[RBW] Bullmoose Bars - Your Experiences?

2018-08-01 Thread Zach Duval
I've got a pair on my Crust Romanceur that's set up as a trail and dirt tourer.
I use them mostly on singletrack but have had them out on an overnighter
covering about 120 miles in two days.

I really like them, and they hold up surprisingly well on long rides for me. I
have bars about an inch above the saddle and Brooks Ergon grips.

[RBW] Re: Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-16 Thread Zach Duval
I waffled a bit between the two, honestly, but chose the Romanceur for its road
to trail capability. I'm building it up first as a MTB (inspired by Benedict's
proto), mostly because I've long been curious to try the Bullmooses for trail
riding, but it'll likely evolve into more of a roadish trail bike. I wanted
that versatility, and as a lighter rider (145 pounds or so), I figured the plus
tires aren't necessary.

I'll ride it as a MTB, to complement my Hillborne, up mountainous terrain and

I plan to run 26" wheels, with 2.3 or so knobbies, probably on Velocity Blunt

[RBW] Hunq-ish Romanceur build with Riv Bullmoose bars

2017-01-14 Thread Zach Duval
Anyone want to play build designer on my dime?

Apologies if this is off topic (non-Riv frame), but I'm looking for advice on
building up my Crust bikes Romanceur frame into a Hunq-inspired trail bike.
(This is sort of a poor-ish man's Riv, but with disc brakes).

So far I've only got the bars and a SUNXCD crankset (46-28, after the 28 was
mistakenly shipped instead of a 30).

What additional drivetrain parts would you spec?

[RBW] Crankset snafu and front derailleur conundrum

2016-12-29 Thread Zach Duval
I ordered a SUNXCD double crankset through a European dealer for a new build,
and unfortunately they included a 28 tooth chainring in place of the 30 I
ordered. The large chainring is a 46, so this now leaves me with an 18 tooth
gap rather than 16.

Are there any attractive front derailleurs that can handle that range?

I'm hoping to run the Riv Bullmoose bars with Microshift (I believe) bar ends
on thumbies.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-07-01 Thread Zach Duval
Bartender bags, I meant, not bar bag.

I work in the newsroom for the Kalispell newspaper, and it has been a complete
shit show since the attack. A former coach of the victim (he was a runner as
well as a forest service agent) was quoted in an initial report, and he has
since fled town after the resultant media assault. One of the British papers
put it humorously with a headline that "the bear is wanted by police."

This shouldn't frighten you too much of course. Bear spray at the hip and the
ability to make lots of noise, especially before blind corners, should leave
you plenty safe. Also, be sure to stop in Whitefish for pizza and a delicious
beer!

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose on a Sam Hillborne

2016-05-05 Thread Zach Duval
To me, this sounds like a fantastic idea, and I'd like to give it a try
myself. Position-wise, I think they'd be great for trails and rougher
terrain; my reservation is more about whether they'd be overkill for the
type of trails I'd take my Hillborne on ... not particularly aggressive,
but definitely "stretching" the bike's abilities (being a lighter rider has
its benefits for such purposes, of course).

For "fun and fitness on gravel and paved trails" or roads, you might just
consider the Albatross, which should offer more hand-position variety, and
a more relaxed position.

Good luck with your Sam! I got mine around the same time last year, and
it's wonderful, a perfect all-purpose bike.

Re: [RBW] Rivs on the Great Divide Route?

2016-03-25 Thread Zach Duval
Last year was an exceptionally dry year, and a nasty fire season was the
result. This year's snowpack around the Flathead (and probably extending
north) is somewhere around 100% of average. By July you should be fine, but
this is something to keep in mind if making comparisons to last year's
conditions.

I moved to the Flathead Valley last August, and don't have a lot to add to
what Jonathan wrote concerning bear precautions. However, if by Whitefish
you're up for more upscale camping, I'd highly recommend looking into the
Whitefish Bike Retreat. The owner is super cool and has raced the Divide
several times. Catering to Divide riders is basically her niche, and she
could offer lots of info and probably several 2016 ride reports by the time
you'll be coming through.

I was hoping to make it down to Missoula on my Sam, but have recently
started a new job and won't be able to swing any extra time off work. Good
luck with your ride!

[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for riding Sandals?

2016-03-14 Thread Zach Duval
Well, I got home from work the other day and found that my newly adopted
doggie (just over a year old, lab/collie mix) had rummaged his way into my
closet, proceeding to destroy one of my Birkenstocks. Luckily, I'd been
mulling over options for new multi-purpose sandals as it was, looking for
something more suited for water (lots of great but rocky lakeshores to
cycle to in NW MT).

Chacos are a popular choice, but they're heavy, and the sole looks so bulky
I imagine I'd have to raise and lower my seat every time I'd use them.

