[RBW] FS: Hubbuhubbuh M complete tandem - $2,500 - SF Bay Area

2019-10-26 Thread René Sterental
This was an emotional purchase, an exciting and fun experience building and
riding it, but the reality is that I haven’t anyone to ride it regularly
and it’s just sitting in my garage taking space.

Price includes local pickup or delivery combination, and I’m throwing in
the Thule tandem roof bike carrier as well, which sells for $480 list
price:
https://www.thule.com/en-us/bike-rack/roof-bike-racks/thule-tandem-carrier-_-3286

Photos of the tandem:
https://flickr.com/photos/25160594@N05/sets/72157680299609103

If you’re in the greater SF Bay Area or even further away and interested,
let me know as I’d be happy to coordinate whether I drive it to you, you
come to pick it up, or we meet in the middle.

[RBW] Cheviot 60cm for sale - $2,500 + shipping

2019-08-20 Thread René Sterental
Hello again!

Life has happened and with it, a serious health wake-up call, which has set
me again on the bike stable reduction path, among other reductions.

I have decided to put my wonderful Cheviot 60cm for sale, hoping that a
miracle will happen and someone wanting to get one just like it, will
pop-up in the SF Bay Area (ideally), or else I'll ship it. If no one
appears, I'll then do the usual disassembly and offer the frame and parts
separately. I put too much love into it, so would rather have someone enjoy
it as is, instead of all parted. But it will be what it is meant to be.

At this time, the bike is assembled with:
- Standard BB and headset as assembled in RBW.
- Sugino double (plus chain) guard crankset
- Vault platform pedals (chrome)
- 9 speed XT cassette
- 9 speed downtube shifters mounted on the stem with the adapter RBW
sells/sold.
- Sun XCD rear derailer 8,9 & 10 speed compatible
- Sun XCD front derailer
- Paul Racer F/R brakes chrome
- Paul Cantilever brake levers chrome
- Nitto Mark front rack
- Nitto Big Back Rack Medium
- King Iris cage
- Edelux II dynamo light
- Front SON dynamo hub (For Peter White) laced to a chrome 36 hole Velocity
Atlas rim
- Rear White Industries MI5 hub laced to a chrome 36 hole Velocity Atlas rim
- Nitto Choco bar and stem
- Brooks leather grips
- Compass Snoqualmie 700x44 tires
- Honjo smooth fenders
- Nitto lugged S84 setback seat post
- Brooks B17 Select saddle or B67 Select sprung saddle

Photos available here:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/albums/72157674336110365

Everything is in perfect condition. Asking for $2,500 + shipping
separately. If shipping, I'll have the bike packed at my LBS, which would
add around $50-100 for their packing. Shipping to CONUSA via Bike Flights
should be another $100 or so.

With a heavy heart,

René

[RBW] FS: 61cm A. Homer Hilsen - Frame + Fork + Headset or Almost Complete

2018-07-19 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

Continuing on my (slow) downsizing project, I've decided to sell my 61cm
Waterford built AHH. The bike is in excellent condition with just a few
paint chips.
- Frame, fork & DuraAce headset: $ 1,000 + shipping via Bike Flights

While the bike is still assembled, I can include:
- Sugino XD2 Triple crankset: $110
- Phil BB: $100
- Shimano XT / Mavic A719 36 spoked Rich-built Wheelset: $300
- Paul Center-pull brakes with Yokozuna pads: +$200 for the set F/R
- Shimano DuraAce 9 speed downtube shifters: $50
- Shimano RD-M772 9 speed rear derailer: $50
- Campagnolo Mirage triple front derailer 9 speed: $30
- Shimano 9 speed cassette 12-36: $20
- Nitto Mark's Rack original (with front tab): $100
- Compass BonJon Pass 700x35 Extralight tan sidewall with lots of life left
(center grooves very visible): $100
- King Iris bottle cages: $12 each or both for $20

If the frame sells alone, these plus other parts will be available for sale
individually.

Not including seat post, saddle, pedals or cockpit. For local pickup in the
SF Bay Area, I'll leave the Honjo fenders mounted, if shipping, most likely
will need to remove, but will include for free if you want them.

Offers accepted.

Re: [RBW] Re: Cycling around Downtown Washington DC...

