[RBW] Re: FS: Droptube Rivendell Custom 54cm

2024-05-09 Thread Mark R.

Motorcycles are addicting. I’ve been riding street since 1989 to get around
town, it was safer to commute at night than
my bicycle. My opinion is to buy a used smaller bike, see how it feels,
before you sink money into it

I got rid of one bike because it was too slow and loud. The next because it
was too tall and I had trouble reaching the
ground at lights. Then I found the Perfect fit for me and put 40k miles on
that Moto.
As it stands , I hardly ever use my car (about 2k miles since 2019) . I put
22k one bike and 2k on another till last year.
This year I’m on track to 10k, this bike is new and fresh with all the
latest safety features.

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-09-28 Thread Mark R.
I am definitely a proto Riv guy. I was riding lugged steel race bikes, and
the fit was long top tube, lots of seat post, bars low. I was at a swap
meet and a guy gave me a Riv catalog. Catalog #2. Maybe one. I liked
what I read. I read the article in Outside on Grant and his philosophy
when he launched Riv, so I knew about the company.

Local shop had a Marinoni frameset, a little bigger than what I usually
rode, could take 28 to 30 tires, and had eyelets. Hmmm, nice frame with
some good features. I sold that to buy my first Riv, a Heron road, in 99,
to see what the difference would be. I was smitten, and put about 50k and
lots of centuries on that bike. In 2000, I ordered a Riv road, built by
Joe Starck.

Both bikes went to new homes, but my era is definitely born out of that
time of B and W catalogs and Riv Readers in my mailbox.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell Road, 52cm, $1850

2017-07-27 Thread Mark R.
Time to go to a new home: I like to look at it, since 2014 I think I rode
it twice. From 2008 to 2013, it was not even built up, just art in my
computer room.

Of course you want pics, here
https://www.flickr.com/photos/57391630@N02/albums/72157684122009814

Ordered in 2001, built, by Joe Starck and painted by Joe Bell. Sovereign
Blue. Grant designed this for me as a road bike, to take tires 700 by 27
to 35 with short reach brakes. I usually have 28s on it, once rode it with
32's. 32's are the max I would ride it with. Never ridden in rain, never
fendered. Babied, loved, and tucked in at night :0).

Never crashed, one or two minor chips touched up, biggest visual is that
there are rub marks from bar con/ergo cables when I had it set up that
way. They can probably be rubbed out of the clearcoat.

-Reynolds 753 main tubes, 531 forks, 725 rear triangle
-130 rear spacing
-tt 54 equivalent, seat tube 52, 72.5 parallel angles, bb drop 80,
Chainstay 43, top tube slope 1.5 degrees
-framesavered when new, and each time between rebuilds (I have had
different parts on it from time to time)

Most, if not all, of the parts were new when I put them on, mostly Dura Ace
and Shimano stuff.

- Dura Ace 7800 derailleurs
-7700 downtube shifters, which are new. I can also substitute a set of
used old nine speed bar cons
-7402 brakes and levers
-Shimano R700 crank with Dura Ace 7900 bottom bracket
- 3 ttt bars/stem
- wheels are ultegra rear hub laced to Specialized Saturae rim, front is
Specialized hub to same, 36 holes (not the wheels in the pic).
-King headset
-Nitto Crystal fellow seat post.

Full bike (minus saddle, pedals, bottle cages) $1850 shipped in CONUS (bike
flights)

Ping me off list if interested.

2016-11-30 Thread Mark R.
just wanted to comment: the workmanship on Giordana's is superb. My LeMond
was also built by the Billato Bros, and let me tell you, the mitering,
brazing, filing, alignment, was as good as it gets.

Great frame, simple lugs, cast fittings, too bad about that 8 foot ditch in
the road that claimed it's life. The fork pretty much stayed straight, the
down tube bent as it was supposed to, the bottom edge of the downtube lug
was rounded, not pointed, so no can opener effect.

Nice!

[RBW] Re: Custom colors on a Roadeo

2016-11-10 Thread Mark R.

FWIW, the color page does no justice to the colors in real life. I am
fortunate to be friends with JB, so when he painted my Riv, I just asked
him what he thought would look good on a Riv my size (52). I thought that
some colors would look better on one size vs another.

He picked Sovereign Blue, and it's very nice. I also let him pick the
color when he painted my (now sold) Bruce Gordon. I figured his eyes are
better than mine. He also told me ALL bikes look great after being built
up, regardless of the color.

Good point!

[RBW] Stolen: My daughters 650b Sequoia

2016-10-12 Thread Mark R.
I hope this is ok here, I know some listers are in the San Diego area,
wanted to put some more eyes out on the street.

Got a text from my kid, her bike was stolen. She is pretty upset, not so
much because it was her bike, but that I built it for her. She did love to
ride the wheels off it: she used it daily to commute, shop, fun rides.

