RE: [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback
Two points: 1. Definitely use Orange Seal. I've had much better results for initial setup with it than Stans; also, doesn't create boogers in your tires after time (unlike Stans). 2. HED Belgium C2+ is another wide, rim braking rim that works well. More expensive than the Pacentis, but I've had great results with, both tubed and tubeless. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Bike Industry Controlled by Grant Petersen
Sorry to Grant for misspelling his last name (if I were better at this google groups stuff I'd change the title at the top)! And thanks for giving us the opportunity to buy more versatile bikes. As to Mike's point about the midwest gravel races being racy, well, yes and no. I did Dirty Kanza on my A. Homer Hilsen two years ago...and finished in 20 hours. I was racing myself, completing a personal challenge. I think anyone who's out there in Emporia or the various other midwestern (or western) spots and isn't expecting to be in the top 50...they're doing the same sort of thing. I recently sold my mountain-ish bike because I found I didn't like hitting single track (including driving to the trailhead). But I love riding the backroads and gravel tracks (and even some mountain biking trails, oddly) that I can reach right from my door. [RBW] SONdelux or Shutter Precision SV-8 Dynamo Hub?
Well, you're kind of talking about two different things: 1. I think the Shutter Precision (SP) vs the SON is a tough choice. I ultimately chose the SP and couldn't be happier. I've got thousands of miles on my first one, and it's still going strong. It's lighter, less drag, and more efficient than the SON. Maybe less durable - I'll let you know if I wear it out. OTOH, the SON has a longer warranty, more of a known quantity, and easier to get serviced (I believe). More retailers carry them, so it's easier to find a replacement/warranty if necessary. 2. When you talk about flickering and the light staying on, that's a light design issue. Some lights (e.g. BM Cyo Premium) flicker at low speed but have a smaller standlight built in that stays steady at a light. Others (e.g. BM Fly(?)) flicker at low speed and also don't have a standlight. They flicker because they don't have capacitors or a battery to take up the load when your wheel turns slowly and doesn't produce much power (true for all dynamos). Some (Exposure Revo) have a battery built in that smooths that out and keeps the steady (if slightly dinner) at slow speed. Others (k-lite) have some super capacitors that provide less power than a battery, but also prevent slow-speed flicker. So, SP and SON - hard to go wrong. Light to pair with it - you've got to figure out what your priorities and riding needs are. My favorite dynamo light (right now) is the Revo, but I do a lot of country biking - I want those 800 lumens on dirt roads. My favorite city light is the BM Cyo Premium (or the eDelux II - optics are identical) because you won't blind drivers or people on paths. A friend described my Hilsen setup as the full Grant, and that's basically true in the cockpit: Nitto Technomic Deluxe stem, Nitto Mustache handlebars, a two-bolt Nitto seatpost, and a Rivet Cycles Pearl saddle (which is awesome, by the way). Tektro/Silver brakes. Wheels are 32h Chris King hubs laced to DT-Swiss double eyelet 1.1 rims. Fantastic wheelset, built for me by Dave Chase at Redstone Cyclery in Lyons, CO. Drivetrain is a little different. 46 tooth single front ring, 11-32 9spd cassette, with a short cage SRAM X9 Type 2 rear derailleur shifted by a Silver friction shifter. I took a chance on the derailleur-shifter combo, since Riv says the Silver shifters don't work with the SRAM mountain derailleurs. And this works awesome! Absolutely no shifting problems, and I love love love that I never have chain slap - the roller clutch in the derailleur controls things even on the gnarliest of gravel roads/railroad crossings/uneven pavement. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS Green Quickbeam 60cm
After a bit of soul-searching (and moving to a smaller apartment), I've decided that it's time for my 60cm Quickbeam to find a new home where it will get ridden more. It's one of the original green ones, purchased in August 2004. It has...almost no original parts. :-) -Chris King headset (silver, obviously) -Phil Wood flip-flop fixed/free rear wheel, hand built, Mavic Open Pro rim, 32h -Original Suzue(?) front hub, hand built into a wheel with a Mavic CXP-33 rim, 32h -Nitto Dirt Drop stem -Nitto Mustache handlebars -Panaracer T-Serv Messenger tires, 700x35 (incidentally, I can't recommend these tires enough, in any size, for any bike that isn't a dedicated mountain bike or gravel racer) -Original Sugino 110x74 triple crank -Brass-looking bell The bike is currently set up as a fixed gear, so it only has a front brake/brake lever (Shimano BR-550, and Tiagra lever). Gearing is 48x18 (Surly stainless chainring, EAI cog, Phil Wood