2018-05-05 Thread René Sterental
Thanks again for every suggestion and insight, and especially to the super
awesome person who had a bike map delivered/dropped at the hotel for me. I
wish you had signed your name, as I certainly was touched by the gesture.
Regrettably, the work plans got all complicated and I ended up leaving the
bike home. However, I expect to be able to make some room on Monday to rent
a bike and go for a ride.

With all the new guidelines and suggestions plus my brand new map, I’ll
certainly try to ensure I can bring my bike whenever another chance comes
up to come to DC.

You guys all rock!

could get an Uber to go somewhere and put the bike in the trunk as an

What do the locals recommend? Any nice rides, not in the middle of
traffic that would be worth doing? Any riding trails in the area worth
exploring? Most of my potential rides would likely be 60-90 minutes long at
 most.

Thanks for any suggestions and recommendations,

Re: [RBW] Pre-MIT Atlantis vs. Hunq for more roadish riding

2018-03-22 Thread René Sterental
Hi Tom,

For whatever it's worth, I had a Hunqapillar and (still) an Atlantis. When
I had to decide which one to keep, and since I was doing pretty much just
road riding, the Atlantis won hands down. I don't really know what it was
exactly that made the difference, but riding the Atlantis was heaven to
earth compared to riding the Hunqapillar on the road for me.

I'm trying to downsize, which is why now the Atlantis frame is for sale.
Even though my custom and my Atlantis have the same tubing, the custom fits
so perfectly that again, I perceive its ride quality to be much more suited
to me. Without the custom, only my Homer was superior to the Atlantis for
road riding.

Re: [RBW] Atlantis fork axle to crown

2018-03-22 Thread René Sterental
Hi Mike,

Sorry about the delay, I was out of town.

My original Atlantis fork for my 61cm 700c frame measures about 39.4cm
(hard to get an exact measurement) in a straight line from the top of the
crown (right above the middle white dot) to the center of the axle, and
when trying to measure along the curve of the fork, the measurement comes
to about 41cm.

If you need more precision than that, I can try using a string and then
measuring the string, but I'd need to enroll my wife to help me out.

Hope this helps,

René

[RBW] Bump - FS: 61cm Waterford Atlantis frame, low trail custom fork and CK headset - $1,500 OBO

2018-03-22 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

The upcoming lower cost Taiwanese Atlantii calls for a reduction in the
asking price for my beloved frame. Now asking $1500 including shipping to
CONUSA or pickup in the SF South Bay for $1400.

Included is the Chris King headset with a drilled cable stop I was using to
attach the Berthoud decaleur so it wouldn't interfere with the height or
type of handlebar, plus a fork mounted cable stop for the cantilever brakes
you'll probably use.

Note: The custom low trail fork has a maximum tire size or 700x40 and 50mm
fenders. The original fork has a capacity of 50mm tires, and is also
included. Even though the paint color is theoretically the same, it doesn't
quite match the new custom paint job I had done when the custom fork was
made and painted.

but if you're interested, contact me off-list.

I'll have the frame packed by my LBS and shipping will be via Bike Flights.

[RBW] FS: Low Trail custom paint 61cm 700c Atlantis FF+CK headset - $1,800 shipped OBO

2018-03-04 Thread René Sterental
The time has come. I finally had some time to dissasemble the bike and am
posting the frame, custom low trail fork + original fork for sale. Included
is the Chris King headset with a drilled cable stop I was using to attach
the Berthoud decaleur so it wouldn't interfere with the height or type of
handlebar, plus a fork mounted cable stop for the cantilever brakes you'll
probably use.

Note: The custom low trail fork has a maximum tire size or 700x40 and 50mm
fenders. The original fork has a capacity of 50mm tires, I believe. Even
though the paint color is theoretically the same, it doesn't quite match
the new custom paint job I had done when the custom fork was made and
painted.

Other parts will be posted in time, when I have time to clean them nicely,
but if you're interested, contact me off-list.

I'll have the frame packed by my LBS and shipping will be via Bike Flights.

Let me know if you have any questions or other offers.

Thanks Ted!

Makes perfect sense. I'm not riding drop bars now, but if I ever switch

Re: [RBW] Re: Low Trail 61 cm Atlantis frame, fork and CK headset for sale - 700c

2017-12-27 Thread René Sterental
Hi Tom,

The short version of the story (you can look for the long versions by
searching for my old posts) is that when riding my Atlantis initially with
a medium saddlebag for my commute, I discovered it would shimmy when going
faster, especially on slight downhills. A search online for shimmy (first
time I encountered it) led to an article that someone had posted earlier
about curing the shimmy on their Atlantis with a custom low-trail fork.
That led to a search and education on what fork trail meant, a discovery of
Jan’s (and others) writings, etc.

