[RBW] Brooks B-17 Special S2-11006

2024-04-11 Thread Lyman Labry
Hello All,
The pin and shackle fell off my Brooks B17 saddle recently. The saddle was
purchased from Rivendell and is less than 3 years old. I asked Riv for
guidance but have not heard back from them.
Has anyone in the group experienced this problem? Any guidance appreciated.
Thank you,
Lyman in ATX

[RBW] Brooks 5J9 Leather Bicycle Saddle

2024-02-04 Thread Kim H.
This Brooks 5J9 Leather Bicycle Saddle is currently on eBay. I personally
have never seen this model of saddle before. The seller has no background
information on it.

Does anyone herein have any information about this saddle ?

I am not interested in purchasing the saddle. I am just curious about it.
It is most definitely for upright riding.

[RBW] Brooks B68 Video

2024-01-19 Thread Corwin Zechar
I no longer ride Brooks saddles, but I am a big fan of this video
.

My new custom is enshrined in it. Apparently Mark had it in the stand when
Brian came around filming. You can tell that it's not a purple Platypus as
it has an RBW custom head badge and is fitted with Tektro red anodized
V-brakes.

Look for it at 0:51 seconds.

Regards,

Corwin

[RBW] Brooks B72 Reissued!

2023-12-06 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
FYI for anyone that hasn't already noticed the resurrection of the B72
model.
https://theradavist.com/brooks-b72-review/

I know the B68 gets a bit more attention as the wide, unsprung, single rail
model that is plug & play with modern seatpost clamps but I thought this
was interesting news to share for anyone that might like to find something
of a middle ground between the unsprung models and the large coil springs
found on the Flyer/Conquest and other sprung, more upright saddles.

Not sure when the new Brooks adapter kit will actually become available as
it's not yet on their site (as of earlier this morning) and Radavist only
mentions 'next week' with their 11/30 article but seems they'll be
obtainable soon.

I have an old B72 with a condition pretty much matching that of the one
installed on the Ritchey in the photos of the Radavist link. My own came
off a mid 70's Raleigh Sports I picked up used. I treated the leather a
handful of times and eventually used it on my Clem with a Breezer double
rail adapter until it sagged enough to hit the top of the seatpost clamp on
even mild bumps. I retired it before it broke rather than keep stretching
the old leather with more and more bolt adjustments as a few spots started
to crack and flake. I also kind of just like the look of the saddle and
unique spring design so wanted to keep an old example intact.

We also have a B18 with the same rail and spring design as the B72 on my
spouse's three speed (I had sadly slept on the limited Raspberry color when
it was available so we only have a brown.) That bike gets much less use
lately but I built it up as a nice resto-mod using the best condition parts
between our two matching Raleigh's, got rebuilt wheels on the original hubs
with new alloy rims, etc. so the new embossed saddle was an additional
splurge. My own Sports turned into more of a franken-build but was a fun
project, albeit too small and short lived.

I had one of the Conquest re-issues but the narrower shape just didn't fit
me even on a more aggressive, bar-below-saddle build so I sold or traded
away the Conquest. I do not necessarily recall a distinct difference in
the suspended feeling between the Conquest and Brooks as much as I did in
the overall fit, shape, and design.

I have no real need for a new B72 at the moment but might go for the new
adapter kit, when available, and play around to see how my old one fits
some spare seatposts with the different sets of bolts and see if I find a
good match that may offer greater under saddle to top of clamp clearance
than I had on the 1-bolt post I used on the Clem with the old B72.

[RBW] Brooks Cambium mod advice

2022-09-01 Thread Brian Turner
Does anyone here have any experience modifying or replacing parts on Brooks
Cambium saddles? I've done it once, when swapping out the stock rivets for
some of the copper ones from Crivets. 3 of the 5 rivets came out without
issue, but for two of them, the rivets just spun around in the square hole
of the saddle rubber that seats the rivets, and I basically had to destroy
the old rivets by cutting a slot into them with a Dremel tool and using a
flat-head screwdriver to unscrew the rivet.

I'm thinking about doing that again to another Cambium, but I'm wondering
if there's a better way to get these rivets to unscrew without destroying
them?

