try it bare bones just to see if I could even nap in it. Or maybe take it
along while camping with my wife and daughter?

[RBW] Re: Anyone in Folsom free Sunday?

2015-05-03 Thread Manuel Acosta
Matt.
Thanks for the heads up.

Not with the future wifey. Surprising her with a tandem for her birthday
gift. I'll be coming up solo. Looking like a monster loop around Lake
Folsom, Unless it's stupid hot. then I don't know.

 Manny,

Below are a few links. Assuming you'll be with your fiance I'll recommend
the ride around Lake Natoma instead of Folsom Lake. Very romantic. This is
probably what you have been hearing about anyway. Lake Natoma is below
Folsom Lake Dam and should make for a perfect paved ride, Very scenic and
relaxing. It's about a 20 mile round trip loop. Not knowing where you are
picking up the tandem, I suggest you find Bicycles Plus (link below). They
are located at the trail head and directly kitty-corner to free covered
public parking. Karen's bakery is right next door where you can get your
sweetie some sweets and there are plenty of restaurants of all ethnic
persuasion in close proximity. There is also a Mexican restaurant right
next door but you should inquire at Bicycle's Plus if looking for something
different. Another plus is they are located in Old Town Historic Folsom.
Bicycle's Plus has the appearance of an all carbon/spandex shop but I
guarantee you they will treat you right.

I've been commuting through this area for the past 25 years. I hope these
suggestions help. If you have any more questions just ask.

Even more important any food options that would make the 2 hour ride

[RBW] Re: Manny/many Rivs in PDX

2015-04-19 Thread Manuel Acosta
Good times were had.
First and most importantly we had the most gracious and outstanding AirBnb
host of The Knotty Grotto.
John and Darby, proud new owners to Rivelo PDX.
Bike AND Record store!!
No real opening yet. Super soft opening.
Pretty sure details will follow soonish.
Here's the website: www.rivelopdx.com

Anyways we came up to buy THE RINGS, Ash decided to buy her's from a
established and more reputable company.

I decided to buy my rings from a bike builder. Bob from Bantam Bicycle
Works forged three rings of true. In the fires of Mt.Tabor he labored over
the famed material of titaniumizm, the legendary metal of Portland. Why do
you ask did he forge three rings? Well. I lose things...
We were invited to join Andy and Company for a BBQ shingdig.
The future wifey and I were warmly greeted with Andy and Company. Many new
friends were made, interweb friends were met again. I was united with my
long lost brother Russ Roca, from PathlessPedaled.
Bob brought me my three rings. In which instantly Andy instigated that I
should throw them in the fire to see them change color.I totally decided
that my rings should represent the satiety of my marriage and should be
tarnish by being thrown in a fire, all by myself. That the story... yea...

Week prior there was a ride expected, I get a call from Andy saying pretty
much that this Manny ride got turned into an MAshley ride, much to the
gentle nudging of the other women in his life.

So fast forward to Saturday and this MAshley ride started 40 minutes late.
Typical but never a big deal, specially when you're having coffee. Super
mellow ride down for Blue Star Donuts then to the new store. We get there
to John and Darby toast to the new shop and to our engagement which was
super sweet and amazing on their part. We finish the ride with Food Trucks
and boba. Always a great time seeing friends in PDX. You're welcome for
bring the sun.

Also I broke my lens to my camera...

Pictures Proved that a Prime 70 mm lens only shoots Portrait shots well:

[RBW] Re: Easter Weekend Riding

2015-04-06 Thread Manuel Acosta
Solid.

On Monday, April 6, 2015 at 10:41:42 AM UTC-7, Cyclofiend Jim wrote:

Got invited along on a Saturday loop with some folks. The ride was
pitched as easy and no-drop/regroup/no-one-left-behind.As soon as I
walked through the door of the shop, I kinda had the feeling that I was in
trouble. Been around enough fast folk to recognize the lean and hungry
look in many riders' eyes. But, the espresso was free and people were very
welcoming. Met new friends, chatted, handled the good-natured ribbing
about the size of my underseat bag (Old RBW Banana Bag). (No, It's not a
knapsack...) One of two steel frames among the sea of crabon. Seemingly
every two wheelsets containing the number of spokes found in just one of
mine. Still confidence was steady (if not high).