Some time later, perhaps a year or so, can’t remember exactly now, I asked
Tom Matchak to make two custom low trail (40mm based on Jan’s
recommendations) forks for my Atlantis and Hunqapillar. That led to a
custom repaint job for both bikes as well. I never liked the gray/plum
original Hunqapillar colors, so I had it repainted in pewter and cream
which I loved, but on both the Homer and the Atlantis, I think the original
colors selected by Grant and painted by Waterford were so perfect I
couldn’t do better, so the custom details were the down tube panel and the
decals the painter (RBW official painter) had.

I loved how both bikes handled with their low trail forks, switched to
front loading and the rest is history... :-)

Needless to say, I’ve never had shimmy on the Atlantis again. Whether it
was the low trail fork, switching to front loading vs rear loading, a
combination of both or whatever, is not important to me. IMHO, the ride of
the Atlantis as I rode it, improved significantly. I’m not contesting
people who front load their bikes with the original geometry and say it’s
fine; this is not the point. But, for those who would like to get a better
handling (again IMHO) front loaded Atlantis, this is a significant
improvement.

BTW, I’m also including the original fork with the frame, so any buyer is
welcome to do their own tests and compare.

And, if current asking price feels too high, please feel free to make an
offer.

Happy (almost) New Year to you as well! :-)

Re: [RBW] Re: My low-trail Atlantis is coming up for sale...

2017-12-26 Thread René Sterental
Apologies for any confusion I may have created. I probably shouldn’t have
sent out this “feeler” to the group. After a few days of more careful
consideration, I’ve decided to disassemble the bike and sell the frame/fork
and parts separately, while keeping some of them to move to my Homer, which
I’m going to be keeping for now. At some point in the future, there may be
a decision between keeping the Homer vs. the Cheviot, but each of these is
unique enough on its own and aside from riding preferences, distinct enough
to my custom as well.

I’ve created a separate thread for the frame and fork and even though the
timing isn’t optimal, right after Christmas, and given that I’m in no rush,
we’ll see what happens.

You can imagine how I’m battling my emotions on this issue, after putting
so much love, care and money on my Atlantis. It’s just that this is what I
need to do now, so please, excuse my clumsiness.

Sometimes it’s not easy to do the right thing, but I want this bike to be
ridden and enjoyed, not just remain hanging in my garage. And I also want
to own less stuff.

Happy New Year!

[RBW] Low Trail 61 cm Atlantis frame, fork and CK headset for sale - 700c

2017-12-25 Thread René Sterental
Hi all,

Hope everyone has had a very hice holiday!

I’ve decided to break down the bike and move some of the parts to my Homer,
so in this post I’m offering my custom painted (original color but custom
details) 61 cm (700c) frame, low trail fork made by Tom Matchak and Chris
King silver headset. The condition of the paint is perfect, except for the
typical area behind the crank where the chain marks the paint when it gets
sucked and stuck between the ring and the chain stay.

Please note, the custom low trail fork is made for a maximum of a 50mm
fender - maximum tire width of 42 - 44, unlike the original that can take a
60mm fender and a 50 mm tire.

Asking $2,200 + shipping via Bike Flights.

Will be listing the rest of the parts separately, but if interested in some
of the following, I won’t need to remove them:
- Paul Comp Touring Cantilever polished front and rear brakes - $200
- Front and Rear Nitto 27F low-rider racks - attached to the brakes above
$500 (including the brakes as I won’t have to go through the hassle of
removing them) - I’m selling the racks alone for $400 including shipping,
but have two interested buyers so waiting on them in case the buyer of the
frame doesn’t want the racks. First priority will go the the buyer of the
frame as I’d rather not detach the racks and brakes at all.

I have yet to disassemble the bike, will do so by the end of the week and
detailed photos will be provided.

If interested in any other parts, let me know. I’ve decided to keep the
wheel set and the RH crankset to put on the Homer.

Happy New Year!

[RBW] My low-trail Atlantis is coming up for sale...

2017-12-19 Thread René Sterental
Hello all and Happy Holidays!

