[RBW] Re: The Rivendell Bike Weight Thread

2018-11-04 Thread nick b
My double top tube 58 Appaloosa with with the "big" front and rear racks,
medium saddlesack (which I store the large shopsack in), big basket,
generator hub and lights, a couple tubes, patches, pump, etc weighs
42.4lbs. It's so heavy I have stopped caring. Friday night I carried 2
helinox chairs, a growler of beer, and a sweatshirt up my regular climb in
sandals and a soccer jersey and met my wife to watch the sunset. It took
me 15 minutes longer than it does on my road bike but that's beside the
point. I have several light bikes and I'd rather ride my Rivendell on most
occasions.

[RBW] My back is pretty stoked on my Rivendell...

2018-12-15 Thread nick b
So I'm probably relatively young for this forum. Mid 30s. I have a few
aggressive bikes and my Appaloosa. Anyway, I woke up one morning a couple
weeks ago in a severe pain and could barely walk. After a couple CT scans
we found out it was a bulging disc in my spine. My snowboarding and
cycling injuries seem to be catching up with me. Since then I've gotten
enough strength back to resume a normal routine with cycling but when I go
on my road or cross bikes I get a ton of sciatic pain if I push too hard.
The Appaloosa alleviates all of that. I get that part of these bikes now.
I'm just stoked I liked the form and function of Rivendells to begin with.

I was sitting in the hospital looking at Roadeos. I have a problem. Might
be cheaper to buy a new stem.

[RBW] Re: Anyone in Santa Barbara that can help me assemble my riv?

2018-07-16 Thread nick b
I live in the area and could help you but like another person posted I'd
recommend just going to Bici Centro and you'll get it put together well and
learn a bunch in the process. It's where I put together my first custom
build. Ask for Raph. He'll be fucking stoked to help you put together a
Rivendell, trust me. Good luck. And seriously, let me know if you need
some help. I have an Appaloosa and have a friend who I ride with sometimes
who has an Appaloosa. Let me know if you wanna ride sometime.

[RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2018-07-17 Thread nick b
I ride with a Sackville Shopsack a lot. You can put shitloads in it and it
expands well. I keep double d-rings on it so it stays in well when being
ridden on decent roads and then I use a bungee net when I'm going to be
riding dirt. It's VERY expandable and secure. Maybe worth a look for
you. It meets all of your requirements but the outside compartments.
However, I usually end up strapping things between the net at the bag and
then keep a stem caddy on my bike for the rest. I've used other basket
bags and don't like them as much as that option.

The prices are going up $100 from $1300 to $1400.

[RBW] Re: Homer +1 discussion

2018-02-22 Thread nick b
You could get another wheel and cassette for using on the trainer so you
can just swap wheels and go. It doesn't take much time to swap a wheel,
takes up less space, and would certainly be cheaper than buying another
bicycle.

[RBW] Re: GDMBR with Adventure Cycling

2018-05-18 Thread nick b
Yes! So I actually decided to purchase my Appaloosa while riding from
Banff to Whitefish last summer on a converted rig that blew out 3 spokes on
the rear wheel about 40 miles north of the Canadian border. Long story but
it's incredible an incredible trip. One of the best experiences of my
life. I'll ride the GDMBR one day. I actually had been lusting after an
Atlantis for well over 10 years but the Appaloosa was easier to swallow at
the time so I went for it. Had I known that they would make the chainstays
longer and sell it for damn near half the price of the USA made one I would
have waited for the Atlantis! But oh well, I'm beyond happy with my
build. Enjoy your trip. Make sure you ride Going-to-the-Sun Road both
ways. It's unbelievable.