It was stolen in North Park, San Diego.

Details: 47 cm, powdercoated black, 650 b conversion, Mavic front hub,
Shimano 600 rear, Weinman ZAC rims, front laced radially. Gripshifts to
Shimano derailers, xt front, Deore rear, ultegra headset, Nitto bars, SR
Stem. Nifty Swifties, new, Dia compe Centerpul brakes.

Maybe it will show up on CL, or at the swap meet in a few weeks. Let me
know if you see it.

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Re: Helmets... what do you like?

2016-09-17 Thread Mark R.
I lurk and seldom post here, but there is some interesting content and I would
like to weigh in. I use Bell helmets, for some reason they fit my head best.

In 2002 I was in a bike lane @ about 18 to 20 mph, and there was a six foot
wide by six foot deep ditch the width of the lane. The crew fixing the pipes
underground failed to put a steel plate over it. The woman in front of me
(about 50 yards) crashed, broke her ribs, arm, collarbone, punctured her lung
and it collapsed. Her head was fine. Due to her helmet.

My front wheel went into goes into the ditch. It was an abyss and my bike
disappears. I have over 40 years experience in the martial arts, with lots of
training in taking falls. I rolled, instinctively , broke fall , stood, the
pain that ripped through my body was so intense I fell to the ground. Another
rider pulled me to the side of the bike lane and got my bike. He thought my
roll was cool (LOL), my fork was bent, downtube bent, wheel was true. Riv
content: I was on my Lemond that day, Riv was spared.
My helmet looked ok, the plastic was lightly cracked. The foam inside had deep
cracks. And it was a glancing blow from my roll.

Moral of the story: even with all my training for falls, more than most humans
on Earth, I am glad I was wearing my helmet.
I rode the bent bike home (steel rules).

Putting out feelers, maybe someone is looking for a Riv like this and
maybe I just am ready to let her go!

2001, Joe Starck built, Joe Bell painted, all Reynolds (mostly 753, but
some 725 and 531 for good measure). Framesavered when new, and a few other
times too, I am fastidious about my bikes. Always stored indoors, and even
though it was the cream of the crop of my bikes, it always shared my butt
with several other bikes (that does not sound right LOL)
It sat in a room from 2005 to 2010, I had another Riv for that time.

52 c to top, 54 c to c top tube, Sovereign blue, short reach brakes,
single eyelets, vertical dropouts, Chris King headset, matching Silca pump.

No dents, dings, never ridden in rain, no rust, never wore fenders. One
small chip on build up that I covered immediately, and two rub marks from
cables on headtube before I discovered rubber covers for bar con cables.
 Duh.

Takes a 32 c tire if you want, I ride it mostly with 28s. I am the
original owner and have full build sheet.
 72.5 parallel angles, chainstay 43.

My PBH is 77, saddle height 67.8.

Frame/fork/headset/pump $1500, full Dura Ace mix bike $3000, we can talk
about shipping or intermediate builds between bare frame and full bike.

some 725 and 531 for good measure).

52 c to top, 54 c to c top tube, Sovereign blue, short reach brakes, single
eyelets, vertical dropouts, Chris King headset, matching Silca pump.

(that is not the current build)

[RBW] Re: Groupsets. Shimano, Campy, etc.

2014-11-28 Thread Mark R.
I have had better service out of more expensive components. All my Dura
Ace stuff has been flawless, but it has been 7700 DT shifters or bar cons.
Brakes, bearings, etc, perfecto!

All my high end Campy stuff has been fantastic, lasts forever, blah blah
blah blah.

That said, when I built up my new LIghthouse this year, I wanted silver
components and opted for Athena 11 ergo levers (shifting a nine speed Dura
Ace drive train). Worked great, shifters lasted 1500 miles! I guess this
was a known issue with the powershift levers, replaced them with carbon
Chorus levers, they are getting better the more I ride them (about 2500
miles or so). I find them breaking in, not breaking down, and the only
thing I don't like is the color. But I am over that.

Campy did warranty the broken Athena lever, so I will keep them as spares.
I have run 10's of thousands of miles on Chorus nine and Record nine
levers, they just kept shifting! Once every few years I would replace a
spring (5 bucks) in the shifter and it was good for another 10 k or more
miles. This was on the early rounded hood levers, not the later ones, nor
the early pointy hood ones.