As part of my ongoing journey with life and cycling and other stuff, the
next step in downsizing has arrived. The short story is that I'm going to
put my custom fork low-trail 61cm Atlantis (custom painted) for sale. I
know the odds of selling it complete are very low, but nevertheless, if
anyone is interested in making any offers, please e-mail me privately. Most
likely, it will be disassembled to sell as frame + fork + headset + any
additional parts the buyer wants, since most people in this list have tons
of parts and want to build the bike to their specs. Still, there may be
someone who says "I was just looking for something like this for my
and this was meant to come my way"... :-)

Photos of the complete bike are here: http://alturl.com/apw7q

I've made some minor changes since these photos were taken and will upload
the most recent photos with the Chocomoose bars and a Brooks saddle.

Here are the details of the complete build:
- 61 cm custom painted (original color + downtube panel & decal with low
trail fork (I'll include the original fork as well, although the paint
looks different)
- 700c 36 spoked polished Atlas rims with rear White Industries MI-5 hub
and front Sondelux Widebody Dynamo hub with 700x38 Compass Barlow Pass
tires.
- 10 speed drivetrain with the René Herse triple crankset, 24/38/46 and
11/36 cassette, and Shimano 10 sp XT chain
- Campagnolo FD
- Shimano XT long cage RD
- Shimano 10 speed downtube shifters
- Smooth Honjo fenders
- King bottle cages
- Nitto S83 seatpost (not the lugged seatpost shown on some of the photos)
- Brooks Cambium C17 saddle
- Choco Moose handlebar
- Shimano brake levers (not the Paul's shown on the images)
- F/R Paul polished Touring Cantilever brakes
- Front Nitto Campee 27F low rider pannier rack
- Rear Nitto Campee 27F pannier rack
- Edelux 2 polished front light

The main reason for my decision is that after I got my Steve Rex Custom,
this bike truly fits me wonderfully and has exceeded all my expectations in
terms of fit, comfort, feeling one with the bike, etc. There is a ton of
overlap between my custom and my Atlantis, which actually was instrumental
in helping me understand how I wanted my bike to fit me and feel when
riding it. I've also been moving lately to downsize and reduce clutter, and
having so many bikes (for me) is one of the areas that I strongly feel I
need to address. I don't want to have a wonderful bike just hanging from a
rack because I don't ride it but am too egotistical to let go so it can do
for someone else what it did for me.

And, I'd still have the Homer, the Cheviot, and the Hubbuhubbuh around to
deal with. Plus my Bike Friday Lama to take when traveling and my carbon
Santa Cruz Tallboy LT for MTB, which I haven't done in several years... so
plenty of opportunity to keep what I need and let go what I don't need.

Anyway, if anyone is interested in the whole bike or parts, please e-mail
me privately. I'm in no rush, but want to actually take the next steps.

Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Kwanzaa, and again,
Happy Holidays in case I'm missing any other!!!

Rene

I tried latex tubes on my Homer. Loved the feel, hated the fact I had to
pump the tires up every day, as compared to once a week with the thin

that was it, back to the ultra-light Schwalbe tubes.

+1 for the 1UP. If you get the single one (which can have another one or
two added for a total of 3), you don't even need to open it to get to the
rear door if you have an SUV. Must be the same with a car, but haven't
tested it. I leave mine on permanently and folded; no interference on my

Re: [RBW] Re: How much drop from the bar can I get out of a Berthoud decaleur?

2017-08-15 Thread René Sterental
I've gotten them in the past from:
- Ben's Cycles
- http://www.boulderbicycle.bike
- The Touring Store

Sometimes, based on availability, you have to order the correct length but
a different version and then separately, order the adapter to convert it to
yours. Boulder has that configuration in the 121mm, I believe.

If, by any chance, your brakes don't need a cable hanger (V-brakes) or some
other configuration where the rack doesn't attach to the fork crown and you
have the cable holder placed there (like I do in my Atlantis), you can
adapt a normal cable colder to be the holder for the decaleur:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/27565556620/in/album-72157625129486363/

This has the added advantage that the handlebar height/type doesn't
interfere with the decaleur.

Berthoud makes 60mm steel fenders, which are excellent as well. I had them

Re: [RBW] You meet the nicest people on a Rivendell, even if ....

2017-07-08 Thread René Sterental
Indeed!

I went on vacation for a week with my wife, my son, his high school friends
and a few other parents to Mission Bay, San Diego. It was what my son
wanted as a graduation trip and I really needed a lot of doing nothing to
recover, so not having had a chance to ride much this year and having had a
serious setback with my weight loss battles, I decided to take the Cheviot
to ride around the area.