Only complaint I have with my B67 on a very upright Joe App is that is

Re: [RBW] Brooks B67 on a Clem or other upright bike

2022-03-20 Thread Patrick Moore
I've used a couple of B 67s and B 68s and they are very definitely made for
the old-fashioned sit-up-and-beg riding position; bend forward much and
you'll wish for something narrower. But for sitting bolt upright they were
fine, tho' I'm just as happy upright on a b 17-width saddle, which I find
too wide for drop bars 1" lower than saddle (the original Flite is perfect
for that, for me).

But saddles are so personal that others' choices may well be very different
from what is comfortable for you.

[RBW] Brooks B67 on a Clem or other upright bike

2022-03-20 Thread Richard Rose
This may or may not be a question aimed specifically at Clem owners.
Rivendell suggest the B67 for very upright positions. But, most Riv bikes
(Clem or other) I see have either B17, Flyer or other brand leather saddles
(Rivet, RH, SAA...). Even when I take a look at the Riv "staff bikes" I
rarely see a B67, though most of the bikes look pretty upright.
FWIW, I tried a secondhand B67 on my Jones bike when I was struggling to
get comfortable on it after converting it from my mountain bike to my
everything else bike. In that effort I swapped the Jones loop bar for a
more swept back bar (Soma Oxford) and jacked the bars up using a VO Cigne
stem. I was pretty comfortable but just could not get the B67 in a place
where I was not sliding forward so I (foolishly?) sold it. But the
experiment led me to my interest in and eventual purchase of my Clem (Lucky
day!). To date I have only ridden the Clem with my trusty SQ Labs saddle
and it has been great for most of the nearly 600 miles I have put on the
bike. Most of those rides have been between 1 - 2.5 hours in length. The
other day I went almost three hours and my sit bones were getting
uncomfortable. My thinking is that the SQ is just too narrow for the very
upright position. The B67 seems the natural choice. Thus my question - why
do I not see more B67's on Riv bikes and on Clem's in particular?

Re: [RBW] Brooks saddle repairs

2022-02-08 Thread Joe Mullins
Has anyone ever repaired an old old B-17 with a tear in the leather? After
sitting for nearly 20 years, I took my fathers old Brooks from 1975, threw some
Proofide on it and began using it. Unfortunately it was still totally dried out
deep within and it tore slightly right where the sit bone lands. I’d love to be
able to keep using it if it can be repaired! Thanks!

[RBW] Brooks Saddle on a Clem

2022-01-09 Thread Richard Rose
Good Morning folks. So, I need a saddle for my new Clem. FYI, I have a SQ
Lab saddle on my Jones 29 and am very comfortable. But it is kind of ugly.
So, thinking of Giving a Brooks a try. B67 or B17? Pretty upright position
for this old man, Bosco bar with 85mm stem. Only move hands forward for a
short break or reprieve from a headwind. Suggestions welcome.

AKA hack in the US. If you've ever broken the tension bolt on a Brooks

I've used Brooks B-17 for decades & this was a first for me. Loads of fun

[RBW] Brooks vs Berthoud Saddle Setback

2020-06-09 Thread Nate in Oakland
Hey all! I just converted my Atlantis to drops and now I’m finding that I
can’t get my trusty B17 far enough back for comfort. I’ve been lusting
after/looking for an excuse to buy a Berthoud saddle for a while, and now I’m
wondering if one would fix my setback issue. Someone out there must have
experience with both!

Btw, I know I could get a whacky looking seat post like the one in the Blahg,
but would rather not!

Thanks,

[RBW] Brooks saddle turning into a banana

2018-07-23 Thread Ian A
I have noticed my most well used B17 has variously needed tensioning after a
good soaking. The saddle now has somewhere between 40,000km and 50,000km and I
recently actually changed the tension bolt for a homemade longer one, I have
also finally drilled and laced the saddle. It is still wonderfully comfortable
and I hope to get a lot more miles from it.

I would think you'll need to tension and wax/condition the saddle and after
that it should be fine and not banana shaped. Some sort of saddle cover during
rainy season could be a good investment.

I’ve always loved the regular b17 on my Sam (3-4 years). When I moved it to my

loved the shape of the regular. I now love having the same seat sprung. It
does smooth some bumps. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it creaks
a little. Worth it for the ride quality.