We set out, climbing. Climbed more. I started paying for the decided
lack of verticality in most of my recent rides and slipped back. Luckily
I've ridden enough to know when I can't hang and find a cadence and effort
 that wouldn't blow me up.

It was a gorgeously clear day, and I was riding on epic roads which had
too long been ignored. And I did feel a bit better as things went along.
Though, two things were evident: (1) I was not catching back up to anyone,
 and (2) it warn't a no-drop ride.

To be clear, if they _had_ waited, I would have told them at the first
regroup that they should no longer worry about me - I knew the route, was
entirely self-sufficient and didn't want to make them change what was for
 them a very compatible pace.

So, I suffered and moseyed. Worked my way up and over the inclines. Felt
a bit better here and worse there. Watched fitter riders work past me and
took steady bites out of the hill before me. Leapfrogged some groups who
seemed to be in assault/recover mode. Eventually went past the Bootjack
parking lot, essed my way through the last stand of trees and popped out at
PanToll. Saw many knots of riders recharging before the descent. I was
tired but not trashed, so was able to sit up, zip up the vest and let the
Hilsen do what it loved - descend easily and surely towards Stinson Beach.
Within the first 1/2 mile heard a loud, whirring clatter and checked back
to find a faster rider catching me. He was all tendons and
crazy-eye-concentrated, so I tucked right and let him move past. Since I
hadn't been practicing climbing of late, I knew that meant I hadn't been
descending at speed. Reflexes, balance and focus hadn't been tuned in a
while, so while I didn't creep downhill, neither did I see how close to the
 edge I could push things.

Still, having a rabbit out front is always good practice. Seeing the line
of a faster rider always helps to relax me, which in turn puts me more
where I want to be when dropping from altitude. Calm and smooth. Always
well within the equation of grip and footprint provided by the JB's.
While my pilot fish continued to move away, we both overtook a number of
other more tentative descenders. When Panoramic Highway finally opens up
from the forest on the last bit down to Stinson, there are a series of long
straights and tight 180 degree turns over blacktop. The surface seemed
good to me, but clearly impacted those who chose smaller tires and higher
pressures. Hailed, chatted at and slipped by quite a few riders on as we
dropped. Over each broken bit of roadway and through each turn, the Hilsen
whispered that it could've handled more. I kept it reined in and suddenly
 found myself at sea level.

Pulled the cheese bagel out of my pocket and randonneur-snacked as I
headed north to the next chunk o' the day. One of my favorite unknown
routes - the BoFax road. Of course, I found some Good Friday beer bottle
glass about a mile before the turnoff and nursed a slowly softening tire to
the obscure turn. Got there, dropped the wheel, picked the tiniest glass
chip out of the tread and swapped in the first tube, which failed at the
stem base, then the second tube which held fast (which prevented me from
unboxing the patch kit.) Repacked (considering about how, once upon a time
and for quite a while, I used to own the tiniest seatbag which Jandd made.
The one which held a 23mm tube, a folded $20 blll and my car key with a
tiny split ring on it. What the heck had I been thinking back then?)

Went through many of the stages of grief for the climb back up to Bolinas
Ridge, then the next set of seven steps (called the Sisters or Seven
Sisters - you'd recognize them from any number of picturesque automobile
ads) which brings you up to Rock Springs staging area on Mt Tamalpais. But,
even when I felt my worst (probably when I was Bargaining) it was still a
ridiculous gift to be out and riding in such a location on a glorious day.

Crested out and tilted down again, refilled water and shifted fluids and
Pantoll parking lot, then scooted ever

[RBW] Can I call dibs?

2015-03-10 Thread Manuel Acosta
Theres a 52cm Betty Foy up on the site. Fiancee sent me the link. I get home
and after making amazing dinner in which I thank her she quickly replies, You
know what would be really nice if for all my hardwork on the day of the wedding
theres a Betty Foy with a bow that says for my lovely wife. Just saying...

... This is the lady Im marrying...

Anyways pretty sure a 52cm is a tad big.
She likes footage on the ground with saddle seat dropped like a pro.Thinking
the new Clementine is a better fit.

Convince me otherwise and I'll call dibs.