The rides were on the paved trail/lane/sidewalk that pedestrians and
cyclists on beach cruisers and skateboarders share, so it was nice, slow
and friendly. Most people ignored everyone else around them but there were
no accidents, no impatient riders and barely any lycra roadies. Needless to
say, I got complimented a few times by old ladies and regular guys on how
beautiful the bike was. No one seemed to know anything about Rivendell,
they just said "Beautiful Bike!".

I smiled back and rang my Spur bell every now and then to alert people who
were hogging the trail.

Michael and Patrick,

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions. My son and I just completed our
first one hour ride on the trail at Shoreline Park and things got smoother
and smoother as the ride progressed. We both loved it and discovered quite
a number of subtleties to continue working on.

Michael, that chainring in the middle of the timing chain is genius! Like
an act of magic!

Thanks again!

Julian, thanks for the video!

I had already read about that method as I bought the original book and also
found the information online. However, seeing the video clarified the one
element I was struggling with when applying the technique. It will also
help tremendously to show both my son and my wife.

Regarding the disc brake tab, aside from the alignment issue, which I don't
know if it's common or not, probably the main issue I forgot to mention is
that the caliper is already pushed all the way to the side to try to clear
the rotor; on the Paul brake, it just wasn't enough. On the TRP Skype,
while also being completely pushed outwards, there is somewhat slightly
more "adjustability". Neither of the Paul or TRP calipers come with washers
to allow the caliper to be rotated, the caliper can just slide in or out,
which requires the tab/adaptor to be perfectly parallel to the rotor.
Having used Avid's mechanical brakes in the past, I know they do come with
the washers, just like rim brake pads do, that allow the pads to be set
perfectly parallel to the rotor, even if the caliper/adaptor isn't. For
now, it's working well. I just want to see if there is a way to adjust for
this discrepancy. It may have been an individual quality variation on my
frame, or it's just the normal variation in the process, I don't know that
part. I'm sure I'll figure out how to completely solve for it as I research
the topic more.

Thanks again!

After being away for two weeks for work and waiting for parts, the
Hubbuhubbuh is finally finished!

https://flic.kr/p/Vpyjod - keep scrolling.

I still want to add Fenders, and the front one will be Rinkoed, but I need
more time for that. In the meantime, it's ready to roll and start us on
the tandem riding learning curve.

First maiden ride was with my son, and it quickly highlighted the fact that
we do need to learn how to coordinate our action and do the team dance.
Very short maiden ride in front of the house, and by the end things were
much improved. I still was petrified to take my hands off the grips, no
shifts were done, starting and stopping successful but not smooth yet.

It has made me realize that he and I need to practice plenty before I'm
comfortable enough to try to go for a try with my wife. I don't think it's
going to take long, but it's going to take some work for sure. Tandem
riding seems to be an exhilarating experience, it just adds another
dimension to the experience of riding a bike.

I'm very happy I followed my "gut" and ordered the Hubbuhubbuh when
announced. If you're thinking about getting one on the next order, do so.
It's a whole new experience.

A few notes:

- The recommendation to use the Spar Urethane for the cork grips was
excellent. I really like how they turned out after three coats. Beautiful,
very smooth and great feeling when holding them.

- On my frame, it seems the disc brake tab is not perfectly parallel to the
disc rotor. I swapped the Paul disc brake that like most mechanical disc
brakes only has one piston on the outside which would run the rotor a lot,
with a TRP Spyke mechanical disc brake which has pistons on both sides, and
after adjusting it, almost all of the ribbing was removed, with the wheel
spinning freely. I'm sure the little rubbing that remains will disappear
once I brake-in the pads and rotor, but I'm going to explore how difficult
it would be to straighten that tab, or what can be done about it. I have a
lot of experience with disc brakes on my mountain bikes, but have never had
to deal with this issue before.

- I tried to use a quick link on the timing chain with the idea that it
would make it easy to open the chain to try different front/back pedal
positions, but found that it didn't allow me to get the proper chain
tension, essentially resulting in a extra link. So I removed it and now
only need a very minor twist to the eccentric. With the link and the
eccentric at its maximum chain length adjustment, it still seemed the chain
had too much slop. I saw a chain length recommendation from Mark/Grant but
have yet to count the number of links I currently have. I'll still bring
the Hubbuhubbuh to my LBS mechanic so he can check it and review the disc
brake tab issue.