I've found it's a mix between anatomy and bike posture. If you have
narrower sit bones (ischial tuberosities) and/or have a more forward
leaning bike posture, then you may be better off with a narrower saddle. If
you have wider sit bones and/or have a more upright bike posture then you
may be better off with a wider saddle. I started with a b17 and found it
didn't work for me for longer days on my drop-bar bikes, and I moved to a
b17n. I then found the b17 worked fine for me on my upright bar bikes. At
some point I moved on to the Brooks Cambium c17 saddle, which I believe is
in between the b17 and b17n in width, and it works great for me for upright
and forward-leaning bike posture.

[RBW] Brooks B68 for sale

2017-10-22 Thread Steve Butcher

Having switched saddles on my Rosco Bubbe mixte, I am offering for sale
this brown B68 originally purchased from another list member. I'd like to
get $90.00 for the saddle shipped in the CONUS with payment via PayPal
Family and Friends. I apologize for the somewhat out of focus photos; but
they basically show the saddle is in very good condition. I have treated
it once with saddle ointment. I have never gotten the saddle wet. There
are a few tiny scratches by the rivets presumably from the edge of my rear
pants pockets. The black powder coated rail has some scuffs from the seat
post. Please PM me if any questions. Thanks, Steve.

The warranty on our saddles only extends to ten year if you registered it

isn't the case, I am afraid that you will have to pay for any repairs after
the standard two years warranty.

Re: [RBW] Brooks b17 select - opinions?

2016-09-15 Thread Caroline Golum
FWIW I've had a few different iterations of the B17 over the last eight
years. Personally, I'm partial to the B17 champion - I've used both the
mens' and the womens' s-model - and for my money the cut-out and lacing are
fabulous features. The cut-out is pretty self-explanatory, relieves
pressure in the "soft tissue areas," and I use the lacing underneath to
re-tighten the saddle when it starts to sag.

This is my impression too. I have two older B17's that are much more
stout than the current normal ones. Anyway I hope Brooks doesn't
discontinue the Select models, or I wish they would make their normal
models just as good because the B17 shape is nearly perfect for my

2016-09-09 Thread Ron Mc
Late to the party, but you made the right choice. I have a Select and a
Special with about equal miles. This summer, I'm having to wrap a toe
strap around the Special after each ride to keep it from ridging, and it's
stretching enough to see the frame beneath. The next step will be lacing.
The Select took a little bit of stretch bolt this summer, but it's flat, no
ridge, and no impression of the underlying frame in the leather. .

Re: [RBW] Brooks b17 select - opinions?

2016-09-09 Thread René Sterental
If you browse online, you can still find the B17 Select in some sites, but
in others it already shows OOS and a similar message to the RBW site.

I was looking for a B17 Flyer Select and only found it on a site in
Germany. Everywhere else it isn't available anymore, even in the UK.

So if you want one, get it now.

Re: [RBW] Brooks b17 select - opinions?

2016-09-08 Thread René Sterental
I read the Select series has been discontinued by Brooks, so grab them
while you can. I just started using a B17 Select on my custom, and so far,
it's been very nice. I ride padded underwear now. You can still find them
around, but don't wait too long.

Applying Proofide makes it look a rich honey, and will progressively
darken. I'm following Brooks instructions to apply Proofide several times
while breaking it in, so I'm on my second coat now and it looks gorgeous.

Can't tell about long term usage, but I went for it based on feedback from
people in this forum.

[RBW] Brooks saddle repair?

2016-05-16 Thread Tim Gavin
I bent the rails on one of my Brooks B17 saddles. I was fooling around,
hopping stuff, and my foot slipped off the pedal so I came down hard on one
side of the saddle.
My tookus is fine, but the saddle had a 10 to 20 degree slump to the right,
as seen from behind.

I bent the saddle back into alignment by hand, but now it has an annoying
"creak" from that side (when I pedal with my right leg). I haven't closely
inspected it, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's the beginnings of a
stress crack in the rail where it was bent and then bent back.

Do any list members do saddle repair? Or know of a shop that does? It
looks like I can order a new rail assembly

for about a quarter of the cost of a new B17, but the repair would require
someone to drill out the rivets and replace them.

This is a relatively-new B17 (~2000 miles on it) so I'd prefer to keep it
going than to pitch it and start fresh.