My favorite riding shoes are a pair of Asics Ultimate 81s, which are
basically the opposite of stiff. I like to feel the pedal underfoot and
flex my foot around the pedal for increased stability for rougher terrain.
A bit of online research has led me to the Xero Trail model, very
minimalist "sport sandals," which sound great for off-bike use (and they
float in water!). However, I prefer Thin Gripsters with pins in place, and
I worry the sole would be easily torn by these pedals.

So, I guess what I'm looking for is something in-between Chacos and the
Xeros. Anyone have suggestions?

[RBW] Re: 650BX1.95 on a side-pull Sam?

2015-12-24 Thread Zach Duval
My Sam is recent, purchased in May. Blue 51.

The geo chart for my Sam gives 53 as the space between chainstay crimps. With
Surly Knards, I see at least 3-4mm on either side, maybe more.

The Maxxis Pace supposedly* fits a bit smaller than listed width, at least on
something like my 19mm inner-width rims.

My goal is to find the perfect summer trail tire. I can do about 20 miles,
mostly dirt and gravel roads, to a network of about 30 miles of fantastic
singletrack around Whitefish, MT, as well as some nearby sections of the Great
Divide, but I'don't like to have thebiggest tires I can for it.

*This is, of course, iffy speculation

[RBW] Re: New Hunqapillar frame geometry

2015-12-16 Thread Zach Duval
Which is to say, in my view, it is no longer as well suited as a MTB/tourer,
and leads to greater overlap with others in the Riv line-up.

I'd set a Hunq as my dream mountain tourer, and had hoped to save for one, but
I don't see a longer bike as an improvement. With the changes proposed in the
Blug, it seems like things are getting even harder to differentiate between the
Atlantis, Hunq, and Appa.

[RBW] Re: WTT 52 Bombadil frame for a smaller size

2015-12-12 Thread Zach Duval
The link wouldn'the work for me, but the attached pictures show up just fine.
Looks like a great bike, just a hair too big for me as well. (The double-TT
make it look even bigger than a 52.)

I'm hoping to hold out for a 48 Hunq myself. Will still be awhile longer to
save my pennies, though, as my Sam (51) is only about six months old.

Good luck on your hunt! And if you happen to score a 48 Hunq (which seem sort
of hard to come by?) that for any reason doesn'the work out, be sure to re-list
it!

[RBW] Re: So darn close...

2015-12-07 Thread Zach Duval
Thanks, Phillip. I currently run VO aluminum fenders, which I probably don'the
want to try sawing in half. I'very got a few options (including your
Riv-inspired SKS hack) to mull over. For now, I've got the Knard on the rear
and a ColdVie up front, which may suffice through this winter. Fender-tire
clearance with the Knard isn't as good as I'd hope, but it should be fine for
around town.

I'm leaning towards a single Paul Racer to aid clearance in the front in order
to get the other Knard under thar fender (like the post title says, even with a
Tektro it'seems so darn close). Then eventually springing for the rear to
balance the bike out. I've also got an old Schwinn PDG 50 I've been meaning to
adapt over as a winter commuter, so that may take investment priority. As it
is, oddly enough, even in NW Montana this year, we've not had much snow --
rain's coming down now! -- so I may have time to fine tune that latter option
and keep the Hillborne for fairer weather.

[RBW] Re: Is Joe the evolved Sam?

2015-12-02 Thread Zach Duval
This is basically my thinking on it too. To me, a new owner of a Sam that I
like very much, despite its limitations (e.g. brake choice and clearance),
I don't feel the Joe would bring enough of an upgrade to justify either a
substitution or addition. A longer wheelbase sounds like it could be clunky
on tight singletrack corners, which is where my Sam is most limited, and
the clearance increase wouldn't really justify a *different* bike.

That said, I hope this new model is successful enough to warrant further
explorations. As long as I'm saving my pennies for another Riv, I'll
continue hoping they update the Hunq with clearance for 2.5s!

After spending my morning trying to fit a pair of Surly Knards (650BX41,

Anyone think this combo could work with Paul Racers?

On a side note: Why did Riv ever stop issuing canti-Sams?!

[RBW] Re: AHH Tubing Sticker on Frame

2015-11-22 Thread Zach Duval
Actually, the sticker mentioned above, and that same sticker on my Sam, are
recent developments; I was surprised to find it when the frame arrived. Grant

however, he does seem proud of these proprietary tubes.

I like the science-year feel I get from seeing the sticker on my frame, but I
confess the percentages mean very little to me.

[RBW] Re: Luxos U or Edelux?

2015-10-04 Thread Zach Duval
I think that the issue of reliability is my biggest fear in choosing the
Luxos U, which would otherwise be preferable for the built-in USB output.
However, the suggestion of increased drag over other USB output options as
well as the fact that B seems to be doing away with an option for USB
entirely with their newest light is probably going to steer me toward the
Edelux II, which is also just a much prettier light.