- Love the Compass SwitchBack Hill 48mm tires. They roll super smooth and
fast. They come to about 50mm mounted on the Hubbuhubbuh rims. I did have
to inflate them beyond their recommended maximum since the tandem plus
riders is so much higher. I'll experiment with the pressure over time to
find the best one. How do folks with tandem experience deal with the tire
pressures?

This is all for now. I'll report as I get more riding experience.

I can't really add anything meaningful regarding which bike to keep/get. My
personal preference is 100% Atlantis over Hunqapillar, but I'm not you.

What I would recommend is for you to ask yourself. "What will I regret the

Selling the Hunqapillar to get the Atlantis or keeping the Hunqapillar?
The answer will probably become obvious to you fairly quickly. It's not
about what you want most or reasons for wanting it, but what you will

Re: [RBW] To shim or not to shim?

2017-05-29 Thread René Sterental
My experiences with the Nitto shims to try to fit 25.4 bars on 26mm stems
is the following:
- Once everything is set, they work very well.
- Installing them is a total PIA, as I end up scratching the bar since it's
so hard to slide them and adjust them in place when the center of the bar
is inside the stem. And I use the Nitto stem stretcher tool to open the
jaws of the stem to try to slide the three pieces in (2 shims + bar).

Maybe I haven't figured the way to do it correctly, which may require two
people + who knows what else, but as I stated, I end up scratching the bars
multiple times.

If anyone knows of a procedure to do it without scratching the bars, please
share.

Re: [RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread René Sterental
I'm talking about their Fender Cushion:
https://www.1up-usa.com/product/fender-cushion/

They don't damage the fenders at all, and the bike is kept quite snug. To
allow for the wide Honjo (650b 62mm) on my custom, I also installed their
Fat Tire adapters, so the fender cushions "float" within the wider adapter,
but it still works very well.

I'll post photos when I get home, during the Memorial Day Weekend.

They sell a roof rack variant, so you could do the same thing, although to
be honest, it may be quite cumbersome to operate on the roof of a car
without a step ladder; don't know for sure, unless the mechanism is
different.

The roof rack I used to use for my fender bikes before, was a Thule rack
that held the bike by the downtube and has apparently now been replaced by
the ProRide model. Since the bike is held by the downtube and the wheels
are tied to the rack, it allows fenders.

Re: [RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread René Sterental
I think the choice of the rack depends on whether you mind/don't mind the
rack attachments to touch your frame. If you don't, then the 1UP is the
best choice (only choice) for fendered bikes and with metal fenders
(haven't tested on plastic) their little covers hold the bike very solidly
even though you are clamping over the rear fender. I've driven hours on the
freeway with my fendered bike(s) on the 1UP with no issues at all.

If you don't mind the bike being held by the frame + tires, then any of the
tray + top tube racks work. Saris, Thule and Yakima offer variations on the
theme.

IMO, the one huge practical advantage of the single 1UP (you can manually
add up to three racks for those occasions, is that as I stated, I can leave
it permanently attached to the rear of the car and don't need to be
folding/unfolding it every time I need to put something in the back. Since
most of the time I'm just taking my bike somewhere for a ride, and it's
only on special occasions that I drive more people/bikes, this works
stupendously for me. And, as stated, the 60 Cheviot fits perfectly.

Re: [RBW] 60cm Cheviot Owner Questions: Which Hitch-mounted Bike Racks Work & Largest Tire Width With Fenders

2017-05-22 Thread René Sterental
I'm using the 1up rack with no issues on my 60cm Cheviot with the 44mm
Compass tires and 51mm Honjo fenders.

I bought the 1up Super Duty 2" single carrier + 1 bike extension which
allows me to leave it permanently on my Highlander and doesn't interfere
with opening the rear hatch when folded up. I add the second one only when
necessary.

Haven't measured the exact wheelbase, can do it when I go home on Friday
(traveling on business this week) but haven't had any issues. There are
some tips I can give you on positioning the bike with the fenders, but
they're very easy to figure out.

Those who've used wider tires can only fit them with plastic fenders, that
have less wraparound coverage in terms of width.

With Honjo, the ideal tire is the 38mm for perfect safe clearance, but for
city riding, you can get away with the 44mm tires comfortably. If you check
my photos, you can see it clearly. You do need to go with wider centerpull
brakes. https://flic.kr/p/N3JTfB

Wonderful!

