Hi all, One of the bolts that attaches to the rack stays on the fork of my quickbeam wiggled loose this morning and I'd like to see if I can find a replacement today. [RBW] In Praise of Jitensha Bars
I love my Quickbeam. I've been riding it as a daily commuter in San Francisco since I bought it last fall, with some weekend trips across the bridge and into Marin. The Beam came set-up with noodle bars, which I really like. For most of my riding, though, which involves tearing around the city and hauling groceries, I found myself wanting to try out a more upright position. Enter the Jitensha bars... I loved the Quickbeam before, yeah, but the new bars have taken it to another level altogether. Upright, but still fast feeling with incredible control, even with a loaded front basket. There far enough out that I can still get decent leverage when climbing out of the saddle. Anyway, if you're considering going a little swept back and upright, but don't want to go as far as the albatross bars, I highly recommend giving the Jitensha's a shot. Here're a couple of shots: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gogglz/4483314830/in/set-72157623750965348/ isaac -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: If Filson and Berthoud had a baby....
I use a Filson small field bag as a handlebar bag: http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092393&cp=2065674.2065687.2065708&parentPage=family I take the shoulder strap off and stash it in the bag and use velcro strips from the hardware store to lash the bag to my noodle bars. I loop the velcro through the brass rings that the shoulder strap usually clips to. It has a nice leather handle on top for carrying into the store, or I can put the shoulder strap back on and use it as a field bag. The only downside is that it's on the smaller side. [RBW] Re: Advice on building up a Quickbeam (+introduction)
Thanks for the warm welcome and great information. I just got back from Rivendell this evening. Here's what I've decided on so far, based on your recommendations and the input of the Rivendell folk. I went with the CR720s for the brakes. I also decided to start off with noodle bars, the mini-front rack, and fenders. I was disappointed to discover that the medium Wald basket is a lot smaller than I had imagined. I'm hoping I can fit a large basket on that mini-rack--has anyone tried this? I also plan to fit a 14 tooth track cog with a bb lock ring on the flip side of the stock hub. So there it is, folks. Thanks for the help. I'll post pictures sometime next week! [RBW] Re: Advice on building up a Quickbeam (+introduction)
Thanks, everyone. I appreciate it. The Paul brakes look great and the bb lockring is a good tip--didn't know there was such a thing. I'm looking forward to riding freewheel again, but must admit that I got hooked on riding fixed while I was living in Japan (a happy accident and a long story). It would be nice to be able to do both on the beam. Thanks again, Isaac -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Advice on building up a Quickbeam (+introduction)
Hello RBW owners, After several years of visits to RBW headquarters, drooling over the Readers, and a couple of Riv-ish bike builds, I'm proud to say that I'll be a Quickbeam owner by the end of the week! I've managed to score an orange QB frameset and I'm having the folks at Rivendell build it up for me. I was planning to go with a stock build (I really like and want to honor the original concept), plus a front rack, basket, and fenders. I do have a couple of questions to put to the group, though, before I go through with my plans: 1) Have any of you ridden with a fixed cog on flip side of the stock hub? Is it safe without a lockring and with the quick release? Have you experienced any slippage? I wouldn't be doing any skid or skip stops with two brakes, but I would probably be doing some back-pedal braking when riding fixed. 2) Seeing as this a build-up project, I have the opportunity to tweak the stock build as much as I like (or can afford). Is there anything you modified later that you wish had come on the stock bike? Any tips appreciated. Thanks in advance for any responses. It's great to be able to join this group! i.e. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group.