locking), which may not be your cup of tea. I have some smaller chainrings (a new 34 and a moderately used 42), as well as an outer pant guard ring (smooth, no teeth, not sure what to call it) that will cover up to a 48 (as I recall). So I'd throw those in for you, if you want them. I'm not including a seat post or seat, because, well, I need to be able to ride my other bike. :-) The pedals and the Pitlock skewer you see in the pictures are also not included. The Pitlock will be replaced with a nice XT quick release. There's a set of Planet Bike fenders that I'm happy to include as well. Normal wear and tear for a well-loved bike of its age. The one important paint issue is the drive-side dropout that got scored by my chain several years ago. I sent Grant a picture, and he told me it was nothing to worry about from a frame integrity standpoint, and it's not easy to see at all unless you get down to stare at the dropout, but I wanted to let you know about it. I'm 5'8, 30 inseam, not particularly long in the arms. The bike as set up now is upright-ish, but not cruiser-bars-sit-up-straight. Pictures here: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDg9tJF (sorry they're not artfully posed - we just had snow here, and it's bloody cold outside). I'd like to sell for $750 (which doesn't include packing and shipping by REI, if that should be required). Let me know any questions, and thanks for looking/reading! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Any new Riv roadish bike on the horizon?
I have, and love, an A. Homer Hilsen. I bought it when I was 27, and four years later it's still the best ride I've ever had. I've commuted on it, ridden it 200 miles in a day on gravel roads, climbed over Lee Hill Road in Boulder (just like the USA Pro Cycling Challenge!...Uh, only slower), and done all the general road riding that I can. It's a great bike - don't hesitate to buy it when you have the chance. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Done talking myself into like the moustache.
I mightily resisted the Moustaches for many years. I ran Noodles and Randonneurs, a set of bull horns on my single speed. Nothing felt right. I tried the Moustaches on a whim, and now they're the only ones I use. I commute on them, do centuries, group pacelines, everything you can think of. If/when I get a fatbike, a set from On One will probably end up on it. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Ft Collins, CO Area Rides/Routes?
While I'm not specifically familiar with the FoCo area, the roads in CO are great to ride on. You might climb up the hills to the west of the city, or you could head south and then east, climbing to Carter Lake. Pawnee Grasslands, to the north, might also be a possibility for some mixed surface riding (gravel and pavement). On Mar 19, 9:58 pm, Smitty 54ca...@gmail.com wrote: It sounds like me and mine are making last minute plans to visit family in the Ft Collins area (specifically Windsor) in the immediate future. I may be able to sneak my bike along. If I can get my bike there I'd like to get out and do some exploring. Anyone on here familiar with the area and want to offer up a tidbit or two about routes, destinations, etc? I'll be on 40mm tires and would prefer mixed terrain... the more dirt roads the better. Non-technical single track is fine too. I've been up to Horsetooth Reservoir (via car) and googled it recently and it looks like there might be some promising riding around there. Is that correct? I also wouldn't mind exploring the flats a bit but perhaps something other than the grid of farming roads would be more interesting. Wetlands? I'll have access to a car but would probably prefer stuff that I can ride to from the doorstep. [RBW] Re: East Coast Rivendells / BOBs
Alas, I can't join you all for Riv Rally East this year, but I just wanted to pipe up as another Brooklyn-based Riv owner. I've got an original green Quickbeam that I use to get around the city nearly every day, and an A. Homer Hilsen that I ride on the weekends with the New York Cycle Club and when I want to go a bit faster. I stick out a bit on those club rides, what with the lugs and the mustache bars, but everyone likes to draft behind me. *grin* Good to meet everyone! I also have a BikeFriday tandem with trailer, that gets lots of use ferrying kids to school and hauling groceries. I ride sometimes with a local group of business-man carbono hammer heads. It is gratifying to get the occasional double-take at the lugs and down-tube shifters. (Or even, my wood rims and tubulars) At a rest stop after I'd managed to hang with the front, a guy who'd been dropped told me I was messing with his rationalizations (for needing a multi-grand carbon bike)... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Quickbeam ?
I've also found the handling of the QB to be quite pleasant - it's a bike I can ride without hands around curves almost without thought... --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
