2017-07-01 Thread davecstein

I did run a 650b synergy wheelset that I had from a Sam Hillborne build with
42mm compass tires. I used those with the cx-70 brakes. They were pretty good
for road riding, I actually liked that setup a lot. Up to that point my
comparison was big apple tires for road and mixed terrain riding which I don't
like as much (vs. the 2.1" smart sams for all trail riding). I eventually sold
the 650b wheelset and put on some rat trap pass tires which I love. But I
wouldn't hesitate to run the 650b setup again. Ymmv.

Re: [RBW] Re: Seattle riding weather

2016-03-08 Thread davecstein
Thanks Shawn, that is what I'm looking for. The summers are so nice and
tempting, I've been there several times in the summer ;).

On the DC front, I've spent a lot of time there and have a pretty good idea
what I'm in for. The winters there can be pretty brutal with several lost
weekends, months even. However it ends in like March, whereas Seattle seems to
last through June?

I guess the whole issue with Seattle is I'm under the impression that the rainy
weather lasts 9 months out of the year, whereas everywhere else it seems
limited to 3-4 months for winter (with some serious thunderstorms and
torrential downpours throughout scattered throughout the rest of the year). Is
that the case?

Thanks everyone for indulging me on this, this is seriously helpful as I need
to start my argument on where to move now with my wife, let it simmer for a
year or two, then make the jump!

Maybe squishy isn't the right adjective then? My concern is I have to pull the
road levers almost all the way then and even then I feel I am not getting near
the stopping power I should be compared to my other bikes (mix of canti's and
calipers and discs).

Also on the minimotos for anyone that knows, should those be run with road

Ha! I saw that yesterday. The price is high and I think I'd want a 52, but I
may go check it out. I'm actually traveling and it'll be a while before I can
check it out but funny timing since I almost never see AHH's for sale

Re: [RBW] Re: Possible WTT 48cm Hunqapillar for AHH

2015-12-29 Thread davecstein
All good questions! I actually have some 650b wheels left over from a Sam I
briefly owned and have been running those on the hunq, outfitted with compass
42mm tires. I ran smart sam's on there for a long time and still have them.

I'm looking for something lighter that climbs better than the hunq. My litmus
test are a few climbs in Oakland including tunnel road. It is noticeably slower
on the hunq than on my go fast road bike (Gunnar), which would be expected.
However, given that the hunq was bought to be my primary mountain bike, and is
no longer serving that purpose, and is in fact seeing way more road miles, my
hope is that a more road oriented Rivendell would make more sense. The
hunqapillar is fine as it is, and if there is not going to be noticeably faster
than I may just stay with that.

But my initial thought process is that an AHH is comparable in price and resale
value to my hunq (while having all the fixings for racks, fenders, kick stands,
etc.), and being lighter and hopefully a little faster, would be a good trade
if there was one to be had. And I also have a 650b wheel set with 2 nice sets
of tires that would fit it nicely. I'm also not really looking to spend any
money, hence the trade aspect of it.

I feel like I've struck out on finding a 52 or 54 ahh at RBW to test, maybe I
need to go back and see what is there. This isn't an urgent thing and I'm happy
riding the hunq and keeping it a long time. But I am very AHH curious ;)

Yeah absolutely, go check it out on the link below and feel free to post rides
or join some roses. You'll need to request membership to keep the spammers out
but I'll approve you right away.

It's pretty small. I started it earlier in the year to meet up with local
rivendell riders since there seems to be so many. Got a good core group of
people on there, we get together once a month or so and have a few people that
post a mix of paced, trail, and s240's. Mostly seems to be east and north bay
but all are welcome across the bay and whatever bike you ride, rivendell or
not.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bullmoose bars and width, who cut theirs?

2015-05-27 Thread davecstein
Thanks! My hand position is pretty locked in with the Ervin grips, maybe I'll
move to bar wrap for a while which gives me area to play with and see how I
like it.

Don't cut them. ;-). By today's MTB standards the bars are already narrow.

Move break levers inward so you can just reach them with your index finger
from the end of the grip and tape up the rest.

I use the full length of my bars.

The width is great for descending (and climbing) but make sure you adjust
your arms to an elbows out position. Will give lots of control and absorb
 shocks better.

Yes, I actually had albatross on these for a while and loved them. However I
ended up stealing them for a hillborne build and wanted to try out the
bullmoose so bought those and put em on. I like the bullmoose bars so far.
Just curious if bars can be 'too wide' and if they should be dialed down a
notch for better leverage or control, or leave them wide. and if bike size
matters to bar width. I'm 5'7 per the other comment.

Have you tried Albastache bars? The curve position is narrower and the
upright position wider. I ride 80% of the time in the curves, 100% of the
single track in the curves. They are road bars, so require a
stem/brake/possibly shifter change in diameter. I love mine, though the
bullmoose were next on my list to try. I've just no reason to continue down
 the list. Grin.