What tires and fenders are you using? I'm going to try to install (and
rinko the front fender) the Honjo smooth 650b x 62mm fender over the
Switchback Hill tires, even though Compass recommends going with a wider
one that they don't have or know about yet. They recommend going 40% wider

fender and the tire.

On the fork, there is currently 25mm of clearance (plenty more in the rear)
so I need to go with a really thin daruma, or else, use an L-bracket.

How much clearance do you have?

Re: [RBW] Kickstand Props

Beware that the double stand when used against the kickstand plate in the
frame alone is not recommended by RBW since a few plates have been
bent/broken. They only recommend the single one. If you want to use the
double, they recommend using the top/bottom plates that attach to the chain
stays, but may marr them.

I have switched all my bikes to single kickstands, although for several
years I used the double on my Atlantis with no ill effects.

2017-05-10 Thread René Sterental
Hmmm... now in a conundrum... which should I use?

Don't like the idea of the varnish getting slick (and sticky or running
off?) with soggy leather gloves as when riding in the heat or rain (no
plans for that now), wondering how sticky or slippery shellac may get on
the same conditions, but then again, RBW has countless uses and its what
they use again and again...

Perhaps it's just "safer" to go with shellac, especially since the captain
grips will get twined to hold the cable for the barend shifters.

Any last minute strong recommendations? Those like RonMc who suggest using
the varnish, did you first use shellac and found it lacking?

Very cool. Let us know about the clearance for the stoker as you test it
with several people. I'm going to use the Carradice roll bag, but the RBW
would have been a preferable choice if it came in blue. I'd have put the
small blue saddlesack in the back.

Bag matching is awesome!

Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-09 Thread René Sterental
Hi Patrick,

On my Medium, I chopped off 5 inches from the super long steerer tube,
which leaves about 63mm above the headset. The height of the threadless
Bullmoose stem is about 42mm, which leaves me with plenty of room to play
with with spacers above and below the stem to fine tune the height. If I
ever want to change to Choco bars, for example, I have the Nitto high rise
stem from RBW as well, which will provide the necessary height at the bar
ends.

I have just been able to (and actually couldn't resist) rolling on the bike
in my patio to verify that the height of the bars was fine, as I still
haven't received the brakes. More parts are arriving today, but I'll have
to check on those brakes again.

Interesting little adaptor. And thanks for the compliment, I too had
doubts, which is why I installed a piece on the frame first, and then ran
the cable to the disc brake. We'll see once all the cables are run.

[RBW] On rear racks for the Hubbuhubbuh...

2017-05-07 Thread René Sterental
I just realized that none of my racks, possibly with the exception of the
R14 will fit on my Hubbuhubbuh due to its disc brake. I did a quick search
online, and found what I consider ugly black disc compatible rear racks,
with the exception of the Tubus Disco Rear Rack, which can be found in
silver in the UK. However, I can't tell if it's the version that is painted
in silver and has a coating on top, which I dislike, or true silver metal
like the Tubus Nova (unlikely because that one is stainless steel) or
chromoly like the Nitto racks.

I have no urgent need for a rear rack right away, and similar to what Bill
did, was planning on installing the Nitto Mini F32 so I can add a basket or
just a small front bag, plus the Tubus Nova lowriders, where I can load
front/small panniers. Will need to check how the handling is affected, if
at all.

As stated, for the type of riding I'll be doing initially, with my wife,
children and friends, I won't need to carry a lot, and I plan on having
Carradice roll bags on each handlebar plus a Barley saddlebag, all
matching, of course... :-)

Anyway, this might be a consideration/concern for those of you getting
Hubbuhubbuhs and are planning to run the disc drag brake and want a silver
rack. There are plenty of black racks available with different pros and
cons, it's just that I don't like much like them.

Will let you know if the R14 fits, which would allow me to swap the Burley
for the large Sackville Saddlebag as necessary.

Re: [RBW] Re: The Hubbuhubbuhs are here!

2017-05-07 Thread René Sterental
As I've been doing some research on the subject, it's apparent that this is
just how people have been setting up their drag brakes forever, at least as
far back as I've been able to research, which is several decades. Remember,
it's not that you have to press hard to stop the bike, you just need to
pull the brake lever to get some friction on the disc. Drum brakes which I
think need a higher level of force compared to large disc brake rotors have
been set up this way with no adverse issues.

Perhaps someone else knows more?Fed

I had no idea there was a brown cabling option, but like you, now everyone