I never had much luck with Phil stuff, so I don't put my money there.

listed not off this bike.
Specialized pedals 60, with small toe clips and laminated straps
Suntour superbe pro rear 55, long cage, a tiny bit of wear on inside
of cage, also some of anodizing is mottled, will take better pics
later, i started to use polish on it and the finish cleaned up a bit
Suntour superbe non aero brake levers 45, levers as new, hoods intact
but beginning to have issues due to age, certainly usable for years
still
Suntour new winner 14/30 ultra six 30
Shimano 600 six speed 13/30. 30 off another bike
Vetta saddle 23, like a B17, vinyl cover, with bag loops!
Laprade seat post 15, 26.6, has some insertion marks, since original
user put post all the way down in frame when stored

Also, Dura Ace hubs, mod 7700, 32 hole, laced with Dt spokes to mavic
open 4 CD rims, dark anodized, 650c, with Michelin pro tires, great
for a triatholon bike, built by Peter White years ago, recently trued
by pro shop, little wear, these were a spare set of go fast wheels,
tires have two or three rides in them, the skewers are not dura ace,
210 plus shipping

[RBW] Re: Riv-riding motorcyclists?

2011-11-08 Thread Mark R.
I have been riding motorcycles since 1990. For a while, about seven
years, i did not have a car, just my bicycles and my moto. I needed a
small truck and got out of them in 97, then got back into motos in 04.

We had taken a road trip from Cali to Wqshington state, and while
there, I brought my bicycle and did a century in Redmund. Tired the
next day, we rented scooters on San Juan island, and had a blast. With
my daughter on the back. she told me that if I got a scooter, i could
take her to school everyday. done

It was a 150cc Vespa, and it was too slow for the hills around here,
so i sold it and bought a Honda Hawk Gt650. I was putting 10k a year
on my bicycle, about 6k a year on the moto, commuting. Then i got a
ninja 650, fuel injected, and at 10k miles, had an accident in which a
lady pulled out in front of me, and stopped. I had the skills to skid
and slide around the back of her, then she panicked and i was afraid
she was going to through in in reverse, had a tank slapper reversing
directions, went down.

I wear full gear. I rolled, my full face helmet was destroyed. Had i
not been wearing it, I would not be here, or i would not have a face.
I shattered my right arm into hundred of pieces. It was doubtful i
would regain use of it. I have a plate and 13 screws, and worked
really hard to get it back, and it is fine. My doc said most folks
don't come back from my injury like I did.

That said, i still ride. I restored another 650 Hawk (cult bike,
google it, or i can send you a link to my restoration). Then I found
one that was a collectors, almost no miles, and bought that one, sold
the other on CL. I ride it maybe once or twice a week. I love it, but
i could give it up. Mostly keep it around now as backup
transportation in case something happens to my car, since i now live
alone.

Just yesterday, i was thinking if I had to choose, it would be the
bicycle. I love things with two wheels. To the original question, i
prolly put 7k miles on my bicycle a year, and 3k miles on the moto.

Do love watching motogp, and one of my favorite racers was killed two
weeks ago at Sepang race. It gives me pause for riding.

[RBW] Re: Some of my Riv pics

2011-05-13 Thread Mark R.
Thanks, i have s much bandwidth on my web hosting, i have all
kinds of pages with pics.

On a good note, i have had a click on my green riv forever, and I done
everything to isolate it. Does not happen when standing and climbing,
nor coasting, but when hammering on straights.

This is what I did
Changed wheels, thought it was a front wheel. Not.
Lubed ferrules on several different wheels, as well as spoke
intersections. Not.
Tightned magnet pickup and magnet for speedo. Not, although it did
seem to help.
Lubed chain with different lubes. Not.
Changed chain. Not.
Changed cassette. Not.
Greased seat post and stem, seemed to help, but sound seemed to come
back, so not.
Changed saddles. Not.
Changed pump, seemed to go away, came back. So, not.
Tightened all bolts, found a loose brake lever. Not.
Took off crank, tightened bb cups, external. Not.
Greased chainring bolts. Not.
Took off brakes, cleaned up, out them back on, not.

Whew.

The front derailer is a braze on type, attached to a separate clamp.
I had tightened the derailler but never checked the clamp. Yes!
It was a little loose, so that explains the noise when pedaling hard
on straights, the clamp was moving a bit. I guess when I stood and
climbed it torqued the seat tube, and mitigated the issue.

[RBW] Re: fatter tires for smaller diameter wheels

2011-05-12 Thread Mark R.

There is also the factor of what you get used to. Someone who rides
700c all the time, gets on a 26 inch wheel road bike, geometry
adjusted or not, and declares it not stable, or whatever. Especially
of someone has been on big wheels for all their adult riding career,
as most of us have.

I bought my 26 inch wheel Riv from a gal who had all 700c wheel bikes.
She did not like the handling, and the top tube was too long for her.
Ok, fit me perfect, with the bars below the saddle. I rode,
exclusively, my 700c Riv up until I got that 26 incher. I did not
like the new bike at first. After a month, i was sold. The geometry
was optimized by Grant for this size wheel, and it does ride different
than a bike with larger wheels.

Since 06, i think have ridden 700c maybe three or four times.