Now to figure out the best mounting option...

[RBW] Re: Compass Switchback Hills (650BX48)

2015-09-23 Thread Zach Duval
I'll settle for my Hillborne running Switchbacks, eventually. It'll be
awhile before I can splurge on a new tire set, but I've definitely made my
mind up that they are pretty darn close to ideal for the riding I do (20ish
miles on pavement to large swathes of fireroads as well as some
singletrack, pushing the bike to its limits for the latter until I can
afford a Hunqa MTB).

Fenders will probably be going on again soon anyway, so I'll have to settle
for 38s through the wet season. When I do eventually get the Switchbacks,
I'll post ride reports for sure.

[RBW] Re: TALES FROM THE TRAIL

2015-08-31 Thread Zach Duval
I had the fairly surreal experience of seeing my first (and only) Riv in
the wild (an AHH) just after placing the order for my Sam frameset. It was
even my size, but alas I was working and unable to take him up on his offer
of letting me test-ride.

Other than folks in the know at shops, my Riv has been recognized once, by
a gentleman who rode an an old Raleigh Competition he'd scored on Ebay (I
was told). After we passed going opposite directions along the street, he
chased me down, expressed his admiration, and mentioned the time he met
Grant in Walnut Creek (this was in Billings, MT).

[RBW] Re: How to get out Brooks sit bone divets sop the rear frame down;t dig into my rear end.

2015-08-30 Thread Zach Duval
Tension and report back?

I've had nothing but favorable impressions (pun semi-intended) of my Brooks
Select (non-sprung), which I've used regularly a bit longer than a year,
other than the damnable dye leaching, which I still haven't solved
satisfactorily. . .

So I have only had this saddle for 10 months and I have divots where the
sit bones sit to the point of feeling the rear of the frame dig into my
rear end when I ride now.

People say these saddles last for 20 years or so. But mine is becoming
 unrideable at this point.

 Any advice?

It is a sprung Flyer, so I am not sure if tension bolt tightening will
help. Wondering if the springs will just rise with the tensioning, making
the saddle more concave and the rear frame piece more pronounced.

Anyone have experience with this? Any solutions?

[RBW] Re: Need advice for avoiding embarrassing Brooks saddle stain...

2015-07-27 Thread Zach Duval
The saddle has seen regular use on my commuter for more than a year, and
only recently has dye transfer become an issue. I've read elsewhere that it
may be that I'm over Proofiding the saddle, but recently I had the issue
both before and after applying oil (I've treated the saddle three times
since new). I'll leave off from adding any more Proofide for the
foreseeable future, and in the meantime wear a cover during longer rides
(which, I agree, is an imperfect fix, as doing so defeats some of my
purpose in using a leather saddle).

As to cycling Yellowstone, I'm unfortunately not much help. I'm a bit east
of the park and reluctantly admit that I've never cycled it (I've really
only progressively gotten more into cycling in the last three years or so).
Hopefully, I'll be able to do Glacier in the near future, though, as that
will be closer to my backyard after this week.

I do know that there is generally a week in the very beginning of the
season where most of the park is open just to cyclists. Otherwise, you are
looking to face some rather heavy traffic, and people's behavior in this
park especially seems to be without concern for safety (Google bison
selfie for quick confirmation). Many people do cycle the park during the
season's heyday, and they live to tell the tale.

Also, ride report and photos: last ride in the Yellowstone Valley, 35
miles, before a relocation brings me into northwestern MT. Cut the basket
off for this ride and very much enjoy the unhindered steering (and will be
doing so for exploratory excursions around the new locale for the next few
weeks).

[RBW] Any Riv riders in or around the Flathead Valley, MT?

2015-07-05 Thread Zach Duval
I'll be moving up to Kalispell, MT at the end of this month, which has me
stoked for MT lake country rides as well as rides into Glacier NP. Being
new to the area, also, I'll be keen to meet a few folks with common cycling
interests who might know local rides well.

Does anyone from this group ride in the area?

[RBW] Re: Finished Sam Hillborne build

2015-06-13 Thread Zach Duval
Thanks all for the kind words.

The pump is in fact a Silca Impero, without the Campy head, but free
(found amidst miscellaneous rubble in basement storage at the LBS I work
at). Doesn't hit high pressure but will fill a tube enough to get me where
I can top 'er off.

The saddle is actually an antique brown Brooks Select with about a year's
use on it, and the handlebar tape is three coats amber shellac over yellow
VO comfy cotton. Great combo but not quite as equal as this picture would
imply.

I look forward to many years and many combinations of build on this
bicycle. Truly a great machine, and so darn pretty.

If anyone is looking to get rid of either a nice smallish handlebar bag
