Took a new years day ride on my Hillborne. Went up to Conowingo dam and
back along the Susquehanna river.
This sign was new so I thought I would get a photo. Watch out for vultures.

Bought a Tanaka head from Soma a while back. Liked it so much I bought another.
I used the brass Silca heads for years

The ‘Hiro’ chuck I have is a steel Presta chuck that screws onto a

Your Tanaka chuck looks like the same thing but looks like it can be installed
directly into a pump hose using a clamp?
I got tired of screwing a Presta adapter on every time I wanted to fill a
bicycle tire, so I got a small electric pump and installed this once. In the
rare case I want to pump up a Schrader, I can unscrew it.

You would probably need wider fenders for 33.3 and I'm not comfortable

[RBW] Lights on a Platy

2022-05-18 Thread Richard Borneman
I going to put a dynohub wheel on my Platy and wire it up for lights. I'm
thinking about drilling a small hole in the lug cutout under the downtube,
running the wire inside and up the seat tube, drill another small hole in
rear of seat post for wire to exit.
Anybody done that before? I don't think it will weaken anything enough to
matter.
Don't really want to look at a wire running down, up and around on the
outside.
I read the recent article in BQ and like the hidden wire look.

I have been using a Dell desktop running windows 10 an edge browser, also
have a Macbook Pro running Monterey. Doesn't seem to matter what I use, if
I put a photo in the post, I get the message too long error.
I can't find anything in my Google groups settings that will change things.
Some posts have multiple photos in them.
Is there something in membership settings that would cause this problem?

I bought the Platy in NJ yesterday. Went up to take a look yesterday.
Offered him 3K cash and he bit.
Bike is like new, been ridden maybe 100 miles or so. It was my birthday, so
I treated myself.
Came home, ate lunch, set seat post height and went for a ride. Ride report
to follow.

2022-04-23 Thread Richard Borneman
California Platy Has been sold. NJ bike is in a shop on consignment. I
think the shop owner is trying to make a big commission on it. It is a
standard build with Deore hub wheels with $500 worth of racks. Way over
priced.
I told him if the price came down to 3K I would be interested it.
I can wait. I have too many bikes as it is. I was hoping to shake one
loose from somebody on the list.

Looking for a 60cm Platypus. Would like to buy just a frame but might do a
whole bike.
Would be nice to find one in mid-Atlantic area. Shipping is a pain
Have some bikes to trade or will buy.

"Riding-a-bicycle Zen"

John Rinker : Feb 12 07:51PM -0800

You paint a lovely picture of your ride, brendanoid! To me, the crux of the
matter is here: "When the crunching and the pedaling and the euphoria of no
thoughts at all..." In my experience, the 'no thoughts' is more about
letting the thoughts come and go as I pedal along and open my attention to
my surroundings. Riding a bicycle seems to provide the right balance of
flow and attention that makes the focus on my breath and the non-attachment
to my thoughts somewhat easier...sometimes.

"...yet the zen can still be gotten even here." I agree, Phillip. There's
no place like the present, no matter where that may be. I ride in similar
environments here in Yokohama (minus homeless encampments). No matter the
place, pedaling along, paying attention to my breathing, and encouraging an
awareness of my surroundings is an enjoyable part of my riding experience.

"Traditional expounders of the Zen form of Buddhism describe something a
little more rigorous than a couple of scholars shooting the breeze." For
sure, Patrick. I'm not exactly sure of the nature of Watts' and Blyth's
conversation, 'shooting the breeze' was my own interpretation. I just loved
that bicycles and Zen came into it. Tradition can be illuminating and it
can be calcifying. Certainly, rigor is demanded in scholarship and the
definition of terms like 'suffering', 'death', 'ego' and 'non-pre-existing
results' require it. (If only the neo-Platonists had bicycles!) But, I am
of the mind that perhaps, 'lightly' can offer another way in which to
approach the practice (rather than the scholarship) of being attentive to
the distinction between our thoughts arising from experience and our
experience itself.

I do enjoy many activities that give me the space to try and notice these
things, but I do enjoy riding a bicycle most of all.

Cheers,
John

2021-11-07 Thread Richard Borneman
Thanks for the input. Think I'm going to try some Choco bars. Probably
won't get built back up until this winter some time.
Heading up to the Philly Bike Expo this morning. Looking forward to talking
with the folks from Rivendell and looking at all the other cool bikes and
gear.

[RBW] Bars For Sam

2021-11-06 Thread Richard Borneman
I have a 62cm Sam frame that I built up with Drop bars (Noodles) and it
just felt too big for me. I Was going to sell it but I'm thinking maybe I
should try some more upright bars before I let it go.
 I am 6'-02" with a 93cm PBH. I have a 64 cm MIT Atlantis and a 64cm Rambo
that are very comfortable for me with 10cm stem and Noodle bars.
The effective TT length is 61.5 on the Sam frame opposed to 59-60 on the
other two frames. Thinking I'd like to try Bosco or Choco bars and a
shorter stem.
I have always used drop bars. Have a set of Moustache bars that I tried
and couldn't get comfortable with. I would like to have a flat section
close to the stem so the 2 bars I mentioned look like they are the ones to
try.
Anyone else gone through this when trying to get comfortable on the newer
sloped top tube Riv frames?
Anybody have some wide Choco or Bosco bars they want to sell or trade?
I have a like new Moustache and some Noodle bars to swap.

[RBW] Re: Black hole of mixing Campagnolo and Shimano

2020-11-24 Thread Richard Borneman
I have a couple bikes set up with Campy pre-2001 "pointy" levers and
Shimano drivetrain and #4 Shiftmate. Works great. The Campy levers are much
better than the Shimanos.