Hopefully Jan will chime in on this if I've mis-understood the test.
The BQ article was well thought out and executed, and a good read.  My
understanding of the test was that the bicycle geometry was a
constant, and the object was to explore how various combinations of
wheel size and tire width impacted handling.  The conclusion was that,
regardless of wheel size, there was a range of moments of inertia
within which there 26, 650B, and 700c wheel / tire combinations with
similar handling.  Wheel / tire combinations below this range were
overly sensitive, and ones above were sluggish (my terms, not BQs).

IMHO handling is subjective so what one rider prefers may not be
optimal for another.  Just for fun, I ran the numbers on my Atlantis'
touring wheels / tires and of course it's way out on the sluggish side
of the scale (what a surprise!) but performs well for my loaded
touring.  The 3 testers are more performance oriented riders and
  prefer more responsive handling.

We had a thread here a while back about optimal width for 26 wheels
where many responders liked 1.75 (+/-) widths for touring general
riding.  Before that, I had put some 1.25 Panaracer Urban Max tires
on my old 26 MTB grocery getter, with not a thought to handling.  I
found it skittish went up to 1.75 it significanlty increased the
stability.  The old MTB was probably designed for 2 knobbies, so the
1.25 street tires were definitely sub-optimal.

   List,

I just read a post from Patrick Moore with thread title to make 26
rim'd atlantis fast randonneur: suggestions?, the quote is, Jan's
idea that smaller wheels ought to have fatter tires for the best
handling compared to larger wheels has not been true in my
experience.  I have read similar statements from others and wanted to
   comment.

I did actually purchase the Bicycle Quarterly (BQ) article, although I
don't have it on hand as I write.  As I recall, the handling of 3
bikes with similar geometry but different wheelsize was compared.  The
BQ conclusion was that the bikes handled differently depending on tire
width, and the purported explanation was that the moment of inertia of
the wheel was the cause of a difference in handling.  Since wider
tires are generally heavier, and smaller diameter wheels light, one
may infer the recommendation that smaller diameter wheels should have
wider tires than larger diameter wheels.

Here's what I want to challenge: the geometry of the 3 bikes was
similar, I believe they all used a 73 degree head angle.  So yes, if
you want to keep the head angle constant as wheel size changes (and it
is a head angle commonly used for road bikes with 700C wheels), then
probably a mountain bike diameter 26 wheel and a skinny tire is not
   the best combination.

However, bike designers (at least the better ones) know to change
(decrease) the head angle and other aspects of the frame geometry for
a smaller diameter / similar tire width wheel precisely because the
steering of the smaller diameter and lower moment of inertia wheel is
quicker and the stability is less.  So, I don't think the BQ article
proved a 26 wheel bike has poor handling with narrow tires, it just
showed that if the geometry is taken say from a design that works well
for narrow 700C wheels and no compensating changes are made, the
   handling will be sub-optimal.

Tim mentions training for speed too. As in, developing a higher rpm spin
instead of casually mashing the pedals as you take in the countryside.

  From: Tim McNamara tim...@bitstream.net

  2.  Buy tires that roll fast.  I like the Panaracer Pasela 26 x 1.25 the
best.  Thick rubber and lots of tread slows you down.

[RBW] Some of my Riv pics

2011-05-10 Thread Mark R.
New to this group, but on around and about on ibob and others, here
are some pics folks here might enjoy.

Since I took the pics of the blue Riv, the rear wheel (no eyelets)
cracked at several spoke holes, so I found another set of wheels for
it ( blue mavic reflexes on Dura Ace 7700 hubs).

Green Riv had that Brooks saddle go south, it now sports a Turbo.
Also went back to Dura Ace down tubers, love em!

[RBW] Re: Speaking of that new RR 43 ....

2011-05-09 Thread Mark R.

On May 8, 3:08 pm, Steve Palincsar palin...@his.com

I know lots of people, myself included, who have had medical bills
resulting from cycling.  I even had a friend die in a cycling accident.
I've been riding with bicycle clubs virtually every weekend, and
commuting, since 1972 and I know lots of cyclists.  But I have never met
one single cyclist who had medical bills that could be attributed to
riding carbon.  In fact, I've never met a single cyclist who had as much
as a scratch that could be attributed to riding carbon.

Well, i met two. One had a carbon fiber frame break at either the down
tube or fork, i think it was the fork. He landed on his face at
speed. Took him a few years to get back on the bike, numerous
surgeries later to reconstruct his face. I told him he was lucky he
did not break his neck.

The other fellow also landed on his face, riding a spinergy Rev X
carbon fiber wheel. The front wheel collapsed, all of a sudden he
found his fork tips in the pavement.

My friend got in crash a few weeks ago, but someone ran into him in a
race. The bikes, as he said, exploded, into lots of small carbon
tubes. But he was hurt as a result of hitting the ground, the frame
broke after.
