[RBW] Re: Anyone else in the Bay Area sign up for 3CR?

2014-01-09 Thread stevew
Looks like a fantastic ride. I'm sort of kind of considering it, but our
brevet series here in New England ends on July 26, and I'd like to have a
little more rest time before tackling the 1200. Plus, I'll be traveling
the week before, so it probably just won't work out. I did the Surf City
600K a few years ago, and it was simply stunning - one of the best rides
I've ever done. You Californians have it made.

I do plan on going back for the 600K again this year at the end of
September, riding my Ram, of course.

[RBW] Re: Frame bags

2012-05-20 Thread stevew
Hi all,

Just a few notes on the Revelate Tangle frame bag. I went ahead and
ordered the medium size to go with my 60cm Ram. (shipped to Boston
from Alaska in 3 days!) I went with the medium because I don't need a
ton of space for this bag, and I wanted to minimize any difficulty
with getting water bottles out of their cages.

I did the Climb to the Clouds ride up to the top of Mt Wachusett here
in MA yesterday, and the bag worked great. It didn't rub my knees at
all, it was easy to get my foodstuffs out of the bag while riding, and
I am able to get at both bottles. Though, the seat tube bottle
doesn't go in and out quite as smoothly. I'm not using the larger
size plastic bottles, but smaller aluminum ones. The strap that
connects the front bottom of the bag to the down tube that is just
long enough to make the connection.

I use the Ram mostly for brevets, and got the frame bag to replace an
Acorn Handlebar Bag. The handlebar bag worked well, but I was never a
huge fan of how it connected the the bars. I think the frame bag is
going to work - we'll see on the Boston 300K in a couple of weeks.

Here's some pix:

[RBW] A Rambouillet, Paul Racer Ms, Longboards, and Grand Bois Cypres

2013-04-08 Thread stevew
I mounted a pair of Grand Bois Cypres - 700x30 (they are supposed to
actually measure 32mm, but I don't have a good way to check) - tires on my
Rambouillet this weekend and went out for a ride.

I had been debating the purchase for a little while because I was concerned
about clearance under my Longboards. For a trip on the C&O Towpath, I
mounted a pair of Schwalbe Marathon 32s, and they just made it, although a
little tight for my taste. However, they were just fine over the rough-ish
surface of the towpath. At this point, I was using Silver sidepulls.

Recently, I switched to Paul Racer Ms, and decided to take the Grand Bois
plunge. Elton@Harris felt that the tires would fit under the fenders, and
he was indeed correct. Either the Cypres are a little smaller than the
Marathons, or the Racer Ms allow the fender to raise a little higher than
the Silvers. Could be both. In any case, the tires fit fine.

I was also wondering if the purchase of the Grand Bois tires would be
"worth it". I had been running Paselas, and they were fine. My Ram with
Dura-Ace 7700 hubs rides like glass. But, add in the Cypres, and it rides
like glass coated in butter. Man, is that one smooth bike now.

One thing that I was not expecting was the improved cornering. Now, I'm
not Jobst Brandt or anything when it comes to turning...

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_urSQl6wUA5g/S53M3cq118I/H48/iMcTHor25qM/s1600/tiretest.jpg

...nor did the Ram corner poorly before, but with the new tires, it was
just so smoth. I could lean the bike over and it never wavered from
what seemed like a perfect arc. I wonder if this has to do with the
"roundness" of the tire? It seems like the wheel is just rolling over a
large glass marble or something. The bike also seemed easier to control
and even more stable at very slow speeds. Once again, these are
improvements over already excellent handling characteristics.

Anyway, I'm just putting this out there as one opinion on the size of a
32mm tire under fenders on a Rambouillet (it fits!), and how Grand Bois
Cypres tires ride (they're awesome!).

[RBW] RB0053 post overhaul

2010-11-24 Thread stevew
With all the talk lately about Rambouillet serial numbers, I thought I
would post pix to RB0053, which I just completely overhauled. This
was my first time taking a bike completely apart, and then putting it
back together.

Here are pix:
http://bit.ly/fjExCY

I believe this frame has been owned by at least two other list
members, and came into my possession in August of last year. I
completed my first brevet series plus another 600K this year, and
really wanted to give my bike a complete overhaul. The Ram deserved
some spa treatment.

Breaking down the bike to the frame was actually quite fun. It was
really neat to see and hold the frame all by itself. It made me
appreciate the bike all the more. I completely washed and waxed the
frame, regreased the headset, repacked the rear hub, cleaned out the
bottom bracket, put on a different stem, and installed new fenders. I
didn't replace the cables and housings since I just did that last
winter. I'm thinking that I probably should have while I had the
opportunity, but I can take care of that when I rewrap the handlebars
in the not too distant future since I kind of botched that job. The
brake levers also ended up a little high, which looks a little weird
to me, but actually may prove to be quite comfortable.

I bought the bike with a Peter White built wheelset with Dura Ace 7700
hubs, and have since replaced the front wheel with a SON. I was a
little nervous about taking apart the rear hub, but everything went
fine. I don't know if it's all about the hubs/wheels, but this bike
rides s smooth. The rear hub is silent while coasting.

The overall build is nothing too special. I actually replaced a Nitto
lugged stem with a regular old Technomic because the lugged stem
seemed a tad too long, and I replaced the Honjo fenders with Planet
Bike Cascadias because the Honjos were a bit rattley and also hard to
remove and reinstall for travel.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, but this bike is amazing. Fast,
comfortable, smooth, basically rides like a dream.

