Yes, a VO Polyvalent! Just the VO porteur front rack on it too.

Anne and Rob:

Portable Settlers is simply the Travel Edition which you can get from
Amazon or if there's a local toy/board game store in your area.

Re: saddlesack. It's actually the Small!

Fully loaded, my rig was light:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/judah42/5701330998/in/photostream

The reason was that out of the three of us, Corey had the tent and
cooking stuff in panniers and a front rack as well as tarps and so on.
Thus, my personal load was light.

That said — I lean towards packing smart with minimalism in mind. I
based my kit off of Grant's Kit for One Night Out article. I didn't
have a tent, sleeping pad or cooking gear with me but I can't imagine,
having seen what those items were like in size, having to go bigger
than a Medium or Large Saddlesack. If you attach the pad, tent or
sleeping bag to the top of the bag behind you, as I did, or on a small
front rack, I still imagine that a Medium or Large Saddlesack is just
fine.

My gear inside the small saddlesack was plenty for an overnighter. I
had on some Outlier pants, an Icebreaker mid-weight LS top with a
Rapha jersey on top of that for the ride. In the bag, a gilet, a
Patagonia LS wool baselayer, a Patagonia down sweater (which is really
a down jacket that compresses to the size of a grapefruit but is oh so
toasty), Smartwool hiking socks for camp/sleeping, toothbrush/
toothpaste, mess kit, bandana, full toolkit (made up of small smart
bits) and spare bungies and ziploc baggies.

I could have used some room to tote food perhaps and I think a folded
mussette bag would work well near the end of a ride to pick up food to
carry on my back or small runs.

I think obviously you can go both ways — I've read and learnt from the
kit that Anne's posted in the archives and from others so you can
carry more for sure. It depends if you go solo or with a group. With a
group, you can distribute the load a bit more.

Looks like this weekend we're going to China Camp and I think I'll be
trying some new things... will report back.

Cheers!
Naz.

[RBW] First S24O to Sam P. Taylor with photos.

2011-05-16 Thread Naz Hamid
Hi,

Thought I'd make a proper post as I'm a long-time lurker and reply-er
but never first time poster.

A few friends and I have all recently reached that point in our
cycling lives where we've sold or barely ride our track bikes, where
the road bikes see less and less use and our racings days are long
gone and the interest is in purely remembering how much fun the first
time we rode bicycles was like. We've all collectively encouraged each
other to build up Riv-ish bikes (though, aside from my wife, none of
us have a Riv — a Bob Jackson, an old Gitane and a Velo Orange) and
being in the Bay Area finally decided we'd take these lovely bikes and
go bike camping for the first time.

I won't bore you with a soliloquy on how much of a wonderful weekend
it was, with moments of pure child-like joy and wonderment (at least
in my mind) and the feeling of the freedom that comes with riding a
bike.

Thus, photos:

Cheers!
Naz.

[RBW] Re: SF Weekend?

2010-12-07 Thread Naz Hamid
Hey Lesli,

SF has no shortage of great food of course. Not sure how many of these
you've already checked out but...

My picks:

Citizen's Band http://citizensbandsf.com
Pinkie's Bakery (part of Citizen's Band)
Basil Canteen http://basilcanteen.com

Those three are in SOMA, pretty close to The Commons actually.

Naked Lunch http://www.nakedlunchsf.com/
Miller's East Coast Deli http://www.millersdelisf.com/
Brenda's French Soul Food http://www.frenchsoulfood.com/
Schmidt's http://schmidts-sf.com/

Off the top of my head, those are must-go's.

As for shopping, it's all the usual suspects that you'd be into,
Unionmade, Self Edge, AB Fits, etc. But if you haven't these are new
or also good visits:

Revolver http://www.revolversf.com/
Seed Store http://www.seedstoresf.com/
General Store http://www.visitgeneralstore.com/

Cheers,
Naz.

  2)

My wife recently got a Sam Hillborne which she loves and we built it

Unfortunately, the saddle didn't agree with her and she went back to
