Changed up the bar wrap. Tried something I've been thinking about for
a long time.

Looks nice, Brian - even more decorative than the harlequin wrap. You
should get lots of kudos from the argyle skirt wearing gals in town
(personal experience...) How is the comfort so far in comparison with the
leather wrap you had on it? I just ran bare bars for a few weeks getting my
fit right, and almost convinced myself that I don't need the cork under
cotton that I usually go with.

[RBW] Bar wrap direction

2018-01-01 Thread ted
Back in the nearly forgotten days of my youth I recall wrapping bar tape
from the stem to towards the end, tucking a bit in the end and finishing
with a bar plug. But for years now (since I started using cork) I've been
wrapping the other direction and finishing with tape or twine. I figure the
change is because thick stiff cork won't tuck into the end. But it looks
like folks around here tend to also wrap cloth tape from the end towards
the stem. Is that because bar end shifters favored by many don't play nice
with tucking the tape inside?
I ask because I'm going to give some Rivet leather tape a try and it came
with smallish end plugs and instructions to wrap from the stem to the end
and tuck the tail inside.
I'd appreciate hearing folks views on the finer points of wrapping drop
bars with cloth/cork/leather.

[RBW] Bar wrap direction

2018-01-01 Thread Philip Williamson
I’d follow their directions and see how it goes. I wrap end-to-stem, inward
toward the bike (I think - I did it today, but I always have to look at the
bike to make sure). For a while I did the trick where you wrap ends-to-levers,
and stem-to-levers, but the only advantage was no “finish” tape or twine near
the stem. I wrapped stem-to-ends once, and tucked the tail into the bar once,
and it was fine but not a game-changer.

[RBW] Bar wrap direction

2018-01-02 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Agreed regarding thick cork tape not playing nice with the tuck and plug
method. But sounds like Rivet has sized their plug specifically to allow this
so like Philip suggested I’d give it go with their recommended method first and
see how it works for you.

One thing I found for direction of wrap however is that for the “roof shingle”
effect it could depend on where you spend most of your time on the bars if
running drops. if you spend more time IN the drops then end to stem will have
the shingle facing front going into the hooks but same direction of wrap will
then have the shingle facing rear up on the ramps... so if you are more of a
hoods and ramps rider you may want to wrap stem to end to get that front facing
overlap up top.

I discovered that being an issue only when using some cotton tape for the 2nd
or 3rd time and with the tackiness limited from the loss of glue... after only
a few rides the tape was getting spread apart up on the ramps and it became
less an issue after I redid and reversed the wrap since I knew I’d be on the
ramps more for that particular build.

Both! I wrap from the end to the brake lever and from the stem to the brake
lever. No twine or tucking necessary. Works especially well if doing a weave.

What Olaf said. Wrapping stem-to-ends can help if your hands tend to slip
forward on the bars—your hands catch on the edges of the tape, which
unfortunately get worn and frayed more quickly.

All of my bikes are wrapped end-to-stem.

Just out of curiosity, when wrapping the tape this way, how do you hold
both ends under the brake lever so they don’t unwrap? And how do you ensure
there are no gaps between both tapes on the opposite side of the lever?

Good questions. I should have noted that I’m talking about standard drop bars
and brake levers with hoods. The tape ends at the brake lever and runs up the
side of the body. I orient the wrap direction so that the two halves end on
each side of the lever body. If I want to ensure no gaps, I use a short piece
of tape run at a bit of an angle from one side of the lever body to the other.
The brake hood covers all the ends and holds them in place. I have also removed
the brake lever body, leaving the clamp band in place, taped the bar, then
installed the brake lever on top of the tape. It only works with thin tape, and
some levers make that easier than others. If you don’t have hoods on the brake
levers, you could try that.
