[RBW] Albatross Bars and stem size

2022-07-29 Thread Russell Duncan
Greetings all,

I just joined the group, and I'd like to ask the collective about their
experiences converting a a drop bar road bike for use with a Riv Albatross
bar, and specifically the size of stem to use. Its not easy to do a search
on this without weeding through many FS or WTB posts for Albatross bars.

First, the bike that is being retrofitted: it is a 1977 Trek TX500, size 49
and 53 c-to-c seat and top tubes respectively. I believe that it was the
smallest size Trek available in their first(?) year of operation, and It's
a MUSA frame.

Second, the person that I'm building it for and its intended use: my
partner who already has a road bike with drop bars and a mountain bike with
mountain bike style bars. My thought was to build her something different
and more like the ride of my classic 3-spd Raleigh that I like riding about
town on.

I have the handlebars and they're currently set-up with a 1970s TTT road
stem, size 65 mm by my measurement. This seems too short and I was thinking
that a 90 mm maybe a better choice with how far back the handlebars will be
for a comfortable ride.

As to shifters, I'm now settled on Shimano bar end shifters. First, I tried
Paul Thumbies, but I know that she'll complain as even I think that it's
somewhat awkward shifting barcons retrofitted as thumb shifters. I know
some swear by their use but, I also know what she'll come to like in the
end, no muss, no fuss. Hell, I may end up putting shifters on the stem for
her, which will not be a bad thing. As Crumpie says, Just Ride the Bloody
Bike.

So, suggestions please, and feel free to contact me directly.

[RBW] Albatross bars: 25.4mm vs 31.8mm???

2020-09-22 Thread 'John Phillips' via RBW Owners Bunch
Albatross handlebars, has anyone compared the shape of the 25.4mm clamp
version to the shape of the 31.8mm clamp bar?

I have a set of the old 56cm wide 25.4mm clamp version of the Albatross
bars, which I like very much and are significantly wider up to the curves,
and I wondered if the 31.8mm version had a similar curve? Soma Fabrication
website lists the 31.8mm bars as 56cm wide, but I can't find any more info
on the 31.8mm version.

Does anyone know anything about the 31.8mm version of the Albatross bar?

Thanks much,

John

Re: [RBW] Albatross bars for a Moustache antagonist

2019-03-18 Thread Patrick Moore
I've tried the Moustache probably a dozen times over the years (all the
original model) and, while it is not as uncomfortable as some other bars
I've used, it is never good for more than a few miles. But I always found
the curves the most comfortable part, and that is where I positioned the
brake levers.

I recently swapped out the M bar on my Dahon folder for a Surly Open bar,
the model with no rise, and trimmed the ends severely, and installed road
levers, again at the apex of the curves. Still not as comfortable as a road
drop bar, but better than the M bar for sure because it let me set the bar
level with saddle but without extending the reach excessively.

The Open has less reach and more width (66 versus 53 cm), and the sweepback
angle is considerably shallower; it also comes in a model with rise.
Perhaps worth a look. IIRC, though, only steel and black.

[RBW] Albatross bars for a Moustache antagonist

2019-03-18 Thread Joe Bernard
I find the rearward position on Moustache/Albastache to feel completely
different to Albatross with Ergons. In theory they should be similar, but in
practice the Albatross is miles better with those paddles on there.

[RBW] Albatross bars for a Moustache antagonist

2019-03-18 Thread Christopher Cote
I've got a question for the collective. I'm looking to get a little more
upright in life. I am considering Albatross bars. My concern is that I have
tried a few times to get comfortable on Moustache, and later Albastache
bars, and never really gelled with them. I didn't find the forward position
comfortable at all, and my hands would fall into a position on the sweeps
that would just send jolts of pain up my wrists. Is there anyone out there
that had a similar reaction to Moustache bars, but found comfort in
Albatross bars? Or am I wasting time and money trying out the Albatross
bars? Would Ergon "paddle-type" grips help with the wrist pain thing?

As a counterpoint, I find the hoods and ramps of drop bars acceptable, and
on my off-road focused mountain and fat bikes, I like "alt" bars with 25-45
degrees of sweep.

I think I'd be pretty happy with the new Wavie bar, but that is very
similar to the before mentioned bars on my off-road bikes. I want something
different than my existing road (drop) and off-road (mid sweep) bars.

Thanks!

Chris

[RBW] Albatross bars ???

2016-08-02 Thread Joe Bernard
12cm, 13 if you can find one. You'll be a bit shocked at how far back those
bars reach.

[RBW] Albatross bars ???

2016-08-02 Thread Lungimsam
I used mine with my existing drop bar 8cm stem and handling was fantastic in
all circumstances.

Your existing stem may be fine. Why buy before you try?

[RBW] Albatross bars ???

2016-08-02 Thread Alex Zeibot
Hey!
A quick question. I'm switching the drop bars on my Homer Hilsen to
Albatross. Any advice on length adjustment on stem?
Currently I have 90mm stem. My inference based on observations would
dictate to get 110mm, a 20mm longer to retain handling comfort.
Am I right?
A little help here, please.
Thanks!
Alex

[RBW] Albatross bars

2012-04-09 Thread Duplomacette
I'm thinking about switching out my drop bars for albatross on one of
my bikes to mix things up. So I'm also thinking about getting the
aluminum. A bit more in price but I think aluminum is what I want.
Anybody think the steel bars are better? I'd love to hear some
feedback from people who have used albatross bars. Like? Love? Meh?

[RBW] Albatross bars on a Rambouillet?

2011-12-28 Thread Jay LePree
I have been using my Rambouillet mostly as a commuter and for rides
less than 1 to 2 hours long. I have been thinking about trying out
some upright bars on it for better visibility. Anyone try this with
their Rambouillet?

[RBW] Albatross bars and brakes

Wow, I like these bars. I seem to favor the position where the bars
curve from the straight sections. What's the best way to position the
brake levers?

[RBW] Albatross bars

2009-03-07 Thread Angus

This weekend I changed to Albatross handlebars on my All-Rounder. If
anyone has any suggestions/hints/advice I would welcome the input.
Many thanks to Keven Grant at RBW for the quick answers to my e-mail
questions.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/16951...@n08/3336687848/

I made the change to give myself a bike with a much more upright
riding position; I was delt a back that sometimes behaves and feels
great and other times is painful and stiff. These bars sure seem
comfy so far!