Thanks for your advice,

Tim Gavin

[RBW] Brooks Saddle Repair - Broken Tension Shackle

2015-04-29 Thread SeanMac
As I was heading out the door for my bike ride yesterday afternoon I
realized that there was a problem with my much loved Brooks Swift
(titanium) saddle. I put my hand on the top of the saddle and noticed an
unusual amount of flex. Upon closer inspection, it was obvious that
something was wrong. It turns out that part of the tension shackle, the
part that connects the nose of the saddle to the saddle frame, had broken.
Bummer.

The saddle has at least 12,000 miles, and the leather is in great shape, so
I want to have this problem fixed. A new tension shackle can be obtained
very inexpensively (only $3.50 for the chromed steel version). However, as
I have never carried out this repair, I am looking for some guidance /
encouragement / advice. A quick internet search turned up a few good
tidbits, but I'm hoping for some help here from the experts. Is this a
relatively easy repair that a mechanic with limited skills can complete or
would I be much better off shipping the saddle to a qualified repair expert?

If this is not a home mechanic job, I would appreciate advice on where to
have it fixed - ideally in the USA.

Thanks,
Sean

[RBW] Brooks Saddle Leather replacement

2015-03-01 Thread 'john elliott' via RBW Owners Bunch
Has anyone on this list ever replaced the leather on a brooks saddle. I'm
riding on a 90 percent finished recovered saddle. I haven't finished the
final trim and it's installed with brass bolts and nuts instead of rivets.
It turned out better than expected in terms of comfort. I haven't finished
it because I cannot live with my other seat for even a few days.

I'm about to put in the rivets, but I'm not sure what to use for the back
of the rivets to give them the right shape. Maybe another hammer...

any thoughts would be appreciated.

PS: Anyone have a brooks with trashed leather they want to donate?

[RBW] Brooks saddle covers - what all works for you

2014-05-28 Thread Jeff Ong
I use the Aardvark ones, but after losing a couple, I thread a couple
twist-ties through the fabric and around the saddle rails. When I want to take
it off I can just pull it off and push it under the rails, leaving it attached
with the ties.

[RBW] Brooks Challenge Seat Bag FS

2014-05-27 Thread Eric Norris
Going through the closets in preparation for an upcoming move, and came across
a Brooks Challenge seat bag that I'd rather sell than pack.

These sell for $92 new. This one is used, and the buckle on one of the straps
that goes through the saddle loops is missing, so it will take a little fixing
to mount to your bike. Given those shortcomings, how about $35 including
shipping?

[RBW] Brooks saddle covers - what all works for you

2014-05-27 Thread Ryan
I've used the black Carradice cover Riv used to sell and more recently in
the last couple of years, a grey one with 2 little loops ( I guess to add
security). The grey one actually went MIA on a ride last week...which
sort of brings me to my next point. What works for you and stays put?

Riv sells the Aardvark and the Randy-Jo one. My Carradice is still sort of
hanging in there...I remember doing something really stupid a few years
ago and washing it and putting it in the dryer (yeah...I know...dumb,dumb)
...so it's not really that waterproof and the elastic is kind of worn out.
The Randy Jo almost seems like overkill...but suggestions welcome. Saddles
are Brooks B-17 (3) and 1 Ideale 90.

What do the elves recommend?

[RBW] Brooks Team Pro saddle

2014-04-12 Thread Bruce Herbitter
Older saddle, never actually broken in. Adjusting bolt still in original
factory position. Leather in great shape, treated with Obenauf's. Brooks
name badge is darkened.

This saddle does not suit my riding position or general riding style.
Before it goes on eBay, is anyone interested at $50, plus shipping by your
favorite method? Current new list for the chrome rail variety is about
$195.00 US.(Brooks web site) + shipping

[RBW] Brooks leather bar tape - care feeding tips?

2013-12-17 Thread Tim Gavin
Hello again, Rivsters.

I picked up some Brooks leather bar tape for my girlfriend's xmas gift, a
Soma San Marcos. It will match the honey B17S and look beautiful with the
pearly blue paint. (She knows she's getting the San Marcos; it's in her
living room as we finish building it. But she has no clue about the saddle
and tape.)

I've never used leather tape, but I'm comfortable with taking care of my
Brooks saddles.

What are your tips for keeping the leather bar wrap in good condition?

I plan on rubbing some Obenauf's into the tape before I wrap it, to ensure
complete coverage. Is this a good idea?

Then I plan on rubbing in more Obenauf's periodically as the leather dries
out.

Thanks for your advice.
