[RBW] Re: Thoughts on albastach bars

2020-08-14 Thread Rob H.
I currently have albastache with 10cm dirtdrop stem on my soma san marcos
and really like it. It took me awhile to get used to the weird aesthetic
of dirtdrop stem but having the albastache bars up that high really does
maximize comfort and the variety of hand positions. The rear grip area
(near my bar end shifters) is very similar to using albaTROSS bars, and the
forward area offers 2 different positions: in the loops which is similar
to a straight bar, and on the hoods which is also pretty comfy. Adding
stoker levers or Dia Compe knob grips near the stem can supposedly offer a
4th hand position but I haven't tried that

[RBW] Re: Soma San Marcos questions....

2016-06-21 Thread Rob H.
I've got a "700c" 54 SM (first generation) and like it a lot. It's a little
bit odd because I bought it used off CL from some guy and it actually has
the shorter fork (650b for the 51cm SM) on it. So my solution, ultimately,
after getting tired of only being able to run super narrow tires on it so
it would rub up against the underside of the fork and front brakes, was to
put a 650b wheel up front. Now i've got 35mm wide tires on it and looks
like room for fenders still.

Also don't know if you're in the SF Bay Area but there was someone trying
to sell a built up 51cm SM on CL. I think they were in the South Bay
possibly a bike shop. At any rate, the listing expired (not deleted) so it
might pop up again and if you've got the cajones you could go give it a
test ride / kick the tires so to speak.

family member, that can pick it up in the SF Bay Area for $1250 firm.

[RBW] WTT: Two 700 x 40c Schwalbe Marathon tires for two 650b tires

I have two pairs of 700 x 40c Schwalbe Marathon tires: One set are the
knobby Marathon Extremes (like new) and one set are the slick Marathon
Supremes (less than 100 miles). I don't really need both of them but do
need a pair of durable 650b tires for a Betty Foy build. Make me an offer!

Located in the SF Bay Area, prefer local trade.

[RBW] sadly FS: my 56cm orange Sam Hillborne and my 60cm green SimpleOne framesets

2015-04-21 Thread Rob H.
Sigh, I'm realizing that I just don't ride these bikes enough.

Just rode to Pinnacles NP from SE San Jose (near Santa Teresa VTA station)
this past weekend on the Hillborne because my Homer was in the shop. A very
fun ride and the Sam was a very trusty steed on its maiden voyage and has
about 160 miles on it, all from last weekend.

The SimpleOne served as my commute bike across town for six months and was
good at that, it's probably got about 300 miles on it. But what I've
realized is that my 59cm Hilsen just fits the best. The bars on the Sam are
a little low and the top tube on the SimpleOne is...ahem...a little high.
So I think it's time to sell the framesets.

I bought the Sam in 2010 I think. It's one of the last Taiwan-made, orange
Sams with the single top tube. A beautiful frame and I like that they're
from Taiwan. Still in excellent condition. I'm selling with the headset
installed. I want to keep all the other components, including the bottom
bracket. Brake cable stops at headset and seatpost binder included.

And the SimpleOne was bought in 2011 and against the advice of the guys at
Riv (who I should've listened to) I bought a 60cm instead of a 58cm. Still
in excellent condition. Either way I realized I want to have gears so I'm
selling the frameset with headset installed and am open to also selling the
Lesnik-made rear wheel (Suzue hub and Velocity Synergy rim, 32 hole). It
currently has a White Industries 16t/18t DOS ENO freewheel on one side and
an ACS Crossfire 22t freewheel on the other side which can remain if you
want the wheel. I'd also like to keep the bottom bracket for this guy too.
Brake cable stops at headset and seatpost binder included.

I'm based in the San Francisco Bay Area and would prefer local pickup but I
can get it boxed up and shipped if necessary. Thanks for looking and
contact me if you have interest. Things I am kind of interested in: the
English jacket and the orange MUSS rain pants.

So is it a 1 threadless or 1-1/8 threadless?