[RBW] Baggins pannier cleaning

2009-08-11 Thread stevew

Hi all,

Just joined the group as I just purchased a Rambouillet off
CraigsList. Sweet.

The bike came with Baggins panniers that are in need of a bit of
cleaning. Anyone have any suggestions on how to best do this? Also,
does the cotton need to be retreated at some point?

Any suggestions on the care and feeding of my Baggins panniers would
be greatly appreciated.

[RBW] Retouching a touch up

2009-08-28 Thread stevew

Hi all,

I have an orange Rambouillet with a few nicks and scrapes. Some have
been touched up with nail polish by the previous owner, and some are
newer, showing the bare steel. I would like to redo the existing
touch up spots, and touch up the new nicks.

My concern is not so much aesthetic, but rust prevention.

I found a good step by step on how to touch up bicycle paint on the
Waterford site:
http://waterfordbikes.com/now/home.php?newstype=touchuppaint

And, some orange bike touch paint at Ben's Cycles:
http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=612_622&products_id=1432&zenid=64e6abcf408f244c9286c03b62a6e04b

Here are my questions:

1. What do people normally use to touch up paint? I have seen many
different examples online, but am curious what this group thinks.

2. If I use nail polish remover to remove the existing nail polish on
my bike, do I need to worry about the nail polish remover coming into
contact with the original finish?

3. A small bottle of Testors paint seems like a decent way to go,
although color match may be a problem. If I use Testor's, I want
enamel paint, right? I would rather not get into spraying, which
eliminates the Competition Orange, I think.

Any other wisdom is certainly welcome.

Thanks,
Steve

[RBW] FS: Brand V Handlebar Bag

2010-09-14 Thread stevew
Hi all,

I am selling my Brand V Handlebar bag - it is the soft one that Riv
sold several months ago, not the new BoxyBar Bag.

It has seen rain on a few long rides, but is in good condition. I
tried to take a picture of some discoloration that is by one of the
brake hood straps, but it didn't quite come out. There is a mark, but
it is not that big of a deal. Some chocolate spilled on the inside of
the bag, and left some stains there. I wiped it out and it is pretty
clean now.

Here are some pix:

http://picasaweb.google.com/swimberg/HBarBag?authkey=Gv1sRgCMar1OLnguv_tgE&feat=directlink

Although it's not in the pictures, the clear map case that goes on top
is included. It is in good condition too.

How does $55 including USPS Priority Mail shipping sound?

[RBW] Re: A mustache moment

2010-04-15 Thread stevew
I have mustache bars on my Surly Cross Check, and love them. I mostly
use this bike for commuting and other shorter rides, and find that the
bars give lots of control in terms of maneuverability and braking.
And Bruce is right, they are great for climbing. I've used this bike
on centuries and thought that the bars worked fine.

My Ram has Nitto Randonneurs, which I probably would have switched to
mustaches a while ago, but I didn't want to swap out the fancy lugged
stem for a Dirt Drop or the like. I prefer the braking feel of the
mustaches, and I seem to get more leverage while climbing with them,
too. However, I'll probably stick with the Randonneurs on the Ram,
especially since I just got a BarBox, which won't fit on the
mustaches.

[RBW] Re: Where are the Brompton Owners or A Case of the Novembers

2016-12-01 Thread stevew
Hi all,

A few thoughts on lights - We bought my wife's Brompton off Craigslist with
the Shimano dyno-hub/light setup. It works great for her and does not
interfere with the fold. I think dyno-hubs are a great way to go, and have
one on my Ram that I use for brevets, so I would recommend it for a
Brompton if you ride at night and are OK with the extra cost.

However, we bought my Brompton new, but I didn't want to pay the additional
cost for the dyno-hub setup. I use the bike for commuting and getting
around town, so battery lights are fine for that. For the front light I
got a Busch and Muller IXON Core IQ2
.

It's a fantastic light that I mount to the handlebars. It doesn't
interfere with the fold and comes off easily if I need to remove it for any
reason. The taillight took a little trail and error, though.

At first, I attached a Planet Bike Superflash

to the rear part of the rail on a Brooks saddle. This worked OK, but due
to the narrow width of the rail I could never get the clamp to be tight
enough so that the light stay upright as I bounced along the road. Next, I
bought a Busch and Muller DTopLight XS

that I mounted to the reflector mount that sits right above the rear
fender. This is pretty much the same light (battery version) that is on my
wife's Brompton, and was mounted in the same place. This was not a great
solution because on this light, the release to open it to replace the
batteries is located on the underside of the light, which is hard to access
due to it practically touching the fender. Trying to open the light, I
ended up breaking the little tabs that hold the whole thing together, so
that it started coming apart as I again bounced along the road.

Finally, I took the Cateye LD610

from my Ram and mounted it to the reflector mount using a CatEye Rear Rack
Bracket
.
This works perfectly.

One pretty big consideration when thinking about attaching a rear light to
the mount that sits above the fender is to make sure that it is not too
tall. This is because when the bike is folded, the fender and light mount
are upside down, and are very close to the ground. If the light is too
tall, the bike will then rest on the light, instead of the little wheel on
the rear fender, and the Eazy Wheels. Does that make sense?

Bromptons are great bikes. Get one. You need it. You know you do.