[RBW] San Marcos clip in Bicycle Times

I'm looking forward to building up my San Marcos frameset this fall as my go-to

[RBW] Re: OT(ish): Is there such thing as a modern mixte touring bike?

2012-05-19 Thread Rob H.
I believe Velo Orange is starting to design another Mixte bike. If
it's anything like the last one, it'll have a 1 threaded headset,
132.5mm rear spacing, and of course be a Cr-Mo frame, possibly lugged
with the double top tube (not the same as the Rivendell 2TT!). I'm
hoping they just give it a matte black color like the first
Polyvalent. I think that would look very good with the orange
lettering.

[RBW] Re: Where does the Rivendell Rambouillet fit in with other Rivs?

2012-04-11 Thread Rob H.
Ryan,

If you're looking for something similar to the Ram I've read that the
SOMA San Marcos is pretty close in lightness and zippiness. I hope to
find this out for myself, maybe for christmas...And alas, like the Ram
it has no mid-fork braze ons for a front rack. Nothing a couple of P
clamps couldn't fix.

On Apr 11, 11:56 am, Cyclofiend Jim cyclofi...@earthlink.net wrote:
One thing we tend to take a little for granted these days was the
comparative lack of appropriate tires, brake and such which we are
currently enjoying. At the time, the common brakes were typically short
reach, and though the Rambouillet was designed for significant clearance,
there was just not a lot of hardware which supported that idea.  I recall
GP lamenting in his end-of-year wish lists in Readers from then that he was
hoping for standard reach brakes from the major manufacturers.

When the Silver Brakes came out, this let GP start working on a truly large
clearance, go-anywhere bike, which became the Hilsen.  The Hilsen kind of
slid the scale one way, and then the Roadeo was able to be notched a bit
more toward the light and snappy (though, significantly, with no loss of
 clearances) range.

Without any real destination I was hoping just to get lost somewhere

[RBW] New SimpleOne owners, how are you liking the Dos Eno?

2011-06-17 Thread Rob H.
The 16t/19t White Industries DOS ENO freewheel seems to be sold out on
Riv's website so there must be a lot of SimpleOne owners who are now
installing these on their wheels. Does anyone know if are able to get
all four gear/chainring combinations between the 16/19 and the Sugino
40/32? I'm interested in this setup but only if i can get all four
combinaions. Otherwise I think I'll just go simpler and have 18t as
the main cog and 22t on the flip side of a free/free rear wheel.

I can sell him a 55cm Schwinn Crosspoint, a cyclocross/touring bike

racks and panniers.

[RBW] Re: bars for a simpleone?

2011-05-04 Thread Rob H.
i'm already planning what the first and second iteration will be:
jitensha flat handlebars during its early years as primarily a
commuter, then either noodle or moustache for longer rides...

On May 4, 4:06 pm, andrew hill neurod...@gmail.com wrote:
just put a deposit on a SimpleOne.. trying to decide on the bars.

i've never really been a fan of drop bars, e.g. growing up as a kid in the
70s.. and the couple of times i've tried them over the intervening decades
haven't really changed my mind - the front ends have felt pretty squirrely
(but these were mostly skinny tires, too).

i've got a canti-Rom with mustache bars and a Hillborne with bullmoose bars -
love them both, although the front-end of the Hillborne is a bit floppy when
 unloaded.

i figured that my lack of enthusiasm for drops was d/t build (very long
torso, short legs - 5'11 w 84 pbh).  that being said, i'm wondering if there
is something i'm missing in not getting used to drops.

so i guess.. is there anything about a quickbeam/simplone that should
influence my anti/pro stance on drops?

anyone like other bars on their QBs, etc?
also wondering about albatross - anyone have pics of those on a QB?

 thank,
 andrew

[RBW] Re: Wald Baskets

I've got Mark's rack and basket for my bike which has drop handlebars.
I think you might find it difficult to mount an axle-mounted basket on

well two of those models (the lower priced bleriot and saluki) aren't

Considering they are posting in SFbay, wouldn't it be relatively easy
to go down to rbwhq and get a new one for about that amount of money?
